One of the many, many aspects of WDW that I have thoroughly enjoyed over the years is when we can all share in an adventure and there have been quite a few. Today we have another. You may have heard that a movie called Love and Other Drugs is on the way, surrounded by an increasingly deafening buzz of anticipation, not to mention the scent of that well-known cologne Oscar Fever. Last night, our very own BBMISwear was able to attend an early screening of the film in Boston - also there was Edward Zwick, the director. Lisa has written a non-spoilery report of her evening for us. And so.... let us transport ourselves to a full Boston theatre, humming with the excitement of the prospect of seeing Love and Other Drugs... Here's our invitation.
'The theater was full - of course. There was applause at the end and the little I heard of people talking after it seemed everyone only had good things to say. Ed came in and said he does not like to talk too much about a film before it has been seen as he feels the film should speak for itself. He then went on to discuss how the drug industry has changed so much over the years and many here (at the screening) may not remember back when it was illegal to advertise pharmacutical drugs but it was and therefore there were a lot less of them in our medicine cabinets, again, for those here that are of the age to remember (side note - I'm one of those people)! He said that that is not what this film is about but he thought it was important to know this fact. He said the film is about so much more than the pharmaceutical drug business - that it is about the relationships of people and the actors take us from moment to moment. He said that all involved in this film found it very important to do this...to show us moment to moment. (heavy stuff)!'
Some details about the film... 'The film is just a little short of 2 hours long. There's been talk of this film being sometime in the mid-90's but just to clarify it opens with the date 1996 clearly on the screen so the audience knows exactly when it took place. The film is absolutely incredible. I honestly have never seen a movie before that had laugh out loud parts AND close to tears heart breaking parts AND incredibly hot sex scenes! All this with 2 incredible A-List actors...we just don't get movies that have all this but this one does and Ed Zwick did one helluva job bring this all to life!!'
'I don't know how much to say about the film without giving too many spoilers...Jake and Anne are everything people have been saying...their performances are killer and they look so damn comfortable together you would think they are really a couple. The sex scenes are out of this world and OMG Jake is truly the most sexy person alive (yes, we already knew this...but it is 1000% confirmed after seeing this movie)!!! He says Lisa 6 times in this movie *thud*'
'There are scenes that did not make it (as with every film) but one specifically that is in the trailer and one specifically we saw "on set photos" of. Damn. I hate missing scenes. I want to see every single scene they filmed! There is also a scene in the trailer that is a little different in the film (they obviously included the more PG rated clip here instead of the real clip that appears in the movie that makes it R and so much better). This is 2 seconds of different footage that only a Gyllenhaalic will pick up on...ha ha! Oh...and something us Gyllenhaalics will LOVE. Jake is in every single scene. Every single solitary scene (except maybe some weird transition scene once or twice for 10 seconds). Seriously. His is the first voice we hear and the first face we see and it lasts through to the last scene. I freaking love that. I never want to watch a Jake film again where we don't see him in every scene.!! I love Ed Zwick right now!!'
'One thing about Jake's character Jamie Randall (who by the way I am officially madly in love with...damn) is he is all over the board when it comes to personality traits...you see this character grow right in front of our eyes and it's wonderful. And I saw a little of each past Jake character in Jamie. I know that's easy for a true Gyllenhaalic to do because we watch all his movies over and over but I clearly saw Homer in October Sky, Donnie in DD, Pilot in Highway, Sam in TDAT, Jack, Douglass, Tommy, etc. - seriously - those 3 second zoom ins of those expressions of his and you see these other characters and you see Jamie develop over the course of his and Maggie's time together and Jesus I just don't know how to put this into words. And Annie, BTW, is by far the most talented, prettiest, sweetest actresses of her generation and beyond and I hope she gets everything she deserves. We all knew this already as well but, again, confirmed and then some after one views this film!!'
A big big thank you to BBMISwear for taking the time to write all this down for us and make it come alive. This is going to be something special.
Ed Zwick is not a director that puts himself forward but Love and Other Drugs is a film that he cares deeply for (as you'll see below) and so he is on the road to tell people what this film is about, what type of movie it is, and how he worked with two extraordinary actors. Yesterday he was interviewed by FilmGordon Radio on Keeping it Real. You can listen to the interview as part of this podcast. Here are the pertinent sections which, yet again, demonstrates how well Jake chooses his directors. It's not all one way.
On how the film was initially marketed (before the arrival of the second much more favoured trailer) 'I think the first piece of material that came out on the film was a little traditional. It said oh might have thought maybe it's just a romantic comedy, a chick's film and I think that probably what you found is it's more than that.'
'[Anne's] smoking in the movie and you know both of them have done very good work. Annie has taken particular risks in these last couple of years with the stuff she's done and I think each of them show parts of themselves that people really had never seen. I mean Jake is just dead out funny and she's really really badass and it's a pretty combustible combination between the two of them.'
Is the film like Love Story? 'No, you're some of the first to really see the movie... obviously that movie was fun because it was a date movie. It was a little bit syrupy for my tastes. I'd like to think this movie's a little bit hipper and funnier but I can understand what they're saying. It moves you romantically and tries to talk about a romance in a way that's kind of intimate. I get it.'
The dialogue seemed so natural, almost as if they were adlibbing. Was this because of the screenplay or because of the chemistry between actors who were friends, having worked together before? 'It is the script because without that if you'd ever met actors in private I think you'll know they're not quite as charming and clever as that [laughs]! These two happen to be very smart, very funny, warm people and so it's a combination. It's the me getting to know them, them getting to understand my work, I'll start to write a little bit more in their voices, if you will, and it all sort of becomes one thing. It all coalesces. You spend a couple of weeks rehearsing together and then this is what you end up with.'
Is Love and Other Drugs the pharmaceutical version of Jerry Maguire. 'That's a great movie you're talking about. Cameron Crowe is a friend of mine and the idea that you're trying to make a movie that talks about what work is and at the same time where love fits in to that that's a subject that we all deal with in our lives.;
'I care about [LAOD]. We've played this movie now in Kansas City, Missouri, in DC, Atlanta, in Chicago - it plays just as well in any of the places that we do it and that's usually a signal that we've touched something that people are going to respond to. I'm hopeful.'
Ed has won an Oscar as a producer but he hasn't been nominated as a director - which role means more? 'As a director... I think, I'll tell you the truth, I think people don't quite understand what it is to try to make yourself invisible. The reason that so many actors that I've worked with have been nominated and won, the reason that the movies have gotten attention, is that I've chosen not to put myself out there in front of the movies. I think when I'm doing my best work is when people don't even realise that there's a director there. I think that's the hardest thing to do. I think it's actually easier to be self-conscious and to call attention to this unbelievably cool shot, and this very outrageous experimental attempt to do something. God knows I could do that. I choose not to. I really think that the reason we go to the movies is to be involved in a story and to really get involved in the performances and I think that's why these actors want to work with me, because they know that's what they're going to get.And it's OK. You know, I think I get plenty of attention. We all know that awards are what they are and then we've forgotten that they took place. So the fact that I'm able to keep making movies and making movies that I want to make with these extraordinary, talented people, that's plenty of an award.'
'Directing is the love because you're really painting the picture and when you're producing, you're buying all the paints and choosing all the colours and setting up the easel but somebody else is painting the picture and I really love to be the one who's actually painting the picture... I can't lie, it is about directing. It always has been.'
How viagra changed the world: 'That was the moment that it all changed. Before that, the FDA wouldn't allow you to advertise. They changed their policy and suddenly every commercial, every second commercial was a drug to buy and they set upon millions of dolloars in to it and people were telling their doctors what they wanted and suddenly all of our medicine cabinets filled up with more and more drugs and the world changed. And this was the moment when that happened. And I wanted to remind people that it wasn't always like that and then it changed.'
Is the film finished? 'That's the final print. That's the movie. We're done. And if we get some pushback from the pharmaceutical industry... you know what? If you're not pissing somebody off you're doing something wrong.' Finalyl, Ed suggests that he might be doing something with DiCaprio in the future but 'he takes a while, I take a while'.
I have warmed to Ed, as I have done with most of Jake's directors.
And finally...
It's great to see the votes coming in on The Sasquatch Poll. And just as well because the matter is not losing its urgency. Jake was seen yesterday at the Momofuku Milk Bar (a rather alien concet for this neck of the woods) in NYC and he was 'a VERY bearded Jake gyllenhaal'. Worrying emphasis, I'm sure you'll agree. An upside is that, as you can see from the website, they have very nice straws.
Includes pictures from BBMISwear and IHJ. Thanks Lisa!
Let me just say that if I wasn't before, I definitely am PRIMED for this movie! Jake in every scene! I sure hope my heart surgery worked, because I wouldn't miss this for love nor money (nor health)!! Could there be a better way to go?!
ReplyDeleteBring it ON!!!
OMG I can't explain how excited I am to see this movie!
ReplyDeleteJake and Anne = Perfection :)
this is so exciting, isn't it?
I hope we all can see the movie asap, but this report just made me crazier about it :P
a VERY bearded jake gyllenhaal ???
that's not good! let's hope he will change his mind :)
Squeee! I'm so jealous of you BBMISwear! Thank you so much for the report, you are so lucky! This is doing nothing to help my impatience over seing this movie, though. It sounds fantastic! Love the fact that Jake is in every scene. :)
ReplyDeleteI saw a comment on IMDB about there being too much sex in LAOD. Is there really so much of it? I wouldn't see it as a flaw but the commenter obviously wasn't a gyllenhaalic. :DD
Also does it have the mandatory shower scene? :D
Thanks for the interview with Ed Zwick, WDW. Very interesting. :)
Olympia
I just... just... actually just really don't know how to comment on this. Whatever I try to put in words doesn't come close to the adrenaline rush within me. What a treat!!! Thank you both BBMISwear and WDW for this amazing story. This is a post we can spend weeks chewing and commenting on, and I'm sure we'll do that. ;-)
ReplyDeleteOne thing's for sure: I won't need to put the heater on this weekend. I feel as hot as a firebreathing dragon.
Damn, Lisa, you lucky bitch! :D :D :D Thank you so much for your report and thank you, WDW for bringing it to us!! If only I didn't have to wait so long till I can see it...
ReplyDeleteHow did you do it?????
Jake in every scene sounds too good to be true!!!! :D :D :D I watched Rendition again the other night and like always I really regretted it that the movie still went on after we have seen the last of Jake. This happens way too often to Jake! :D :(
Will you all hate me when I say that in quite a few scenes/ pictures from LAOD Jake reminds me of Robbie Williams???? :D :D :D
I might have to watch the trailer again... :D :D I really can't wait to see this movie!!!!
Hey Lisa! Thanks a lot. What a wonderful review. Now we have the so wanted first hand comments.
ReplyDeleteThanks WDW for Ed's interview transcript.
Love the JAKE-in-every-scene concept. That is something I noticed I miss when I see some of his pictures. And I liked the thing of seeing a bit or past characters in this acting.
Shave, shave, shave... ;-D
Hello!
ReplyDeleteSorry for disappearing on you - had to have an emergency cleanup operation after Mr WDW decided to trail dog poo all round the flat!!! And, as someone who never does housework,, this wasn't pleasant as you can imagine... So deep breaths, relaxing drink, read coments.... phew...
Hey Gyllenhaalisgr8! We are primed and ready! But so sorry to hear about the surgery - do take it easy and, if necessary, we'll watch Jake for you... :D Take care.
Me too, Linda! It could be a while before many of us see it but I think it's gonna be worth the wait. Yes, the VERY bearded is alarming... ;)
Hi there Olympia! It's such a great report. I got the email when I was on the bus and it was so crowded, I must ahve got some funny looks :D And it's told so well!
Too much sex?? Too much? Er... I don't understand...
This film looks like great shower scene material :D
Thanks so much, Lady Ekster! There's so much to think on here it's true and it's all just fascinating. I'm extremely interested in Zwick now. The way he brings out the best from his actors and stays in the background. Jake has such differing experiences. And until today I knew so little about Zwick beyond the names of his films. I also want to see Jerry Maguire again now.
Love the ''firebreathing dragon'!!!
Hey Uli! I am so ignoring your Robbie Williams comparison - SOOO ignoring it :D Do agree about the lack of Jake in Rendition though. I must see that again - probably this weekend as I have Monday and Tuesday off :D
Hi Eureka! Posting at the same time :D It's so great to get a review from one of us :) And yes, the mantra, shave!
ReplyDeleteBack again and reading the post again. Had hopes of being able to put some coherent, insightful *cough* sentences together, but am again jumping up and down in my seat. Is it next year already??
ReplyDeleteI'm happy I put LAOD as my #1 in your MoveBrit post, WDW. After tonight I'm certain it's gonna earn that spot. ;-)
@gyllenhaalisgr8 I hope all goes well with your surgery! I've had heart problems a couple of years ago, it being such a vital organ makes it quite the ride. Good luck and tell your surgeons you've got a hart workout coming up with Jamie Randall so they better take very good care of you. ;-)
Wow! Lady Ekster, thank you so much, I love that you're re-reading the post. It's such a shame we have so long to wait. I just keep telling myself it'll be worth it. And I so echo that for Gyllenhaalisgr8 :)
ReplyDeleteSpeechless....
ReplyDeleteI sooo can't wait for LAOD.
Maybe Jake's doing a reversal disguise trick on us? Going around all full of facial hair and then will suddenly shave and no-one will expect it?? (I sure can hope can't I)
Please, please shave Jake!!
CS
Hey everyone! WDW knows I’ve been involved in a work project that has had me going non-stop for quite a few weeks so I told her I probably wouldn’t even be awake enough to comment here tonight but after reading all these wonderful comments about my LAOD report I couldn’t help but get a 2nd, 3rd and 4th wind! You guys have me so pumped up all over again – thank you!! I feel a bit like WDW herself as I feel like I should comment back to everyone. (Sorry, WDW, hope you don’t mind)!
ReplyDeleteFirst, WDW – a big thank you and hugs! You always make me feel special when I get to do a unique “Jake thing” and I know you know how much I love sharing with those who we know will truly appreciate it (like everyone right here who regularly visits your site). Thank you for always giving me the opportunity to share all the details!
Gyllenhaalisgr8 – I hope you’re feeling well (you sure do sound like you are right now) and I’m thinking that LAOD will get that heart pumping perfectly scene after scene! Honestly, there is more Jake in this film than in PoP and that’s no easy task.
Linda, you said it, Jake and Anne = Perfection. The two of them rocked this film (in more ways than one). :-)
Olympia!! Long time no see!! You’re right about it only causing more impatience (and I know that sounds weird because I just saw it) but you know how we go see Jake movies as soon as they come out and then we go again? And then again? And then again? Well, you can’t do that with an advance screening and I knew there would be the withdrawal factor before I even got there...and there is. Already. Damn. BUT...it really will be so worth the wait like many are thinking here! It’s hard to answer about “too much sex” without giving too much away but I’ll say that Ed doesn’t over do it in the way of putting in a sex scene for the sake of putting in a sex scene, if you know what I mean. They are showing what is going on between two twenty-somethings who are newly together and extremely attracted to each other. It’s true to life in that way. Again, I don’t want to give too much away as far as your shower question goes but you have seen that there is a bathtub in this movie, right?! :-)
I love your comments LadyEkster – and coming back to read more – that’s the kind of stuff I do!! Us Gyllenhaalics can’t seem to get enough, huh?! And you think you’re hot now? You just wait for those two hours watching LAOD! Bring a fan Lady!!
Hi Uli! You’re right…I am a lucky bitch…ha ha!! I certainly have had a lot of great Jake experiences over the years and I know how lucky I am and appreciate every single one! They certainly haven’t come without effort, though, and I figure if something makes you happy and you’re not hurting anyone then why not just go for it? And again and again and again! As far as how I did this one, I work with people who are in advertising and they are the people who host advance screenings since the studios relies on the advertising agencies to get the word out about their films. It involves getting the info at the right time and being able to get to the screening early and waiting, etc. I would have dropped just about anything to make it to this one (and in fact I did – and am glad that I did)!!
Hi Eureka! I’m glad you liked the first hand comments…I think us Jake fans can read review after review but coming from an average movie-goer we only get so much out of it. When a Gyllenhaalic reports on something it’s with other Gyllenhaalics in mind…if that makes any sense?!
I was somewhat speechless at first too, Claire, but then I found my voice. And now I can’t stop rambling so will make myself do so now...I’ve taken up way too much space. Sorry all!!
Thanks again WDW for sharing my gushing and giving us all here a place to do just that! And for the Ed interview...I haven’t listened to it yet but I think I’m going to love it even more after seeing the film last night! Wow. I’m still so blown away.
Until next time… :-)
Ah, Anon, you know me so well! When it comes to Jake, there can never be too much sex...or porn...but too much beard -- eek! I didn't mean to confuse you all. I had my heart ablation and now we are just seeing if it "took". I've had atrial fib for eleven years and honestly, before Brothers AND Prince my heart whacked out (I swear, that boy will be the death of me!). I missed the first screening of Brothers because I was in the ER, but I toughed it out for Prince because I was NOT going to miss that first show! My big question now is I may have retorn my left rotator cuff; I see the orthopedic surgeon Thursday. If it is a reality, I should be mended enough (hopefully) for Nov. 24. I think it would be cool if those of us who will get the movie on the 24th arrange to see it on the same day and then blog, drool, squee, etc., together! Wouldn't that be awesome?!
ReplyDeleteWow! I checked this postas soon as it was up. Was on my way to a nap but the Gyllenhaalic in me could not go to sleep without reading first. It blew me away!! But I had to leave before commenting because the little Jakes in my eyes wouldn't let me think properly. ;-)
ReplyDeleteNow that I'm back, I read again and... the magic is still there! Loved your report, BBMISwear. So glad you got to see a screening and so very grateful you shared your thoughts with us.
Another historical moment in the shape of a film with Jake is coming up. From what we've seen and what we've read, it feels like that -and it's a fantastic feeling!
Thanks for the transcript of Zwick's interview as well, WDW. Very interesting and great for a warm up.
I'll repeat the obvious: Can't wait for LAOD!! :-D
Back to the beard, if I may (I know, it's hard to think about much else than Jake Sex), but I felt compelled to make this request of sorts regarding the very hairy one: http://twitpic.com/2rmdxi
ReplyDeleteGreat to read your comments BBMISwear! Thanks for the fan suggestion, good idea. ;-)
ReplyDeleteUps, sorry gyllenhaalisgr8 for the misunderstanding. *blush* Glad the surgery is behind you! I hope everything will work out fine (and in time ;)).
Back to Beardgate indeed: '@jojoribant Jake gyllenhall at the foodie show at PS1. Big red beard!'
So it's not just big, it's red. RED!
I can hardly wait!
ReplyDeleteThis is *exactly* the genre of film that I've waited so long for Jake to make. It's very likely the kind of film that Jake does best, because he's a naturally funny person.
I emphasize seeing as many different films as possible (a goal of 100 per year), but if "Love and other Drugs" is as good as I think it's going to be, I could see it multiple times.
Today I saw "Legend of the Guardians--the Owls of Gahool." With such a large cast, you8'd think there'd be at least one that had been in at least one movie with Jake, but no such luck. A lot of the actors are Australian or British, and there aren't a lot that have made American films.
all I can say is, is it Nov yet? Thanks BBMISWEAR for your report. I wish I'd been in Boston (again) with you to see the movie.
ReplyDeleteI was already excited to see it now I am doubly so.
I am hoping that it will be shedding season for Jake soon.
and we can bid farewell to the beard.
sweetpea
While I hope LAOD does well, I don't think it will be Oscar bound, too many other great movies with greater buzz out there. And once again, the early promo of a Jake film seems to be all over the place. Like POP, the film makers do not know what audience to target. The first promo was really misleading and labeled the movie a romcom which is clearly not Zwick's intention. Once labeled here in America, its hard to overcome.
ReplyDeleteThe Social Club and King seemed to be the films with the most buzz both Oscar and press wise here in America. I don't think LAOD or Jake will get an Oscar nod. Maybe Anne will have an outside chance because the lead actress field isn't as crowded as the lead actor. The film is clearly a comedy with drama which doesn't so well at Oscar time.
I hate to be a downer but I think
you may building yourselves up for a disappointment which is your choice. But it sucks for Jake.
While test audiences are great they don't really get people to the theatres. And some of the target audience members are clearly bias toward Jake. I hope I am completely wrong but I do think Jake has a long successful acting career ahead of him. An Oscar will come but maybe not this year.
I just hope the movie brings him new fans.
I have no time to write anything except - THANK YOU BBMISwear and WDW!
ReplyDeleteMorning everyone! Chilly and beautifully sunny :)
ReplyDeleteHi Claire!
Hey BBISwear! Great to see you and thank you so so much my friend. And such a big long lovely huggable comment :-)
Gyllenhaalisgr8, I hope you are completely mended as soon as is possible xx That picture is great! I love how you can do all this clever stuff.
Thanks so much Alejandra! I love the image of the little Jakes dancing before your eyes :)
OMG, Lady Ekster, Big and RED!!! Is he going for some Viking role?? Whatever next. The bells could be next..
Morning Paul! I agree that this is a genre Jake may well have been ade for when he is so good in all the others as well. I'm trying for a goal of 100 movies this year. I can't get enough of them, and I have Jake to thank for that. You inspire me as well, Paul, whenever I hear about your movie trips I look up the films (as we don't always get them here).
Hi Sweetpea :)
Hey Jake Fan! I don't agree really because I don't think we're setting ourselves up to be disappointed as I for one am expecting nothing but a very good movie. According to BBMISwear (whose opinion I completely trust) and test audiences, that's exactly what I'm going to get. I do agree that the first trailer gave the wrong impression but the buzz surrounding the poster and the second trailer on the net has been nothing but positive. I never expect Oscars for Jake, thank heavens, but I do expect good movies and I'm pretty confident we have one here :D It is a shame though that the film is not getting much of anything outside the US.
Thanks Mermon!
Have a great day everyone - so good to see you all! And the voting is fab. Big red beard, oh my...
Jake Fan: I hate to say this, but I kind of agree with you. How we perceive Jake is not necessarily how the rest of the world does. That was so evident with PoP. It was supposed to be the new Lawrence of Arabia and it was [almost] a joke. I keep thinking that if they hadn't kept saying it was a video game movie there wouldn't have been that preconceived notion that it was going to flop. I never saw the video game and I thought the movie stood on its own just fine. As for the success of Pirates of the C., why didn't they keep saying it was based on an old Disneyland (yes, LAND) ride?? But no. I have faith in L&OD because I have faith in Jake's acting ability and persona, but it's like the rest of the world doesn't see him like we do. Do you know what I mean? I hate to think that it might still be that gay-thing stigma from BBM. It is totally beyond me that Jake isn't the biggest actor in the world, because he certainly has the talent (and looks). But I digress. I hope that L&OD is embraced by the rest of the populice as it WILL be by us. But after rather luke warm responses to Brothers and PoP, I just don't know what to think. Jake deserves so much more.
ReplyDelete"And now for something completely different..." Jake morphing into Big Foot! http://twitpic.com/2jx7hm
ReplyDeleteHello WDW and everyone
ReplyDeleteWow, great post, we know so much more about LAOD than we did. Something really to look forward to.
Ed Zwick also directed The Last Samurai - I watched it for the third time about three weeks ago - was very well done and moving. It augurs well for LAOD. Now I just need to catch the Zwick directed Blood Diamond...
Cheers
Tui
Another great read and thank you for the firsthand comments BBMIswear.
ReplyDeleteaction replay:
I sooo can't wait to see it.
SHAVE!!!
action replay end!
@paulh
well as you mentioned it - the cast might not be jake-related BUT the soundtrack is by 30 Seconds to Mars - Kings and Queens, which is Jared Leto (plus 2) and he was in Highway with our Jake :D
What an interesting discussion - and a good opportunity to escape the mental images of Jake the Viking that are now haunting me (!).
ReplyDeleteI think we should stop measuring by numbers and awards. It's so easy to fall into that trap because they are measurable things, and we all like easy statistics. I totally agree that Jake deserves more number-wise. Higher Box Office ratings, more awards, hell yeah I want for him to need a closet for all his Oscars. But in the end those things don't matter at all - it's the stories that stay with us and the emotions they evoke in us.
So what PoP wasn't exactly the new Pirates? I LOVE this movie and PoP introduced many people around the globe to Jake's amazing talents, including me. Hadn't it been for PoP I would never have found this blog and the immense fun I have following the posts and the comments. Have a look at Twitter and see how many people enjoy PoP and Brothers now that they have the dvds. Etc. etc. Those are the things that count, despite them being impossible to literally count. ;-)
Hello!
ReplyDeleteHi Gyllenhaalisgr8 :D I have a feeling that LAOD (and SC) is a movie that may contribute to Jake being seen by more people as someone capabale of great roles and imense talent. I think PoP introduced Jake and his films to huge new audiences (I can tell that from the readership of WDW). Unfortunately, there was no such increase with Brothers - partly I think because other movies - PoP, Rendition, Zodiac - had been accompanied by festivals and big events etc. Brothers had so little. If I had to choose one role that I wish Jake hadn't done it would be Brothers. I think he got a lot out of it as an actor (working with Sheridan etc, a whole new style) but I a very ready for films with Jake at their centre and with a storyline I can rewatch. I've drunk far too much coffee this morning as you can tell! Great pic too!!
Hi there Tui! We do indeed :) I really really like Last Samurai. I never thought I'd like it but I loved it.
Hi Sasha! Ooh, thanks for the info :D
Hi lady Ekster! Posting at the same time :D I could not agree with you more - these movies should not be measured by awards. I want Jake to have shelf upon shelf of them (remembering his face when he won the BAFTA) but it's not how I rate Jake's movies. If I'd had my way. Zodiac would have won a ton of them. And yes, PoP is GREAT! I'mm so so glad Jake made that - a film I can watch over and over again and which can be enjoyed by us and so many other people of all ages. And how I loved Jake in those costumes :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting discussion!
I want second what Lady Ekster said. I think it is great for an actor receive awards as an "official heads up" for his work - but in the end (and I (might just want to) believe that at the end of the that is what counts for Jake >>> that ppl have a great time watching the movie and talking about it.
ReplyDeletePleasure WDW :)
ohohohoh ... I have Q now that I thought about Highway or Brokeback Mountain and likewise movies.
ReplyDeleteHow do you actually know who the leading role is??? I never understood the concept *shameonme* To me there were always to leads when the whole story evolved about two people :D *stupidme*
In reading your comments, I encourage you to write my first (not much English I write with translator ... I hope you understand). As LadyEkster, thanks to PoP I met this talented actor and now I'm a big fan. I've seen most of his movies this summer (maybe all..) He is a different actor ... looking webs, forums, information and found this site (always with fresh news, thanks WDW). No matter the box office, important to have a chance to see him in interesting movies with good directors and so many different characters
ReplyDeleteRead this article, I find it interesting ...
http://www.blogomatic3000.com/2010/09/09/is-jake-gyllenhaal-going-to-be-our-next-a-lister/
I hope I did not offend anyone. I love all Jake's movies (not so hot on Proof, LOL) and OWN all of them. My home is literally wall-to-wall Jake! I loved PoP, saw it five times at the theatre and it is in my dvd player as I type. I just want L&OD to catpult Jake to the top of the leading men pile. I hope-hope-hope it does! But Jake has made amazing career choices, i.e. movie choices, and has said he wants to make movies people remember. Works for me!
ReplyDeleteSasha, I'm no authority, but leading actors are usually first on the advertisement. Jared Leto was lead in Highway (hes' the one who got his feet broken, LOL) and Heath was listed first for BBM (which I personally would argue!). But...Jake was Oscar-nominated for "supporting actor", so that probably means he was not the "lead".
And LadyEkster, I agree that PoP introduced to more people around the world to Jake! That was evident by the international box office! Not to mention all of the international followers on twitter and my facebook Jake Junk group!
Thanks gyllenhaalisg8 - that is a good point... the first one mentioned being the lead :) I'll go with that for now ;p
ReplyDeleteI for one -btw- didn't see anything how you could have offend anyone :D
At first, I was excited with this discussion about Oscar, but right now I just want it to be a good movie, fun, with good performances. Of course if the movie go to the Oscar, I'll be very happy.
ReplyDeleteI don't think people will be disappointed if it's not a film for Oscar. I think most people do not even think about Oscar when they watch movies. They want to have fun. And I hope they have fun with this film, as well as the public was in session of BBM I Swear.
Thanks for your report BBM I Swear.
Yay, this is fun! It's so cool to have conversations like these with people who can utter more than just "Oooh he's soooo smexy!" Not that we never squee, but you know what I mean. ;-)
ReplyDeleteA Jake Junk Facebook, gyllenhaalisgr8? That sounds intriguing! What's the url? I'm loving the twitpics you posted, even though the Sasquatch one gives me quite the shivers. *lol* And of course you didn't offend me. ;-)
I actually don't know if I want Jake to become Hollywood's leading man already. It depends on what comes with that label. Getting all the roles he wants and awards he deserves: yes. Us getting company from zillions of screaming, brainless girls: no.
To me Jake is A-list already and there isn't a doubt in my mind that he will reach Depp heights with age (the current king i.m.o. ;)). But with the highest levels of stardom often come the scariest levels of fandom, especially if the actor in question is a hot, young, allegedly single male... I would hate to see places like these flooded with Twilight- or HP-like talk. :-/ But maybe I'm too sensitive on that...
Hi!!I am a big Jake fan from Asia since BBM, and I love POP !! I know it's a disappointment in US box office, but I really love Dastan!!
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I can take my whole family to see Jake's film in the theater(honstly....it's a little odd taking my family to see BBM......), and they all love it!!! My brother even wanted to buy blue ray DVD. I am glad Jake took this film.I believe he can play any role, so.....MUSICAL!!!Jake!!
I'm getting so excited about LaOD finally arriving - I love that pic of Jake in a white tshirt and messy hair, with the red wine glass, is that in the film? :)
ReplyDelete@anon yep that is in the movie - as all the pics in this post :D
ReplyDeleteHi there everyone! So so good to see such a great conversation (Gyllenhaalisgr8 you definitely didn't offend anyone, just keeping a good conversation going). I've been to see Eat Pray Love this afternoon - definitely looking forward to writing about that for MB later... And great to see some new names! And special thanks to everyone who posts with a name, doesn't matter what it is, just so handy to have one :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome karmentxu! Thanks so much for posting and I'm really glad you like the site. That's a really interesting article by the way :)
And also welcome to Hui! Thanks for commenting! It's wonderful tosee Jake's fans from around the world. And that's great that you've hooked your family on PoP :D
My contribution to Sasha's question of who is lead in a movie would be that for me it can be whichever I wish. Especially in the case of BBM and Brothers. I know who I go to see a movie for.
And I couldn't agree more, Lady Ekster - heaven forbid we get into those territories. I love that we like to gush over our hot Jake but I also like it that we have other things in comon too :)
Now I have to go and heap scorn on a movie...
Hey everyone. I apologise for not posting for a while WDW! I don't think i'll be able to do much "Jaking" this year :( Very busy for so many reasons. Great to see you went to pre-screening Lisa :) Lucky you! Thanks for the report, sounds great! I can't wait for the build up to this, Jake back on the chat-shows :D
ReplyDeleteSilver
hehe WDW that is a different take on things ... and personally privately I take it like you - but I wondered award-wise ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Silver! Good to see you - I'll miss you - I hope you get some time. Jaking is a great way to relax remember!
ReplyDeleteHey Sasha! Awardwise it's definitely who is higher on the credits as has been said :)
Done with relish my Mb post on Eat Pray Love :D
Wow...I heard there were great conversations going on over here and I guess I heard right! I love all the opinions/comments about Jake's films and it's wonderful that there are different opinions. Like we've talked about so many times before...no matter how many tickets are sold at the box office or how many awards are won Jake has played such an incredible variety of roles over the years and that is what I think keeps his original fans coming back and new fans coming around for the first time. Jake is young and has a long, full, career in front of him and I can't wait to watch it all!
ReplyDeleteOne thing I want to say about my LAOD "report" is when I wrote it I wasn't writing it like a "report" at all! I was simply writing my (almost daily) email to my dear friend WDW and had no idea she was going to take my exact words and plop them word for word into the post!! I thought she'd at least use her expertise writing skills and make it kind of sound good - LOL!! But after I read it as part of the post and saw the reaction of everyone here I realized that I was writing this "report" as a true Gyllenhaalic and it was being read by a bunch of other true Gyllenhaalics so I guess it made sense to leave it exactly as it was. We see many movie reviews from unbias reporters but they don't always "report" on the little things us Jake fans want to hear about. Believe me, there are 100 more little things I could say but I won't...I want you all to see it without knowing too much. I know this - I know everyone here will love LAOD!! Awards or no awards.
You're welcome to the few more commenters who thanked me - it's my pleasure to share good things about Jake!!
I have 2 weeks worth of WDW posts to read and that will be my "me" time tonight for sure!
Until next time... :-)
is everyone asleep today? why no posts? just wondering...i am quite sure nobody died :-)jk :-)
ReplyDeleteYeay BBMISwear :-) What you wrote was fabulous and was written as one of us seeing Jake's film and there is no way on earth it could have been said better. And now we all want to see it all the more!
ReplyDeleteJake has a fabulous career infront of him and we'll be there with him. Love that! And I totally agree that LAOD will be special for us, regardles sof any awards or none. I'm so excited about this one and SC. :D Thanks so much again, my dear friend :-)
Hi Jaya - nope, I've not died :) Not even asleep yet. I do posts almost everyday but this is a very special post, very special, and has had a lot of readers and has sparked off quite a conversation. There have been so many comments today so I think everyone's been awake!
It seemed a shame to move on quickly after something like this. There'll be another tomorrow. I never do a post just for the sake of it :)
If I remember correctly, Heath and Jake could both have been nominated in the lead actor category for BBM but Focus chose to put Jake in the supporting actor category to increase their chance of winning. Putting them both in the same category would have possibly split the vote and lessen the chances of either winning. As amazing as Jake was, I agree with their choice to put Heath as the lead, I think BBM was Ennis`story.
ReplyDeleteAs for LAOD`s oscar buzz, I really don`t expect any nominations, it doesn`t seem like the type of movie that wins oscars. If it were really a possible contender, I think it would have been shown in some of the most important film festivals. I really don`t mind, I just hope Jake gets a box office succes. His decision to do a movie like POP instead of a more indie movie tells me that it`s what he`s trying for.
Olympia
Hey Olympia! So glad I caught that before ging to bed because I absolutely agree with every word :D On BBM and LAOD! I also believe that both movies will be films I watch and love for years :) Thanks for that!

Me,too!!I don't expect LAOD is an Oscar-type movie, and I don't really care whether Hathaway can get nod or not. I want it success on box office....
And this is the first real "rom-com" film starring by Jake,I just can't miss it!!(but I know it is more than a rom-com:) )
Morning Hui!
ReplyDeleteGood morning everyone! Running late today :D
A box office hit would be welcome, since "Rendition" and "Brothers" were seen by so few people, and "Prince of Persia" barely pulled in enough money to pay for the costs of production. There are folks out there (some of them higher ups in the studios) who like to tally how much an actor (any actor) has pulled in in recent films. That is why some folks are worried about whether Joaquin Phoenix (despite the awards for "Walk the Line") can have a film career at all going forward.
ReplyDeleteBut for me, the bottom is whether I can enjoy the next Jake film. I hope it won't have waterboarding or Taliban torture scenes. ;-)
Hi Paul! I agree that I can do without another Jake movie featuring waterboarding, although, having said that, I really like Rendition. I'm still trying to battle the notion that PoP didn't make any money - it made a ton of money, just not in the US. But yes, the bottom line is that the movie has to please me (or each of us) and I'm very excited about the next two so I'm happy!
ReplyDeleteI'm having such a lazy day, it's incredible. Gonna be settling down with Robin Hood later :)
We've gone from excitement that LAOD had been getting Oscar buzz to it not getting any Oscar nominations at all.
ReplyDeleteMovies don't have to be in Festivals to get nominated or win Oscars.
I think it will get some nominations.
I'm sure with the "serious movies" out there they will have more of a chance to win.
Looks like Fincher will get his nomination for "Social Network" and maybe the movie too. I'm sure it's great but can't imagine it being "greater" than Zodiac.
And POP is considered a successful film. It didn't quite make 100 million (tho it's somewhere in the 90's) in this country but really made the money in the rest of the world and so would think in that way it did make its money back.
Then there are the sales and rentals. Imagine that will add nicely to the U.S. overall.
And make some people slap their foreheads and wonder why they didn't see it on a big screen.
I'm not a bit worried about his career. He has a great resume of different types of movies even before the age of 30. POP was something he wanted to do because it would be fun and, again, a different kind of movie for him. There's no reason why he shouldn't. The two movies after that are very different and whatever is to come next will also be. Of course "money" is the concern of the studios but there are lots of actors who have a big hit and then go for a while with only minimual success but they continue to do movies because they are known for picking first-class projects. If people in droves don't go to see them doesn't mean they aren't excellent films.
Jake wants to work with good directors and they seem to want to work with him.
If Jake was a flash-in-the pan type it might be different but he started "slowly" as he didn't have a huge hit immediately to put him in the spotlight. That's a good thing.
He's known as an "actor" not just a movie star. Or as one article said he's one of the rare ones who can combine both.
Whew!
KC
Disney had major hopes for POP, we`re talking about a 3 movies franchise. POP clearly did not meet these expectations and was not near the success they hoped for. If it were, I think we`d have heard about a sequel by now. POP did well outside of the US but unfortunately, this is not what the film companies use to measure the success of a movie.
ReplyDeleteI think Jake did chose to do POP because it would be fun and different but also to get more known by the general public. It was a surprising choice of role for him, just look at the reactions when Disney announced he would play Dastan. I`m not sure how well known he is in the US, I wouldn`t say he`s an A list actor. But here in Canada, where the english canadian culture is very close to the american one, Jake is not by any means a household name. Most people have no idea who he is or they recognise him only if you say he was in BBM. I hope POP helped a little with that.
Directors love to work with talented actors but they also need their movies make money and using more recognised actors can help with that. I think being more known by the general public might help Jake get offers for more roles. That`s probabbly what most actors want, having more projects to chose from.
It doesn`t matter to me if Jake`s A list or not or if his movies are box office hits or if he wins awards. I will enjoy his movies just the same and continue closing my eyes during the horrible parts if need be. :)
And may I say, as much as I love coming here to drool over Jake, it`s nice to have a more serious conversation about him once in a while too. :)
Olympia
Some fantastic comments here - thank you :D I love that we can talk about the fun and the more serious - often in the same breath.
ReplyDeleteHi KC! Everything about Jake's career to date tells me that he is aiming to learn as much as he can, expreience as much as he can and give as uch of himself as he can. The great breadth of roles and his courage in making some choices as well as his determination to also have some fun, it speaks volumes and is why he is the actor I can't get enough of :)
Hey Olympia! It's similar here - in England Jake is not a household name quite yet, although he's getting there. PoP definitely helped and if LAOD does get some kind of decent release, that will too. And hugely excited about Source Code!
I think this is a conversation that can be continued into the next post...
Rom-coms have received Oscar nominations in the past : Tom Cruise in "Jerry Maguire", Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman", Diane Keaton in both "Annie Hall" and "Something Gotta Give", and Renee Zellweger in "Bridget Jones' Diary". There are many other examples.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Just because a movie doesn't premiere at a film festival doesn't mean it is not an awards contender. But, LAOD will premiere at the AFI film festival.
Trust me, if LAOD film reviews are stellar and the film burns up the box -office . It has a strong shot of being an Oscar contender.
I believe Jake is an A lister, proven by the buzz he creates on red carpets (and his acting speaks for itself). However. There are A listers recognized by the immediate world and there are A listers recognized by the movie buffs. I've followed Keanu Reeves since Bill & Ted days, and though he is not bad looking, the dear man cannot "act" to save his life. He is an A lister dependant on special effect movies, i.e. Speed/Matrix, which were huge and threw him into the average moviegoer's consciousness. Although L&OD definitely will not hurt Jake's career, he really needs another TDAT type movie with a premise that affects many people and gets their butts into theatres. Jake is one of those quiet A listers (like Kevin Spacey) who are phenomenal actors but not quite household names.
ReplyDeleteHi WDW and y'all,
ReplyDeleteOMG! What a fantastic way to start the week. Such a pleasure to catch up on this exciting news and great conversations. Thank you so much BBMISwear and WDW for sharing this amazing experience. You ladies Rock! This is a very special place indeed for Gyllenhaalics. Precious!
@LadyEkster - totally agree, and also hope the inevitability of his increasing popularity doesn't ruin this great community vibe we've got going. Everybody here knows he's so much more than a goodlookin' bloke. I think most of us here love and respect him for his craft, the type of stories he chooses to be a part of and his heartwarming, engaging persona.
Ok, I also occasionally succumb and *squee* due to his tantalising handsomeness; but I hope I never descend into blatant, public vulgarities.
He strikes me as being a very "active" instead of "reactive" person. A keen business man. Seeking out interesting projects and pursuing them with vigor. His contagious enthusiasm drawing others in, driving things forward... He'll never be sitting on his laurels, waiting for a job to fall in his lap. Wouldn't be surprised if he has a wishlist of directors and fellow actors he'd love to work with. I'm convinced he'll keep surprising us and inspiring us over the years, as he has done so far. And he'll keep growing, both as an actor and as a person. I sure can't wait for what ever's next... and look forward to grow with him.
LAOD sounds like such beautiful, authentic 1990's love story. Wouldn't be surprised if it reaps the awards at the box office and beyond. Looks like we'll have to wait for 30th December release date down under. I only hope they'll let me into the cinema, 'cos I'll be packing: a fan, ice-packs, duct tape and lots of tissues.
Hi Gen! I hope LAOD wins a bunch of Oscars, I'm just not going to be disappointed if it doesn't. I agree that being a RomCom certainly should rule it out especially as it's more than that.
ReplyDeleteHi Gyllenhaalisgr8! OMG agreed about Keanu Reeves - I do like him but sometimes I have to watch through fingers - just awful. I think Jake is most definitely an A-lister (not that I like that expression at all, reminds me of chimpanzee social groupings) and I can vouch for his appeal on the red carpet. He can walk it.
I'm not so sure about another TDAT, much as I loved that film and I did fall for him because of it, but I think something like LAOD could do the same job - although it does have an R rating. Having said that though, I like that Jake appeals to an older audience.
I am totally whittering on so I'll stop!
Hi Lemniscate! Totally agreed about Jake being interested in how movies work and how he'll be planning out certain goals and working towards them. I certainly don't think he's spent the summer doing nothing but visiting restaurants. Jake's directors speaks volumes about some of his goals and ambitions and I really like it. I do like to squee too :D
I have no desire to see Jake becoming a teenybopper star with all of that hysteria - absolutely none at all. Jake has some very interesting fans and many of them are stayers. It's been a great six years for me, since falling for Jake with TDAT, I have learned so much and I'm now not the same person.
I do hope the date at the end of December sticks for us too, but I'm not so sure. I still worry about the release here. I'm trying not to. But when I do finally get to see it, it's gonna be incredible!!
