The Joker's countdown: two weeks to go - and a posthumous Oscar on the cards?

This time last year, Zodiac was finally out in our theatres and we had months to go before the next Oscar nominations, feeling that Zodiac would not be nominated despite the widespread critical acclaim for the film and its cast. Now, the buzz begins for the 2009 Academy Awards and, this time, it's possible that Brothers, with Jake Gyllenhaal, and The Dark Knight, with Heath Ledger and Maggie Gyllenhaal, might be among the nominees. There is even talk that Heath may now get that Oscar.

The Metro today reported: 'Heath Ledger could still win an Oscar after a film critic tipped the late actor to scoop the gong for his role as the Joker in the new Batman film, The Dark Knight. The Aussie, who died of a drugs overdose in January aged 28, is hailed as "mad-crazy-blazing brilliant" by Rolling Stone magazine's Peter Travers. He said: "If there's a movement to get him a posthumous Oscar, then sign me up."' Read the Rolling Stone article here for more superlatives for Heath.

This opinion, that a posthumous Oscar may be a possibility, is repeated in a set of ET video interviews recorded with each of the cast of The Dark Knight - with one exception. You can see a compilation video here. Christian Bale says of Heath's performance and how audiences will watch it: 'It's unlike any portrayal we've seen before. I think they will celebrate his talent and applaud him for that because he does do a phenomenal job.'

The video feature makes a point that this was the second time Heath acted with a Gyllenhaal, showing clips of Brokeback Mountain. You can see all of Maggie Gyllenhaal's interview here and in it she speaks about what it was like to see Heath on the screen as the Joker: 'I found it very, very difficult at first and then... He's so astonishing in the movie that I - I can only speak for myself - but I very quickly found myself watching the Joker. Maybe as a way of protecting myself but also because he's so good.'

The New York premiere of The Dark Knight is now just two weeks away - on 14 July - and the whole affair, as well as the film itself, appears to be dedicated to Heath and to fellow Aussie Conway Wickliffe, a special effects technician, who died during the making of the film. Heath's family is expected to attend. The premiere in London is a week later, on July 21.

A different FNIT?

Thanks to a poster at DC, here are a couple of stills from the television version of Brokeback Mountain that was shone on the Bravo channel at the weekend. Although much of the first tent scene was not shown - a view of a trembling tent was deemed sufficient - it included film of Jack unbuckling his belt shot from an angle not seen before. Intriguing indeed.

And finally

After yesterday's post, with its talk of Joe Namath and Jake's suitability to play a football star, today another player mentions Jake. Jason Peter, who has written his autobiography and is presumably known beyond British shores, when asked hypothetically which actor would play him in the movie said 'Jake Gyllenhaal' - because his wife said so. Sensible lady. Thanks to Nicole, here's a clipping of the Parade piece that featured the question about Jake.

Includes pictures from Parade, IHJ, Empire, The Dark Knight.

  1. I have been hearing amazing things about Heath and TDK. One review after another is claiming him Oscar worthy, etc. and the movie a masterpiece.

I know it will be heartbending to see him but as I have been watching the various clips online I have been sucked into the character and have been blow away watching him. Only wish Heath were here to receive all this praise. :(

Not to mention the whole superb cast who all look fantastic. Maggie's clips have been great. I already bought my tickets because they keep saying that it is being sold out around the country. Thanks for the clips, WDW, can't wait to watch them!

I also beyond thrilled to hear such good early buzz on Brothers from the early screenings.

Don't know who this person is but
This site has some good things to say:

Brothers - Directed By Jim Sheridan (In America, In the Name of the Father)
Starring: Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire

Mr. Sheridan's latest may prove yet another formidable film. Test screenings have already been raising brows and has begun to receive a tremendous amount of buzz. Brothers tells the tale of a man who consoles his older brother's wife after he has gone missing in Afghanistan. The stellar cast already makes this a shoe in, but will it be enough?

  2. Hi Get Real :D I've not been able to see any of the clips as I just think I'm going to be blown away by the whole thing, but I still can't wait for the experience. I can't believe it's now less than a month till we see it.

The early buzz about Brothers is just wonderful. I read that and hope we get more of the same.

Hope you're having a good sunny Monday - the tennis is becoming a little harrowing...

  3. Oh G*d, I can hardly wait for TDK. I'm going to buy tickets in advance so we don't miss out opening weekend. The Joker had me shaking in my boots from the trailer alone - he's incredible. Looking forward to seeing Maggie too.

I agree, it was so good to Christian Bale's comments about Heath. He does deserve a big kiss.

Good news about Brothers, I'm looking forward to that as well, the more I hear about it.

I'll have to keep my eye out and watch Brokeback on Bravo again - I did notice some scenes that looking slightly different. ;)

  4. What sad irony if Heath and Jake both get Oscar nominations!

  5. Hi there Bertie! Do look out for the Bravo version again and if you do see it, please describe what they've done to FNIT for us :D I haven't seen the trailer for TDK yet.

Hi Anon :) - that's some thought and the whole thing would just be so agonising.

  6. Bertie, I agree it is wonderful hearing Christian say such wonderful words about Heath. I don't want to watch BBM on regular tv, I don't want to see it butchered! But thank you for sharing those scenes of the tent that seem from a different angle.

Also had to comment on the mention of Jake in the JN bio next to the Eric Clapton mention. I have been a HUGE Clapton fan for years now, have admired his work, which has gotten me through some hard times, and respected his ability to cope with the tragic loss of his son. No words can express the heartbreak when that happened here in NYC. Anyway, sorry to be off topic but Jake and Eric together was pretty exciting to me. :P

  7. Also had to comment on the mention of Jake in the JN bio next to the Eric Clapton mention.

    Me too, GetReal!

I'll report back, WDW, on Bravo's Brokeback. I sure don't need any arm twisting to watch it again! The rockin' tent was a nice touch.

  8. OMG WDW! TY TY:)
In my last post to you, I forgot to mention the shots I'd never seen before of Jake in BBM, or the shaky tent scene.

I hope to see Wall-E when my son comes home... TY Paul for the positive review. I promised to wait and see it with him.

It's great reading about all Jake's projects. He won't have to play Gnarls Barkley's hit 'Crazy' any time soon, because he is busy busy busy.

Tickets are supposedly selling fast for TDK. I plan to purchase some this week. I think a few theaters have added a 3AM show in addition to the Midnight Friday screening.

  9. I'm like you, Get Real, I want to know what they did to BBM but I don't want to see it!

I am a big, big fan of Eric Clapton myself - with strange feelings about him also because George Harrison was one of the people I've admired the most in my whole life and they had some relationship! Fascinating in many ways. But real tragedy for Eric, just terrible. Always like to go off topic about my heroes :)

Thanks Bertie! A rockin' tent, the mind boggles...

Hi Sass! Someone has to tell me what this Wall-E is about - I'm so intrigued :D I hope you get your ticket ok.

  10. I'm glad Jake is getting Oscar buzz already.
I'm also glad Heath is getting positive reviews so far, but I wouldn't count on a nomination, his role is based on a comic book character.

Thanks for the great updates and links to the interviews WDW.

    Sandy

  11. Thanks, Bertie and WDW! I too love George Harrison and have been fascinated by the relationship Eric and he had. I don't know if I could accept my best friend writing a whole album of love songs for my wife! But they had an incredible bond and I know that Eric headed a wonderful concert at the Albert Hall when George passed. Dhani his son looks so much like George it is incredible. Eric and George are really heros to me too. I recommend Eric's bio that just came out about a year ago. Great read. As well as Patti Boyd's book which came out a little while before that.

Absolutely loved Wall-E! I highly recommend it like Paul (hope your mom had a lovely birthday!) and Bertie. Just the most sweet, cute and adorable thing you have seen. And I almost cried for Wall-E and Eve a few times. Who knew robot love could be so affecting, lol. And the special affects are truly awesome. Sass and WDW I say defintely check it out!

  12. Thanks Sandy :) It'll be interesting to see what happens when the awards season comes round that's for sure.

Having an agonising time here watching Wimbledon with Andy Murray making it as painful to watch as it possibly can be!

  13. a rocking tent? how verrry vulgah! oftimes IMO prudery results in vulgarity. (kinda joking kinda not)

I think TDK is gonna be like a shot in the heart for some, but maybe I should just speak for myself. Im thinking of Annie P's description of Ennis looking "heartshot" - Im sure H's performance is, indeed, electric, he has that capacity to be so. And there are the BBMt connections - Ennis' heartbreak that he could not have been there to protect Jack, etcetc. because the BBMT story is so universal, the actors of the story provoke alot of emotions in the viewers. Again, speaking for myself.

Im watching John From Cinncinatti, David Milch says he factors into his choice of actors the charisma from former roles they have played. I personally think this is a tawdry way to make a film -

My Im being judgemental dont know what's got into me except having to go cold turkey re: Jake. Wonder who's kissing him now, wonder who's showing him how - wonder who's looking into his eyes, telling lies.....etcetcetc.

Lovely to see interviews with cast and director of Dark Knight. I dont see how Brothers can miss, really.

Oscars mean nada zilch to me, after the BBMt snub.

boy I am in a naggy negative mood.
    apologies, my friends. :(

  14. That's amazing, Get Real. I received my degree some years back on the stage of the Royal Albert Hall on the very day Eric Clapton was playing on it and I was far more excited about that. Ive read Eric's book but not Patti's.

So is Wall-E the new Pixar thing with the little robot? (Finding Nemo is one of my all time favourite films :D). It's good that maybe next weekend they'll be something on at the pictures for a change. I'll definitely check it out and Kung Fu Panda (or Pooey Fooey Panda as Mr WDW calls it) is also out next weekend. There's just a little matter of the tenns...

  15. Hi Pia - posting at the same time - I hope you beat the blues soon *) Oscars mean little to me but I think Jake would like one and so I'd like him to get one. I think Heath's performance in TDK - of a genre I'd never normally watch - will be spellbinding.

  18. Hello my friends :)

I have got several more grey hairs watching this match... thanks Murray :\

  19. I'm glad everyone seems to love Wall-E, he's really something. I really enjoyed it, and I wasn't expecting to. There's something for children, and for adults, to enjoy. I'm liking this new trend of animated films for the entire family to enjoy. Animation has always been an amazing art form for me.

I agree Pia, overall - I think the film lost something by having it so dramatically edited, some of the power of their physical relationship. But, if more people get to see it, I suppose that's some small consolation, but it was not the same film. I wanted to see just how it would be presented on network TV, so that's why I watched. To have the second night in the tent edited really surprised me. You are right, many vulgarities perpetuated by humanity and censorship is but one of them. Where to begin.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's so cool about being on the stage to get your degree at the Albert Hall on the same day as Clapton! :D

Pia, sorry you are having a rough time. (((Pia))) Going cold turkey on Jake?!?!? I hope not, he is supposed to help chase the blues. ;)

  21. Just watched the videos, the cast just really respected Heath...wow.

Btw, WDW, I did not see the mention of Heath working with both Gyllenhaal's? It was just straight video of the cast talking about Heath. Would you know where the other video is? Thanks for the video challenged here. :P

  22. Thanks so much for those FNIT pics, WDW:) I still can't get my head round that beautiful film being butchered for TV - sacrilegeous is the only word for it. And if I lived in the US I wouldn't take kindly to a bunch of religious nuts deciding what people should be allowed to see, surely most people watching would be adults who are capable of deciding for themselves what they consider suitable viewing. And I thought Britain was supposed to be a nanny state! If their concern is kids might be watching, well it's up to the parents to control that. Out of interest, did they cut the scenes of Ennis fighting with the bloke in the truck, or Jack being attacked?

I've saved all the Heath/TDK clips for after I've seen the film. It will be such a cruel irony if both Jake and Heath are nominated for Oscars, although like (((Pia))) I can't take the Oscars seriously after the BBM rip off:(

Hope you're breathing more easily now after the tennis, WDW. Shame Nadal will obliterate Murray tomrrow;) *runs away ducking from rotten tomatoes*

  23. Hey get real thanks for hug! No its Jake's fault Im gone cold turkey, not my own. Havent seen hide nor hair of him for awhile altho there are reports, that's true, and I assume he is in London.

  25. fly-by comment again. I am dead busy at work these days, that's I am behind BBM slash - that's unheard of!

but thanks so much for the TDK and Brothers news. I would love to see Jake and Heath being in the same Award ceremony again. Oscars or others.

And also the unseen FNIT clips... never enough unseen footage, never enough.

    ReplyDelete
  26. To be honest, I missed the latter part of it, I think I missed the scene where Jack was being beaten. I'm going to have to watch it again. They didn't edit the fighting scene with the bloke in front of the Black and Blue Eagle, just dubbed some of the swearing. All of the initimate scenes drastically edited, with Ennis and Jack, and those with Ennis/Alma and Jack/Lureen. They left the reunion kiss intact, and I think for the most part the scene at the Siesta motel. Kept Ennis washing up with Jack peeling taters in the foreground (looked like it was airbrushed or something tho) and Jack washing laundry in the stream. The FNIT, what they did show of it, did look slightly different. All eff words dubbed, but I think they missed one! ;) I know that film by heart. I think they'll be showing it again.

  28. Hi there - I'm just about recovered from that tennis match but it's taken a few GnTs :D

Hi Bertie - I do think it's good that many more people will have got to see BBM but I hope some will be inspired to see the DVD. I always have to watch Jake's films when they're on TV. I want to watch the films knowing so many others are too. I heard about the editing of the 'horizontal kissing' in SNIT - unbelievable.

Sorry you can't see the video Get Real - I linked to the wrong one - this one should do it:

    tribute

Hey TL - we're pretty lucky over here with how things are censored and also we have channels without adverts. But the idea of chopping up BBM is not a pretty one.

Btw, I'm not talking to you now after that Nadal comment - he will be dust! Come on Murray! Is it tomorrow? I can't cope - shame (or a good thing) I'm at work.

I'm missing Jake, too, Pia. It really does feel like a case of so near so far. Just have to sit here and tap my feet.

Hey Winterbird, I've been missing you :D Hope you can catch up on the work soon - it was so great seeing you last weekend.

  29. Thanks Bertie :D

I updated the link, Get Real :D Thanks for the People link - I may well be wrong but that interview sounds familiar to me and I think it may be revisiting an interview Maggie did a short time ago with somebody else. I love what she says though :)

  30. Thanks Bertie:) So two guys beating the crap out of each other is fine, but two men showing love and tenderness towards each other is likely to bring about the end of Western civilization? Pathetic.
Sorry, I'm a bit grumpy today:(

WDW, I'm not sure actually if Nadal v Murray is tomorrow or Wed. I hope it's Wed, so Nadal will have a chance to recover from his injury. If Murray beats him in an even contest then fair enough, but Nadal doesn't deserve to lose through being injured:(

  33. Morning everyone - back at work - sob :(

Morning grumpy TL! I'll never understand tv and film censors. I wonder if they have a watershed on US TV after which films are left alone. The match with Nadal is on Wednesday, gives me a chance to calm down after last night's! Oh, and Murray can have a rest too...

Ola Monica :D Glad you like the pics. I'm really enjoying playing PoP too - not too good at it though, I keep falling off the walls onto spikes :( But a lot of fun.

Morning Get Real! You're right, that's just the kind of statement I love to hear repeated too :D

Have a good day everyone and I hope you all have some of this sunshine :)

  34. Moving post WDW...

Heath Ledger's Joker is really magnificent and he'd deserve an Oscar regardless of his tragic destiny and the genre of the movie he's in IMO. Or, at least, let's say he deserves consideration from the Academy for his wonderful work.
I truly admire the way all the TDK cast and Christian Bale in particular is handling this delicate situation. I wish them all all the best.

And Brothers can be indeed a formidable film. What I know so far is that Jake's part in the movie fits him perfectly, so my hopes remain high.

And yes, a nomination for both Jake and Heath when Heath won't be able to be there to eventually receive his award would be heartbreaking but glorious at the same time.

Have a great day WDW and everyone! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hey WDW,hi all. Thanks for this fabulous Heath/Joker post,WDW. I didn't have time to immerse myself in it and everyone's posts last night so saved it until today - another Tuesday,Bloody Tuesday - 23 weeks since Heath was taken from us :-(

I haven't been able to resist the trailers and stills in advance of TDK and even those short extracts make it obvious that Heath gives a remarkable performance, scary, animal, manic and yet somehow magnetically sexual too. I'm not surprised his colleagues/friends were in awe of his talent as well as loving him as a generous and charismatic person, with a sweet, old soul.

For me the Oscars were forever devalued by their politically correct, wholly regrettable and baseless decision to rob Heath,Jake and "Brokeback" as a whole of the Oscars which so obviously should have been theirs. That's not to say that I'm not desperate for both of them to receive recognition in terms of awards, subjective and controversial as the judging process might be.

What a bitter irony it would be if Jake and Heath were both nominated for Oscars next year for "Brothers" and "TDK" respectively. Have to admit,I would be horribly torn should that be the case but I'd have to come down on the side of wanting Heath to edge it,simply because there will be no other opportunity for him to receive an Oscar and I'm hoping that Jake is destined to have a glittering career with nominations, awards and Oscars a-plenty in the future.I'm pretty sure there's no one Jake would rather "lose" to either...

It has given me the shivers to wonder how Jake would cope with the situation if both he and Heath were nominated and he was awarded the Oscar instead of Heath. Not sure how he would handle an acceptance speech in those circumstances...but I'm getting ahead of myself and over-thinking as per usual. Excuse me while I slap myself around the face to get me thinking something like straight again.

Not that the thought of "Brokeback" being butchered to pander to the prudery prevalent in much of American society, it would seem, is likely to get me on an even keel once more (I'm with TL here, how come screening violence is ok,but showing the physical expression of love is beyond the pale???) - however,it would seem that the Bravo screening has brought to light a couple of screencaps from the FNIT taken from a different angle to any we have seen before. Fascinating and tantalising - to quote Winterbird, there's never enough unseen "Brokeback" footage, definitely never enough!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi Xenia! I have very high hopes about Brothers and I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Hey there Nadine :D Thanks for your thoughts on how you'd feel should it happen that both Jake and Heath are nominated - that's how I feel exactly. I also agree that although Bravo may have shown a rather chopped about BBM it is very intriguing that it's thrown up 'new footage' of a crucial scene.

  37. "Its Jake's fault Im gone cold turkey, not my own. Havent seen hide nor hair of him for awhile altho there are reports, that's true, and I assume he is in London." [Pia]

Last night I broke down and read "Us" magazine when I was in the supermarket. They had a cover article about J*** moving in with.... So, it's not as if Jake has disappeared, it's more like you'd need to lower your standards and look in more gossipy places. I know that's not likely, but I'm just saying. :-(

If Jake is filming "Prince of Persia" for the rest of the summer, there may not be much opportunity to even see pap pics of him for a couple months.

I didn't see "Brokeback Mountain" on TV, but I'm not surprised to hear that it was edited. People have probably seen the unexpurgated version of BBM on cable already. It's the networks that are more restrictive in what they think they can show. :-(
