Jake Gyllenhaal: Walruses, EW in full, naked truths, texting, botanic gardens, FINCA, turning 30, stories, love, Spencer Tracy - and so much more

This post comes with a warning - this is the River Nile of all posts - it is so long that I do not advise that you tackle it without sugary snacks and/or liquid refreshment. I am going to start with a fine example of GyllenSpeak, something that we have been relatively short of lately despite all of the Love and Other Drugs publicity. Here is Jake Gyllenhaal in USA Weekend talking about how he'd like to commemorate his 30th birthday: 'I'd love to go swimming with the walruses and the whales in the freezing cold water... Seems like it could be a rite of passage.'

But... before we get on with the rest of this interview, here are the scans for EW, with enormous thanks to BBMISwear! What a fantastic interview. Click on them and they shall be embiggened.

And now back to the wonderful USA Weekend interview, conducted in the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, with Jake arriving and leaving on a bike (and with his big beard). It includes a description of Jake by Anne Hathaway: '"His humor has the ability to repulse and charm simultaneously," says the actress, adding: "For a young male celebrity who's one of the most beautiful men on the planet, no caveats, he's super-duper grounded. He's a terrible texter, though. Awful."'

Jake talks about families, Ramona, love and concludes in admirable Gyllenhaal fashion: "People find their way toward loving like water. Sometimes two rocks are set up in the wrong way and the water has to part and go, and I've seen that happen recently. As my family's broken apart into different pieces, I can also see that there's more love as a result." Then, breaking from the serious mood, he jokes, "We should have been in the Japanese Garden for this conversation!" Before hopping back on his bike, he ponders his life one more time, and he realizes how good it is for him right now, despite the heartbreaks. "It's Wednesday, the middle of the day, we're sitting in the botanical gardens, I rode up here on my bike. Life ain't so bad."'

You can read the full interview here.

There is another extract from what I believe to be the same interview here. In this, Jake discusses all the generations of his family and what he's learnt about acting.

Q: 'You’re almost 20 years into your career at this point. Most people who start their careers at 21, they reach that point after they’re 40. Do you feel like you’re on the path you’ve always wanted to be on?

JG: With this movie I do. I finished the script and I was like, “I want this, I want to do this, I’m going to do whatever I have to get this.” And if I didn’t get it, I would have been brokenhearted. In a strange way, when you say that, it’s funny because this really does feel like the beginning. There are definitely things I regret – not even talking about career, just because I’ve been working professionally for so long, there are those things. But there are things that are extraordinary that I’ve experienced, people I’ve worked with. I’m starting to shred so much insecurity and all that stuff. Maybe it’s just turning 30 and maybe it’s just the time I am in my life. It’s a hard question. Unfortunately, it’s hard for me not to be really thoughtful about things. People ask me what my favorite color is and it takes me like 15 minutes. [Laughs] It’s really unfortunate. So when you ask me that, I could wax on poetic for a long time about it.

Q: What kind of mindset did you have during the October Sky and Bubble Boy years when you were around 19, 20? Did you have a career path, or were you thinking, “This is fun, but maybe I’ll do something else after a while.”

JG: For me, it was like, yeah, this is fun, I can’t believe I’m doing this. And opportunities came from it and it was like, how could I not take these opportunities? They were amazing. I love acting. There is more that I want to do, yeah. I love making movies. I think movies are incredible and I was just thinking about this the other day: We’re all just storytellers. I just wasn’t aware of that when I was a lot younger. I didn’t realize how much I loved telling stories, the puzzles of it, the mistakes that come up, these incredible epiphanies you have when you’re doing it. A part of me didn’t totally know what I was getting into.

***INTERMISSION ***
Time out for tea and cake and a few stretching exercises

Q: Sometimes naivete is a good thing.

JG: Yeah, but it’s not until right now. Maybe I wasn’t so clear about which street to take, but I think I’m in the right area. And now I know I want to be more adventurous. And it’s not just choosing different types of roles. A lot of people have said to me in the past, “You’ve chosen very risky things. You’ve been very courageous in the roles you’ve chosen.” Ultimately, courage isn’t really a word that should be synonymous with acting I don’t think. There are other things in my life where I’d really like to test that courage.

Q:Like what?

JG: Just on a creative level, I would love to be making movies – I would love to be directing movies, be involved with the process of producing and writing and directing movies. That’s what I witnessed when I grew up, and I believe that’s really difficult. You gotta see what skin fits you. I’ve had a great amount of success with acting, and I hopefully will continue to. But it fits into the storyteller thing. My niece will ask for a story, and I’ll make up a story for her. I’ll realize three-quarters of the time how horrible the stories I’ve told are. They’re just bad stories. Badly told, bad structure, no real resolution. [Laughs]

Q: But does she know that?

JG: Yeah, she knows when it’s good. [Laughs] She always wants it again when it’s good. We’re no different than a 4-year-old: When it’s good, we want to see it again. When it’s not, we’re like, “Meh. OK, good try.”

Q: Most people think about settling down, having kids, that sort of thing when they turn 30. How do you feel?

JG: When you’re in your 20s, you’re feeling your way. But you know what, I meet some 20 year olds and I think they’re highly intelligent and wise, and I’ve met 70-year-olds who are not as wise as them. So I don’t really know. [Laughs] I feel really excited about it. I don’t feel pressure. I think I felt more pressure when I was younger. I feel approaching 30 has given me the permission to feel freer than I ever have. So that need to do whatever the convention tells you to, I feel I’ve cast it off more. I know people say, “OK, now’s the time to do this, now’s the time for that, to get married and have kids.” I certainly want a family of my own, but just because I’m turning 30 doesn’t mean I’m going to do it. Particularly when I talk to my 95-year-old aunt. She’s aware and awake and alive. I do feel that time, but it just makes me love my family and want to be with my family more and spend time with the children I know.

Q: You mentioned Spencer Tracy before, and you have joined the likes of him in the annals of Hollywood’s leading men.

JG: Yeah. Me and Spencer Tracy. “Listen, sweetheart…” If only I had a hat, it would be perfect. [Laughs]

Q:Do you like being a part of that history?

JG: There have been a lot of people besides Spencer Tracy that have been a part of that history. Good and bad. Yeah, I do feel honored to be a part of that. You look at those movies between Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, you look at certain scenes, and they could be today. You could be watching it and just flip it to black and white. There’s something about them that’s absolutely extraordinary. To be a part of making movies, if I’m going to steal my way into that somehow and say I’m a part of that, it’s great. It might be the Dark Ages for that history, but I’m still a part of the history! [Laughs]

There is also an interview in the LA Times. It's a goodie. And it harks back to Brokeback and that car scene... 'ake had touched me everywhere except my boob," says Hathaway, patting her chest as the pair sits together to discuss their new film, the upcoming romantic dramedy "Love & Other Drugs," which opens in theaters Wednesday. "We did it very methodically: I would cover, they'd bring me a towel, I'd get out of the car, go behind a screen and get redressed. All of a sudden I hear a throat clear from behind the screen. It's Jake. 'Ah, Annie, so the thing is, in this scene, if it was really you and me in the car, I just think that, you know, ah, can I touch your boob?'" "And ... I don't think you asked me this time," says Hathaway, turning to her screen partner to tease him about his behavior during the many love scenes they shot for their new project and laughing uproariously. "I already asked. Your offer was still good," Gyllenhaal says with a shrug.'

On the LAOD nudity: "We wanted to push it," Gyllenhaal says. "One of those avenues was when the sheets come off, you don't cover your breast, you don't cover a part of your body after you've slept with someone you're falling in love with five or six times."

Interestingly, jake talks about the change from Prince of Persia: '"I was desperate for character interaction, for scenes that were intimate, where I could spend a lot of time talking," Gyllenhaal says. "I loved the action and jumping around, but I get a different kind of action in this one." You can read the rest here. There is also an interview with Anne here.

Here is an interview Jake and Anne did with MTV. You can read more about it here.

As for what's going on in the here and now-ish, Jake was out last night at the 25th Anniversary Gala for Foundation for International Community Assistance (FINCA) with another co-star, Natalie Portman, and a singer that Jake has raved about, Florence (and the Machines). There are pictures from the event scattered through the post.

And finally

Unnamed Moon Project Update! And I quote: 'Meanwhile, the director Doug Liman (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) has long been working on his own movie about lunar colonization. Although the project has been in development for several years, Liman said recently he’d still like to make it, and one person familiar with the film said that line producers had just been hired, suggesting that a launch may not be far off.' That doesn't sound like much, but I'm grabbing it.

Jake Gyllenhaal on Regis and Kelly, more interviews and pictures from a big day of Love and Other Drugs publicity

This post is a top-up post, largely because I don't want to do an updated, updated, updated update and also because it's very possible that there's no such thing as too many posts in a day when Jake Gyllenhaal is on at least three different TV programmes over a space of 24 hours while taking his clothes off for the cover of three magazines (albeit the same magazine). And so, without any more ado, here is Jake on Regis and Kelly. I haven't seen this yet and so I'm hoping this show is less irritating than normal. And that they don't ask Jake about Cats and lapping milk yet again.

In these two videos we see Jake and Anne interviewing one another.

Here are Jake and Anne Hathaway talking about the EW shoot and, not a little bizarrely, the Royal Engagement. Talking of The Cover, here are the three spectacular covers again for EW. Which of the three do you prefer (although I do agree it's a matter of deciding between differing shades of perfection). Going from left to right mine is number three.

[Updated - again] More EW stunners, Jake and Anne on the Today Show - Jake Gyllenhaal on Letterman, E! and Jake & Anne's EW cover

[Updated updated update] Proving true the adage that you can never do enough updates when Jake's got his shirt off, here are the other two covers from EW courtesy of People.

Updated the update with another stunning picture from EW. As Anne says: 'The lack of clothing meant that there wasn't a lot of padding, so I was constantly bruised'. The lack of clothing is modelled in the picture below.

The Love and Other Drugs train continues to steam through the US media at a rate of knots. Last night, Jake Gyllenhaal was on the Late Show with David Letterman and on E!. And on the TV last night, we were given our first glimpse of Jake and Anne Hathaway on the cover of EW. Let's just say that not much was spent on wardrobe for the shot. Many thanks to Gyllenhaalisgr8 for the picture!

With thanks to IHJ, here is part 1 of the Letterman Show.

Unfortunately, Part 2 can't be embedded due to the LAOD clip, but you can watch that here.

Jake was also on E! last night:

And finally...

At the afterparty on Tuesday night, Oliver Platt appeared to be causing a bit of a rumpus. 'After seeing the movie at a screening Tuesday night, the excitable "West Wing" actor embraced Gyllenhaal, saying, "It was charming, it was great, this is going to be huge for you." After whispering into his ear, Platt piped up with his mantra: "Say it, I am an actor, I am not Justin Timberlake!" Turning to friends at restaurant Rouge Tomate, Platt -- presumed by onlookers to be poking fun at music stars who try their hand at acting -- flailed his arms, rejoicing, "With me, I am not Justin Timberlake!"'

Jake Gyllenhaal almost the world's sexiest man, LAOD has another premiere and Source Code gets its rating

So much going on today, I don't even have the time to brew a cuppa in my Prince of Persia mug or take a swig from my Prince of Persia water bottle. There's not even the time to hang my Prince of Persia Christmas decoration. So without any more beating around the proverbial, time to whip out the flipchart and dust off my laser pointy thingie. A lot to get through. First off, People magazine needs to hire a maths tutor because as sure as night follows day it most certainly cannot count. For some reason, Jake Gyllenhaal was not listed as the world's sexiest man even though he clearly is. Having said that, the names 'Ryan Reynolds' and 'Jake Gyllenhaal' are extremely similar and I can see where confusion could arise. As compensation, they did give us a gorgeous picture.

Star magazine has also been voting for the world's sexiest male and it did marginally better by Jake, placing him at No 6.

Star also devoted a page to Love and Other Drugs, revealing that Jake was made to memorise a 50-page pdf of the side-effects of Viagra. That is an awful lot of side-effects. Many thanks to Gyllenhaalisgr8 for the scans!

Proving true the well-known adage that you can never have enough premieres, there was another premiere of Love and Other Drugs in NYC last night, this time it was the DGA premiere and yet again it provided Jake with the perfect opportunity to look short.

It also gave Jake and Anne Hathaway another chance to display their incredible chemistry together. I think that Anne looks sensational here, absolutely sensational. And Jake doesn't look bad either - nice tan!

There is a great account here of the afterparty and the devastating effect of the Jake Gyllenhaal Charm Offensive. 'Jake was not dressed by the designer but still looked good enough to give several groups of women at the after-party a case of the giggles. While I usually consider myself a grown-up and a professional, I was reduced to a 14 year old girl who couldn't wait to scribble his name in bubble letters on the imaginary trapper keeper which holds my sexual fantasy material. If you enjoy him on the big screen, you would likely feel the same.' Without doubt.

Anne also spoke a little last night about her nervousness with the nude scenes. 'Anne, 28, appeared calm and collected during one of the most embarrassing moments on set even though her stomach was secretly spinning. “One of them was the scene where I have to remove my trench coat and be nude underneath,” Anne said. “And I thought we were filming, but it turned out we were just rehearsing and I got unnecessarily naked in front of a lot of people.” “I just did my job,” Anne explained. And apparently she did it well. Not even the film’s director, Edward Zwick, could tell that Anne was nervous. “She was not nervous at the sex scenes at all,” Ed said to us. “I think she was remarkably collected.”'

Jake had this to say: '“It’s a naturally awkward thing to be having fake cinematic sex with anybody, so I feel like with an actress (a woman in particular) when you’re on a set and dealing with what is usually a majority of men on a movie set, I always feel like it’s my responsibility to kind of protect and make sure that she feels comfortable because they tend to be more objectified,” He continued, “So to ease her and make her feel comfortable, I was always like, ‘Where do you want me to go? What do you want me to do? What do you feel comfortable doing?’ Anne was always like, ‘You do your thing and I’ll do my thing. I’m fine on my own!’”

'This wasn’t the first time Jake and Anne worked together on such intense scenes — their first sex scene together took place in Brokeback Mountain. “I had to sort of resist it in the last movie,” Jake said. “And this time I could go for it!” “There are all different types of love in this movie — romantic, familial, and friendship,” Jake added. “What I think I learned most of all was when making a movie, particularly a love story, in order to have a great creative process and be open and ready and game for anything, you kind of have to fall in love with everybody involved. I certainly did in some ways with Ed [Zwick] and Anne. We all did. What we share as a result is really special.”'

For pictures of some of the other stars in attendance last night, take a look here.

Source Code Rated PG-13

Source Code has received its rating and it's PG-13 'for some violence including disturbing images, and for language.' A good rating for a film that hopefully a lot of people will see.

And finally

Am I the only one to be disturbed by this pigeon?

Many thanks to IHJ for the pictures (many more there) and to Gyllenhaalisgr8!

Variety screens Love and Other Drugs and how an audience gives back to the director

Last night, it was the turn of Love and Other Drugs to feature in the Variety Screening Series Let us hope this is one of the series that is later made available for all of us to watch.

Jake has been talking elsewhere a little more about the mass nudity on set: '“Ed did get naked with us for one shot,” he says. “It terrified me and he was so eager to do it too. I just wish we were shooting some kind of horror film. We could use that as a close up!”'

With thanks to BBMISwear, here is a spread from Hollywood Reporter for 17 November, which takes a look at the screening at the AFI Fest. There is a great quote from Ed Zwick: 'The more you work on a movie, the less it becomes yours. But you see it with an audience, and they give it back to you.'

And finally

Jake and Ed have been interviewed by Newsweek. You can watch that here or below.

Thanks to IHJ and BBMISwear.

Jake Gyllenhaal out and about in NYC, 15 November 2010

Jake Gyllenhaal is now back in the USA, specifically New York City, which can mean only one thing: yes, the sun can come out in London again. The TV promotion for Love and Other Drugs kicks off on Wednesday and so there's plenty of time for Jake to practice answering some more of the same questions. Thanks to IHJ for the pictures of Jake arriving at JFK today complete with a very nice coat. And, by the look of it, someone may have dropped something. I hope they picked it up. There are more pictures there.

Later on, Jake, all changed and decidedly hot, was seen leaving his hotel. Nice scarf.

If you're looking for somewhere to go to watch the Oscars this year, then Pittsburgh might not be your first choice. But, The Pitt as we came to know and love it during the filming of Love and Other Drugs, is hosting an Oscars party during which there's a silent auction where you can bid on items including those donated by Jake and Anne Hathaway. Obviously it has to be a silent auction or otherwise you wouldn't hear all of the speeches.

In this video interview Jake and Anne answer a number of questions about being comfortable nude together (no doubt this question will come up again) and about how hard it is for Jake 'even you?!' Gyllenhaal to get a girl's phonenumber. Apparently it's something to do with women being 'an amazing breed' and 'complicated creatures'. Anne puts him right.

For anyone who's interested, I've written a review of Skyline on MovieBrit.

Thanks to IHJ for the lovely pictures.

'Charisma-bomb' Jake Gyllenhaal on Anne Hathaway (and exchanging iPhone apps)

Anne Hathaway is in December's issue of the UK Elle but some of the words belong to Jake Gyllenhaal, otherwise known in the article as the 'charisma-bomb'. It also appears that during the shoot Jake encouraged Anne to go cycling with him whilst also swapping iPhone apps (possibly not at the same time).

This is what Jake has to say about his leading lady and friend: ''Annie had a difficult job of letting go and breaking down the boundaries that most actresses of her beauty and talent put up as protection. I think this is just a universal truth, that women are much more scrutinised and criticised and fawned over for baring themselves in movies, but Annie was so brave and vulnerable and as a result of being herself, she turns in an extraordinary performance and one that all women will respect.''

'It's the second time they've worked together)... He describes working with her as 'play' and adds: 'She is definitely an enthusiast. She's up for anything. Almost anything I would invite her to do, she would be game for. That may be a reaction to being the good girl for most of her early-life, but it is working for her and it is great to be around.' Which makes it sound like he was taking her out for wild nights of rebellious debauchery - from what Anne says, they mainly went cycling - but he's right: she is a good girl.'

And then there's the iPhone apps: 'She has news, word games, Tetris 'of course' and a Brian-Eno designed music app that Jake turned her on to.' I reckon that's likely to be Bloom.

I was interested to read - as a fellow veggie - of a hunt that took place in London on Friday to find Anne the perfect vegan birthday cake. I'm sure Jake would have enjoyed a slice of that as well.

There are some more details here of the Parkinson's side to Love and Other Drugs, from the point of view of one of the actresses in the film who has the disease herself.

And finally

As promised, here are a couple of pictures from last night's PoP Party, which was an enormous success, thanks to Ruby, Mr Ruby, Anouska, Dastan, champagne and a cat. A big thank you hug to Mr Ruby for a spectacular Persian feast. I'm pleased to say that Dastan is now recovering after one of his legs snapping off at the knee. I'm assured that after copious therapy with superglue and tape he will walk again - but his ostrich-racing days may be over.

Includes pictures from Elle, Pure People and Ruby.
