Getting around and about and making films

More pictures of Heath Ledger's Joker have been unleashed and they are extraordinary. I don't know how it's possible but this Joker is terrifying, menacing and sexy all at the same time. And when these images will be matched with the voice, the effect will be amazing.

At one time, the idea of playing Batman himself appealed to Jake Gyllenhaal, as he told the Chicago Sun-Times back in 2004: 'It's a character I would have loved to do and it would have meant working with Christopher Nolan, who is such a genius.'

It's a small world

Maggie Gyllenhaal left the cast of The Private Lives of Pippa Lee to spend time with Peter and Ramona in England as Peter films An Education. However, Maggie intends to travel much further than that. It's been reported that Maggie is to star opposite Paul Bettany (who plays a shell-shocked soldier) in the 'romantic drama' South Solitary. 'Solitary follows the story of Bettany's character when he is recuperating in Tasmania. The lensing of the movie is expected to start sometime in 2008 and it will take place in a remote lighthouse off the coast of the Australian island state of Tasmania.'

Paul Bettany will be familiar to many of us from a couple of roles. In Wimbledon, a film I am unable not to watch each June/July, Paul played opposite Kirsten Dunst and Jake's The Day After Tomorrow co-star Austin Nichols and Jake was a visitor to the set (see above - September 2003). Not only that, Paul was a joy to watch as Chaucer in Knight's Tale alongside Heath Ledger. And now he is to play opposite Maggie. I feel like I say 'It's a small world' with disturbing regularity.

An Education

This week, the Daily Mail featured Carey Mulligan, a young actress, who, although 22 years old in real life, plays a 16 year old in An Education, in which she attracts the attention of Peter Sarsgaard's wheeling and dealing character. 'Carey's character, Jenny, 'lives this dull beige life in Twickenham'. Until, that is, an older man drives into her life... Everything changes when she meets David (Peter Sarsgaard), a man with fingers in many pies who drives a red Bristol car.' Here is another picture from the set.

Jake getting around and about

New pictures of Jake walking to a gym on 4 April reveal that his bad ankle has not affected his walking-backwards-to-avoid-paparazzi skills. A video of Jake and Reese walking to a car on the same day also confirms that, although Jake's ankle is well strapped up, he does seem to be moving much easier on it. That is a big relief, not least because there is now only a week to go before Jake goes back to work.

And thanks to IHJ for more pictures from Cabo - that Game Ready looks a heavy load to me.

And finally, snow skills...

And just because I woke up today to a very unusual site for southern England in April - thick snow - here is Jake building an igloo.

Includes pictures from IHJ, Photolicious, Entertainment Wise and the Daily Mail.

  2. Hi there Sandy :D Thanks for commenting. I love the Joker pics too. I really hope the pictures of Jake going to the gym means he is o the mend now, and that he's not overdoing it. Have a good Sunday!

Wheeeee! So true. Can't wait to see, and hear. :)

Maggie's upcoming project sounds really interesting too. Good to see Jake's ankle on the mend, and was Reese wearing purple for Heath's birthday? :)

  4. Hi Bertie :D I do lie the sound of all the GyllenGaard being busy and making movies for us. I don't get why I find the Joker so sexy but I suppose that is all to do with Heath.

I just heard that Charlton Heston died today - sad news. I remember being fortunate enough to see him on stage in London about 20 years ago when he appeared here in A Man for All Seasons. He was incredible in it, dominating that stage.

  5. and was Reese wearing purple for Heath's birthday? :)

If they wanted to pay some tribute, it think it would be Jake doing it. ;)

I think Jake and Reese suit each other, they seem happy together. It wouldn't surprise me if they got married!

  6. Hi anon - thanks for commenting :D

  7. Great pictures of Heath as Joker. I want to see the movie too.

Wonderful to see Jake more on the mend. Here's hoping he is fully healed by the start of Nailed filming.

I like the sound of the Maggie/Paul B. movie. I am sad to think it may be a long time before we see a Jake and Maggie picture again. I hope I am wrong. I miss them together. :/

Good to see a pic of Peter's new movie. Want to see that one too. Is there more than one pic, WDW. You mentioned there is another pic.

Snowing in the UK..wow. Hope you all are staying dry and safe this lazy Sunday. :)

  8. hey Good Real - good to see you :D I really like the sound of Maggie and Paul's movie - I'm definitely ready to see her in something lighter.

That was the only new pic from the set of An Education. There were a few more I posted the other day.

It's so weird here today - one minute it's sprig with the sun shining and the next it's heavy snow. It's nearly all melted now but so strange for here.

  9. Hi thanks for the updates.
The new pictures of Heath as the Joker look wonderful and obviously sexy.. and yeah 'The Joker' does look sexy and thats all down to Heath - your so right on that! Can not wait for the film - only reason im going to see it will be because of him mostly.... and maggie to.
Jake going to the Gym, thats good news..hopefully ankle on the mend...and he will be good to start his new film.

and Yes the weather is crazy here in the UK! One moment sunny...next snowing...i give up with it.

  10. Thank you for the joker pics and the info about Paul Bettany. I loved him in Knight's Tale.

  11. Hi Cassie - I am looking forward to seeing much more of the Joker in the summer. It'll be hard, though, I'm sure. I'm looking forward to seeing Maggie in it as well :)

Thanks Trekfan :D I loved Paul Bettany in Knight's Tale.

  12. I think Heath's Joker is the most sexy and scary one yet... my heart will be beating fast for two different reasons when I finally see the movie :)

Jake is a bigger shopaholic than me! But it's good that at least his ankle seems to be on the mend.

I like Paul Bettany! it's such a small world indeed, I know he was also once considered for the role Joker...

I'm off to sleep now... enjoy the rest of the evening everyone.

  13. Talking of Man for All Seasons, WDW, wasn't it sad about Paul Scofield as well?

I love Paul Bettany (but not as much as I love Austin Nichols) :)
Where is Austin's label? Where is Peter's? :D

I think Peter's film looks pretty good, do we have any more idea where he is at the moment?

    So many questions ...

OK, you were right about the snow, where are we on our accumulator bet at the moment? Thanks to you and Ruby for a fun day yesterday despite public transport's attempts to sabotage it **

    ReplyDelete
  14. hey anouska... it's definitely a nice surprise to see Austin's "John McEnroe" head-band there :)

Actually I think Jake can pull off easily as a pro-tennis player in movies too. Imagine him in all white shorts and Fred Perry white tee.... :P

    ReplyDelete
  15. Not sure Jake is quite lissom enough to get to the shots, winterbird :):) He'd look nice, though.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi Winterbird - hope you're having a good time :D I didn't know that about Paul and the Joker - blimey, the world just shrank again!

Hi Anouska - thanks for yesterday :D And two fingers up to public transportation - grumble, grumble... ;) I'll add the labels - I'm always forgetting 'em. Yeah, it was sad about Scofield the other week. Time flies though, can't believe I saw Charlton Heston about 20 years ago. I saw Ian McKellern and Michael gambon in roles that same year and I remember those just as vividly too. I have got to start getting to the theatre again...

Ooh Winterbird, yes. I want to see Jake in tennis gea. I also want to see him play cricket on my village green :D

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm ignoring you're not 'quite lissom' enough comment :D

    ReplyDelete
  18. ^^^ ignore my spelling, I'm on the stella ;D

  19. I did wonder :) *

  20. You got snow. It sounds like you got Mid West weather to me. It was really cold two nights ago and now it pretty warm. We will have CGI wolves before you know it. ;)

I love the new Joker pix. I am in total agreement about the sexiness. I wonder how I will react when I see the movie. I think that it is going to hit me real hard.

It's good to see Jake back to his backwards walking self.

Hope you all are well today.

    ReplyDelete
  21. hi everyone *waves*

I feel a bit bad that I didn't have an travel problems yesterday. :/ I was safe home by 10.

After waking up to a winter wonderland, it's been sunny here all afternoon.

oooh, interesting and eclectic post there WDW. Heath's Joker in a nurse's uniform (how strange that sounds); Paul Bettany; that tall dude with the cute grin (what's his name again......?); a bit of Saarsy, (who's probably gutted that he didn't run into us in London yesterday) and that other guy we all like. Very nice. :D

I bet Jake would look good in cricket whites on the village green, WDW. Although with tennis whites we'd see more leg. :D

    ReplyDelete
  22. Aagghhh - Blogger ate my comment..

Hey there Bird Girl - I'm looking out for the wolves - and Wet Sam for that matter ;D

It is good to see Jake looking better on his feet - although practising his backwards walk. It is going to be such a rollercoaster of emotion watching The Dark Knight - I am looking forward to it though very much :D

Hope you're having a good Sunday!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Waves to Ruby!

Glad you got home OK and early. Wasn't the snow beautiful? :D I know, Peter's probably kicking himself right now for an opportunity missed.

I see what you're saying about the tennis shorts. But a cricket match can last three days and you get cucumber sandwiches :D Hope you're enjoying your Sunday!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Those igloo building pics are very odd. :D

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah, I don't think they'll catch on round here.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey WDW not to be picky but why did you add Saarsy and whats his face to the labels and not Reese?.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Picky Anon - I think you'll see that I've already said in these comments today that I'm always forgetting to put people in the tags. I think you'll also find that I've also forgotten other people unintentionally, like the lovely Carey.

So don't try and cause trouble with the 'whats his face' comments, eh? This is a polite site and that's how I like it. I'm not going to spend my time apologising for my lousy memory with the tags, especially in a post like this which is full of people.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm sure we can forgive you for forgetting to tag everyone WDW. Sometimes commenters even forget to put their own names! ;-)

I just watched lovely James in The Last King of Scotland. Very good movie (if a bit grim in places) and excellent performances from the whole cast. Nice to see Gillian Anderson. I like her :) Can you fit her into a Jake post somehow? :D

    ReplyDelete
  29. Evening Ruby :D ooh that takes me back to our Bafta experience when we saw James and Forrest as we did - happy sigh - oh and Jake.

I like Gillian Anderson too - I believe she presented Jake with an award once so I can definitely get her into a post :D

    ReplyDelete
  30. ooh, what award was that? I like David Duchovny too, so maybe you could squeeze him in there as well. :D

    ReplyDelete
  31. I may be wrong but I think Gillian gave Jake an award for best new actor for This Is Our Youth when he was in London. I can get that in a post all right. I'll find the ics :D

    David's more difficult.... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hope you've all been enjoying the snow today, I certainly have!

Love the post, WDW :) Nice to see some old familiar faces again and the whole degrees of separation thng is funny.

I'm really looking forward to seeing The Joker but I'm dreading it at the same time.

Oh, and I have to ask, what on earth are those igloo pics all about?!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Good to see you TL! Have you been making snow angels?? Snowmen? It looked gorgeous here.

I find it funny too, how so many people in Hollywood, and even further afield in the business, end up working together at some time.

The igloo pics are a delightful mystery!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I spent most of my time in the snow trying (and mostly failing) to avoid incoming snowballs :D

So now I've told you that, you can tell me about the igloo pics;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. When I find the kids who were snowballing my car... mutter, mutter, mutter.

I really don't know the igloo mystery. They're from an old photoshoot and have no explanation. They are bizarre! But they show how useful Jake would be should we be marooned with him in an Arctic wilderness. I bet he can dig ice fishing holes too.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh, ok, sorry! I thought you meant you couldn't say cos you'd signed the Official Secrets Act or something:)

But yeah, lol! Jake would come in very handy should we ever be stranded in the Arctic together. Even if he couldn't build an igloo or dig fishing holes, he would know how to keep us warm:D

    ReplyDelete
  37. Good point, TL. Jake would be a great asset for keeping us warm - the TDAT body warming exercise that Sam and Laura demonstrated for us in the frozen library. I bet Jake can wrestle salmon from the paws of grizzly bears as well :D

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes, that scene in the library was exactly what I was thinking of, how did you guess?

And not to nit pick or anything, but I'm sure it's polar bears they have in the Arctic, not grizzlies - and I don't think salmon make it that far either;) But I'm sure someone as resourceful as Jake in the cooking department could sort us out some food somehow:D

    ReplyDelete
  39. That's true, TL Polar bears in the Arctic. I must have been transported in my fantasy to Alaska or Canada with the grizzlies (I've been watching a David Attenborough programme on tigers this evening so it's having an influence). Jake could do a Ray Mears and rustle up a culinary treat with some water rushes, berries and a bit of reindeer. Jake would be great in a survival situation.

I fear I have to go to bed :( Mr WDW has a 5am start in the morning. See you later xx

    ReplyDelete
  40. David Attenborough is a legend:)

I can just picture Jake the hunter gatherer, but reindeer!? Noooo!!!!! that's like eating Bambi's mum and dad!

5 am? Ouch!Poor Mr WDW :( Nite xx

  41. I tend not to see very many Paul Bettany movies, because he has played villains in a lot of thrillers lately. I watch thrillers sparingly....

But I have seen him in "Da Vinci Code, "Master and Commander," and "A Beautiful Mind." I looved his work in those films. He is a great talent.

That's good news about Jake's ankle.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Morning everyone - like winter again out there.

    Morning TL :D

Hi Paul - Oh yes, I'd forgotten about the Da Vinci Code - I didn't like Paul or anyone in that. But I did enjoy Master and Commander.

Have a good Monday (if that can be possible) everyone :D

    ReplyDelete
  43. Morning everybody :)

So how does it feel snow on UK in April?! When I saw it yesterday on the news I was quite suprised! Guess so were you maybe :)

Thank you WDW for another interesting post, I'm looking forward to see TDK too, I'm sure another great performance of our beloved Heath.
It's good to see Jake's better and I can say I definitely love his B-side as much as his A-side :P ...maybe one day we'll even see him doing the moon-walking to annoy the paps (or rather amuse them/us) :P

Wish you all a great week :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi there Good Girl :D Hope you had a good weekend. The snow was a major surprise. The poor daffodils :( I like how you refer to Jake's A and B side! Both are fine by me too. Maybe we'll see the moonwalk when he gets going on the Liman project ;)

    Hope everyone's having a good day :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. Good afternoon chaps,hi WDW. So it's not just me then...finding Heath's Joker incredibly sexy as well as psychotic and menacing. Some of the clips I've seen either of the filming process or from the finished film show him long, lithe and loose, giving a really alluring physicality to a terrifying character.

As you quoted Michelle in the previous post,he is "physical and beautiful and strong and masculine". God knows how she is going to bring herself to watch TDK! So many involved in the film have flagged it up as a mind-blowing and iconic performance, destined to be one of the jewels of Heath's legacy, but like so many of you I'm going to struggle to watch it without getting upset. Just a short trailer (with THAT voice as you say,WDW) has reduced me to tears more than once, so I'll be taking plenty of Kleenex to the cinema with me :-(

Which reminds me,I once went to the pictures (doesn't that age me?!)with my mate many years ago on May Day.When we went in it was a fine late spring evening, when we came out everywhere was under at least 2 inches of snow! The Great British Weather - it's many things but never boring or predictable.

I think it's a pity that Maggie's had to pull out of "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee" because from what I've read about the book upon which it's based it promises to be an involving and thought-provoking film, just Maggies's style - but I really respect her for putting Ramona and Peter first and giving up the job to spend time with her family.

I like the sound of her potential role in "South Solitary" too. I loved Paul Bettany in "A Knight's Tale","The Da Vinci Code" and the wonderfully feel-good "Wimbledon" (bet it made you feel good,eh Nouskie??!) It is a weird, sort of incestuous world in Hollywood, so many disparate lives crossing paths and/or going their separate ways because of the industry they work in.

As for Peter's latest project, I can't wait to see "An Education". This too is based on a true story, the book from which it springs was a memoir of the author's early life and intriguing past,in the part taken by Carey Mulligan. Peter is such a fine actor and the thought of that soft velvety, voice with an English accent - I'm all a-quiver! ;-)

Love the idea of you working Gillian Anderson into a post,WDW. Great actress, gorgeous woman :-)

And before I put a welcome sock in it, Jake walking backwards (for Christmas?)because the Paps have tracked them down again?! It's all getting very silly. Ho hum! Just glad his leg seems to be on the mend in time for the start of the "Nailed" project - and how could I forget???!!! My good friend, and fellow Brokie/Gyllenhaalic, Lisa, who lives in South Carolina, is taking the 2 hour drive up to the "Nailed" set next Friday with her bright, sparky and photogenic 9 year old daughter who has won a role as an extra in the film!! Though I'll be green with envy I'm keeping everything crossed that Jake might be on set at the same time and Lisa will at least get to see him,if not meet him in person! I shall keep you posted!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Michelle Williams has a new movie coming up: "Deception," scheduled to open on April 25. It also has Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman.

As for Jake's ankle: sprains are tricky. The severe ones can take months to heal, but mild ones can be okay after two or three weeks. I hope jake had the mild variety

(My expertise in this matter: considerable, as I have sprained the sdame ankle several times. :-( )

    ReplyDelete
  47. Okay, we got one nine year old scout and her Mom on the set of Nailed - come on, guys we've got to work on this. The more I know about filming, the more I want to know.

For Jake's sake, man, walking backwards is so L.A. - I had a habit of reading while walking, in NYC, and kept getting yelled at and called vile names.

Im playing with an idea of making a deck of cards using iconic or archetypal figures, sort of like a Tarot deck. Heath as Joker gave me this idea. Dozy Embrace will be another face card. I really like this idea.

O god there are three commentaries for Bladerunner final cut. guess I'll be hanging on to this DVD for awhile - Im learning so much, already, from directors commentary.

Guardian says Rain and Sleet in London today. Travel safetly, sweetpeeps.

  48. Yeay, made it home and cracked open the stella - need it, phew.

Thanks, Nadine, for the fab comment. I now exactly what you mean about what it will be like to see Heath's Joker. I've been all rght with the pictures but it's when the voice goes with it, as in the trailer...

I think the story for An Education sounds very intriguing, as does Peter's character. And maggie's new project sounds so exotic and unusual.

Gret news about your friend and her daughter. Can't wait to hear more about that so keep me in touch!

Hi there Paul :D I didn't know Michelle was in Ewan's new film. Goodie!

Hey Pia, good to see you :D I'm fascinating my moviemaking too - that's something Jake has taught me and I'm grateful. It really added to my enjoyment of Zodiac and Rendition, having followed them being filmed.

I like the deck of cards idea, like those Joker cards they made a while back to promote The Dark Knight.

I have experienced most type of weather today and I'm glad to be back in my coccoon :D

    ReplyDelete
  49. I just stopped in to say hello. I hope you all are having a good day. WDW it sounds like a good evening to cuddle up with some Zodiac. What cha think?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hey, good to see you Bird Girl :D That's a fine idea. I have the place to myself tonight, it's cold out there, and it seems like a great night to cuddle up with jake - oops, sorry, Zodiac :D
