Zodiac and Jake Gyllenhaal's wonderful portrayal of Robert Graysmith may reach another audience tonight as the film receives its premiere on satellite TV in the UK (9.40pm on Sky Premiere Movies to be precise). It's listed as a 4-star movie in the schedules I've seen, with TV Times saying: 'Based on a real story, this intelligent and stylish movie is spellbinding all the way through, with suspense expertly balanced against dark humour.'
Although this clashes with our annual TV showing of Wimbledon (the movie) as well as highlights of Wimbledon (the tennis) - not to mention at least three channels of Glastonbury coverage with or without Amy Winehouse - I hope as many people as possible do sit down to enjoy Zodiac with a big heap of strawberries and cream. As someone who does not have satellite TV, I'll settle for the DVD.
But this seems like a good excuse to repost a link to the Filmdetail audio interview with Jake. I could listen to that voice for hours. And talking of Jake on our small screens, I also hear that Brokeback Mountain was shown on the US Bravo channel last night and was heavily censored - I just don't think 'Jack Frederick Twist!' has quite the same ring to it.
Collectibles
The Antiques Roadshow is in town! Hertford College in Oxford has been taken over by cameras, experts and a long line of locals bearing grandfather clocks. I was surprised by the lineup of catering trucks outside the college and the huge amounts of coffee.
So, as I know less about antiques than I do about almost anything else and the oldest thing I own is my complete set of Upstairs Downstairs on DVD, I thought I'd take a look instead at one of Jake's mighty fine collections - The Nike.
Jake has far too many pairs for one post or one wardrobe but here are some of my favourites, with others dotted around this post. Some are just plain odd.
To sum up - It's hard to go wrong with a pair of Nike with green soles whereas you can have too much yellow swoosh. But so long as they're not crocs...
When Jake was discussing his thoughts about the real Robert Graysmith during the publicity for Zodiac, Jake remarked that Robert was a sweet guy but then he would become intense: '"Occasionally he would glance at things on me, and I'd think, what's he looking at? And he'd say things like, 'I like your shoes. Where did you get them? I had a pair of shoes like that once. What store did you get them from?'' Good man!
Afterthought
We were talking about food last night - for a change - and I came across this, which suggests that Jake has been known to bake 'chocolate zucchini bread' for holidays. What on earth is that and what does one do with it?
Includes pictures from IHJ and Just Jared.
Okay one topic at a time.
ReplyDeleteChoc. zuchinni bread, you just make zuchinni bread (you gotta do SOMETHING when the z. starts goin' big time) and add some cocoa or something.
My daddy used to make bread pudding with grapenuts and toss in a few handfulls of Nestles choc chips.
So I guess you can also make zuchinni bread and toss in some chocolate chips.
As for avocado slicing, I do it with a "serrated knife" (sorry, Jacobo) while the skin is still on. They come out lovely.
WDW I think you've not had a proper artichoke. They grow beautifully in fields near the ocean in northern CA.
Hope the weather is as sunny across the pond as it is here!
Hi Pia! It's beautiful here too - a gorgeous evening and it's even sunny at Glastonbury - can't be right :)
ReplyDeleteGotta say that Zucchinni (the vegetable that cannot be spelled) choc bread sounds flipping disgusting! I'll stick with my Irish soda bread. Thanks for the avocado tip - I'll try it out this evening.
I've got as close to an artichoke as I ever wish to, thanks though :D
Been a lovely day picking up tennis tips before the football tomorrow...
O I forgot to thank you for pix of JBG's beautiful legs, that come with the shoes.
ReplyDeleteAnd I just recalled that Jake's mom used to make carrot bread whenever she was in the midst of scriptwriting. Ive never cared for carrots nor zuchinni sweetbreads, it's an invention to deal with garden surplus, that came to be considered politically correct or something.
HOWEVER gee whiz I was right about the choc chips - and I agree it sounds as bad as grapenut pudding.
2 sm. zucchini (about 1/2 lb. total) or 2 c. grated
4 c. flour
1/2 c. cocoa
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 1/2 c. oil
3 eggs
1 1/2 c. milk
2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Butter 2 (8 x 4) loaf pans.
Grate zucchini. In a large bowl, combine flour, cocoa, sugar, baking soda and powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. In another bowl, combine zucchini except the chocolate chips. Stir into dry ingredients until just blended. Stir in chocolate chips.
Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake until a toothpick stuck in the center of the bread comes out clean, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Cool on rack 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely.
Great stuff Pia! I'll add that to the WDW Eats with Jake Cookbook.... BUT - it still sounds revolting :D
ReplyDeleteI'm watching a programme about a wine expert teaching a Top Gear presenter about wines and grapes as they travel through France. I'm feeling cultured after my sporty day. Drinking wine as it seems fitting.
Glad you liked the pictures of Jake's legs - they set the Nike off to perfection and vice versa.
I like Carrotcake but I fear Carrotbread is something altogether different.
Forgot to say that if Jake were to cook me Zucchini and Chocolate Bread, I would eat it - I'm polite like that :)
ReplyDeleteWDW from all accounts I believe that Jake is "polite like that", too. probably enthuses over treacle tarts and beans on toast.
ReplyDeleteMmmm Treacle tart - my all time fave pud :D
ReplyDeleteWe seem to be on our own tonight Pia, I'll share my bottle of wine with you if you fancy it :)
would fancy it as Ive finished my shiraz and that's it, for tonight, anyway.
ReplyDeleteHelp yourself to my Californian Merlot :D It's going very well with watching Amy Winehouse on the Glastonbury stage. I wish I had Sky - I'd be watching Zodiac. I love watching Jake's films when they're on TV.
ReplyDeleteBBM finally aired for the first time on TV yesterday!! I was up all night watching it! Of course I didn't like all the commercials..but my mom finally watched it with me and she loved it! I love all of Jake's Nike's by the way!
ReplyDeleteToo bad I don't have Sky Movies anymore:( I might watch the DVD instead now the Glasto highllights have finished.I was searching the interactive thingy looking for Leonard Cohen, then I found out he's playing tomorrow and I bet it'll clash with the football:( Here's hoping Nadal's victory today will inspire Cesc and Co to make it a Spanish double:D
ReplyDeleteI read about BBM being butchered for US TV, made me thankful I live in the UK. It was bad enough C4 had to interrupt it with ad breaks but at least they didn't edit any of the scenes or the dialogue. Why bother showing it if it's not shown in full, surely it doesn't make sense without the tent scenes? The mind boggles...
Anyway, nice Gyllennike pics, thank you for that - and for omitting the hideous yellow ones! I still shudder at the memory of them!
hello from Warwickshire. :D. I think I've had zucchini bread or something similar. Prefer carrot cake though. Hope everyone is having a good Saturday. xxx
ReplyDeleteHello lovelies - just about to watch Zodiac on tv - hubby loves it and is clamouring for Jake, thinks he did a great job.
ReplyDeleteI saw Gone Baby Gone today so with Zodiac and that it's all terribly cheerful ... :(
Hi Nicole! So glad to hear you watched BBM with your mum. I did that with mine not that long ago and it was a wonderful experience - she got it. Jake and Nike - what a mix :D I wonder what Jake does with the pairs he doesn't wear...
ReplyDeleteHey TL :D The US showing of BBM made me thankful about about that too, but at least it was shown, I suppose. I don't think I'd have been able to sit through it with scenes removed.
I didn't know Leonard Cohen's playing at the festival. I've been enjoying it today. Crowded House and other bands are playing at a festival just a couple of miles from my home tonight so I should just leave my window open.
Those yellow Nike - just vile but fortunately seldom seen. I watched Nadal's match. I'm torn with the footie tomorrow as I have links to Germany but my mum tells me to cheer for Spain :D
Hi Ruby Rubes! Glad you got there safe. You've eaten this Zucchini bread? I'm gonna wait til Jake makes it for me. Did yours have chocolate in it too? I've had a lovely relaxed and sunny Saturday. Hope you enjoy your weekend away xx
Hey Nouskie *) I'll be thinking of you watching Zodiac with hubby. Mr WDW enjoys it too and even pinched my Zodiac DVD to take with him when he works away from home - I had to buy another copy! I've not seen Gone Baby Gone... we were posting at the same time :D
ReplyDeleteHey WDW! I thought Crowded House split up years ago???!! I liked a lot of their stuff:)
ReplyDeleteYou should listen to your mum on the football front;) Vamos Espana!!!! (my keyboard won't do the squiggly thing on the n :()
I'm glad those awful yellow Nikes have never been seen again. Jake must have read my comments on them. Nice to know he still listens to me sometimes;)
Hey TL! Nope they're still going. I think they played at Glastonbury earlier today or yesterday as well. We have Wakestock festival here this weekend at Blenheim in Woodstock. It's a mix of music and waterskiing. I s'pose they could've called it a more sensible name, like Woodstock...
ReplyDeleteI'll be thinking of you each time Spain scores!
Jake does listen to you and that's why I'm still expecting the shirtless shaving scene in Brothers :D
Hiya
ReplyDeleteWith all the talk of Zodiac I may have to break out the DVD's again! Such a brilliant movie..
Nike Jake is kick ass. ;p And your last post on Chef Jake...*swoon* You always find rare and awesome Jake interviews, tidbits, etc...love it...thank you!
Btw, if you all haven't checked out the videos (found at DC eyelashes thread) of Chris Fischer who has show on food on a small cable network on MV. So nice to hear and see him in action. He sounds so much like Jake!!! You can so see why they are best friends. :D
Hope all of you are having a great Saturday. Was hot earlier and now we are having rain and thunderstorms. :/
Oh and reports of Jake being at the Mandela concert in London. No pics so don't know how true it is but I hope all the UKers can find out. :D
ReplyDeleteOmg don't get me started on Crowded House!. I love them. They got back together with a new drummer and did a tour recently . I saw them at Wembley arena a few months ago. I saw Neil Finn (with brother Tim) play The Royal Albert Hall a couple if years ago, just a day or so after Paul Hester died. blimey, was that an emotional gig, I think they cancelled much of their European tour after that.
ReplyDeleteThey have the most amazing rapport with the audience. It's incredible the atmosphere they create in some very large venues.
Sorry for the fan girlie gush, but The Finns and Crowded House are just my faves and amazing live. They make you wanna hug everyone in the room.
Hi Get Real! Glad you like the posts. I saw those Chris videos - what a great place to live and I love his voice too (he's also not a little hot...).
ReplyDeleteI saw the Mirror report about Jake and Reese being at the Mandela concert (or party on Wednesday) but I'm not so sure now. I think it may have been just an official party list as there's nothing else about it.
I've been looking for Jake in the Wimbledon royal box today, also to no avail :) I'm just keeping my eyes open. I don't think filming will have begun yet on PoP so Jake could well have been over here for a flying visit but I hope he's still around :D
Music and waterskiing? That's a new one to me!
ReplyDeleteGlad you have faith that Jake listens to me, but if that's the case how come I'm still waiting for him to..er...best not go there, just use your imagination;D
Hey Rubes! Posting at the same time... I know how much you love CH. Well, get over here as I've got Crowded House as my neighbours this weekend (along with Groove Armada and Mark Ronson etc). I heard that about the Guillemots too, that after one of their gigs you hug the person next to you, and it's true :D
ReplyDeleteIt's a new one to me too, Spooky Twin TL - you'd have thought it would lead to musicians getting electrocuted if they have to waterski at the same time... I'm afraid Jake's been busy with me :D
ReplyDeleteSo I was right about Crowded House splitting up then, I just didn't know they'd got back together. Thanks for letting us know, Ruby. "It's Only Natural" "Into Temptation" and "Instinct" are some of my favourite songs ever :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I might have guessed Jake was busy with you, WDW;) just send him this way when you've finished with him (I won't hold my breath:D)
I wouldn't, TL, I'm taking my time :D
ReplyDeleteWhere do I begin? So many interesting things in this post.
ReplyDeleteChocolate zucchini bread? We've got to get the recipe for that. I've made regular zucchini bread, but chocolate sounds heavenly. And I love artichokes as much as I love avocados, but Nadine made me blush! ;)
Jake's gorgeous legs - now there's a bit of alright on a Saturday afternoon.
Jack Frederick Twist - now we know his middle name and I like it!
Good to hear we'll soon be seeing Zodiac on TV soon. :)
WDW the news also mentioned Jake and whatshername (I know your posters do not like her mentioned) where at the concert.
ReplyDeleteTisha, I already said that Jake and Reese were listed as attendees at Nelson's birthday concert. And I gave Reese the respect of calling her by her name - I'd be grateful if you did the same.
ReplyDeleteHi Bertie! Check out Pia's recipe above - you may like it :D Jake's legs may be worth a post on their own :)
Good morning everyone! Another lovely day - I hope you all have a good Sunday and fit in at least one Jake movie :D
ReplyDeleteJake and Reese have been spotted shopping at Portbello Rd. in Notting hill yesterday so they are staying there.
ReplyDeleteSeems like the ball's in yr court, Brits, sure enuff! Go for it!
ReplyDelete(Do you have to be born in Gr B to be "knighted"? just wonderin')
Thanks anon. Here's the link if anyone is interested:
ReplyDeletesighting
Would have been good if there were some details - I love the idea of bumping into Jake down Portobello :)
Morning Pia! Anyone can be knighted or Damed but you can only use the Sir or Dame if you're a Brit. Sir Bob Geldof seems to be the exception :D
ReplyDeleteIf Jake is still in London, then the sun's come out for him - gonna be damn hot next week!
Jake as Imelda Marcos, with her many shoes.
ReplyDelete:)
Great post!
Thanks anon! Hee hee - I just want to know where and how Jake keeps 'em all! And how does he choose which pair he'll wear on a certain day?
ReplyDeleteSo much fun stuff going on in London, Antiques Road Show, all kinds of wonderful musicians (I love the Finns of Crowded House too), a celebration of the great Nelson Mandela's life, and of course, a couple of famous visitors (maybe)! I'm envious, enjoy! :)
ReplyDeleteI love the pic of Boo too,and Atti in the backseat. I will always admire Jake and Kirsten for adopting an animal from a shelter, and Atti is a beauty.
Enjoy your Sunday, all! :)
Hi Bertie! It is great around London at the moment and I'm glad it's hot and sunny for it all. It is odd, though, thinking Jake may be close! But I think I need to see some photos :D
ReplyDeleteAtti looks like a dog with character :D Hope you're having a good Sunday too.
