Jake Gyllenhaal gets some attention - the difference a day makes

When Jake Gyllenhaal walks past you in the street, the last thing you're going to worry about is traffic. While not ruling out entirely that this lady's lippy Jake Reaction may have been caused by the sight of the Legendary Postcard T-shirt, it's fair to say that Jake looks extraordinarily hot here. Note how I'm not mentioning that Teh Shirt is a sore reminder of the fact that we have no post in the UK at the moment. Many thanks to IHJ for the wonderful new old pics!

The pictures above were taken on October 6 2004. Who would have thought that on the very next day the famous Schoolboy Jake photographs would be taken? Nevertheless, Jake's powers of hotness persisted, as demonstrated by the insistence of Clog Lady to hug Jake at every opportunity. Maybe he'd just given her an apple...

Thanks to IHJ for the pictures.

Details here! So.... what do we want to know?

On with the post...

When one is confronted with Jake Gyllenhaal, it's not always easy to know what to say on that spur of the moment - at least something that doesn't make you sound like a less evolved primate. However, one lucky person who happened to rent her Pittsburgh home out for Love and Other Drugs did a very good job: 'Jake, you sure are handsome'. To the point, accurate and objective. Another person went possibly too far down the objective path: 'He's a human being'.

Ed Zwick, the director of Love and Other Drugs, has been talking about the production to a local paper and they seem to have spent quite a day on the set. But do we get a picture of Jake Gyllenhaal clad in white doctor's coat, stethoscope round muscular neck, cranking charming smiles with well-considered reckless abandonment? No, we get a picture of Ed Zwick. No disrespect to Ed, I love to see pictures of him, but I get a sense that he's torturing me with hiding Jake just out of sight of those camera lenses.

It's a great feature though, full of insights into Jamie's character, the story, the process of filming and of the role of Pittsburgh in the movie. More to the point, we also get confirmation that Atticus is on set - whether he has a speaking role is still not known.

More info: 'The movie, from Fox 2000 Pictures and New Regency Productions, is scheduled for release some time in 2010. Although characterized as a romantic comedy, "Love" has more meat and less froth than most films in that category... "It does talk about the pharmaceutical industry with some insight and some penetrating understanding," Zwick said during a break in filming. "It also has elements of a relationship that are more serious and dimensional than just the basic romantic comedy but it's also very funny and very romantic." Gyllenhaal and Hathaway played an unhappily married couple in "Brokeback Mountain" but their relationship here is charged with attraction and passion. "When you see what they have together, that is the heart and soul of the movie," Zwick said. "So chemistry is an elusive thing, in real life as in movies, but you do know it when you see it and know it when you have it." Hathaway, who started filming this week, did her homework about Parkinson's. "She's that kind of actor, as all the good ones are," Zwick said, doing lots of reading and spending time with neurologists and patients.'

You can read the full article here. Ed Zwick may not be giving us Jake pics, but we are very lucky to have IHJ keeping us watered through the drought with new old pictures. The ones featured in this post are from a press conference for The Good Girl.

An Education at LFF

While I'm still waiting for Peter Sarsgaard's sicknote, telling us why he wished to be excused from the British premiere of An Education, it's a grand enough occasion, a good enough movie, for his absence to be pardoned - with approximately 650,000 lines 'They made me do it'. It was an enjoyable red carpet, largely thanks to Winterbird, but the LFF organisers did manage to make everyone with a ticket feel a little bit like cattle off to slaughter. Free chocolate helped this feeling to pass but things did get a little heated despite the cold air temperatures.

You can see a video of the red carpet here, plus some proper pictures.

And a refresher of back to April 2008 when I came across Carey Mulligan and Rosamund Pike squeezed between Oxford's colleges, plus a certain Peter Sarsgaard.

Fact! Jake Gyllenhaal is better looking than your average Moon Watcher - and WDW's Captain Jack encounter

Doug Liman has been talking to the ninjas again (how I love these ninjas), providing further insider information on the whereabouts of The Moon Project. Last week, Doug was invited to a Moon Party to watch NASA's rocket attack on the other moon, the named one. And when the rockets failed to produce any kind of dust cloud that was visible more than 10 foot off the surface, Doug resorted to the next best thing - Moon Watcher Watching. Doug's conclusion? Jake Gyllenhaal is better looking than your average moon watcher. Obviously, no disrespect to your average moon watcher is intended here - it's simply Physics.

So... what have we learned from Doug today? Firstly, his work in progress - the Moon Budget - is 350 pages long, suggesting that firing rockets into the moon may actually be cheaper. Secondly, Jake Gyllenhaal may have outshone everyone in the room but he would still have looked at home there, thereby combining hot and geek; a tried, tested and much loved combination in Jake's acting repertoire. Thirdly, things have moved on from the original script. Jake is no longer the mad scientist, he is now the controller.

'Jake isn’t playing the hardcore scientist of the movie; he’s the mastermind. He is using the hardcore scientist in a way, like I am using the physicist at Columbia to research my movie. I realize that I’m saying that I’m the Jake in this scenario, but that’s the way it is. I identify with a character in all of my movies. Sometimes more than one — they’re different sides of me. In Mr. & Mrs Smith, it was John Smith. And when Jez Butterworth (the writer of Fair Game) read Moon, he pointed out massive similarities between the Jake Gyllenhaal character breaking all the rules to complete his mission and basically how I put together my movies. Which actually makes me feel better about the movie, because I think that when you do a big epic story, if you cannot ground it in something really personal, it becomes sort of meaningless fluff.'

Fourthly, the good news is that the whole moon watching event inspired Doug and hopefully brought us a little closer to meeting this new and deeply fascinating Jake character. Doug clearly wants this project, so close to his heart, to do the right thing. More with the ninjas.

As for Jake on Earth, it's not been that easy pinning him down (metaphorically speaking). Tweets have placed him in various Californian locations this weekend - mostly in places associated with food. However, today, the Pittsburgh Tweeters are back and Jake has been seen filming. Someone also commented that pictures were not allowed and security was tight. I continue to live in hope.

Back to the moon - kind of. Well, science fiction - sort of. Over the last few days I've done rather well in my stumbling across famous people while trying to find a coffee act. Today, I came across that well-known time traveller who chose to settle in Cardiff - Captain Jack - aka John Barrowman. The downside was the John Barrowman album that was playing in the background the entire time, but the upside was that John was charming and rather lovely, reminding me of the last time I saw him - at the BAFTAs 2007 when he was hosting a show from opposite us on the red carpet. John also, of course, happily competes with Jake for the upper reaches of the AfterElton hot poll. I did manage to get some pictures despite the enormous crowds.

Barrowman pics past and present by WDW. Many thanks to IHJ for the new old pics of Jake from the Today Show back in 2007, as a result of which you're spared more Clangers videos.

The GyllenFlirt Guide, Case Study 1 - Penelope Cruz

In years to come, social commentators will look back on Jake Gyllenhaal's illustrious career and remember how he redefined the art of flirtation, so much so that flirtation was respelt G-Y-L-L-E-N-H-A-A-L. A case study that is well-established on the flirting curriculum is the Jake/Penelope Scenario - this scenario usually takes place at award ceremonies.

Points to note for anyone interested in perfecting their own flirting technique: 1) dimples; 2) a firm squeeze 3) animated hands 4) a cumbersome award or a glass need not be a hindrance in the right hands.

Jennifer Aniston is also extremely adept at incorporating an award into the flirting act.

Public occasions provide the perfect setting for a flirtatious display. It can extend beyond the stage to backstage and onto the red carpet.

Jake will always be on the look out for a flirty opportunity.

While it is worth pointing out that a glamorous frock and a well-fitted suit are an advantage for optimised flirtation, they are by no means essential. Jake Gyllenhaal has honed the technique to such great lengths that he is triumphantly flirty even in extreme outdoor protective clothing and goggles. Obviously, Jake is a master and this should not be tried at home.

Many thanks to IHJ for the new old pictures!

Half of Travis wants to know which Jake is hottest, a bunch of polls, Dr P opens in the UK and Bubbles

Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop (aka half of Travis) are continuing their On The Road musical tour of the US and have now reached Austin, Texas. Songs are only part of the story, the rest comprises chat, anecdotes, slideshows and those all-important questions, turning what is ostensibly a gig into an admirable scientific survey of which Jake Gyllenhaal is hotter.

'There aren’t too many performers who take time out from their “het parade” to go to the slide projector and poll the audience on whether they prefer the musclebound Jake Gyllenhaal (click) to the more slimmed-down Jake (click). But this was that kind of silly and satisfying show.' A full report - with translation from the Scots - here.

No doubt Travis (or at least half of Travis) would be very interested in Empire's newly released poll of the 100 Sexiest Movie Stars (Men). Disgracefully, Jake Gyllenhaal was only 16th (surely because a computer somewhere can't count) but one could argue that this is not bad going for a megahot actor who's set a new trend for movie delays. For once, a poll site has chosen a hot picture of Jake. It is therefore curious that some people, in the vote at the bottom of Jake's page, want him further down the list and not up. So vote, dear WDW readers, vote! Johnny Depp tops the poll and the pale and not very interesting Robert Pattinson is unbelievably No 2.

In a week where many people will finally get to see Doctor Parnassus, it's good to see that Heath Ledger is also on the list - at No 14. To mark the UK release this weekend, there is a new poster and a new website.

Half of Travis will also be happy to see that Jake features in another poll - he is No. 6 in the Wonderwall Top 10 Fittest Celebrities, pleasantly sandwiched between past co-stars Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Biel. Matthew McConaughey is not surprisingly No 1 and also not very surprisingly Robert Pattinson is nowhere to be seen in this poll.

Many thanks to IHJ for keeping us watered during the Jake Drought with some new old pics of Jake enjoying LA winter weather back in December 2006. When you look this good in a white t-shirt, it's only right that you enjoy year-round sunshine. There are also some new pictures from the Bubble Boy publicity - hmmm, appropriate, I'd call it.

Fears mount that Jake Gyllenhaal knows how to do the Macarena

Alarming reports have emerged from the Mellon Arena set of Love and Other Drugs yesterday. I advise you to take a seat. Jake Gyllenhaal was seen doing the Macarena.

While it is not known if this wanton display of hip wriggling will form a pivotal part of the movie or was simply a new Relaxation Before You Go On Stage technique for Jake, it is very true that the Macarena fits the 1990s' date of the film. For all I know, the Macarena played a well-established bonding role in every pharmaceutical rep get together of the '90s.

It is therefore extremely fitting that the wonderful IHJ has chosen today of all days to upload new old pictures from the song and dance rehearsal for 2004's Sundance. In these pictures of Jake and Zooey Deschanel, the showman is desperately trying to burst out of Jake (ala John Hurt in Alien). If given the chance, how could anyone doubt the glee with which Jake would cry out 'Heeeyyyyy Macarena!'?

If the Macarena features in Love and Other Drugs, it's clear we're going to have to brush up on this much (actually, not very much) loved dance and get ready to sing and dance along with Jake - I can already imagine the DVD extras. I therefore post below an educational video.

Many thanks to IHJ for the pics!
