Jake Gyllenhaal in January's Total Film, on Charlie Rose and on Thanksgiving ('I'm super excited!')

Jake Gyllenhaal is interviewed (in a metaphysical career corridor) in the newly-published January 2011 issue of Total Film. It was conducted during Jake's 'man-mountain fuzz' period. You can read the interview below - just click on the scans and they shall be embiggened - but it's worth pulling out a couple of moments from the interview. Not least a perfect piece of GyllenSpeak about what it's like to live your life in the public eye.

'I don't think ignoring it is a bad thing!... You've got to plug your ears up and tie yourself to the mast and beg the people you love not to untie you. But I don't think anyone is immune to the oddities of those type of things.'

Nailed gets a mention and it's not good. 'It's been a really frustrating process with people who have somewhat dishonest in the process of creativity... It's just frozen. Right now, it's in the hands of people who are not letting it be seen.'

On the similarity and contrast between Donnie Darko and Source Code: 'I think Darko posed more questions than it answered. And this poses questions and answers them'.

On where Jake is in his career: 'But I am accumulating experience... I'm starting to turn green into some other colour... a little less green! Before I was searching and not I'm becoming clear about what I want to be involved in and who I want to be involved with.'

Jake, Anne Hathaway and Ed Zwick appeared on the rather formal and, at least on the surface, intimidating Charlie Rose last night. You can watch it in full here.

More interviews have been released to coincide with the film. Here are a few below. The first is from E-Block.

This interview is from CBS News.

Of course for some today is Thanksgiving (for many of the rest of us it's just a bloody cold Thursday that brought the first snow of the winter). At the end of this link is a CBS video in which Jake and Anne talk about their holiday plans and how 'super excited' Jake is about today. I hope he and all of you who celebrate are having a lovely day. I hope the rest of us aren't having it too bad either.

  1. Thanks for the news and all links yet again. Too bad about Nailed :( but even if it takes time we may be lucky.

Wanted to wish Jake a great Turkey day and all the rest of you friends across the Ocean too :)

Here it's not snowy or even cold, outside right now 20ยบ... plus that is :) Sending you some, WDW.

    Enjoy your evening!!!

  2. Very nice interviews. I loved when Jake he was super excited to spend time with his family. You could tell how happy he is. I remember he said he was going to brine the turkey. I've never had it that way. it would be interesting to be sitting at the Gyllenhaal table right now. I'm sure Atticus gets to have some turkey too. :D

I have to wonder if Nailed will ever see the light of day. It must be disappointing for Jake after all the hard work he put into it and have it sitting mothballed.

I wonder what is next on the agenda for him (aside from promoting SC in a few months)

    happy thanksgiving

  3. Hi Snow! Yes, Nailed could still happen - it's definitely one of those where we have to adopt the longterm view! Ooh, thank you for sending me some of that warmth! Bitterly cold here tonight. Thanks, and you too :D

I loved that bit, Sweetpea :) He's clearly thrilled to spend the time with his family. I hope we'll find out for sure what's next very soon.

  4. Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
We don't celebrate it over here, but it still is good to stop and be thankful for what we have.

Hi WDW. It's getting colder here as well.

  5. Hi Eureka! Hope you're having a good day. I'm wrapped up in a big blanket in my window seat looking at big frost. Ugh.

  6. Thanksgiving is not my holiday, but I really like the idea of it. It's so nice to have a special day to thank some people for the things happened during last year. I wish we had this kind of a day in Poland.
It's always good to thank, so I thank you WDW for all the good things you brought me in the past few months, for all the work you did for us. And I thank all of you, my fellow Jake's fans from all over the world for sharing our comments, thoughts, feelings here. It's been a pleasure.
And I thank you Jake, for everything, because you are the reason we are here, though you even don't know us.

I watched Charlie Rose show for the first time in my life. It was completely different from the others, very formal, more serious and even our stars behaved different. It was interesting.
I've just realised today that Ed Zwick is the director of one of my absolutely favourite movies - "Legends of the Fall"!
That article-interview from January's Total Film is very good.

  7. Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating.

It's so sad what happened to Nailed. I do not know, hopefully someone will solve this problem.

Happy to see him on Charlie Rose. I still remember that interview with Heath, who was one of the best. Jake should have been there, along with Heath.

I live in northern of Brazil, then do not have snow here, but it has a lot of rain. Today is a day of rain and it's cold.

  8. Hi Monica! I remember the Heath episode too - I'm so glad Jake's on there at last. It would have been wonderful to have seen Jake and Heath on there together. Just wonderful.

I hope the rain stops soon for you :)

  9. Hi Mermon! I missed your comment as it arrived at the same time! Thanks so much. We do indeed have so much to be thankful for - so many times here I've felt that. Charlie Rose is unusual - I find it an odd format - but very interesting. Great to see Jake in Total Film!

  10. What a packed post! :) Thanks a lot, WDW!

We've had our first snow today (including massive traffic jams, MEH) so I'm gonna make a cup of tea, cuddle up in a corner of the couch with my laptop on my lap and enjoy the goodies. Yum! I'm particularly looking forward to the Charlie Rose interview. He has done some amazing interviews in the past with other actors I admire.

Hope everyone is having a beautiful day with Thanksgiving in America! :)

  11. Ooh wrap up Lady Ekster! I have a long drive ahead of me this weekend (both days) so it'd better improve. Glad you liked the post - enjoy the vids!

  12. Hello WDW and everybody

A rich post, WDW, thank you so much.

Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends, hope it is a good one.

Just as you are getting cold up there, our summer weather and humidity arrive in late November here in NZ. Like Snow, we have 20 plus degrees today.

    Stay warm you northeners.

Love the barefeet, tight suit trousers pics in the previous post. Seeing them rather distracted me from my work day!:)

    Cheers

    Tui

  13. Hello Tui over there in the summer! I'm so glad you liked the post :) I'm not a fan of feet one little bit but Jake's are almost bearable ;-)

  14. Charlie Rose was such a wonderful interview. There is something about his interviews that I always like. Away from the questions that everybody else asks and into the depth and the thoughts behind the actions. Into the actor's minds, as it were. Loved it. Love the chemistry between the three of them, and then those looks and jokes between Jake and Anne... so, so cute.

Chemistry = getting off on each other intellectually. I like that! :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ehr... that had to be mind instead of minds, of course. I didn't mean to say that people have more than one brain. *grin*

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lady: "Chemistry = getting off on each other intellectually." Robin Williams once called that "giving good mind", LOL.

Three words for NAILED: Direct to video! That would be fine with me!

  17. I just love the way JG talks and expresses his ideas. Its always very rich. so cultured, carefully thought over and said. Also he is one of the best dressed actor I've seen in Hollywood. Always. I love him so much. Kaushi

  18. Good morning everyone! I hope everyone had a good day yesterday - if having a holiday or just having a day! Friday!

Morning Lady Ekster :D There really is chemistry between Jake and Anne and Ed - the three of them. I'm expecting chemistry with Duncan too.

That would work for me too, Gyllenhaalisg8! Not giving up hope...

Hi Kaushi and welcome! Jake really does express himself in such a stylish and classy way. A 'true' filmstar. Thanks for commenting.

    Have a good day everyone!

  19. A Special Shout Out to the many people here who have asked about the music that is played in LAOD. I couldn't give any details after my first two viewings other than saying what is NOT in it from the trailer. Well I'm happy to report that after 3 viewings I now can tell you 3 songs for sure. I'm going to viewing number four tonight so maybe I'll pick up on something else. I will say this...and for those who have seen it once or twice tell me if you agree...it is nearly impossible to remember what music is playing when Jake and Anne are on the screen as Jamie and Maggie. It's all like a drug (a good one). Seriously.

Okay...here are the 3 songs I remember (sorry for links you need to copy and paste - if someone wants to re-post these somewhere in better form please do so):

Billy Bragg - "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqFmNUz7WhY

The Kinks - "A Well Respected Man"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwpW-8uM4fA

Bob Dylan - "Standing in the Doorway" (the version below has a long intro – lyrics start around 1:30)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOooY4ZMJgg

All these songs are great and placed well in the film (IMHO) especially the version of Way Over Yonder.

There is a fourth song that pops up two or three times but the only part of the song they play is a woman humming with a little music. It is quite moving and usually placed during serious close-ups but without more to the audio clip I can't tell who or what it is. Any other LAOD viewers know the one I'm talking about??

Anyway, hope this is of interest to some (it may be just rambling to others)!!

Thanks, WDW, for keeping the huge amount of LAOD stuff coming and coming! It's all been great and I look forward to getting back to reading the many interviews (it's hard enough just keeping up with the many videos - but I'm not complaining)!

And thanks to the many non-Americans wishing us Americans a happy holiday - mine was great. Back to the movie theater soon for me!

    Until next time... :-)

  20. I have a delicate question, there ws no frontal nudity of Jake in LAOD was there? I know I couldn't have missed that.

  21. I saw "Love and other Drugs" on Wednesday. Jake and Anne have undeniable screen chemistry. As Anne becomes a *major* film star, this will be a film that fans go back to again and again. I thought I caught tiny traces of Jack Twist in Jake's characterization.

Much of the time, Jamie Randall is so hyper you wonder how many gallons of coffee he has drunk just before filming. :-) There's also a cute scene where he goes into ahospital emergency room and tells the receptionist that he's having a bad drug [Viagra] reaction. When the receptionist asks where it hurts, he points. ;-)

  22. Been too tired to comment! Really physically tired. But now that I can feel my arms again, I'd like to use my fingers to type a huge THANK YOU for the Total Film scans.

Such a great interview. So much there that made me emotional. "Disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed", for instance: that's true wisdom right there.

Great post, WDW. I can never thank you enough for your hard work. :-)

  23. Hi!
@BBMISwear - thank you so much for those three songs from the soundtrack. I've never heard them before. Were they popular in USA in 90'? Actually, mhm, I don't like them too much, but as you said - if they go well with action and create right atmosphere - that's fine.
I'm looking forward for the other ones after your fourth movie watching :)
It's so optimistic that you want to watch it so many times. That means it's really good.

@Paulh said - "I thought I caught tiny traces of Jack Twist in Jake's characterization." - I will look for that when I'll have a chance to see the movie. It would be lovely to find a piece of Jack again. Maybe next time we will search for traces of Jamie in the next movies:).

  24. Hello! Just got back in after a lovely evening out in the freezing cold - gonna sit and shiver for a bit...

Hi BBMISwear :-) Thanks for the update on the songs! It is such a great soundtrack, it really is, even though IMO this was not a good time for music.

    Hi 17:58! The answer's nope :D

Hey there Paul! Glad you enjoyed it - I'll be glad when at long last I can post my review!

Thanks Alejandra - I hope you're feeling much better :) Do take it easy.

Hi Mermon! I agree with Paul. Little bits of Jake and Jamie reminded me of Jack too :)
