After the emotion comes celebration - Jake and Reese at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party

After the heady emotion of triumph and disappointment comes the time for congratulation and commiseration, accompanied by a glass of something sparkly and the flash of camera bulbs - the Vanity Fair party. Cancelled last year, the party re-emerged in 2009 at the Sunset Tower and we were given the always welcome treat of Jake Gyllenhaal in a tux.

Reese was one of the surprise presenters at the Oscars and, after the ceremony, she and Jake did what we all like to do at a party (second only to drinking cocktails and dancing to Abba)...

... they mingled.

This one slipped in... I suddenly feel tripdation for the Nailed red carpet (should we get one, of course).

Includes pictures from Popsugar and here.

  1. Penelope Cruz looks good enough to eat :) well, I think that arm around her waist helps too :P

What's the point of VF party again? is it some kind of charity? Or just a elaborate post-oscar party to get tipsy?

  2. Welcome home Winterbird! Penelope looks lovely! How I loved her performance in Elegy. I think the point of the VF party is for Jake to look hot in a tux... No?

  3. Yeah, that's what I thought.
What about that weird Jessica's dress? Sheba was so right!

Hot swimmingpool day at Southern Brazil. ;)

  4. Hey Monica O! Ooh, luck you with that summer sun. Relatively warm here - I went out today without a coat!! - but I would love some proper sun... Jessica's dress is flippin horrible, and she is so beautiful. I need an explanation!

  5. YAY FOR HEATH! I was so excited when I heard!

YAY FOR JAKE AND REESE TOGETHER!

  6. Hi Bandgeek! You sound so excited!! I love that :D It's been a good day!

My word is brave... That will be Heath's performance, then.

  7. Is Reese wearing cling film under her dress, or what is that see-through think near her armpit?? :-/

  8. Hi Anna! I was trying to work out how Reese's dress is constructed and why it needs that tape/see through stuff. I love the blue of it, I dont think the black bits were necessary, but so much better than some of the dresses tonight.

I adore Jen Aniston but her dress was the biggest disappointment for me tonight dresswise.

    How these dress things matter!

  9. Well... We're never going to be able to wear them ourselves, are we? ;-)

  10. I know, Anna. But I may be a hoodie, Nike girl but deep down it would be lovely to try out an Oscar frock!

  12. Hi there Get Real! These are lovely pictures. I wish we could all have been there. Work was such a letdown today after all of this :D

  13. Jake looks so good in that tux. It's great to see himself and Reese looking really happy in these pictures.

Just watching the Oscar highlights at the moment.

Second time today I've shed a tear or two seeing Heath's family accept the award. I'm happy but really sad aswell that he wasn't there to accept the award and enjoy all the celebration and acknowledgement.

Reese was just on it. She was so funny and I love her dress. She normally wears darker colours so the splashes of blue (at least I think its blue) were lovely. I have to say I thought Anne Hathaway looked stunning aswell. I had seen a picture of Jessica Biel earlier which didn't show the end of her dress and I thought it looked alright. I now understand what everyone meant. All I can say is what was she thinking.

Work was such a let down today after all the excitement. It would be great to have been there. Maybe we could all go as fashion correspondents:)

  14. Jake looks beautiful in those pictures. I hope he doesn't feel a bit intimidated surrounded by so many people who have won Oscars. Maybe a BAFTA counts just as much? I hope so!

I am really proud of Anne Hathaway for earning an Oscar nomination. And Penelope Cruz richly deserved her award. I've loved her in her other movies.

  15. Paul, I would imagine that Jake would feel good that he already has an Oscar nomination at his young age. No small thing, imo. :)

  16. Good morning! I am still not over these pics! He looks soooo gorgeous!!

And it's a strange feeling - somehow I feel like set back in time... Is it because of where those pics were taken? Because he looks so very very young? Weird...
It would have been wonderful to see also pics of him with Anne! :)

I took a closer look at Reeses cling film, LOL! Looks like some kind of nylon fabric - maybe going around her neck? - to keep the dress in place? Hm, maybe that's why those black things are there? To cover that little trick up?
Damn, I never thought that I would investigate the function of some Oscars gown... LOL, Anna, you made me do it!! :D :D

Now, back to the important things in life: Looking at sweet, beautiful, flirty Jake!
We need to keep an eye on those ladies there, though! They are getting a bit too close and personal to Jake for my taste! :D :D

    Have a good day everyone!!

  17. Wow, what a good nights sleep can do for a girl.

Jake looks fabulous and oh, so young, classy, smooth and sociable. In fact, he and Reese look comfortable together. That VF party could have been a train wreck but everyone was cool. Must say Jen and John looked great together, really easy and unforced. She handled herself with such grace during the ceremony with a little smile towards Brad and Angie while presenting and they reciprocated.

Jessica Biele is beautiful and it seems on the inside too, but not even that beauty could save that dress... however, she redeemed herself at the vanity fair party. Take a look at this:

I do like the idea of the Vanity Fair 'backslapping' party because expecially in this economic time, the film industry will become really integral to a lot of people's lives again. During the depression in the 30's, people turned to the movies for entertainment, inspiration and in some cases guidance instead of leaping off tall buildings.

I hope that it can do the same and inspire us as young people to aim higher, and us as older people to soul search and do better.

  18. Morning everyone. :)

What can I say after all these wonderful comments?
    Not much I'm afraid...

Jake looked splendid, and even though I'm not too keen on Reese's dress I reckon she looked glowing and who wouldn't, with such man by her side. :)

And yes, seems like time is turning back, gorgeous flirty young Jake did the trick!

    Have a good day. :)

  19. Morning everyone! What an amazing day yesterday - left me worn out and I had to have an early night. No stamina!

Hi Carol! I definitely think we should all get an invite. I would like to have seen more of the frocks. Anne looked gorgeous just as she always does. I love her smile. I do like the blue of Reese's dress. She was on the news here really briefly but not saying anything.

Hi Paul :D Anne did just great! I doubt Jake would be intimidated, especially as a nominee himself. He's among his peers. It must be great to be able to congratulate the winners in person. And give them a hug.

    Morning Get Real!

Hey Uli :D He just looks delicious. Pics with Anne would have been fabulous. I hope they had the chance for a chat though. I think that part of Reese's dress must be to hold it up. It always amazes me how some of these dresses are constructed. Jake just looks so great in that tux. Beautiful, flirty Jake indeed :D

Hey Sheba - glad you've receovered! Oh, that's good to hear about Jen and Brad exchanging smiles. VF had the potential to have a whole load of embarrassments but I suppose everyone was prepared! Jessica is such a beauty.

I agree about the role of the movie industry during a depression/recession. Speaking for myself, I want to see glamour and I want escapist movies.

Hey Xenia! I know, no wonder Reese was all smiles :D 'Gorgeous flirty young Jake' - sigh...

    Have a good

  20. All Jessica Beil is missing is some industrial gloves and a huge hood. She looks like a worker from a nuclear plant...or something.

Jake looks so delicious...and so young. He could easily pass for 20 in these pictures. They could be going to Prom.

  21. Each year, it was a long established tradition in Hollywood for the legendary superagent, Swifty Lazar, to host a very exclusive Oscar party. It was also a viewing party for people who weren't participating in the Oscars that year.

If you were invited to Swifty's party it was a command performance. You had to show up. If you were not invited to Swifty's you begged, borrowed, or stole, or threatened great bodily harm to get invited, or you checked into a hospital, or went to Anarctica to scout locations around Oscar time. :)

After Swifty died, (a very old man,) Vanity Fair magazine thought it would be a good idea to continue the tradition. So they did.

  22. Hi there Anon :D Hmm, yes, industrial gloves would've set it up a treat. Jake looks adorable :) I'm still sighing over these pictures.

Thanks so much for the background, Metizzl - That's fascinating! Swifty sounds like quite a chap (I had a chuckle at the face-saving Antarctica location scouting :D) Thanks for commenting!

  23. "During the depression in the 30's, people turned to the movies for entertainment, inspiration and in some cases guidance instead of leaping off tall buildings." [Sheba]

With the new portable viewers (which Jake mentioned at the Oscars in 2006), you can watch films while you're falling off tall buildings. Not that this is recommended. ;-)

  24. I just wanted to add that Swifty was not a "backslapper" and there was NO MINGLING at his parties.
There were two rooms. A-listers and VIPS, and totally important people were in one room. B-listers, and favored up-and-comers were in another room.

People could not even stand around much less mingle. They all had to sit at their tables and watch one of several TV sets Swifty provided to watch the Oscars. They say he "patrolled" his party like a dictator. LOL!

Vanity Fair's is way more fun. Invitations are still almost impossible to get, but it's still so big, they schedule certain waves of celebrities to arrive and depart at certain times.

If you Google Swifty Lazar's Oscar Party there's a fascinating piece in Vanity Fair online.

  25. Hi Paul! OMG - definitely not recommended :DD

Metizzl - speaking as someone who tried to gatecrash the Night Before party last year, this is absolutely fascinating. I did what you suggested and read that article. I love this idea of regimenting celebrities to arrive at a certain time - which they don't do the rest of the year - and them pinching the goodies So while they may be extraordinary and beautiful people, at the Vanity Fair party they cancel one out (as Jake mentioned about celebrity parties on TRL). Really interesting, thanks so much - my imagination's been caught, I can feel a post coming on...

OT but I just saw Hugh Jackman's opening number for the Oscars and I really enjoyed it - and wasn't Anne amazing?!

You mean they tell them when to leave??! ...And I wondered, is there any dancing at the VF party? I doesn't seem like it.

  27. from the pictures it looked like first they were waiting in a line outside to get inside then were waiting in a room and then walked in to the room where the party was held so yea i guess its was all very organize affair both jake and reese looked gorgeous and happy

  28. All this talk about the VF party reminds me of Toby Young's book 'How to lose friends and alienate people'. I haven't seen the movie version with Simon Pegg and Kirsten so not sure how it measures up against the book.

He describes in detail how the party is organised with military precision. He also has some really funny stories about mingling with the stars and working at VF magazine in New York. Well worth a read.

  29. Hey Sheba - having read around for the post tonight it looks like they gave up on the dancing some years back :D

Hi Anon! A very organised queue of A-listers - what a sight :) Oh yes for the gorgeous and happy.

Hi Carol :D I've not seen that film yet either, but I'd like too. I'd also like to go to the party - sigh...
