Prince of Persia: 'It's gonna look like no other place that you've ever seen before'

Some time ago, Prince of Persia director Mike Newell gave an interview about how he envisages Jake Gyllenhaal's new film, and the exotic world that this 'great big adventure love story' evokes for him. 'It's gonna look like no other place that you've ever seen before and it's going to be about a wild, strange time in history, when the world was full of mysteries and magicians and shamans.'

This is all backed up by a completely unsubstantiated but nonetheless tantalising comment left yesterday on IMDb: 'I have seen him as the prince and he is fantastic. The fight scenes with the Hassansins at the farmhouse on the rock are gonna be awesome!! And Jake is a real prince, you will see him with his makeup and long hair, his costume, he is awesome.' Sometimes a year feels longer than a year when you have Jake's prince at the end of it...

With thanks to T.

How on earth am I supposed to wait for a year???

    Thank you, WDW.

Music to my ears! I love times like this in history, I wish it was still full of mystery, magicians and shamans! Sigh. I guess you can only find that in books and movies nowadays, which is why I am a history and film buff and avid reader. ;)

I hope that we'll get to see a pic of Jake in Prince regalia soon! It is going to be a long wait. :)

  4. Thanks for the new post, WDW. He's very, very hopeful that his vision is captured and we're all very hopeful too. There is so much expectation from fans of Prince of Persia and fans of Jake - it just has to be spectacular.

You do realise guys that Jake will probably become even more popular and we'll have to share him with a much wider audience? Part of me wished he stayed with independent films, the other part is majorly psyched that he's getting this opportunity.

It's everything I wanted to see Jake in - fantasy/adventure. My other wish is that there is not a trace of TDAT in this new film. I also hope that parts of the set remain in Morrocco - just as they left some in New Zealand for LOTR. Jake is taking me all over the world - to see places and people I may have never otherwise met - I love that power he unconsciously exudes. I hope he continues to use it to do good things :D

  5. Hi everybody! Just got in from a second showing of TDK - too hot to do anything else! - and I thoroughly enjoyed it this second time. I appreciated Heath and Maggie much much more this time as I wasn't getting too bogged down in all our emotions for this wonderful bunch :D

Hi Zodiac :D I think we're going to have a bloody hard time waiting to be honest but I do think we could be lucky and get little bits of info throughout the year. Things came out of Pirates so fingers crossed.

I wanna see Jake in fight scenes with the Hassanins!

Hi there Ania :D I know, what are we going to be like in the theatres!! A pool of Jakefans!

Hey BK :D Oh I hope we get a full portrait of Jake as the Prince soon - just think, though, there'll be posters too. I love this mix of fantasy and history too.

Hi Sheba! We are going to have to share Jake with new PoP fans, I know, but it'll be so great to see him so widely adored :) He's going to be irresistible. I think this will be a mile away from TDAT, however much I love that film - it'll be different. It's interesting what you say about the Moroccan set. And also I wonder how long they'll be shooting exteriors there.

We are lucky to be following another film of Jake's right from the beginning. I remember when Jake was still filming Zodiac - seems a long time ago now.

I hope everyone's having a great Sunday and keeping cool :D The cinema had run out of vanilla icecream... :(

  6. I hope Jake's prince will have a sense of humor. I'd hate for PoP to take itself too seriously. Even TDK had some funny moments.

  7. Hi Anon :D I think there should be quite a few laughs in PoP - I'm looking forward to them. People laughed quite a bit during the DK showing I saw today - Heath showed some great comic timing.

  8. Things certainly seem to be hotting up on PoP front if the little snippets of information you've been posting here are anything to go by,WDW! Tantalising doesn't even come close!

I'm going to do my best not to get too excited about it though, because this time last year some of us were saying we couldn't believe we had to wait a year to see "TDK",never thinking how the world would have shifted on its axis by the time that film was released...God forbid that anything so seismic should happen during the wait for PoP.

Talking of TDK, some very observant soul on the DC forum pointed out that in the much-vaunted scene where the Joker wears a nurse's uniform,Heath was sporting an identity badge with the name "Matilda" on it :-/ I was obviously too blurry-eyed to spot that, but it warms my heart because that is going to mean so much to Heath's beloved little girl when she's old enough to appreciate the gesture.

  9. I thought this was a Jake blog?. What has TDK got to do with PoP?.

  10. Hey there Nadine :) I can't bring myself to think about what happened during the year's wait for TDK. I'm trusting our year's wait for PoP will be as different as it can be - but with another good film at the end of it.

I looked out for the name label today. Love these little touches.

And now normal service can be resumed: With a big huge thanks to my bro in law who has rebuilt my laptop making it as good as new, WDW is up and running again, folks!

  11. 'I thought this was a Jake blog?. What has TDK got to do with PoP?.'

A lot of us went to see TDK this weekend, Anon. We're also fans of Heath Ledger here, not to mention Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard. TDK also has Jake's sister in it, incidentally. There's been tons of stuff here about TDK, which I am forcing noone to read.

I think I gathered that, though not a fan of his other co-stars, will perhaps the one some of your posters would call Jakes "beard".

  13. I will not tolerate such rudeness here nor such disrespect towards Reese. I give her the respect of calling her by her name - you should do the same. As you're neither interested in PoP or TDK, please feel free to move along. Cheers.

  14. Im sorry but these idiot anons that keep peepin' up outta nowhere making unpleasant commentary - what IS the problem! please explain!

back to business - can I WAIT for PoP and all of the promised exotica? Non! Nonny nonny NON. I sm into the NOW - my beloved is busy doin' sexy swordsplay in Morocco and I think in the meantime that I'll invest my own version of exotica - hey! summer herbs and tomatoes and corn right outta the field -

    (go Jacobo!)

  15. Hey Pia! I know, they sound like a stuck record... Good to see you. Maybe you shoud be growing some ingredients for a North African dish. I love to think of Jake out there, transforming into the prince, among the mountains, in the desert, away from busy streets. I like it.

  23. Blimey Pia! Glad it's passing. I'm so scared of storms. Here everything is as still as a millpond and very muggy. Could really do with some a/c. Jake is hot - and he's not the only one tonight :D

  24. Hi WDW ! It's been a while since I don't visit here, and it's just as good as always. I watched The Dark Night this week an I was starting to wonder if you have seen, and then I found the entry you posted about it. I have to say I am amazed. All of the cast was incredible, but I couldn't belive, i just couldn't belive how strong and powerful and wonderful my Heathy's performance was. Tell you one thing, I'm so gonna watch it again and again even if it's painful because it's so good and it brings me a little closer to the talented actor he was. I'm just really glad you liked it :) As you said, those kinds of films take your words away. Lol, well I have said a ton, but he's the most inspiring thing for me. Im exicted about this Jake movie, I long to see him on the big screen again, Im sure he would make the most amazing prince. I hope you're ok, greeting and hugs!

  25. "unbeLIEable lightning and thunder todag! animals all a-tremble. ground shaking, houses all wondering if we're gonna all fall down - storm has moved away by now jeeeze!" [positively Pia]

Three guesses where the storm went after it left your area: I was driving West toward Worcester, an' this big ol' storm came with wind an' rain an' lightnin'. I turned North on Rte. 495, and had dinner at my parents' house, with thunder going off right over the house. Yikes!

The closest movie experience to that was the storm scene in "Hancock." For the record, I think "Hancock" is tied with "The dark Knight" for best film of the year so far.

  28. Good morning everyone! A very hot and sticky Monday in a hot and sticky office :(

Hey, Old Man River! Good to see you! I'm so glad you thought to come here after you'd seen TDK. The more I see TDK the more I enjoy Heath in it, and the sadder I am that there will be no more. But I'm bloody pleased we have the Joker. Do keep popping by when you can - always great to see you :D

Hey Paul and Pia, what a stormy time :( I do hope it's calmer for you tomorrow.

I've still not seen Hancock. I'm hoping it'll still be on this week.

Have a wonderful day everyone :)

  29. Hello WDW & all,
so glad you went to see TDK again, WDW.
I must confess, I did it too, last night. I simply couldn't resist!

This time I went prepared: I had read a few detailed synopsis on the internet to clarify a few plot points I had completely missed, and that helped a lot.

It never happened to me that I would go to see a "super-hero blockbuster" not even once, let alone twice (and more, I already know it!)... but this is special. It's not only because of Heath, but this film is really of another league altogether from any traditional super-hero action movie.

As I watched again the "close encounter" between the Maggie character and the Joker, I really thought it was truly frightening and full of sexual tension. It's inevitable that the Heath would upstage her in that sequence, but I think Maggie gives a credible performance: after all she's supposed to be the sensible / "normal" one in a "mad" world, much in the same vein as Gary Oldman's character, the "good cop" who's not afraid to show his humanity, doubts and fears, that is, a "hero" yes, but so much more...

Talking about Maggie and Heath: I don't know how much of it is true, but I remember many months ago reading a report from the Chicago set, that one evening the machine creating certain special effects had fallen over Maggie's skirt, which caught on fire and apparently Heath threw himself on top of her to put out the fire. When crew members arrived to help, Maggie told them she was fine and apparently she thanked Heath with a peck on the cheek, and he said something like he'd gotten a better kiss from her brother!...

And the scenes where he wears the nurse uniform!?? Oh my!... I couldn't tear my eyes off the screen!... I didn't notice the badge with Matilda's name, but I'll keep a closer look next time...

    Cheers,
    Paola

  30. Hi Paola :D I remember that as well about Heath and Maggie's skirt and the fire. Heath very much there inside the Joker. The scene between Heath and Maggie has to be my favourite in the entire film. I did enjoy it even more the second time but I think I still missed a lot. Like you, it's possible I may never have seen this film if it had not been for Heath and Maggie but now I also appreciate Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart's parts in it too.

    Hope you're having a good day :D

Can people write **** SPOILERS **** above anything which might possibly be construed as a spoiler.

Sorry, Anon - So glad you love the blog!

  36. No problem, WDW! I'll be more careful. It's the kind of film you definitely do not want to have spoiled for you. :)

  37. Thanks BK! I was so glad that Ruby went to see the film yesterday so that when I see her this week I don't have to worry about wearing a gag! It's difficult as it's a film with so much going on.

  38. Are we not dressing up this time then? ;-) We did get a few funny looks last time...... :D

  39. You can dress up if you like Rubes :D I think you need to start thinking about your PoP costume...

I've spent an hour downloading my Jake photos - who'd have thought I had so much Jake on my little computer :)
