It's an epic! Empire's Prince of Persia (with snood)

At last the day has come - the day when finally we get to see Jake Gyllenhaal in a snood! I knew it was just a matter of time...

Today, Empire magazine has hit the shelves, revealing secrets from the mysterious ancient city of Alamut and new words from the 'Indiewood's King of Quirk', Jake Gyllenhaal, who reveals that he has indeed played the original playstation game. Hopefully he's better at it than me. 'To see how the character moves was important... But what's so nice is that you have an opportunity to create a whole different character. In a lot of respects, I think we're separating ourselves from the game, in that this is a legitimate epic movie! And it's not what you'd expect of a typical video-game adaptation. It's an unlikely group of people to be making this story in a lot of ways, which is why I was so intrigued by it. I wanted to know why Mike Newell was so interested in this, and when he told me, it was fascinating.'

And then there's the running up walls: 'There's a lot of acrobatics - running up walls and jumping on things. It requires muscularity, but a lot of aerobic ability too. After this is over, I plan to get fat!' The article gives some tantalising glimpses of the exotic sets we might expect in the film - 'glittering minarets' and 'murky, cavernous dungeons'. I cannot wait for more. Click on the scans below and they shall be bigger. Still no ostriches... or camels...

  1. The snook is kind of funny! Especially when the princess is not wearing one! :P

I don't understand why there are still people complaining about casting a white (hot) man to play a Persian. Haven't they watched "Gandhi"? And the prince in the videogame doesn't even look Persian either. :)

gotta stop by the shop later today! :)

  2. Hi Winterbird! It's a very odd bit of headware indeed... I love seeing Jake carrying the torch. I want to see him running around and jumping on things. The cavernous dungeons sound a bit spooky...

I know, it's ridiculous. There were plenty of dark haired, blue-eyed Persians then thanks to Alexander and his armies and the Romans.

Do buy it! And Borders here has the Entertainment Weekly issue with the PoP page now.

  3. WOW...promotion is getting into gear now...I like it. :)

I am with you Winterbird and WDW, the complaining about Jake's casting is ridiculous. He looks just like the picture of the Prince that they show in Empire. So what is with all the bitching and whining. I could understand if he was playing a real life person or a serious period piece, but this is based on a video game. And as WDW pointed out "there were plenty of dark haired, blue-eyed Persians then thanks to Alexander and his armies and the Romans."

  4. I like it too, Get Real :D It's also just like how some people are saying they can't see Jake all buffed up for an action role - they should all be made to watch Jarhead...

  5. Hum... Am I reading this right?!?!? "Sex!Sand!Scimitars!" on the third page? Not that I'm complaining but that doesn't seem like a Disney movie! :DDD I want to buy tickets now!! :D

Wohoo, that bigger version of a wet Dastan is awsome! ***fans herself*** I might not get any work done for the rest of the day, thank you WDW! :D

I hope everyone is having a good day!

  6. Hi Olympia! Sex, sand, scimitars sounds spot on for me too - and I like the order... :P I've been enjoying the larger Wet Jake too! Just what we need!

The sun's come out, can hardly believe it... I hope everyone's having a good day! Is it Friday yet?

  7. There are people out there who maybe have only seen one of Jake's movies or maybe two and for them they think he's still Donnie Darko. They might not even know he was in "Jarhead". But if they complain it just shows they don't know what they're talking about.

  8. WDW was talking about the vicinity in geography and time with the Romans. There is one other interesting pictoral connection with the Romans; the torch in the hands of Prince Dastan. It is distictivly Roman, an insignia carried only to point out a leader. A "fasces", a bundle of rods or twig hold together in just the way on the picture. It can for instance be seen in the US congress, in the House of Senate on both sides of the Speaker.

  9. Hi 18:42 :) And they really don't know what they're missing. Hopefully PoP will make people investigate some of the earlier films.

Hey 19:59 - thanks for that :D The torch certainly does look Roman and it is similar to the Roman fasces, without the axes, of course. They're also on the Lincoln Memorial. I'm going to be interested seeing how the movie combines all these elements of a game, early medieval imagery, Arabian Knights fantasy, and Parkour - and Jake! I'll also be interested to see if Tamina has much to do in her role rather than follow the Prince around.

The costumes are fascinating - very similar to the game and with some historical touches :) Thanks for commenting!

  10. Need:
    a) Dastan (obviously)
    b) Horse (with fetlocks - love fetlocks)
    c) camel with sense of humour
    d) ostrich ditto
    e) a Snoody!

A PoP Snoody would be the perfect PoP/Jake(Donnie) audience cross-lead marketing spin off. I want one now! (After the horse, and the camel and...isn't this where I came in?)

    *spins in circles of delight*

  11. Yeay, Spinning TDizzy! The snood is back!! I'll have your list too - although ostrich and camel storage may prove tricky. No such problem for Dastan... I thought of DDarko too when I saw the snood :) So much potential for PoP goodies. No wonder we're spinning!

  12. I'm loving Tamina's costume and hair. How could Dastan resist? I think it will be interesting to see how they interact. This hoodie scene reminds me of the scene from the videogame where he's wearing a cape/or hood. Sigh. Love a mysterious man. But, these pics are no match for the wet escape over the balcony! :)

I loved your post of yesterday, WDW, with the BBM shirts, and hearing about Jake's involvement with teaching children the value of organic gardening/farming. :)

  13. I wonder if he finished the game. Something tells me he didn't. Movie stars have other things to do.

Cause I DID, Jake. I win, you suck:D

    Yay for me!

    Hi WDW!:)

  14. Hey WDW, thank you so much for the scans.I posted them at ONTD btw,of course crediting you as the source.jsyk.

    Thanks again. :)

Oh and wonderful blog.Best there's around about Jake.

  15. GUH! Lovin' Empire right now! I will have to find out how fast the Borders and/or Barnes and Noble in my area will have it. I've been able to find it easy enough when I've wanted it but not usually the day it comes out. I probably should inform the information desk person to be prepared for my daily phone calls...LOL!

Oh the more I see of PoP Jake the more I love it! How many months do we have to wait? Thankfully lots and lots of pics, magazine coverage, videos (I'm sure) and toys to come to keep us occupied while we wait. Oh and Brothers...can't forget Brothers! I cannot wait for that movie. Only 125 days to go!!!

And I second this wholeheartedly: "Oh and wonderful blog. Best there's around about Jake" Ain't that the truth!!

    :-) :-) :-)

  16. Yipee the publicity machine for this movie has well and truly started. It's great seeing the pictures full size at last. I even got some of my work colleagues interested at lunchtime when they saw the pictures. It's not only the twelve year old boys who will be interested in this movie:) I get the feeling Sex and the City 2 is going to have a bit of competition next May!!

Gemma looks stunning in the pictures. I can't wait to see what the chemistry between the the two of them will be like.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Believe me, the only Sex and The City I'm interested in is in a medieval Persian City in May 2010. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi there 23:00 :D I'm loving the look of Gemma here. I'd like to get a better look at her costume. Yep, nothing beats the wet escape!

Thanks so much for letting me know you enjoyed yesterday's post :)

Yo Zodiac! Good to see you and that fine avatar of yours :DD How are you doing?I couldn't believe how fast you finished the game, considering I only got about a third of the way through with the prince being killed off at every hurdle - I never could work out how to use the sands of time. I'm sure Jake'll have done better than me. I wonder if he cheated and looked for an online walkthrough - as I may have done. Hi! xx

Thanks so much 23:29! What a nice thing to say :) I'm glad you enjoyed the scans and put them to good use.

I hope everyone has a good night :)

  19. BBMISwear :-) posting at the same time. I'll make sure you get an Empire if you can't find one.

The wait will soon pass I think - and there's Brothers as you say - although this has yet to have a UK release date. I'm kinda hoping that's because it'll get a premiere at the London Film Festival but that's a good healthy bit of wishful thinking for you :D Thank you :-)

Hi Carol! The pictures look even better full size - there's more detail on the horse pic for instance. I've been showing them off too. I'm looking forward to seeing the chemistry too - and hearing the voices!

    Definitely, Anon :D

  20. lol i spoke too soon.the post was rejected.harshly.
    oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi there Anon :) What do you mean? What was rejected?

    ReplyDelete
  22. the ONTD post.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh, I see.. well, I suppose everyone's entitled to an opinion (even if it's wrong). Fortunately, I'm glad to see much of the buzz on the net is pretty positive. For those who can get past Jake not actually being Persian or medieval.

  24. Always thought of a snood as something for the back of the head..held hair in place or in a bun.
That just looks like a hood to me. But it could be that's what it's called in one place and called something different in another.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anon 0:20, I realise now that I probably misunderstood you and that the administrators of ONTD rejected the post (and not commenters). It's a shame when Jake's movie career is ridiculed. I'm sorry they were harsh to you.

Hi 1:07! Ahh, the snood is a strange beast. In Britain it's just like the thing Jake is wearing and we all had them in the 1980s. Well, maybe not all... I see to remember Howard Jones and Nik Kershaw were responsible - anyone else remember them?

Have a great day everyone - Friday!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I see to remember Howard Jones and Nik Kershaw were responsible

Ha! next you'll bring up Kajagoogoo and I'll have to expose my age! :PP I don't remember Nik Kershaw wearing snood, but he had pretty bad trousers. lol.

it's a video-game adaptation, I don't think historical accuracy is what they are striving for... it's more important to look grand and epic and yeah, HOT!

    Morning!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Too shy shy Hush hush, eye to eye

    Hi Winterbird :DD

Whenever possible, I try to avoid bringing up Kajagoogoo. Oh Kershaw's balloon trousers... ugh.

    Yep HOT!

  28. LOL, I have noooooooo idea what you are talking about... Never heard of the people you mention... Must have been way before my time *whistles innocently*

Hi! Thanks a lot for the scans, WDW! Especially because we have now embiggenable wet Jake! (and dumb me realised this only later...)

In the snood pic he has those special rings under his eyes - he sometimes has them in real life pics, too... I always think he must be so tired and exhausted then... I was surprised to see him looking like that in a movie pic - not hidden by the make up for the role.

I like the straps around his arm... ;D

    ReplyDelete
  29. Uli! Playing the innocent there with Ukelele Jake :D

My pleasure with the scans :) And the pics are great when you click on them - much more detail and - in the wet one - more drips :P I noticed the rings under his eyes in the snood pic. This could be a Jake in Peril situation... I wonder what they're up to.

    I hope everyone's having a good day - no rain today - amazing :D

  30. Thanks for the scan, WDW. I am SO looking forward to the minarets and the caverns and dungeons. But I'm also hoping for the baths. After all the wall-climbing, running around in the desert, and leaping off minarets, Dastan will surely feel the need to bathe his weary limbs. I'm a huge fan of the wet leather look, but honestly, no leather would be even better.

  31. Thirty replies to your post, WDW, and not a single one has commented on jake's commentnthat he'd like to get fat after filming is finished for PoP? What would fat Jake look like?

    ReplyDelete
  32. The hunt is on for Empire here in the states...my local Borders told me within a couple of weeks...but I think she doesn't know what she's talking about and it will be here next week. If I miss it completely you may have to come to the states and hand deliver me a copy WDW! :-)

P.S. I don't know if it's possible if Jake could even get fat. Could he?! Can't even picture it (thankfully)!

We got your rain here today, WDW, and will be quite heavy into the night and over night...YUK!

Have a good rest of your Friday!

    xoxo

  33. I'm guessing that Jake was joking with his "fat" comment. Many (perhaps most) people can get fat, and I would guess that Jake would be one of them. Some formerly thin actors (Orson Welles, Ann Sothern, Ryan O'Neil) became quite fat in later life, and had to reinvent themselves as actors or retire from show business. William Shatner and Andy Griffith got fat, and kept right on going as actors.
Jake could too, if he wanted to.
But I wouldn't expect to see extra pounds on him this side of his mid-forties. Relax, everybody. :-)

  34. Hi there everyone! I'm ready for a weekend :)

My pleasure Anon :D I think fountains would be essential to the plot. How could they be otherwise with the Prince dressed like that :P

Hi Paul! I'm hoping that if I didn't mention it, it wouldn't happen! I can't see Jake getting fat. He loves his food, I like that, and sometimes he looks adorably cuddly, but with all that exercise... Please don't get fat, Jake!

Hey BBMISwear :-) I'm sure that could be arranged :D I hope that rain clears off - it's been quite a pleasant day. It's supposed to be nice for at least another 40 minutes...

Glad to hear it, Paul! (Please, Jake, don't be like Willia Shatner...)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think I have needlessly scared people about Jake's future weight. Sorry! The only one who is going to be like William Shatner is....William Shatner, and they didn't make more than one of him.

Jake is almost certain to remain thin, okay?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Phew, I'm relieved to hear William Shatner will remain unique!
