Last night, the Sony Ericsson Empire Awards took place in London, and while James McAvoy, Keira Knightly and the lovely Ewan MacGregor will be celebrating, unfortunately Zodiac and David Fincher were not among the winners - but at least both got nods. If you're in the UK and feel like it, you can watch the ceremonies on ITV2 tonight.
But on the brighter side, remember the Entertainment Weekly list of the top 30 stars under 30? IMDb ran a poll and have today revealed the results - the out and out winner by a long chalk is none other than Jake Gyllenhaal. 22667 votes were cast and Jake got a massive 24% of those. So while the lights flicker here as the storm passes over Britain, that's put a smile on my face.
Food for thought
Tonight, after all this talk of Jake in restaurants and cooking, I thought I'd have some fun and focus on one of Jake's many winning personality traits - his skills in the kitchen!
Jake's never made a secret of the fact that if he weren't an actor, he would have loved to be a chef, and his pride in his best friend's professions as a cook is evident. We've heard him say that cookery books are his porn and we regularly see him in some of the fine supermarkets of Beverly Hills (not to mention Sprinkles cupcakes store) and yet, for a man who clearly loves to cook, Jake's appreciation of good food has led him to be a regular frequentor of restauraunts - sometimes twice on the same day. From the blood sausages of Provence to the oysters of Santa Monica, Jake loves his food, athough he has decreed on more than one occasion that Italian is his favourite, making it the official cuisine of the fandom.
The Daily Mail asked Jake what his idea of heaven was: 'I have such a great family and I really love to cook for them. I've cooked since I was little. I feel most relaxed in the kitchen. If you can cook with any ingredients you have in your cupboards, then that's a sign of a true chef. I like to cook with any leftovers in the fridge.'
Jake told London's Metro: 'Cooking is just as much of a passion [as acting]. My best friend is a chef and all my closest friends are chefs. I think performing has always been a big thing for me and I think cooking is another type of performance.'
So what does Jake like to cook himself: 'I think if I were to tell you my best dish it would prove I was a real amateur. There’s people who are not really good cooks but I’m going to be really confident when I say, “Oh, my Milanese is amazing.”' Earlier in the same interview, Jake is asked if he would liked to have been a chef: 'That’s a temptation and has always been but I started so young that I didn’t realize I was just as passionate about that.'
And when Jake was featured in People (see and click on picture below) as one the world's sexiest men, Jake owned up to liking cooking breakfast (a big English fry-up maybe?) and being a dab hand at steak.
It looks like Jake had some fun experimenting with food, ingredients and cooking during those long summers on Martha's Vineyard where Jake remembered his mother cooking elaborate meals for them (click on picture below). 'Well, my parents have a garden in their house on Martha's Vineyard. I like to go to the fish market and buy fresh fish caught that day and take some vegetables from the garden and just make something fresh with it. I consider myself sort of the American equivalent of "The Naked Chef."'
As an aside it's rather interesting, in the light of recent comments here about Jake's experience with Dustin Hoffman on the set of Moonlight Mile, that Jake says here that Dustin would take some pleasure from ripping his feathers out.
As a teenager, when he wasn't peeing on jellyfish victims' legs, Jake was also earning pennies washing dishes: 'Jake Gyllenhaal, as a teen-ager, washed dishes for the chef Marco Canora, who was in the midst of his first big-time gig, at Tom Colicchio’s Craft.' I did that, myself as a teenager, and lasted the grand total of two days. In January 2006, it was reported that Jake had filmed a 'secret segment' as a busboy for Mario Batali's show: 'The actor was persuaded to take part on the Food Network show by Batali, who told him he'd make the perfect busboy (someone who clears tables in restaurants) and became part of the chef's staff at New York's Babbo. Gyllenhaal says, "There's an art to busboying. You have to be able to stay away from the table, really. You have to be invisible, you have to be a ghost."'
Talking of Mario Batali, not only are Jake and other members of the Gyllenhaal family regular visitors to Batali's restaurants, various combinations of the family have also appeared on his show to taste the food he cooks. One episode featured pasta and the other featured that old favourite - Italian desserts.
In February 2006, Maggie was asked about her brother's cooking: 'As the Oscar race heats up, Brokeback Mountain nominee Jake Gyllenhaal has it all under control – in the kitchen. "My brother is actually an astonishing cook," sister Maggie Gyllenhaal says. "I'm a pretty good cook – I'm like the lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper kind of cook. He took it to the next level. My brother makes roast beef in a béchamel sauce. When I'm in L.A. I stay with him and he cooks major meals."'
As another aside, it's moving here to listen to Maggie describe what it was like to see Jack Twist the victim of an attack in Brokeback Mountain: '"I really lost it when they show him getting beaten up (in Brokeback Mountain)," she told us at New York City's Spotted Pig restaurant, where she was celebrating Reebok's "I Am What I Am" campaign (she's a spokesperson). "He's my brother so maybe I felt it even more acutely. I thought, 'Why hurt him? What has he done?'"'
The power of a name such as Jake's to draw people into a restaurant shouldn't be underestimated, as this article on the role of Hollywood and the paparazzi in the shape of the LA restaurant scene shows: '[Entrepreneur] Suaya isn't worried. Enchanted by the potential he sees, he's busy identifying which young stars he will approach next to invest in Goa. Jake Gyllenhaal, the star of "Brokeback Mountain" and "Jarhead" is at the top of his list. "He's very hot right now, and I'm trying to get him," says Suaya. "We will get him."'
Jake's love of good food doesn't just extend to himself - he wants Atticus to have the very best too (Sprinkles do cupcakes especially for dogs, by the way). In June 2007, Jake attended a party that launched new tasty nibbles for dogs from The Honest Kitchen called Ice Pups: 'These are sold as do-it-yourself snacks for dogs, requiring pet owners to add warm water and freeze the treats into bite-sized chunks for their four-legged friends to enjoy on a hot summer day. The Honest Kitchen promotes health and nutrition for pets, providing a line of dehydrated foods that are nutritionally sound and made from natural ingredients.' The proceeds from the event went to Much Love Animal Rescue.
How about this for food for thought: In 2004, 'Kristin Davis was outbid at the Food Bank Annual Awards Dinner at Pier 60 for "a dinner prepared in your home by Mario Batali with Jake Gyllenhaal as his sous-chef," she shot back, "I get that for free." The dinner eventually went to Michael Stipe for $11,000.' Jake Gyllenhaal in your own kitchen, chopping veg? Lucky Michael Stipe. Although one does remember Parsleygate:.

ReplyDeleteMe! Me! I voted for Jake then! :)
We've heard him say that cookery books are his porn
I can just imagine Jake ogling a cooking magazine. "MY, WHAT A BIG SPICE RACK YOU HAVE?" LOL.
I consider myself sort of the American equivalent of "The Naked Chef."
Despite knowing that Jamie Oliver is actually not quite "naked" on his show, there's still something quite attractive about this sentence coming from Jake's lips.
Jake. Naked. And cooking. Are all too dangerous to be put in the same sentence.
"There's an art to busboying. You have to be able to stay away from the table, really. You have to be invisible, you have to be a ghost."
Like a ninja. Ninja-Jake?
Jake's love of good food doesn't just extend to himself - he wants Atticus to have the very best too
This is so sweet. I love Atticus, and I love Jake, so Jake loving Atticus just completes the trifecta.
"He's my brother so maybe I felt it even more acutely. I thought, 'Why hurt him? What has he done?'"
:(
Hi Fourplay! Good to see you :D Good for you for voting for Jake , and what a lot of other people did too. Thanks for commenting - I'm lovig those images of a naked, cooking ninja Jake :D
ReplyDeleteThat was such a beautiful comment of Maggie's - thanks for picking up on it :)
Love the post, WDW! How do you manage to find all this stuff, let alone have time to write it up so brilliantly!
ReplyDeleteThis caught my eye: "We've heard him say that cookery books are his porn"
I don't remember him saying that at all (and it's not the sort of thing I'd forget;) I have cookbooks,Jake ;) I like the idea of Jake being America's answer to The Naked Chef - can we do a Wife Swap type thing (Chef Swap) whereby Jake comes over here to be the UK's Naked Chef and the US get Jamie Oliver (sorry to inflict Jamie Oliver on my American friends, but all's fair in love, war, and Jaking :D)
Oh, and speaking of Jake, food and porn - that pic in the car!!!! I've never seen that one before either and I would definitely remember that! Hmm...either my memory's going or I'm a bad Gyllenhaalic:(
Yet another thing I didn't know was about Jake cooking for Michael Stipe - I'm a fan of REM so I would've loved to be a fly on the wall at that.
On a totally separate note, Maggie's comments about that scene in BBM make me want to cry:( Maggie is a much braver woman that me.I had to cover my eyes when I first saw that scene and to this day I've never been able to watch it.
Hi TL! Glad you liked the post - I had a huge amount of fun with this one - I'm not going to be able to do a post tomorrow so I put some extra hours into this one. The cookbooks are my porn quote came from an early interview which I have somewhere but didn't have the time to find. But I will find it and post the interview when I'm back.
ReplyDeleteI love the picture in the car! :D
Can you imagine having Jake cook for you! Worth every penny. A real treat for Michael Stipe.
The comment of Maggie's really got me too and I couldn't leave it out.
Hope you're having a good night!
PS Jusyt had to add - love the idea of Jake coming over and doing a cookery show :D
ReplyDeleteHey WDW! Thanks for leaving us plenty to er, get our teeth into (sorry!) while you're away :)
ReplyDeleteI think Jake should definitely do a Naked Chef series (memo to TV execs:don't tell him the title isn't literal) but he should also get involved with Jamie Oliver's School Dinners campaign (which I have to say, he deserves a lot of credit for, even if he is an annoying git!)but as TL Jr takes a packed lunch to school, Jake would have to come round in person to help me out with that- I'll even play REM Cds in the background if it helps ;)
I'm watching BBM tonight, I need to cleanse myself after watching Crash last night.
wow... this is a really rich post! double cream with honey and nuts on top! I don't know where to begin...
ReplyDeleteI've read some of them before here and there, but you have a magical way to blend all the little bits together.
I also remember from somewhere Maggie mentioned that Jake would love to meet Jamie Oliver. I am not the biggest fan of J.O. (I usually follow good old Delia's how to cheat recipes!), but I can see why Jake would like his show.
If Jake does a cook show here... mmm.... I dunno... I don't know if I can concentrate on the food, I'd just be looking at his face (or his hands when he chops stuff)...
Hi TL - groan - those jokes :D I should be able to post comments tomorrow evening, but I'll be relying on my phone. Hopefully, I won't get the shakes too bad! Back Wednesday lunchtime.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea about The Naked Chef - but maye an apron might be a good idea for some recipes ;) I never used to like REM but I'm definitely getting fond of Michael Stipes :) I'll have to dig out the old CDs.
Glad to know you're watching BBM - I wish I could - Mr WDW is riveted by the weather reports on News 24...
Ooh thanks Winterbird :) I like to put all the bits and pieces together. I had more bits I could've put in but I thought I could save those for another post, including the picture of Jake carrying a book by Jamie Oliver. I quite like Jamie, although some of his sayings drive me mad. I like his books. If Jake did a cookery show here we'd have to watch it over and over in order to get a grip on the recipe... I love the way Jake chops stuff.
ReplyDeleteOuch! Yes, WDW, we don't want Jake having any accidents! We could get him a see through apron;)
ReplyDeleteI'm stuck on SNIT atm, I can't watch that scene just once. Those gorgeous boys...*sigh*
You could always tell Mr WDW there's plenty of weather reports from Jake in BBM:storm coming in from the Pacific, gonna snow tonight for sure ;)
Good idea TL - see through apron :D Now if we could just get Jake to do the weather reorts as well... The trials and tribulations of only having one TV, at least Mr WDW is a Zodiac fan but I'm in a BBM mood :(
ReplyDeleteLol WDW, I like the idea of Jake doing the weather. Sod this A list Hollywood lark, Jake should just come over here and be a star of UK TV. Give us licence payers what we want - get rid of the pointless satellite BBC channels (and make Jonathan Ross take a pay cut - even though I do love him!) and give the money to Jake and the Jake Gyllenhaal channel.
ReplyDeleteAnd then I'd never moan about paying my licence fee again... The Jake Gyllenchannaal - why did noone think of it sooner? TL, you should be knighted for that one :) Jake could do the news, the weather, all the chat shows, as a personal favourite he could do some archaeology shows too - I'd never set foot outside again :D
ReplyDeleteOf course, the downside of this post is that I'm having to get my mind past the idea of Jamie Oliver naked :((
The Jake Gyllenchannaal - love it!! Great line up of shows too:) We also need a football show - Jake and Cesc Fabregas on the same screen *drool* Don't worry Jake, I'll explain the offside rule to you - not to mention hard tackles and going down in the box;) Sorry, I just can't help myself tonight. I better hit the hay. Nite everyone, and have a good trip WDW xx
ReplyDeleteOh TL, thanks so much for the laugh! I'll be around in the morning. Have a good night :D (PS I've never got the off-side rule - when you explain it to Jake, please can I listen in?)
ReplyDeleteJake and food - now that's a topic guaranteed to bring me out of the woodwork!! Great post and one of my favorite videos too! Jake cooking for Michael Stipe, *interesting*.... For a laugh, I once sent an email to Bon Appetit to ask whether they would consider featuring Jake on their last page celebrity interview. An editor wrote back that they would love to, but Jake is reticent about revealing personal information! Whatever. I say.... try harder! He doesn't strike me as all that reticent, at least not where food and family is concerned (as evidenced by great quotes in today's post, for example!). Take care everybody and I will keep an eye out for the Gyllenchannaal :) All Gyllenhaals, all the time...
ReplyDeleteLibby
PS, Really enjoyed reading the quixotic travelogue too, WDW.
Hi Libby - great comment! Good for you for contacting Bon appetit - if they tried harder, surely they'd get Jake. They just have to ask the right questions. Jake really does go well with food, doesn't he? None of this dieting and messing around with food, just good, natural, healthy ingredients and a very sexy guy in charge of the saucepans :D
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the travelogue - I'm missig that LA sunshine, that's for sure!
OMG, how do I adore posts like these! Winterbird said it all. You really know how to put all of this fantastic info together in a fantastic post! I especially love when you find a gem of a quote or interview that I had never seen before. Even if I have read it before you put it all together in a very interesting and fresh way. And I love Foodie Jake! You can see how much of a passion he has for food. Just as much as he does for acting. Wonderful thing, imo. I hope Jake and Mario do a food/travel special like Mario is doing with Gwyneth Paltrow. They are traveling Spain and trying different foods. Wouldn't it be fabulous to see Jake traveling around Italy or some other country. Let's try and make that happen. I do like Jamie Oliver and the school program he has in the UK, but Jake as Naked Chef...YES PLEASE. ;p
ReplyDeleteAww, that quote from Maggie touches the heart. The bond they have is such a gift. And she is so right. Jack did nothing to deserve that horrifying brutality.
Thanks so much, Get Real! I loved doing this post. I love how Jake has a real passion for food and cooking. That is a fabulous idea - Jake doing a culinary tour of a country - I would love to see that! I am so happy you liked the post!
ReplyDeleteAnother great post WDW. You are the master. I looooovvveee that picture in the car.
ReplyDeleteThe topic of Jake and food has always been a turn on of mine. I am always glad to see that I am not alone in that. :)
Have a safe trip. And thanks again for leaving us with such a yummy image.
Great post WDW, thank you!
ReplyDeleteI will carry that Naked Jake Cooking image with me all day long. :)
Winterbird wrote: "Wouldn't it be fabulous to see Jake traveling around Italy or some other country. Let's try and make that happen".
Oh that would be fantastic, Winterbird! I'd quit my job and chase them around my country! :D
Have a good day everyone!
As a devotee of the series, can I just say, BBC, please move heaven and earth and get Jake on Celebrity Masterchef - it would just be my ideal programme (after Jake appearing on Top Gear as the Star in a reasonably priced car) - Yes, I know it will never happen, but Jake and box of mystery ingrediants, John and Greg bellowing away in the background - TV heaven in AK Towers. (Apologies to those outside the UK who've no idea what I'm rambling about!)
ReplyDeleteI think WDW's mind would explode if Jake is to be a guest in Top Gear! :P
ReplyDeleteMorning everyone, just about to head up the motorway... First off...
ReplyDeleteOMG - Jake on Top Gear as the Star in the Reasonably Priced Car!!! How many times have I dreamt of Jake doing that? Dribble...
Morning Bird Girl! Yep, you're not alone in that. Plus a good reason for loving Jake is that he has such a healthy body, due to lots of good food and lots of exercise. This is one reason why I always fancy the older Jake :)
Hi Xenia! Pleased to put such a happy image in your head :D Jake would have such a great time touring Italy - although he'd have to put in a pitstop in England of course ;)
Hey Agent K - what can I say? Jake on Top Gear? One thing I love after Jake and food/wine/music is cars. So glad I'm not alone here on this. Oh yes, Jake would have to go on Masterchef too.
You are so right Winterbird :) I'm going to be dreaming of that all the way up the motorway today - with my attention firmly fixed on the road ahead of course ;)
I won't be able to post tonight but I should be able to comment via my phone. I do hope I see you all. I'll be back tomorrow lunch :D
Have a good day!
Well at least we know if the acting thing doesn't work out Jake won't go hungry :D He can cook for me anytime.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if this was the first time he met Michael Stipe. I know he posed for the eyeglass thing for him (Heath did as well)
Trekfan
"Well at least we know if the acting thing doesn't work out Jake won't go hungry :D He can cook for me anytime." [anonymous]
ReplyDeleteJake once said, in an interview, that he was hoping for an extremely long acting career.
I hope he gets his wish.
But Paul Newman has already had a very long acting career, plus the chance to share his good food with everybody who wants it, through his "Newman's own" line of food products. The profits go to charity.
I would love to see Jake give the rest of us a chance to sample his roast beef with bechamel sauce, and his spaghetti sauce Milanese. If there are enough of us who want these foods, it would be feasible to offer them in supermarkets or by mail order or online. If he wants to give the profits to charity, so much the better!
So, keep hoping, anonymous!
Errr - I'm back! A slight change of plan, due to three hours spent driving between motorways, trying to find one that hadn't been closed due to accidents. Sorry mum - I'll make it next week, honest :D So normal service is resumed, although I'm a bit frayed at the edges...
ReplyDeleteHi Trekfan - Jake can cook for me too - although we'll have to cook at is house as mine is way too small :D I was wondering about that with Michael Stipe too.
Hey Paul - I hope it's a very long acting career too, although Jake could design a line of cookware or sauces, ala Paul Newman, or write a cook book (Anon was Trekfan). I'd certainly buy anything Jake designed - although I may have to draw the line if he designed a car.
Hope everyone's having a far more productive and less wasteful and frustrating day than me.
It looks much calmer now in London today, didn't know there are still many road closed!
ReplyDeleteHeehee... if Jake designed a car, i think we can at least try to buy "a model" of it.
oops. pls delete one :)
ReplyDeleteHi Winterbird - it may be calmer but these cars can't help crashing into one another :( Bit unlucky to have one motorway closed for a major accident and then go off on the diversion to another one and just as I'm about to get on it they close that as well for air ambulances. Makes you feel glad to get home in one piece!
ReplyDeleteI think Jake should design a car - it would have lots of space to carry junk, sorry useful paraphernalia, and it would have a coffee cup holder. That's funny - we could buy a model of it, or maybe I could buy a tyre!
I deleted the dup :D
ReplyDeleteIt looks much calmer now in London today, didn't know there are still many road closed!
ReplyDeleteSeriously not calm in my bit of London right now - we both got soaked yesterday and so watched The Day after Tomorrow to keep in with the spirit of the weather over here at the moment.
Afternoon Agent K - TDAT is such a good film for wintry weather situations and in the summer we have Jarhead heat. I hear we're due more storms tomorrow. I think I'll seal the airlock with booze, Brokeback Mountain, the extras on TDAT and the new Top Gear DVD.
ReplyDeleteOh I love this post - who couldn't adore a man who likes to cook, is at home in the kitchen, and so beautiful as well *sigh* As if he wasn't fantastic enough as it is.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the weather over in your neck of the woods, WDW. Sometimes those days are nice for reading and DVD-watching, or breakfast in bed served by a beautiful man. :)
Hi Bertie - indeed, what's not to love :D 'Breakfast in bed served by a beautiful man'? Yes please!! I have someone in mind.... And his name begins with J and ends in e. Glad you liked the post :D
ReplyDelete
