The morning after - The Oscar recap featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathway and a cast of thousands...

What a night. While I wait for the coffee to have some affect and contemplate where in the office might be the most suitable place for a discreet nap, there's time for a look at what was for me the highlight in a ceremony that went on for an extraordinary amount of time: the Jake Gyllenhaal Bit.


Jake and Amy Adams (a nominee herself and wearing an extremely long dress)presented the awards for Best Documentary Short Subject and Best Live Action Short Film. The latter went to Luke Matheny for 'God of Love'. He also got one of the biggest laughs of the night. "I should have gotten a haircut."


As for the important stuff - what Jake was wearing - we hear from JJ that 'Jake wore a black made-to-measure Salvatore Ferragamo tuxedo, with double breasted jacket and gros grain details, paired with a pair of black leather Tramezza lace-up shoes.'


As mentioned in last night's update, Jake was able to share a moment with nominee Michelle Williams as well as her partner for the evening Busy Philipps.




Jake was also photographed with another of his co-stars, Gwyneth Paltrow, who had some rather unsettling news for Jake... 'Gwyneth Paltrow, apparently a bit nervous about performing the Oscar-nominated song from "Country Strong," crossed paths with Jake Gyllenhaal, about 30 minutes before Sunday's show started. "Hey, I'm sitting right behind you," he said. "Oh good, I'll throw up on you then," she replied.'


At 5:07pm (still a long, long way to go): 'There's major mingling inside the theatre now. On one side, Colin Firth kisses Amy Adams on the cheek. In the centre, Hugh Jackman is shown to his front-row seat before bouncing away. On the other side, Jake Gyllenhaal greets Marisa Tomei and Hilary Swank. "We're sitting next to each other," Swank excitedly tell Gyllenhaal.' Lucky Hilary! There were some other familiar faces too.

The Oscars are looming. They're really looming. I'm not able to watch them myself due to a variety of facts - a) they're not on TV; b) LA has worse weather than England at the moment; c) some of us have got to go to work in the morning (when they're pretty much still on, UK time) and d) they're not on TV. Nevertheless, you can watch the red carpet streaming live here and hopefully you'll spot Jake Gyllenhaal in less time than it takes to say 'Is Jake wearing Ford?'



I'd like to ask for a moment's pause and solemnity here so that I can make offerings to the Oscar Gods and entreat them to see that justice is done - let me behold David Fincher with an Oscar! Let Michelle Williams win an Oscar! And may I never hear these three words again after tonight: 'The King's Speech'.

[Updated] Jake Gyllenhaal to present two Oscars with Amy Adams (and gets a haircut)

Yesterday (25 February) Jake Gyllenhaal was seen leaving a salon in LA. So, with the Oscars just a day away, Jake can now cross 'get a haircut' off his To Do List. We now know that Jake will be presenting two Oscars. According to Deadline, Jake and Amy Adams will 'present the Best Documentary Short Subject and Best Live Action Short Film Oscars' somewhere between Anne Hathaway's second and third costume change. I'm hoping to be livestreaming the red carpet for the Oscars here on WDW tomorrow night.

Jake Gyllenhaal being considered for The Bourne Legacy

The next Bourne movie will be a little different - it won't have Bourne in it. Deadline has reported that Tony Gilroy, the director and writer of The Bourne Legacy, is meeting with actors in LA this week to make the Big Casting Decision and among those being considered is Jake Gyllenhaal. This may help to explain Jake's recent meetings, haircut and shave - or not.


Here is the full list: 'Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch, Benjamin Walker.' The list will be cut quickly because several have availability issues - possibly not something that would hamper Jake's selection.

Jake has regularly spoken of his admiration for Matt Damon plus there is his friendship with Doug Liman, the director of the original The Bourne Identity. Jake undoubtedly has the look and talent to play a smart spy and, if he is still looking for a franchise to stamp his name on, this could be a worthy possibility.

Jake Gyllenhaal to present at the Oscars!

This emergency post comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter which has just revealed that Jake Gyllenhaal is to present at the Oscars this Sunday. While this is great news for everyone (who is able to watch the Oscars and not have had its nation's TV Oscars coverage abolished due to a state visit by a certain pontiff last September), it does mean that Jake cannot curl up on the sofa to watch it with a big bag of doritos.


So... which award do we want Jake to present?

[Updated] New clip and new Source Code trailer! Michelle Monaghan talks about Jake Gyllenhaal and Oscar memories

There is a new trailer for Source Code - I like it... a lot. Without giving much of the plot away, it introduces characters, an impossible, high-energy situation, drama and relationships. It comes courtesy of Moviefone.



While Jake Gyllenhaal continues to conduct business meetings across LA which - fingers, toes and eyelashes crossed - will result in a glut of future movies, Michelle Monaghan has been talking to Extra about Source Code. In what is our first proper look at Jake's new leading lady, Michelle tells us that it's 'a very emotional film' because it 'begs the audience to ask oneself what would you do or say in your last eight minutes'. I have quite a list...


As for Jake, Michelle tells us that Jake 'is such an amazing, amazing guy. He's such a pleasure to be around because he's one of the funniest people I've ever met and that's a side that I hadn't seen of him. And he's a real goofball! He really is! We had a really great time working together. It was a real pleasurable experience. And on top of that he's a phenomenal actor. He's probably one of the most supportive actors that I've ever had the opportunity to work with. And I can't say enough good things about him. He's so cute!! He is! He's really cute!'

I rather like Michelle! She definitely has good judgement...



Oscar Fever

Stars have been telling the Washington Examiner about their first experience of visiting the Oscars. I only managed to gatecrash the Night Before Party and walk on an empty hours-to-go red carpet and that set off the butterflies. And so imagine if you were actually there, at the centre of all that attention.


This is what Jake remembers: 'Jake Gyllenhaal was totally overwhelmed: "It's like this mind-blowingly intense situation. And, yet, at the same time, oddly normal, which makes it even more strange. I remember George Clooney shaking my hand at one point as I was walking to my seat, and not believing it. And I remember so many — a sea of famous people's faces, I remember that."



I am sure there will be others who will remember seeing Jake at the Oscars and similar events and getting every bit as much of a mind-blowing experience. Whatever we say about the Oscars and their 'mistakes', it is a very exciting time to be in LA.

Jake Gyllenhaal in LA 22 February and some Love And Other Drugs Blu-ray moments

Jake Gyllenhaal was seen out and about at the Four Seasons Hotel in LA today (22 February), sporting a look that no-one else can do quite as well as he can. Source.


My Love and Other Drugs Blu-Ray arrived today from the US, a week ahead of schedule. I'm delighted to report that Mr WDW loved it and that, while there is no commentary and the documentary features are short to say the least, there are three deleted scenes. I don't want to give the game away and so, just as a taster here are some very poor pictures that I took from these. It's interesting that these scenes contained more than one shot from the trailer, as you'll see below.








Among the brief documentaries is a discussion by Ed Zwick about his actors, including the 'utterly engaging and really quite delightful' Jake. He talks about a photograph he kept from the shoot - you can see it below. This was taken when the cameras stopped rolling in between takes and its affection and intimacy are genuine and real.


I'm crook at the moment with a bad neck so please forgive the awkward angle at which I wrote this post.

Never mind the Oscars - Jake Gyllenhaal is the Most Kissable Man

Never mind the Oscars, it's time to get down to the awards that really count. For today it was announced that Jake Gyllenhaal has been awarded the Most Kissable Man award. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists who clearly know a lot about smiles and, it would seem, also about kissing, put Jake above Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Denzel Washington, all three of whom are relatively kissable, just not as kissable as Jake Gyllenhaal.


Actually, seeing that picture above reminds me of the interview from which it was grabbed, back in Rendition days when Jake was in London and turned everyone to mush. Versions of this video no longer work across WDW and so here is a replacement:



I digress... back to the Most Kissable Man:







Then there was Emmy Rossum's famous audition for The Day After Tomorrow, during which she adopted the direct approach.




Anyone who has seen Love and Other Drugs wouldn't have failed to notice that there is a fair amount of kissing in it. I look forward to proper analysis on the arrival of my blu ray, which is currently in the post.

Prince of Persia on display

The 19th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design is taking place at the FIDM Museum and Gallery in LA, running from 8 February to 30 April. While it may present costumes from Inception, The King's Speech, The Kids Are All Right and many more but obviously what makes the exhibition are the costumes of Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton from The Prince of Persia. Here's a taster of what people will be able to see, from an earlier exhibition at the ArcLight.



Clearly, some costumes are more scene stealing than others while, much, much rarer, there are the very few occasions when a movie's clothes become iconic. Not just for representing a type of character but, in the rarest of occasions, individual characters. This is the finest example I can think of.



Jake's worn a fair few costumes over the past, cowboy, soldier, miner, and he's covered the full gamut of recent decades. I did a full run down of his filmatic disguises back in 2008, although now, of course we can add the prisoner of Brothers, the Persian medieval prince, the 1990s' drugs rep and airforce pilot..






Of course, the pressing point now, is what will Jake be wearing next?
