Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine to go on a Disney Double Date Into the Woods? And Marvel rumours

The deal might not be done and dusted yet but, all going well, Jake Gyllenhaal will at last get that musical role that he's wanted for years. Hollywood Reporter informs us that Jake and Chris 'Spock! Spock!' Pine are in negotiations to appear as princely brothers in Disney's adaptation of Into the Woods, a Broadway musical. Both Jake and Chris have sung for the very lucky and fortunate director Rob Marshall and, not surprisingly, are expected to receive offers soon.

Several things to note here. Jake would play the handsome prince who falls for Cinderella and manages to make her give up her life as scullery maid and slave to a wicked stepmother and persuades her to abandon her mouse friends in favour of a life of love and indulgence in a spaceship. Chris T Pine will seduce Rapunzel away from her alien hairy planet of heartache and knots and promise her a new life beside him on the bridge. Admittedly, I would set this in space, given the chance. Not in woods.

The title is a little worrying - Into the Woods. Does this mean that it's not Jake who will be hired but his hairy twin, Sasquatch?

This role would also give Jake the opportunity to play against his Rendition-co-star-by-phone again, Meryl Streep, who gets the prize witch role. Johnny Depp will play a hungry, sexy wolf (there are several things up with that sentence). Jake and Chris will be 'brothers who are pompous and self-absorbed'.

Full details here. I knew that all those pop videos would pay off in the end...

All in all, this project sounds like a lot of fun for Jake and us alike, not least because Jake may have screen, even singing, time with Chris Pine who is Captain Kirk and that, for me, is swoonworthy. It doesn't sound like a big role for Jake so its filming date in the autumn would probably fit in well with Nightcrawlers which also has a start date around then and the completion, presumably, of Mississippi Grind. Jake was filmed boarding a private helicopter in NYC on 12 May (see photos) and while it can only be speculation it is possible that this was related to MG filming.

All of which sounds a lot more promising and exciting than the tweet that Jake met with Marvel this week with the associated rumours and murmurings that this may be something to do with Iron Man or Ant-Man (Edgar Wright's movie planned for 2015). My bets are hedged.

Thanks very much to IHJ for the new photos!

  1. Hello everyone! I love this news! I am a huge fan of Chris Pine and seeing him and Jake on screen together would be fantastic. This whole project sounds like so much fun and i could be well done. At last a musical... So fingers crossed!

I wonder if Jake as off for MG filming duties....

    Have a good evening!

  2. Mississippi Grind was supposed to film in New Orleans. I think Jake has been spotted three or four times in Los Angeles yesterday and today. I hope he is there because of MG or this new musical, or maybe even some other movies he will do that we don't know about yet.

  3. Hi 20:34! It does seem odd to go by private helicopter from NYC to LA so maybe he was off doing something else! Very intriguing. Hopefully these LA visits bode well on the film front as you say! Thanks for the news on the LA visits :)

  4. Very exciting news, indeed! We wanted to see Jake in a musical since long time. Let's hope that casting went well. Jake and Chris Pine supposed to be brothers and on some pictures they look a bit similar.
I thought that Jake's professional life is packed very much already, but as we see it's still a room for new projects.
Mystery helicopter tour is still nor clear yet. It could be business or a private trip with friends.

  5. Yeeeeeeeeeeees, it's nice that Jake is involved in so many various projects these days. That means my much cherished DVD-Gyllenhall-collection (Kate, you'd probably call it the "Gyllencollection") is getting larger all the time.

  6. I'm SO excited about the Disney project - hope he gets the part - he'd be perfect for it :-)

Re LA, there are photos of him in his Audi Q5 in LA - a car I'd like, in black too ;-)

  7. Hello, dear Amanda!
Yep, Jakey as a prince yet again. That's lovely!
    ;-)
PS: I've discovered the Jake-back-in-Los-Angeles-driving-his-huge-posh-Audi-pics as well. Where's Atticus? Jake has been away from LA for over a year now and Atticus was never seen with him in NYC. Hope Jake and his doggie haven't gotten estranged.

  8. Oops, not Q5, it's a Q7 ;-)

I was thinking about Atticus too, he must be quite elderly, wonder if he's passed on ? :-(

  9. I've found all the latest news very exiting as well. In truth my head is spinning with so much movie news for Jake...lots and lots of upcoming projects and/or rumors for upcoming projects...just the way we like it! And all this just ahead of promotion to come for 2 already filmed movies. We are getting spoiled (no complaints, however)!

The musical sounds interesting but I think I would have preferred Damn Yankees over this (the one we heard so much about years ago). We'll see what happens I guess! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yes, Damn Yankees would be a real treat, but I suppose since fairy tale themes are so popular now it was inevitable that Into the Woods will be movie-ized. At least it will be an opportunity for Jake to demonstrate his incredible versatility and maybe open the door to a few lighter, comedic roles along with all the dark, brooding characters.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hello everyone! And the news is that now Emily Blunt may be in it too (presumably as one of the Disney princesses), rather like that. I wonder if she gets to choose...

Thanks, BBMISwear, for the reminder about Damn Yankees :-) I do wonder what happened to that. No funding, perhaps. I also wonder if Jake still has hopes for it. But this could be a good step for Jake even though it sounds like a small role.

    I hope you're having a good weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Exactly what I was thinking about the possible Into the Woods role - TOO SMALL!!! I absolutely would love him to be in a musical but want him to be in the lead or at least be sharing the lead (not just singing a song or two) which I think would have been the case if Damn Yankees panned out. Oh well...not nice to be greedy I guess! And with so many possible and probable things going on for him in the fall maybe a song or two is all he'll be able to fit in anyway. We'll have to be patient!

Speaking of patient...I would love some concrete info on An Enemy...talk about a film with almost no buzz at all...jeez.

    Have a good Monday! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  13. :-) We're just impatient, that's all!
    And too greedy, yes!

Now, where's 'Nailed'? I want it now!

And what's Damn Yakees? I must have missed that one!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hi girls!
We cannot be too greedy and too impatient when it comes to new Jake-movie-projects, can we??
    ;-)

PS: Right at the moment LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS is being aired on one of our German TV channels. Okaaaay, there have been better Jake-films, but stil he's incredibly ... sexy, charming, edible with all his clothes off an on.

  15. Love and Other Drugs was the second of Jake's films I watched - I'd seen Prince of Persia several times and was in love with it - I was very wary about watching LAOD because of this, I was worried I would go off Jake ! (as if!!) I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't quite what I expected, but of course, it didn't put me off Jake, and I soon grew to like the film, I realised it was Anne's character I didn't much like. LOL!

  16. Hi Amanda!
Guess which film it is I think Jake is most sexy in??
It's not LAOD (even though the sight of his lovely smile and muscles makes you want to swoooooooooooooooooooooon several times)
My definite favourite is BROTHERS! Yes! Remember the Uncle-Tommy-wake-up-scene when one of the little nieces is whisking the pancake batter and her poor uncle with the enormous hangover is lolling on the family sofa, asking her to stop making this horrible noise and she refuses?
Can't help it, THIS IS THE SCENE of all the films he has been in so far I think Jake Gyllenhaal is the sexiest.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hi Antje

I shall have to watch Brothers again, seen it only once so far. I think Jake is sexiest in Brokeback Mountain, but for me he VERY hot in Rendition and as Prince Dastan. There are a few of Jake's films I've seen only once so far (probably cos they are my least favourite) - Moonlight Mile, Highway, Brothers and Zodiac - I guess I need to give them another chance :-)

  18. @Amanda
    Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaah, Jake's sexiness in BROKEBACK!!!!
I guess I cannot write it often enough that I feel Jake is sexy in every single scene he's in there. Even the scene when "Jack" is looking for his parka in "Lureen's" study and they argue once again I think Jake looks terrific - with the huge artificial 1970s side whiskers (or "sideburns" for all the Americans who read my post) which the make-up artist "glued" on his temples.
    ;-)

  19. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like LAOD very much. Jake has amazing chemistry with Anne, but, as a movie, LAOD has too many flaws. Jamies brother Josh is hugely irritating, to say the least. It focuses too much on the sex... which isn't a bad thing as far as Jake is concerned, but the story itself is somewhat weak.

Brokeback is THE ultimate movie of course. Jake will forever be Jack Twist. I love Jack from the first moment he's onscreen until the last! Brokeback is EPIC!

Love, love, love Jake in 'Brothers', too. My second favorite Jake movie. Third, for me, is 'End of Watch'.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Not sure about End of Watch, it's another one I've seen only once so far.
    Amanda

  21. Yay, girls, talking about which is our fav Jake movie ever, here's my personal TOP THREE

    1) BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
I guess I do not have to explain why. Seems it is everybody's favourite Jake-film anyway, isn't it?

    2) JARHEAD
This anti-war-film is so, so, sooo moving and Jake's performance is outstanding. I also read Anthony Swofford's tragic autobiography the film is based on. What we are presented with in the film is even more tragic!

    3) BROTHERS
Performance is mesmerizing. Again an anti-war-film. This time with a sexy, helpless brother.

And I also have a weak spot for Jake's performance in MOONLIGHT MILE, DONNIE DARKO (both versions), RENDITION, THE GOOD GIRL, OCTOBER SKY, END OF WATCH and, believe it or not, BUBBLE BOY. The latter was "killed" by the critics in 2001, but I do love the cruel mocking of the bad aspects of the "American Way Of Life". And Jake was still sooooooo young when he did the movie, barely out of his teens and still with a boyish voice and not a lot of hair on his cheeks.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Bubble Boy surprised me, I was afraid I'd cringe and hate it, but I loved Jake's catching enthusiasm and joyous performance! And I just LOVE the ending, those pants!LOL!
    Amanda

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've watched 'Bubble Boy' online (it's on YouTube), because I also had my doubts about the movie ;-), but I enjoyed it so much!
Jake is so lovable as Jimmy! I intend to buy the DVD soon (eBay, here I come!)

    Haven't seen 'October Sky' yet.

    P.S.: 'Highway', anyone?! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Amanda
Yes, the underwear at the end of BUBBLE BOY is ... unbelievable. But so is Jake's hairdo throughout the whole film.

    @Sonja
HIGHWAY is the only Jake-film I have not seen yet. :-((
By the way, I even love CITY SLICKERS. The classroom scene with little Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy Crystal's son ... mmmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
And you can even tell thart it actually IS Jacob Benjamin "Jake" Gyllenhaal.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Sonja

October Sky is wonderful, one of my faves. Jake was the 'shape of things to come' :-)

Highway - not my sort of film , don't like drug-feuld-road-movies at the best of times, but of course one must see it for Jake, and he's cute as always :-)

Antje, I love Jakes hair! So was wary of Jarhead and End of Watch....But did actually quite like Jarhead, although not my sort of film, it was directed by Sam 'Skyfall' Mendes, so actually quite interesting and I love the burning oil wells scene - so Sam Mendes :-)

  26. Girls!
Jake Gyllenhaal is such a gifted actor and I'm so interested in following his career that I would want to watch ANY film he's in. There is a least ONE certain something in each of his films, even the not so good ones. I even liked his acting in THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, even though the film and its topic are awful and not very nice to look at. But do you remember the plane scene, when young "Sam" struggles with his fear of flying? So sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I know what you mean, Antje. Take 'End of Watch' for instance. I'm not into cop movies at all, but when I watched it, I enjoyed it far, far more than I ever thought I would.

Same goes for 'Jarhead'. It's not my kind of movie, but Jake gives a great performance. The scene with the horse... did anyone notice he says "It's all right" the same way he says it to Ennis in BBM? Or is it just me? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, I love that tender scene with the horse, so sweet :-)
I agree, I will watch anything with Jake in - he always shows his tender side somewhere even in Jarhead :-)
    Amanda

    ReplyDelete
  29. Jake Gyllenhaal showing his tender side in his films - no matter what the topic/plot/genre is??
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeees, that's probably what makes him such a good actor. No formal training at a drama school, still he understands 100 percent what classic performing art is all about.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks so much, all of you, for such a wonderful conversation. I must stick my oar in and say that I love Bubble Boy. It makes me laugh so much. Really love the commentary.

As for most sexy, that'll be Jack Twist packing up the tent on the mountain.

Interesting to hear opinions on the movies. I love parts of LAOD but I still don't think it works as a whole. End of Watch is far too violent for me so unfortunately that's one I don't rewatch. Just as well there are others I do!

    I hope you're having a good evening!

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Sonja
Have just put in the JARHEAD-DVD to watch the horse-scene.
Yep, it's the same line as in BROKEBACK, "It's all right, it's all right."
And just as tender and moving.

  32. @Antje:
    :-)

When I first saw that scene, I was like: "He said it again! He said it again!!!" :-)
    I know... I'm nuts. It's official now! :-)

Most sexy (and not being Jack Twist) - let me think... I think his first scene in 'Rendition' is very sexy. The way he kisses his girl in the bathroom... wow.
And the way he says: "Who are you talking to?" in that sexy voice.
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ohhh, girls, it's just soooooooooooooo lovely the way we are all swooning everytime we discuss Jakey's sexiness on film.
Maybe he's reading all this, too. Who knows?!!??? And blushes while reading it.

Dear Sonja, yup, the bathroom scene in RENDITION is just another example how charming Mr Gyllenhaal is.

  34. My favourites are:
    Brokeback mountain
    Jarhead
    Brothers

The only movie I didn't like was LAOD.

Great new photos of Jake riding a bike on Iheartjake.

  37. Ohhh, the Jake-freshly-shorn-riding-his-bike-in-NYC-pics!!
    BUT:
You can tell by his face how much he hates being photographed by this nerve-racking paparazzo. He just does not WANT it!!!! He very clearly wants to be left alone - just this once!!!!! And rightly so.
That's why I'm not interested in these shots.

    ReplyDelete
  38. No beard! Yes!!!! *a huge sigh of relief* Bless you, Jake!
I saw the same pics on the Ultimate Brokeback Forum (a.k.a. Dave Cullen) already.

I don't know... everytime I watch these kind of pictures, I feel like an intruder.
To be photographed everywhere - when (in this case) you're cycling, or swimming or surfing... Poor Jake.

It must be horrible to be famous, you know. I wouldn't want to trade places with ANY celebrity at all.

    ReplyDelete
  39. P.S.
'Jarhead' seems to be a huge favourite here. That's intriguing! I must re-watch it soon! :-)

@Maria: on LAOD: you didn't like it at all? Not even Jake's ehm... sexiness? :-)
LAOD is too unbalanced IMO. The love scenes with Anne Hathaway are sexy, but other scenes are way too much over the top, like the scene where Jamie has used Viagra - I cringe everytime I watch it.
It's funny that LOAD seems to mean a lot to Jake personally. Maybe he was thrilled to work with Anne again? Some of the LOAD interviews on YouTube are hilarious, there's a lot of banter between them.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Regarding LAOD, I found it a tad manic at first, typically American (Sorry ;-)) and rather brash, but I guess I was shell shocked seeing Jake after only ever having watched PoP! :-). As for Jarhead, all that swearing and yuk stuff (charred bodies) is too much for me, but Jake is good I have to admit and WHAT a body! It just amazes me the film is the same year as Brokeback and Proof - three VERY different films - amazing Jake to pull them off :-)
    Amanda

    ReplyDelete
  41. @sonja, I liked how sexy he was in the movie. But it wasn't funny or interesting, a weak story. Over the top. Too bad! His body in the movie was great though.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hello everyone! Loving the sexy Jake conversation. Interesting to see the different reactions to LAOD. I do agree with Sonja - I think it's unbalanced too and does suffer from being torn in different directions. I adore the opening to it.

I've been looking at the pap photos, great to see Jake looking so shorn and cycly again! A big improvement on the smoking beardy pics.

Hope you're all having a good evening!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love that little scene in the opening of LAOD with the older woman, where he goes "Go Joan, go Joan". :-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. You bad girls, you made me do it - all this talk of LAOD, I just had to watch it this evening :-)

Yes, the opening scenes are the best, I love Joan /Jake scene too!

  45. We made you feel like you HAD to watch it, Amanda? Oops. Sorry! It won't happen again ;-)
    :-))))

And please, stop talking about 'Jarhead', or else I'll have to force myself to watch it! Oh, that Santa hat dance... ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh yes the Xmas hat - love it :-)!
Going back to LAOD - has any of my Brit sisters noticed some of the theme tune is VERY similar to Doc Martin. (of course you will only know what I mean if you watch Doc Martin) I suggest anyone who has absolutely no idea what I'm wittering on about to Poo Tube it and see what I mean ;-) LOL
