Bringing fantasy and art together for the Prince of Persia - the countdown begins

Unless you've been lost in the deepest desert, in which case you have an excuse, you'll have realised Jake Gyllenhaal is back in Los Angeles this weekend, having a well-earned break from the nigh on interminable shoot that is the Prince of Persia. IHJ now has all the pictures and thanks to them for that.

Nevertheless, with batteries recharged, Jake will no doubt be returning to the set soon, in order to finish saving the world at the last possible second. Even though the film will not be released until May 2010, the powers that be will make sure that we are on the edges of our seat long before then. According to this site, it is very likely that a behind the scenes feature on the Prince of Persia, complete with interviews with Jake and the other stars, will air shortly on TV.

Continuing the PoP theme, all this is coinciding with the highly anticipated new Prince of Persia game. In this video, the developers of the game discuss their vision of the prince in his environment and how reality, fantasy, fairy tale and art are merged in order to transport us into another world. Although this relates specifically to the game and not to the film it has inspired, it seems to me that the principles will be the same for both, and the beauty and the attention to detail will translate to the big screen. The similarities between the game and movie princes aren't coincidental, I'm sure.

For further video interviews with the developers, in which they discuss the Prince, his helper, his powers, and the darkness he faces and the light his brings, visit this site for some fascinating background to the whole adventure. It's a happy thought knowing that they're ensuring that the Prince has as many pixels as possible.

Nailed?

This December, the cover girl for the UK edition of Marie Claire is Jessica Biel and we are promised that she will be discussing her future roles. The extracts I've seen make no mention of Nailed but who knows what will be found in the full interview?

H&M Maggie

Maggie has been making her presence felt at another fashion event - on Thursday, Maggie attended the Comme des Garçons event for H&M at Espace, New York, where her own fashion attracted some attention.

Free City Jake and Reese out for a Santa Monica breakfast - Thursday 23 October

The Jake Gyllenhaal drought is over with a deluge... So that's why Jake and Reese went jogging with their friends on Thursday - they had a breakfast to run off. Here are Jake and Reese out and about on Thursday morning, with Jake wearing another spectacular jumper (my excitement at his Free City hoodie is intensified because I have that hoodie, but in blue).

Jake Gyllenhaal out with Deacon and Reese, 24 October

With many thanks to Stephanie at IHJ, here are a couple of cuties:

Jake and Reese were out with Deacon in Brentwood yesterday. Jake's also found his aviators again... (I want that Nike top.)

Out for a run - Jake and Reese 23 October

Well, I was hoping for some new pictures this weekend and here we are already! Here are Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon out for a run on Thursday. And we have hair! So what do we think of the headband? I'll have ten! Loving the t-shirt, by the way.

Making a date to party with Jake Gyllenhaal

While we sit and wait patiently/impatiently (delete as appropriate) for Jake to emerge in his familiar LA haunts - after he's got over the jetlag, caught up on household chores, watched those recorded TV shows and skimmed through several months of home improvement and cookery magazines, which he forgot to cancel during his absence - it appears Gyllenhaalism is not confined to the unfamous. The lovely and very young Ashley Tisdale told morning TV today that, if she could turn back the sands of time and have her prom all over again, she would go with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Clearly, this girl has taste and, although her movie is all about High School Musicals and although proms are not an overly familiar concept to Brits (I always thought a prom was something you walked along at the beach), nevertheless I am delighted to hear Jake's name spoken in such a context. I definitely agree that if you need a prom date then you need look no further than Jake. In fact, if you want to go to any kind of party, Jake is your ideal choice.

Part of the job of being an international movie star and heart throb is that, now and again, you have to go to a party. As Jake told TRL last year, celebrities cancel each other out at such events. Jake is fortunate because he can always take along his similarly famous sister and brother-in-law. As an example, here is a video of Jake, Maggie and Peter arriving at the Vanity Fair party back in 2005. Hair was optional in the dress code.

While at the Toronto Film Festival, back in the days of Moonlight Mile and Secretary ('aka the spanking movie'), Jake and Maggie decided not to participate in the party round: 'Maggie Gyllenhaal, the star of ''The Secretary,'' a story about a sadomasochistic relationship, had a series of PG-rated evenings watching television with her brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, himself an emerging star in several current films, at his hotel room. And James Spader, who plays Ms. Gyllenhaal's boss in ''The Secretary,'' a k a ''the spanking movie,'' spent similar low-key time buying groceries at Whole Foods.' I have to say that watching TV with Jake in his hotel room would definitely rank higher up my list of things to do than shopping at Whole Foods, despite the store's admirable displays of fresh, seasonal produce and local wines.

Of course, there is another type of party, and the Creative Coalition, an organisation in which Maggie has been involved during this electoral marathon, 'announced publicly this week that they are busily making arrangements for its fabulous nonpartisan presidential inaugural celebration - even though the race for the White House is still on.' This party will take place on 20 January in Washington and the names of Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard could appear on the dancing cards of the fortunate. The fabulous Susan Sarandon will also be attending.

Talking of parties, Maggie was the guest on West 14th Street, NYC, this week at the 'opening of the Hugo Boss Concept Store on Wednesday night marking the first time, and the only location, where you can find all four BOSS sub-lines under one roof (under one ultra-cool wooden caged roof we might add). Not only is the store a looker, but it’s also technically savy with lighting effects that adjust to the current weather and time of day… Seriously.' This sounds like quite an event and there were some great pictures taken of Maggie with Brooke Shields and Mena Suvari.

Introducing Jake Gyllenhaal - and PoP to have more than 'exploding horses'

So, it turns out that there's another way to attract the attention of Jake Gyllenhaal - form a band, get on TV and have Jake introduce you - before you know it, you're friends for life (well, for the length of an award show, which can feel as long). With big thanks to the lovely Xenia, here is a video of Jake introducing lucky Avril Lavigne during TRL 2004.

Also in 2004, Jake was a presenter on the MTV movie awards alongside Scarlett Johansson and their job was to introduce the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Jake and Scarlett were themselves introduced by Lindsey Lohan.

Moving along to 2007, Jake was back on TRL to introduce a host of bands, but not Celine Dion.

On SNL in January 2007 it was the turn of the Shin Shins...

Jake appears on TRL every three years, we therefore have a couple left in which to form The Next Big Thing. With any luck we may get Jake involved.

And finally...

Jordan Mechner has been talking to Entertainment Weekly about the movie adaptation of his creation Prince of Persia. Jordan says that he had only one requirement for the film: 'This goes all the way back to the original 1989 game: somewhere in the story, there has to be an hourglass.' Which, if you have a film about sands of time, is a reasonable request.

I was also struck by this quote 'For a movie, it's all about the story. No matter how spectacular, the action is only gripping if it's happening to characters we care about. Otherwise, in the midst of all the Dolby fireworks and exploding horses, we'll start to get that restless feeling... you know, wishing we had our ten bucks back and that we were back home playing a video game.' Exploding horses? What kind of a film is this?
