Serendipity - WDW's birthday adventure with Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth and Jonathan Ross - and Maggie in London

Sometimes you just have to wonder and last night was one of those occasions. Wet Dark and Wild had its first birthday yesterday and I have always been very aware of, and not to mention grateful for, the luck and good fortune that has followed me about during that year - now and again it's hard even to believe. The name of this site was inspired by Robert Downey Jr, an actor for whom, through his portrayal of Paul Avery in Zodiac and his obvious friendship and professional support for Jake Gyllenhaal, I have a deep regard. 'Wet, dark and wild' seemed, to me, to sum up everything that drew me to Jake.

So how amazing that on the birthday of the site, I go to see the recording of the Jonathan Ross show, thanks to Ruby, and discover that we're not seeing the filming of tonight's show after all (that took place on Monday) but next Friday's instead. And there on the show, direct from the London premiere of Ironman, was Robert Downey Jr himself. And not only that, the other guest was another co-star of Jake's, Gwyneth Paltrow, who was wearing the deadliest pair of heels I have ever seen. Having said that, RDJ's footwear was pretty incredible and ubercool, an effect highlighted by bright red socks. I did kinda wonder if Robert had kept his Ironman boots as a souvenir.

The show itself was a great experience to watch, although delayed for a couple of hours due to the premiere. Robert was the first guest and endured the first degree on Marvel Comics - Jonathan Ross is a self-admitted Marvel comic geek (sorry, enthusiast) and even came along prepared with his very own Ironman mask (silver foil, cardboard box and the finger from a large pointy hand) and machine gun that fired large numbers of elastic bands to an alarming noise. We were in the second row and I did fear that my Jonathan Ross TV debut could be me getting twanged on the nose by a rubber band. The picture below is illicit so it's wonky.

Otherwise, Robert was asked about his family and whether he had ever smoked a pipe. Not unexpectedly, the answer was yes. His motivation, he said, for doing Ironman was that he wanted to do a film more than eight people would see - to demonstrate the point, Robert asked how many people in the audience had heard of his last film called Fur, which showed him depicting a character who suffered from a condition that led to long hairs growing over his entire body. Point made.

Robert was very relaxed but clearly not an expert on comic books although he did appear to be a fan of the extremely likeable and hilarious Jonathan Ross (his mime of his dog's behaviour when it had a stick stuck up its backside is not something I'm going to forget in a hurry). One thing that struck me about Robert is how, now and then, he made me think I was in the same room as Paul Avery - he got the look.

Gwyneth was beautiful and very tall (not surprising, considering the shoes). She wore a different dress to the one she wore at the premiere - a lovely black number with a slightly longer skirt. She mentioned Proof as the last big film she worked on, but only mentioned Antony Hopkins. Gwyneth seemed to indicate that she wished she were married to the lead singer of Radiohead instead of Coldplay and she said that her days of the microdiet were over - pregnancy gave her a deep appreciation of icecream that I can truly understand. She supped a pint of Guiness like a good'un (her favourite drink - she took it away with her) and had a good go at a Scottish accent but then she said that the only paper she read was the Financial Times, that she didn't watch movies, just documentaries, and my old view of Gwyneth from Proof came flooding over me and I think I may have nodded off. Great shoes though.

Just for the halibut, here is a picture of me outside the hospitality area of the BBC, next to the icon of 60s' and 70s' UK TV - the Doctor's Tardis.

Back to Jake... A poster on IMDb seems to indicate that next week filming on Nailed is moving back to the Statehouse in Columbia so more sightings will hopefully follow.

Also, there is the rumour by 'sources' (them again) that Jake is to open an organic restaurant in LA with Chris Fischer. We've heard this rumour before - in fact, I think this one pops up each summer - but, if it's true this time, may I just point out that my bar skills are legendary and I can do the washing up if I have to. I was amused by the NY Daily News: 'Jake Gyllenhaal wants to open a restaurant. One source says, "Cooking is his big hobby and his passion. It's nothing for him to whip up miso-marinated cod with braised microgreens." Note to self: don't go to Jake Gyllenhaal's restaurant.' What on earth is miso-marinated cod? Is it tasty?

The Gyllenhaals in London

Yesterday, Maggie Gyllenhaal was seen in Holland Park, London. Ruby and I went through Holland Park ourselves yesterday. The day before, Maggie was spotted in a cafe with Ramona and, judging from this picture, Maggie isn't the only Gyllenhaal in London at the moment - I do believe that is Maggie's father Stephen enjoying the spring weather with his family.

Sounds like you girls had a good time. RDJ is such a fascinating man. He has overcome so much in his life. He is truly remarkable.

I agree with you about GP. She is such a bore. I was so disappointed when Chris Martin married her.

I love that picture of you. It is adorable.

It was a good evening, I'd definitely do it again.

(if we are not banned forever because WDW took a sneaky pic :D :D)

Jonathan Ross was 'on' all the time, entertaining the audience even when the cameras weren't rolling.

I thought Gwyneth acquitted herself quite well actually. But RDJ was definitely the highlight. I still can't believe how lucky that was.

Me too, I love picture of you, love the layers - cant wait until my package from LLBean arrives, maybe tomorrow.

GP does not have world class legs, in my humble opinion.

You are sure travelin' in the right circles! But Im not surprised you need to sleep a week!

So good to see Maggie & child and apparently, grandpa!

thanks for this delish post, WDW.

p.s. More comments, Ruby! Pu-leeeze! thanks for taking our darlin' out on the town.

Serendipity... my favourite word. I've skim-read the posts and sounds exciting. Am off out now but will read in depth when I get back.. looking forward to more news.

Did RDJ mention Zodiac or Jake? Was Gwyneth the slightest bit funny? When does it air? That's enough questions to keep you going hehe.

See you guys later xx

Hi Bird Girl - it was fab! I'm so grateful to Ruby. I think RDJ is simply gorgeous and when Jonathan said 'This is next week's show, haven't you heard?' I never fell off my chair. I had seen an autocue with 'Interview with Gwyneth Paltrow' written on it and I was trying to work it out!

GP nearly sent me to sleep it's true but she was more beautiful than I'd imagined. Glad you liked the pic of me, not sure about posting it, but since I posted the pic of me and Peter it doesn't seem to matter!

Hey Rubes! It was a great night. I was sneaky with the pic wasn't I? You can always count on me. JR was sensational - a natural and really likeable and funny. We were so lucky! Yes, let's do it again...

Hi Pia! I'm a layer girl :D What are you getting from LL Bean? I'm definitely sleepy and right now trying to persuade Mr WDW to cook for me (not very succesfully)!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sheba - posting at the same time :D It airs next Friday. RDJ didn't mention Zodiac or Jake unfortunately - I was hoping JR would pick up on the Jake theme! Gwyneth was funny about stout and using English words - she was better than I thought she'd be and she said some lovely things about her kids (and why she called her daughter Apple) but I still think I'd be bored in the pub with her. Or maybe she'd surprise me?

See you later!

My Gosh, WDW, you are one lucky lady as of late. First, getting to meet Peter Saarsgard, now being in the second row from Robert Downy Jr. and Gynneth Paltrow at the Jonathan Ross show! I really really like RDJ as an actor and have for years. I happened to the see the previews for Ironman at the movies recently, and it looks intriguing. RDJ has a certain blase I guess you'd say attitude which is very amusing. Looks good!

Loved the picture of you, and the one of Ramona and family. She's growing up!

Glad to hear the rumors again about a Jake and Chris restaurant venture. I've always loved that idea, good luck to them if it's true. :)

Hey WDW in the face of universal syncronicity and serendipity aka KARMA Mr. WDW should wrap you in warm linens and wait upon you. just sayin'

and since you asked: periwinkle windbreaker, three pima cotton tanktops (white, cream and black and white stripe), linen scoop neck sweater, sand-colored, blue sunwashed sweatshirt, and some other stuff. Yay summertime!

Ruby said...

Gwyneth does have rather skinny legs, but don't they all?

I loved RDJ's boots (starting to think I might have a bit of a footwear fetish). You can see he was wearing them at the premier too. They looked like army boots but the front part was made of something much softer than leather. I need to find these boots. Mr Ruby would love them.

Gwyneth was quite entertaining when she described how she first met RDJ - late one night in a hotel in Toronto! He started snuggling up to his wife in the Green Room at that point. :D

WDW - did you think JR was wearing coloured contacts or his eyes really that blue? :/

There was no mention of Zodiac or Jake. Closest was Gwyneth saying that Proof was her last lead role prior to doing Iron Man. She has only done small cameo parts in between. Even then she said it was 'with Anthony Hopkins'. That sentence ended too soon :(

Not sure if we should tell you about the song the house band sang. It was for the audience only, it won't be broadcast. :D ;-)

Ruby said...

I feel we are neglecting Michael Aspel! :D

Nice chap, but the old clips of Miss World made me cringe - racist, sexist and probably every other kind of 'ist.

Never thought I'd get to yell 'Crackerjack!' (probably only Brits of a certain age will get that reference :D)

Anonymous said...

Ruby, come on, dish it out, sugar! I want to know EVERYTHING!
Whut are girlfriends FOR, anyway!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bertie :D I am so lucky, sometimes it's embarrassing! I love RDJ's attitude but he's kind and generous with it.

I hope one of these days we all get to eat a delicious meal in Jake's restaurant :D I wouldn't mind being the wine advisor...

Hey Pia - I'll pass that on to Mr WDW! Although he has just made me some veggie bacon sandwiches :D You're gonna look stonking in the summer (that's a compliment).

Hi Rubes - I'm with you on the boot fetish - love Robert's. That was a good story of Gwynnie's about meeting RDJ in the Toronto hotel room. Must have been when she was there for Proof, I reckon. Ohhh the houseband song.... :D

I have it in my mind to try and find a Jake link for Michael Aspel... He was pretty funny though and I loved Crackerjack when I was a kid. I'm sure he had a thing with Miss Sierra Leone...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I yelled Crackerjack - I'm proud of it and stand by it...

Anonymous said...

Squee! WDW you look fabulous! So glad you and Ruby had such fun at JR. I am sure I would have been rolling my eyes at some of Gwynnie's comments, lol. I like her just not some of her pretensions. RDJ is awesome and sounds like a fun interview.

Great to see Maggie, Ramona and what looks very much like Stephen. Wish Jake and Peter were with them. We need pics of Jake and Ramona!

Ruby said...

Pia - the house band are called "Four Poofs and a Piano'. the song was kinda graphic...... :D

How did that chorus go WDW.? ..you were singing it on the way home.... ;-)

Anonymous said...

hey you guys are driving me crazy! what were the lyrics the Poofs sang? I luv them! they were so chargrined when Jake said he was single for the ladies only.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Get Real! I'm glad you like the pic - I was thinking of Dr Who Tom Baker at the time... Wouldn't mind seeing Jake as a time lord. I was definitely rolling my eyes at some of Gwyn's statements but, to be fair, she was a little more fun than I expected. I was distracted by the shoes....

And I would love to see pics of Jake and his niece :D

Go one Rubes, tell 'em the name of the song. I was about to and Mr WDW said I couldn't as it was too rude!

Iggy said...

Wow. Lucky girls getting RDJ as your guest of the night! Shame neither of them mentioned Jake, but hey ho.

Your luck has certainly been in lately WDW!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I will say, Pia, that it had something to do with bottoms...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Rosie :D It would've been great to have said hello to RDJ - I would've loved to have told him how much I enjoyed Avery in my favourite movie :)

Ruby said...

I believe the word 'bottom' was used in the song WDW. As a verb. There was also something about controlling the depth and speed...... and beyond that I ain't going. :D

Ruby said...

Are any of the other Brits having trouble with the BBC tonight? It's all weirdly pixilated on my TV, all BBC channels are like that but others are fine.

I wonder if we broke something yesterday. :/

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Ruby, no problems with BBC here, I just watched Julian Clary's Have I Got News For You with no problems (I was imagining us in the next studio at the time :D)

I'm relieved to say I can remember few of the lines form 'the song' - I think you're doing better than me :D

Anonymous said...

I love the rudeness of British comics! oh well I suppose I'll find the song on UTUBE one a these days. (honestly Mr WDW!)

Miso marinated codfish sounds like the old traditinal "salt codfish" -
eeeek! "whats the matter with Mary Jane, lovely codfish cakes for dinner again. . . "

Although I love the thot of jake and chris in restaurant business -

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the update. And it was great you got to see RDJ. I was at a talk show several years ago in NYC. I got to see a taping of Conan and Jon Stewart. Too bad I was at Jon Stewart in Dec of 2001 cause just a few short months later in May Heath was on the show

I had not heard this rumor before about Jake opening up a restaurant. It would make sense that since he likes cooking that he would open a restaurant. And since he and Chris are friends I can't think of a better partner.

But I think it is a wait and see attitude we have to take to see if this is true.

and miso is a type of Japanese soup and it is not bad

Trekfan

Anonymous said...

Hey Trekfan! The soup's good but miso paste is VERY salty. sounds too much like salt cod to me!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia - I've gotta say I'm not too keen on the sound of a marinated salty cod but I'm prepared to work my way through Jake and Chris' menu.

Hi Trekfan - it's so much fun seeing a familiar show filmed - I couldn't believe the number of lights an cameras and the studio was so much smaller than it looks on the tv. I'm definitely adopting the 'wait and see' with this restaurant story - it all sounds very familiar and very thirdhand as usual!

Anonymous said...

O I see that miso and saki is a common marinade for fish, so I should not be so negative - Im just not crazy about cod. however since both jake and chris must know how to do fish, since they are M Vineyard residents, I would trust them.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

As a Brit, Pia, I have to get past the idea of only having cod served in batter with chips and mushy peas :D

Great insights into the making of the Jonathan Ross show,WDW and Ruby, sounds like a good time was had by all! How could you not with the legendary RDJ on the menu - and Michael Aspel to boot?! Crackerjack!!!

Love the photos of Robert being affectionate with Jake - but where was the name check on JR? How could Gwyneth mention "Proof" and not mention Jake? If I'd been in her position (!) I'd still be trying to wipe the goofy grin off my face!

And you stood by the Tardis!!! How fab is that??!! I too would love to see Jake as a time-lord,either in Dr.Who or Torchwood. What I wouldn't give to see him snog Captain Jack Harkness!!! (Pauses for quick rub down with the Radio Times ;-) ).

Love the shot of 3 generations of the Gyllenhaal family munching in London....and would love to see Jake and Chris's organic project come to fruition in LA. It would be a great way for them to see much more of each other, which has to be a good thing, while realising a shared ambition and indulging their mutual passion for food. Fingers crossed :-)

Thanks for that fabulous account of your Jonathan Ross/RDJ experience - so glad you both had a brilliant time and yes, fate, serendipity, karma, whatever you want to call it, you definitely got it by the bucketload and you deserve it:) Love the pics too:) But don't let TL Jr hear you say the Tardis is an icon of the 60s and 70s - it's pretty popular in the 00s too and I have pics of TL Jr by the one outside Earl's Court tube station and at the Dr Who exhibition to prove it ;) Really looking forward to watching JR next week, although they don't usually show shots of the audience, do they? so I won't be able to play spot WDW and Ruby :(
Have to say I love GP's shoes and dress from the premiere but she does seem a bit of a miserable cow, doesn't she? And I don't understand how an actress can not watch films, but hey...

As for the rumour about Jake's restaurant,if I had a pound for every time I've read a similar story I'd have enough money to open my own restaurant,so I agree with Trekfan, let's wait and see.

Thanks for the pic of Maggie, Stephen and Ramona.I guess Peter was busy filming at the time. Is it too late to ask Kirstin Gore to write a scene into Nailed where Jake's character comes over to London for a state visit? :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone - conked out last night, I was so tired after the night before :) How are you doing Ruby?

Hi Nadine - Jake snogging Capn Jack? I suppose there are worse things! I love that London has some Gyllenhaals in it - now all we need is one or two more :D

Hey TL - Please apologise to TL JR for me - I forgot that people still watch Dr Who now - I've not seen it since Tom Baker left!

They said that there wouldn't be any audience shots and if there were it would only be the beautiful people :D I think GP was trying not to be miserable but it can feel a bit like a losing battle. Great idea about the script!

have a great Saturday!

Ruby said...

Good Morning.

I'm tired, but as usual these days I have decorating to do. Mr Ruby is preparing strongly caffeinated beverages to help me through it. :D

Capt Jack snogging Jake?..... what are you trying to do to me here? I barely coped with him snogging James Marsters. *thud* *ded* etc etc

ah well best get on, have a good Saturday everyone. Lovely and sunny here. :)

Hi, just catching up on yesterday's post today... My Zodiac Director's Cut DVD arrived yesterday - finally! Not sure if I should tell you what I did yesterday evening... I popped it into the player immediately to watch the Jake + RDJ commentary and... fell asleep... It's not their fault though (I think...) - I was just very tired... Although I think at least during the part I managed to watch Jake and RDJ were definitely too quiet!!!

Great to read about your evening at JR and so lucky that you were at the show with RDJ - and GP (I think? LOL)! What a shame though, that both didn't mention Jake!

About the rumour regarding Jake and Chris opening a restaurant... I also had heard about it before, but personally only in comments on the DCF - I don't think I ever read the stories those comments were based on, so seeing this contactmusic story myself this time I am - for reasons unknown even to myself - a little bit more excited (however reliable that story on contactmusic might be ...). Dreaming of a trip with a bus full of Jakefans to that restaurant. Do you think they would allow a bunch of mentally 13year olds in their restaurant? We probably would have to bring one or two adults...

Are you Brits on your way to London today? Cruising the streets to find some Gyllenhaals? How sweet that Stephen seems to be there too!

Hope you all have a great Saturday - it's wonderful weather here!

Oh, one last thing! You are such teases about that song that was played on the show!!! You need to tell us everything - otherwise our fantasy will go wild!

Hello WDW, thanks for the Jonathan Ross & Maggie in London updates! Great stuff! And, before I forget, HAPPY HAPPY 1-YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!! Sorry I missed the celebrations but I was off line for a couple of days...

I'm glad you think so highly of RDJ and his performance on Zodiac! I was hooked every time he was on screen. His portrayal of Paul Avery was mesmerising.

About Maggie... didn't she also hang around Notting Hill and Holland Park last year, or the last time she was spotted in London? Must be a favourite area of hers...

Have a nice weekend!
Paola

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Ruby :D Beautiful warm day today - perfect for some DIY ;) Glad you have such a pleasing image in your head!

Hey there Uli - About time you got the DVD! Er, not quite sure it's supposed to have that effect though - you'll have to watch it all weekend to make up for it. I must listen to the RDJ and Jake commentary again...

Great idea about the roadtrip to J&C's restaurant :D I think they'd love to have us! Good to hear the song's got you guessing - I'll ask Ruby to sing it to you :D No London trip this weekend but I reckon there's one on the horizon :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good to see you Freetraveller! I absolutely loved RDJ's performance in Zodiac and it's a big part of why that's my favourite film.

I believe that Jake stayed around Notting Hill too when he was over here for the play - it is such a lovely part of London. Have a good weekend too and thanks for the anniversary wishes :)

BirdGirl said...

Happy weekend everyone,

Unfortunately that mean I have to work out in the yard. It is always a daunting task due to my allergies. I am on a break from it right now so I thought I would stop by and say hi.

Hi!

I too love the idea about a road trip to J&C's restaurant. If it materializes we just might have to find a way to make it happen.

Anonymous said...

Hey, it works! Not only as an business idea, but as a metaphor - and a song!

"You can get anything you want at Jakey's Restaurant" la la la la

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Bird Girl - sympathise with the allergies - I'm still not able to eat orange fruit after my mango attack the other week :( And now I'm got the May sneezes early. BUT on the upside, all of the tulips are out, the trees are in leaf, it's warm, sunny and I can turn my heating off for the year! Or is that impetuous...?

Yep, J&C's will be a major stoppig point on the LA tour - just think - there we could Jake and eat and drink all at the same time! And, if they have seating outside, even get an LA tan!

Hi Pia! You should be put in charge of doing the radio commercials :D
