Jake picks a film favourite and a 'new' Cannes video interview

We all know what our favourite films of 2007 were (one may begin with Z and the other could begin with R), but now we know Jake Gyllenhaals' choice of best film for the year. The UK's Film 2007 review of the year repeated today and, thanks to Winterbird, we can still watch it. It featured soundbites from Jake's London visit back in October when Rendition featured on the programme. It also features Heath in rather more scenic surroundings. Whether through careful editing or cheerful coincidence, both Jake and Heath selected the same film: Once.

This Irish film, which is released on DVD in the UK on 25 February, is an unconventional musical. Amazon tells us 'Glen Hansard (frontman for indie rock band the Frames) plays the guy, a street musician who is playing for change when he meets the girl (Marketa Irglova), an immigrant from the Czech Republic. The pair immediately bond over their shared love of music (he is a guitarist, and she plays the piano), and the film chronicles their tentative relationship... video and handheld cameras, ONCE matches its spare visual style to its intimate mood. Each moment feels stolen from real life, and the story is at once familiar and fresh. Driven more by music than by dialogue, ONCE features a stirring soundtrack of heartfelt indie rock sung by Hansard and Irglova.'

Jake tells us: 'I saw that movie Once. I loved that movie... I just thought it was a brilliant piece of moviemaking'. He did first tell us all, mind you, that 'You should see this one!' meaning Rendition, of course. Heath also recommends Once: 'It was really sweet.' Here is the link to the programme, which I hope works for all, but, knowing the BBC... It will work for the next six days. Daniel Radcliffe - aka Harry Potter - had even better taste: he voted for Zodiac 'Because it's a thriller with absolutely no conclusion at all.'

Zodiac makes a last-minute run for it

BAFTA let us all down - the Academy has left off Zodiac and Rendition from its list of contenders for 2008. Needlesstosay, I'm... peeved and can say no more about it for the time being because I don't want to burst any blood vessels. However, there is a slither of hope from across the pond, as Paramount realises - almost certainly too late - that Zodiac was a good film after all and maybe it should have given it the backing it deserved.

According to the LA Times: 'Paramount's new "Zodiac" for-your-consideration advertisements in Friday's Variety and next Monday's Los Angeles Times arrive as David Fincher's movie keeps appearing on film critics' Top 10 lists. According to one online survey of more than 400 reviewers' favorite films (criticstop10.com), only two other 2007 movies -- "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will be Blood" -- have turned up more frequently than "Zodiac." Showing up on 143 best-of-the-year lists, "Zodiac" has claimed 19 No. 1 spots.'

'"Suddenly, everybody is waking up to the fact that this is a good movie," said Mike Medavoy, one of the film's producers. Fellow producer Brad Fischer said Paramount may have underestimated the film's critical support. "I don't think they expected 143 critics to put it on their Top 10 lists." Paramount is hoping that with no clear best picture favorite, "Zodiac," which grossed a modest $33.1 million in domestic release, might draw sufficient attention for best picture, director, cinematography and screenplay.' However... 'Paramount's biggest problem is time: Ballots for the 80th Academy Awards are due at 5 p.m. on Jan. 12. And since "Zodiac" opened in early March, the film may not be prominent in many Oscar voters' minds. (Fincher's director's cut "Zodiac" DVD arrives Tuesday, however.)'

But it's good to dream.

While I'm thinking about Zodiac, and feeling the effects of a cold and wishing I could see that Cannes sunshine and sea all over again, here is a video interview with Jake (and Mark Ruffalo) from the Dutch site Cinema.nl. Once again, I hope it will work for everyone. Jake is sitting in the same spot that he sat in for the Happy Birthday Cannes series of interviews, but with a different shirt on. I know there's no reason to notice that kind of thing, but I do.

'I think it's a human instinct to want to go into the unknown and know it. Everybody needs to know - that's a kind of human desperation, it always has been. There are people who can accept the unknown and who can live in questions and I think that there are people who desperately need to know. And I think that the unfortunate thing about that is, if taken far enough, it can be very destructive.'

  1. jake, what are you thinking? The best film of 2007 is Zodiac! The one you starred in!

Well, I can't wait, I just ordered Once from playusa!

  2. Hey Winterbird - Jake was just being modest ;) Everybody knows the best movie of 2007 was Zodiac. So Once is already available! I've just opened up Playusa and I'm going to order it too :D Thanks so much for alerting us to this show today. Film 2007 is on too late for me normally so I almost always miss it.

  3. Is it just me or is it a really weird evening? Is it this cold?

Enuf rhetoric. Sorry WDW, my favourite film of 2007 was La Mome (the film about Piaf) but I liked Zodiac too and will be buying my copy tomorrow for a shockingly cheap £7.

Couldn't open the interview despite pressing all the Dutch buttons! :(

  4. Hi Anouska - I reckon it's the cold - I feel strangely detached from my head, which is not a pleasant feeling.

I'm sorry to hear you can't play the video - I didn't have any problem - are you having Flash issues?

The Edith Piaf film you mention is a favourite on Film 2007. As an ignoramus who has little time to go to the cinema (due to a certain JG taking up inordinate amounts of my time), I had only heard of this film. It looks wonderful and I'll hav to see a DVD. Incidentally, I used to be very well known for my Edith Piaf impression...

But what am I saying? Shame on you! How can you put any film above Zodiac (except perhaps Rendition). I was horrified to see HMV selling off Zodiac in the sale. I wanted to tell them to put the price up. Also they're selling Jarhead for only £3 - isn't that appalling?! As I think I told you on the phone, I saw piles of Zodiac on the floor in HMV with a whole load of World Trade Centers lying on top of them - it was like a Gyllenhaal explosion.

  5. I saw Jarhead for £3 in HMV too - felt like pimping it to everyone around me :) I have a slightly embarrassing habit of stroking Jake's face on dvd covers in shops.

Piaf impression :):D Oh dear, you're so going to regret revealing that :)

Once looks really good but I'm a little bit more patient than Winterbird* so I'll get it on dvd.

I saw Lust, Caution and it's a beautiful and complex thing. It isn't BBM. The lead actress was photographed in a very Jack Twist way (unsurprisingly as it's Rodrigo doing the work) - she's kind of an icon of beauty.

  6. PS No Flash issues; I've got that working now - I wasn't asked to download anything on the Dutch vid.

  7. So I'm not the only one to caress Jake DVDs in shops then... I'll tell Mr WDW that. I am so not going to show you my Edith Piaf impression ;)

That's interesting abot the photography of Lust, Caution and that similarity to that other icon of beauty in Ang's films, Jack. Puzzled about your Dutch video issues...

  8. No worries, I was just being techno-klutz as usual, got it to work now :)

  9. Note to self - don't go DVD shopping with WDW and Anouska.

    ReplyDelete
  10. What are you saying Ruby? Are you above stroking JG DVDs in shops? When I saw Zodiacs on the floor the other day in a store, Anouska told me to pick them up and stack them neatly.

  11. Because I am secretly "Monk". :)

  12. I had high hopes that the BAFTA voters would not forget about Zodiac. :( But by now everyone should know that movies released early on in the year are mostly forgotten about come awards time.

What a coincidence that Jake's and Heath's favourite 2007 film is Once. Hey, maybe they watched the movie together or one recommended it to the other?
    Unfortunately i couldn't watch the vid. :(

  13. Hiya chaps! Funny,I feel strangely detached from my head tonight too,WDW,and I haven't got a cold and have drunk no whisky. I think knackered and menopausal about sums it up.

Felt a little light-headed watching that great Dutch Cannes video too - can't think why, except that Jake can rarely have looked more gorgeous than he did during that trip to Cannes. When he was talking about the destructive power of obsession,do you think he meant us? ;-)

Yes,I'm afraid I saw "Jarhead" on sale for £2.99 in the supermarket and felt strangely compelled to stage a one-woman protest, haranguing the management for under-valuing a masterpiece while rabidly peeling off all the price stickers and eating them! I just about refrained. Do you realise how hard it is to type while wearing a strait-jacket??!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Can I also briefly hijack the blog to apologise to anyone who is overdue an e-mail from me,I'll write when my head's less full of fog....plys I wish to advocate that WDW should post her Piaf impression on Youtube! The world is waiting....

  15. Hi Anon - I am sorry you can't see the video - some of these videos are very hit and miss, therefore I tend to also quote what Jake says. It is a pain :(

I do take some satisfaction from Paramount now realising what a mistake it was to release Zodiac at that time.

Hey Nadine - sorry you're not feeling so good, I'm feeling lousy :( But Cannes Jake is such an incredible tonic, isn't he? Just so beautiful and glowing in that sunshine. Makes me feel so good when feeling so bad.

Couldn't you have taken a pen to those Jarhead price stickers and made them £12.99 or £22.99? I collect stuffed dragons of a certain type (don't ask) but only from carboot sales. I saw one recently and they offered it to me for 50p. I refused and paid them double. It seemed like the right thing to do...

As for the emails... I sympathise - I owe so many emails and I'm sorry too. I hope I'll feel up to it tomorrow. I'm sending you an email now Naine so please read that one!

  16. ^^^PS, sorry for spelling your name wrong ;)

    ReplyDelete
  17. No prob. wdw, it's great that you always quote what Jake says. :)

Paramount realized it too late, i'm still pissed off.

Oh and thanks for the updates! :)

  18. No worries Anon, I'm annoyed too, thank you for reading :D

  19. I can't watch the dutch interview either... but it's probably because of my Mac.

i do wonder if it's too late for Zodiac to try to get the Oscar voters' attention.

Today i am thinking... 2008 will be a quiet year for Jake, in terms of films Brothers is set for 2009 (in fact, i am horrified to notice that the release date is Dec 2009!)... and the Moon Project is also set for 2009...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hi Winterbird - that's a shame about the Dutch interview but it's brief.. :( I'm still holding out that the Brothers date is an error - unless the film has more special effects than The Dark Knight.

    ReplyDelete
  21. i am hoping that it is actually Dec 2008 :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I can't get the video to play either, but I kind of expect that these days:( Btw WDW, there is EVERY reason to notice Jake's changes of clothes;) Or maybe it's just me...

Hope all those detatched heads feel better soon:) Mine's ok for now (well, as much as it's ever been!) but I'm trying to pluck up the courage to watch BBM all the way through, so that may soon change. It's either that or finish reading The Kite Runner (which is brilliant btw, but I've heard the ending of that is a tear jerker too - so either way it's plenty of tissues and no mascara at TL Towers tonight. Or i could just watch SNIT a few times;)

Thanks again Winterbird for that Film2007 video:) That screencap is priceless - another one for the Jake's Funny Faces On UK TV folder:D

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey TL - Maybe I'm the only person outside Holland who can play the video... Glad you agree about noting Jake's change of shirt :D

I'm about to settle down with some Jake myself - not sure which variety - as I need to soothe my head.

Glad you like the screencap - Jake on UK TV is priceless!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I jump started the Dutch video when I clicked on "help" = not too crazy about the dark shirt.

nice to be getting revved up for the Zodiac DVD!

Re: "Once" I bet both Jake and Heath will be doing their own projects one day soon.

LOVE Edith Piaf - WDW! ! ! ! O gosh we really need internet cafe! (I do Marelene D singing "can't help it" also my own version of St. Louis Woman.)

    All these floating heads: - ! ? !
& folks having flash issues. TBTG Jonathan showed up with scotch and goat cheese and chocolate. Im watching Robt Altman films tonight. Thieves Like Us - brilliant - and the young Keith Carradine - nice bod.

I kiss pix of Jake whenever and wherever I see them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hey Pia I pressed the 'help' thing too and that worked! So everyone who can't get it working try that :D

It really took me back, the memories of singing along with my parent's old Edith Piaf records when I was a showoff youngster! I like to kiss pics of Jake too - it seems like the right thing to do :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. The help thing's not working for me:( I clicked it, but just got some er, help tips, which weren't much help to me at all, as the only Dutch words I know are "Dennis Bergkamp". I'll keep trying for a bit, then file it away with all those other Jake clips that mysteriously refuse to work for me;(

    ReplyDelete
  27. LOL, TL :D

I just pressed every button I could until it worked.

WDW, being unfaithful - Matt Damon's on telly in a cowboy hat with a lovely Texan accent. He looks really cute and I have to watch, sorry. :D *

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh no TL - you have to de-Jake-proof your PC!

Hey Anouska - that sounds like a good tactic and one that usually works for me (I think that's why it took me so ong to learn to drive ;) ) I'll let you off about Matt, considering that Jake's such a big fan :D

    ReplyDelete
  29. Press every button, search high and low
Follow every by way, every path you know
Press every button, ford every stream
    etcetcetc

    works for me, too.

back to Robert Altman. On his commentaries he often gets bored, decides the film is no good. . .
    g'nite (i think)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hey Anouska - where can I find Matt in a cowboy hat? If you don't mind sharing, that is;)

Hey Wdw! I wonder if they've heard of this anti-Jake virus down at PC World? TL Jr is on a mission to convince me to buy a new computer which is why I reckon Zac Efron is behind this;)

But I'll follow Pia's advice and keep pressing all those buttons...Hmm...pressing buttons...Jake...do your own punchline, I can't think of one right now!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Altman was great ...

TL, it's All The Pretty Horses, but it's finished now. As am I. Nite folks *

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well g'night everyone - I'm taking me and my runny nose off :D Just have to say that there's not much better to look at when you're about to turn in than Cannes Jake, simply gorgeous.

    G'night *)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I missed Matt:( Thanks anyway, Anouska:) I should get back to Brokeback, anyway.
    Goodnight everyonexx

  34. Hey all,

All the Brits have probably gone to bed. Sweet Jake dreams!

As for the first video, it says I can't watch it because I am outside the UK. :( :( Waahhhh...noo! Can anyone in the UK put that on YouTube. Please, with sugar on top. :p

Once is such a lovely movie. Gorgeous music and wonderful performances. Just a simple, sweet love story set to amazing music. Rent it! Btw, the lead actors fell in love onset. :)

The Edith Piaf movie, La Vie En Rose in the States, is stunning. What a performance, she really becomes Piaf.

But of course Zodiac and Rendition are at the top! Grrr to Paramount for messing things up. It is a masterpiece and deserves to be promoted as such!

Watched the second video. For the Mac users just click on the Quicktime/Real player option and then press the big button I think it says Opsollen or something with an "O" looks like a start button.

  36. Thanks Sass for that clip. It was great to see JR give Rendition the praise it deserves, although it wasn't the same one as the Once clip with Jake and Heath. I love that they both chose the same movie as a fave. Jake did look stunning in in the Film 2007 and Cannes clips...sigh.

  37. Hi everyone :D Don't get too close, I'm very germy....

Hi Get Real - I'm sorry this doesn't play outside the UK - I had a suspicion that would be the case, the BBC are like that. I have reverse trouble with some US net sites. It's bad.

Thanks for the link Sass - That's from Jake being on Film 2007 before. This new bit was just a few seconds (that's all) recorded at the same time of Jake saying a sentence about Once.

Jake looks so stunning there Get Real!

Have a good Sunday everyone :D

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey Sass! That Film 2007 clip was a WDWTL exclusive from October;) Unfortunately the "new" bit slipped through the net or I would've tried to upload it too.Sorry:(

Btw, I got the Dutch clip from last night to work now - with sound and everything!Yay!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey TL - that's good news about the Dutch video :D Your avatar is teasing me.... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  40. WDW, sorry you are germy. :( Hope you can just relax and Jake on this fine Sunday. :)

Is there any way a UKer could put the BBC Jake/Heath Once thing on YouTube? Would be eternally grateful!

    Have a good day everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hey WDW! Sorry about my teasing avatar! If it makes you feel better,it's teasing me too! I would change it, but last time I tried that every pic I choose turned out to be a teasing or distracting one, so you're stuck with this one for a while at least;)

Get Real, if I knew how to upload the Film2007 thing I would, but I only know how to do it from a disc, not from a...whatever the BBC thing is called:( But if I do find out, I'll let you know:)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks TL, I understand that it may not be possible to get the video on YouTube. :( But I appreciate you trying. :) And your avi is so yummy and he really is a tease...which I like. ;p

    ReplyDelete
  43. Removed and reposted 0336 post because of errors.

    Hi WDW and everyone,
I think you're right get real. All our British mates are in Jake dreamland:)
I did go looking on Youtube for the BBC clip I couldn't see with the bbc player. arrgh. I did find an October clip from Film review 2007 with Jonathan Ross.

    Jonathan Ross Film 2007, Rendition???

I'm not sure it's the clip you described, but parts of Jake's deliciously fit frame are covered with the words "Film 2007.:) I've never seen it and enjoyed it immensely.

And Jake looks oh so delicious in
the Danish clip wearing his dark shirt. *thud*
Let me chime in on the Piaf movie. I was fortunate enough to see it on the big screen in Chelsea late last year. Her magnificent performance took my breath away. She deserves a nomination from all the awards people this year but we'll have to wait and see with fingers xxed.

I went right over to Amazon and loaded Once on my list of movies to buy, checkout from the library or rent. TY Kate. How romantic that the leads fell in love making the film. *sigh*:)

What's wrong with Paramount and Mr. Redstone short changing Zodiac? It's about time the suits gave this film the Oscar push it deserves.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi all :D A sleepy sickie kind of day today, quietly Jaking.

TL - I hope you don't change that avatar - it's... sigh... tantalising.

Get Real - I wish I had techno wizardry too but unfortunately I don't... Maybe someone will take pity on us :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Kate I am not surprised that Paramount didn't promote Zodiac more. And them being surprised at the critics putting this on their top 10. This is the same studio that cancelled Star Trek and then was shocked at the success the show had when it went into syndication.

I am hopeful that perhaps it is going to be mentioned in the People's choice awards?

    Trekfan

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi Trekfan1 When I think about Paramount I only have to think back to the so-called LA premiere of Zodiac which was a farce - and no bigger contrast to the European premiere in Cannes. Behind locked gates with no crowd at all, just a few photographers. What a way to launch your film. And yet, despite all that, it is a fantastic film and is now being seen as such by more and more people.
