Jake Gyllenhaal on Prince of Persia: 'This is the beginning of us all!' (Empire May Edition - fabulous)

It's Empire Day! The May edition has just arrived in my letter box, sandwiched between yet another pizza delivery flyer and my Sherlock Holmes DVD. Robert Downey Jr has had to wait, however, because there in technicolour print is a six-page feature on our favourite Prince 'You can call me Jake' Dastan. And there are new pictures of Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton along with the assurance that while Jake has stuntmen doubles (you can see one of them in one of these pictures holding Jake up), the parkour is all Jake.

You can embiggen these pages with a click to read it all for yourself and it's full of treats and not a little humour, plus some more info about Mike Newell - even Jerry Bruckheimer, it is revealed, speaks of his director in hushed tones.

Jake, we learn, is 'entirely comfortable as a rope-swinging swashbuckler' and is adept at exploding flaming oil on enemy troops. Mike Newell also reveals Prince of Persia's secret weapon: 'It actually has a broader appeal than you would expect... Jake. All the girls like Jake.' This is indeed as true as night following day, as 2+2 equalling 4 and artichokes being inedible. Mike goes on about Jake and Gemma: 'You have a kind of traditional star power from these two people who weren't stars when the movie started. With both of these guys we took considerable risks. There is a lot of money riding on their heads. And the audience likes them, which is great. It means I did my job.'

Jake and Gemma's characters get cosy in tents one imagines: 'The relationship's destiny is, naturally, a foregone, smoochy conclusion, but there's chemistry here. And comedy.' In Jake's words: 'Comedy is really what I enjoy the most... And it's what I find hardest. earnest is fucking easy. Finding the comedy in a situation is always the hardest thing, and I think as an actor you should try and find the hardest thing.'

'We have this kind of banter anyway, as Jake and Gemma... So that kind of transfers to the characters. There's a lot of witty remarks, cutting each other down...' Says Gemma. 'And also, when we need to be romantic...'

As for the 'Is it really Persia?' thing (it does, after all, say a lot more about video games than it does about history and geography), Gemma says: 'But it's completely detached from reality. It's a completely fictional world.' And Jake: 'It's not necessarily one culture... I think that's what so wonderful about it. That's actually what Mike said to me from the very beginning: this is all different cultures. This is the beginning of us all!'

Interestingly, the feature says that Prince of Persia: Sands of Time must have a sequel because it has a colon in the title. This is even more reliable than having 1 or I in the title.

Meanwhile back in the real world of moviemaking in Montreal, Jake was seen out about in the city on Saturday (narrowly avoiding BBMISwear and Ted who spent the weekend in Montreal wine tasting) with Atticus. You'll note there's no Atticus in the picture below...

... this is because Atti is taking a comfort break in order to let Jake have a little time to himself to whistle and pace for the cameras. Here's a different view.

  1. Evening everyone! Sorry for the delay in posting - this was caused by having to contort myself under my desk in order to reach my scanner. I really need a new system...

I hope everyone's had a good day and that you're so far managing to avoid ctching my cold :D I love this Empire article! It should be in the shops on Thursday.

  2. WDW it's okay to show the whole pic. I'm very proud of my fine looking ass!

  3. Hi there Atticus! And so you should be :D You'll find more pics of your lovely self in the usual place - unfortunately I can't show them here because Jake was holding up a towel to protect your modesty (that's when he wasn't whistling and tapdancing to distract the photographer) :D

  4. Great feature article, WDW! Thanks for scanning it for us, sorry for the necessary contortions you had to go through!!
Unfortunately I caught a cold a few days ago and it doesn't seem to go away *sigh*
Sorry to hear you don't like artichokes, I love them, but I can't cook them like my mum can :)

I like the idea of this PoP being the first of a series, and that the film will showcase some of Jake's comedic talent :)

    Hugs

  5. Thanks so much, Paola! And I'm sorry you have a cold, too. I'm also sorry because I am so behind on my emails!

I love how excited Jake is about PoP, it shines out more than it has for a few of Jake's films. It's clear this one was fun and he loved it - there he was, the centre of attention in Disney's movie of the year. Excellent!

It's a well-known fact that artichokes are an aberration and should only be eaten by mistake :DD

  6. "You have a kind of traditional star power from these two people who weren't stars when the movie started."

i'm not sure i understand what he means.but if he's saying Jake wasn't a star (or well known) before they started shooting the movie then i disagree strongly.
if i read or hear "promising actor" used for Jake one more time i'm gonna slap someone.he delivered a loooong time ago.

well the first PoTC had a colon in the title too.and they didn't even know if they'd even make money.cause pirate movies had been dead for years.well i'm still hoping for no sequels.we'll see.
i'm glad Jake got good reviews from the screening in LV though. :)

  7. Ohhh i skipped reading the article on here and i'm going to wait till i can get my hands on a copy on thursday! Cant wait :D

I was just watching university challenge and there was an 'Oscar winning movie score' round including Slumdog Millionare and Dr Chivago. The last one was BBM :) As we have a little competition in my family: who can answer the most right..I got so excited my exact words were 'BKBCK MNTN!' very very loudly. The response was "What..?" with some confused glances :D

  8. Hi Gretchen :D Mike Newell, as he's said, has watched Jake grow up and he wanted him for the role so he knows as well as anyone what a fine actor Jake is - but he's not had such a big 'Hollywood' movie role as this before, and that's how I interpret his statement. If Jake hadn't been known/respected before the movie there's no way Jerry would have gone with him. The colon thing was a joke :D

Hey Silver! I'm trying to imagine how on earth that sounded when you said that!! No wonder you got some looks. But at least you got the point - if they let you.

  9. Thanks for the link but, seriously, this is so not worth talking about - we thrashed it out yesterday, the guy's been emailing me and I've had enough of it all.

So it's time to move on tonight :D

  10. wonderful magazine article, thanks for posting it and pics of Jake in Montreal. too bad those fans didn't get to see Jake.

And as far as that rumor about Jake. I wouldn't give the lies a bit of attention. Jake is a gentleman and a good person.

  11. Thanks for the article. But I can't read now, I'm busy.

Did not like the second picture. It was a bad photoshop.

  12. WDW you are fantastic. Two great posts in a row. I'm just catchin up. Posting from my gorgeous new iPod which I love almost as much as jakey. Thanx for all mucho effort.

  13. Glad you liked the article Sweetpea. These are hardly just fans - We're talking the famous Ted and Lisa here!

Er ok, Monica :D It is an odd pic.

Thanks TD! And have you got one of these new all-fangled all-singing all-dancing iPod Touchy things? Cos I have one of those too - aren't they amazing?! Fill it with Jake, go on :D The mucho effort was well worth it :D But it has given me a crick in the neck...

  14. Hugs to Monica xx

The problem wth my new iPod Touchy thing is I keep getting sucked in to iTunes and particularly tonight! I blame my fever :D

  15. Thanks for the article and Atti's picture, even if he's...hum...busy. :D

I hope you feel better soon and freetraveller too. I'm praying I won't get sick, half of the people at my office have colds!

    Olympia

  16. Hi there Olympia! Thanks for that - yes, Atticus is definitely otherwise engaged... They're dropping like flies at my office too. You'd have thought people would get colds when it was... cold... and not when it's warming up!

  17. I was only peeing!

  18. Yeah... that's what they all say...:D This has now put an image in my head of Paula Radcliffe running the London Marathon a few years back - thanks for that :/

Jeeze Jake what are you feeding your dog? Whew.

  22. No wonder Jake looked like he was whistling or chewing gum when Atticus was taking a poop. He was trying to breathe through his mouth.

  23. Night all! Thanks for the company on my sick bed :D I'll be relying on you all in the morning for cups of tea and a ton of grapes :)

  24. Weren't stars when the movie started? - Jake had an Oscar nomination. He wasn't an unknown and i think he's thought of as "a star" and also an actor. (Not always exclusive).

  25. Just to clarify something...I actually live in Montreal and have a house here, I also live in Europe part time but do still live here...so we weren't actually visiting here...but hey Montreal is still recovering from our adventures so that it true...and not so sure about that "fan" part either! ;-)

    Cheers, Ted

  26. Love the Empire article (although I won't allow myself to read it until I get my very own copy to read and look at and pretty much *thud* all over the place over)! ;-) Thanks WDW for sharing this with us the minute (or the second?!) it arrived at your door (and for crawling under your desk to scan it)!

Another fun and wine drinking night in Montreal with the 'famous' Ted - LOL! He actually took some interesting pictures today (no...not of Jake!) that I think he may be sending to you, WDW! Hee Hee!

I head home tomorrow but not before breakfast in Old Montreal! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  27. ah Ted and Lisa, yep I know of them. Didn't they put a GPS on Jake when he wasn't looking? :D (and they call themselves FANS :P)

WTF?! Atticus's poop aroma is wafting across the Atlantic?!! Well that's one way to cut down on birth rates, immigration and street beggers.

  29. Wow, that's some powerful poop. So lovely to see Atticus and Jake again. I saw Marley and Me and thought of Jake and Atticus over the years - what a journey for both of them.

Just to clarify something...I actually live in Montreal and have a house here, I also live in Europe part time but do still live here...so we weren't actually visiting here...but hey Montreal is still recovering from our adventures so that it true...and not so sure about that "fan" part either! ;-)

Also not to confuse our Ted with the scandalmonger Ted Casablanca who is obviously fishing for a story that simply isn't there.

Skillfully and eloquently handled WDW, you have so much class. Also thought about what you said and you're right.

Ted and Lisa's adventures should be made into a movie or something.

I'm a little disappointed that Jake has to share the front page with Robin Hood and Iron Man but I guess he's in good company.

Keep well everyone with lots of echinacea.

  30. Hi there everyone! I'm a sickie... managed to make it out of bed for a cup of tea. It's not pretty.

Good to see you Ted! How's the head? Thanks for the clarification :-) Looking forward to seeing the pictures and for you making your way back to Blighty x

Morning BBMISwear :-) I have to admit I waited only as long as it took to get the wrapper off. I really want to see these pictures! Have a safe trip home after another bakery!

Ooh Sniffin... makes me rather relieved I can't smell anything...

So good to see you Sheba - I don't know about that but that's such a kind thing to say, thank you *) I agree about the company on the cover (especially as there's almost no Iron Man 2 in the mag) but yep that's good company. Be well, Sheba xxx

I now have a date with Sherlock Holmes :) I'm going to look at its Rachel McAdams a little differently now too!

  31. Nice to see more PoP promotion. :)

As for the Montreal "story" thankfully it seems most realize that the guy is an ass and looking for attention in the worst way and that Jake is a class act...period. 'Nuff said on that.

WDW, so sorry you are not feeling well. :( Sending you some virtual chicken soup. :)

Ah, Atti you are a character. :p

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks for the article scan, WDW. I'm thinking that while PoP will be very entertaining, and it will make money, it won't be nearly the eye-popping hit they wil have with Sorcerer's Apprentice.

As I speak to my own kids, they tell me they are really looking forward to "Clash of the Titans" as well. I think PoP is "family fare." It will appeal to younger kids.

I am so angry about that despicable blogger in Montreal. What a repulsive human being! If it had been me, I'd have bashed his head in!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks Get Real! I'd love some virtual veggie chicken soup *) I need Jake to plump up my pillows too :D You are so right about the 'class act' - so right :)

Hi 15:14 :D I'm not so sure about the Sorcerer's Apprentice (possible because I have some Nic Cage issues!) but I think that might appeal to really young audiences. I can just see PoP and Titans appealing to the same people. I'm really looking forward to Clash of the Titans although I think it's a shame they decided to add 3D to it. I'm glad they haven't done that to PoP. Great to film something with 3D technology, but I'm not so keen on it being added later.

    Me too...

Can someone put the kettle on?

  34. Hi WDW,
Yes its a Touchy IPod. Very Feelie. I am a convert! Also off work as I have a cold and been playing with it all day. Except I popped out to see if Empire had come in at the local store - not till Thursday apparently. Can I resist your scans till then?

Just got to add (sorry, I know you don't want to pursue it) but I think the 'bar fight' story is fantastic! A bar fight without being in a bar fight, keepin the moral high ground; and with a very bad bad guy - absolutely perfect. And even the Telegraph has picked it up. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that's it, but it is 'citing stuff! ;D
    TD

  35. Hi TD! It always makes me smile how you see something from a completely different perspective - and that is such a good thing. I don't like any of this horrible story (not least because of any chance at all of Jake's feelings being hurt) but I agree with your summary of this ... (NSFW word).

Anyhow... I'm sorry to hear you're coldy too. You should have heard me when I said it was out on Thursday! :D Get better soon and enjoy the very touchy feely ipod :DD I love mine so much. I've just gotta stop buying songs for it... I ended up downloading Hazel O'Connor and Boomtown rats last night!

    ReplyDelete
  36. and that Jake is a class act

Jake's dancing on the bench makes that highly debatable!

    ReplyDelete
  37. And that was just one of the many elemnts of this 'story' that was completely made up and will get this moron sued!

Get at Jake here and... I don't like it...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Boomtown Rats? ooooohoh!
I'm sucker for the apps myself. I downloaded the 'How to Train Your Dragon' game, as an experiment y'know - and I'm addicted! I hope there is a PoP app soon.

Thanx for the warning re Thurs Empire - I completely missed it! typical...

Lovely to see BBMISwear and Ted posting on the same post. Supestars!

Thanks for your comments WDW. Appreciated! Hope you feel better soon. I can't hear anything with my cold (affects my ears, feel like I'm in a swimming pool, permanently. Its v tiring.) Oh well, at least time for jaking!

  40. Hi TD! I don't have many game apps as there are so many and I don't know any good ones (beyond mah jong!) If you find any good ones do let me know. I'll have a look at that dragon one :D I love using the Kindle app on mine so I can read on the bus.

My head's like that too :(

Good idea, Atti! You're most certainly hairier at the moment :D

New post - thanks to Monica for an ostrich gift :D
