As part of the New York Film Festival there is a display at the Walter Reade Theater's Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery of signed celebrity polaroids taken by photographer Henny Garfunkel. As one might expect, many of these informal photographs, called One Last Shots, show the stars letting their hair down - two of these stars are close to our heart. Henny photographed Jake Gyllenhaal at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2005 where, of course, he was promoting Brokeback Mountain.
Henny tells us: "I shot Jake in Toronto in 2005. He was there for Brokeback Mountain and there was alot of buzz around him," Garfunkel remembers of a playful Gyllenhaal. "Anne Hathaway, Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams were all in the room while I was shooting and someone came in and told them they had just won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. They were all jumping up and down." The next year Henny took a picture of Heath Ledger, also at Toronto, where Heath was promoting Candy. Heath signed his Monkey Man! Thanks to Jantoinette for this, it made my evening.
Rendition videos
I have three video links to post tonight. The first, which several of you saw last night, shows Jake being interviewed in Toronto by someone who is clearly full of admiration for Jake's films and Jake's 'really good choices'. I enjoyed hearing Jake talk in this interview about the appeal of film festivals, particularly Toronto, as places where everybody who loves movies comes together to watch great films. This was certainly my own experience of Toronto, as opposed to Cannes and Rome. The misspelling of Jake's name in the article that accompanies this video is not easy to ignore.
The second video is from the LA Rendition premiere event and, in addition to a chat with Jake, it includes a little interview with Aramis Knight, the boy (now aged 8, Jake tells us) who played Isabella's son, which is very amusing. Jake offers his interviewer a piece of the beard action.
The final video is also from E! and is a brief look behind the scenes of Rendition - hopefully indicating that there may be plenty of extras ahead for the DVD. It is painful to hear Omar Metwally discuss his worst day of filming.
Brothers
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Natalie Portman discusses her music tastes - which includes an appreciation for The Shins. The interview also featured a brief mention of Brothers: Natalie says of the original version of the film: 'I actually haven't seen it yet either. I'm not sure if I will because I'm a little scared. I'm always scared that my whole performance will be dictated by either trying to do the same or trying to do something different than what I see someone else do.'
And finally...
A taste of the Jake and Reese special in People magazine was shown on US TV on E! News and was captured by Stephanie at IHJ. Here are a couple of the pictures, giving us a taster of what we will see when the issue hits the US stands, tomorrow I believe.
Includes pictures from IHJ.
I know everyone here would like to join me in sending heartfelt good wishes to Sass who isn't feeling too well at the moment. We wish you a speedy recovery friend.

Wow. You certainly are good to us WDW, three videos, pictures, news articles...
Loved the one shots of Jake and Heath from the Henny Garfunkel collection, they were fantastic. I loved that Jakelick!
And it was great to hear how much Jake appreciates Festivals, particularly the Toronto Film Festival. Makes it all the more special doesn't it.
The beard action, well, normally I hate beards, but I have to say Jake's is growing on me.
Behind the scenes was a good vid too, and the cuddle at the end was lovely, so Jake.
Thank you for all this info! And best wishes to Sass.
Hi Rosie - glad you liked the videos - I thoroughly enjoyed watching them, reminding me of happy days in Toronto. That has to be the most special festival. And I loved to see the Gyllenhug there too, lucky Gavin. Thanks for commenting :)
Awwww, Sass, hope you're being taken care of - love ya!
I spent the WHOLE DAY getting back on UTUBE also my wireless went haywire - the upside is that my computer guy is so sweet: he arrives with something in his ear that keeps flashing blue light. I suppose I could have asked him what the hell it was, I guess it's his pager, or something. but as preferred to think of it as something more strange. I told him he reminded me of Jason Bourne with his bag of tricks. I tell him that Jack and Ennis, my wallpaper, are "mascots" hahahahaha!
Anyway, finally I can open my bottle of aussie shiraz and "settle down, cowgirl" to enjoy today's "column" which is pretty nifty.
Peter looked as if he was wearing a clerical collar in one bit, making me think he should play a priest, sometimes. maybe - a rogue priest!
I am so curious about the choice of New Mexico for Brothers shooting! Eighteen months?
Hey Positively Pia - I'm gulping (sorry, savouring) a very good Californian Cabernet Sauvignon tonight. And for Brothers I think that was 18 weeks not months, did I write months?
Thinking of your computer story, I have to take my car into the garage next week but at least they'll know whose keys are whose - my key ring has Mrs Jake Gyllenhaal written all over it :D
Have a good night :)
WDW! How come you didn't warn me about the Henny Garfunkel pic of Jake lying there with his tongue hanging out like that!! That's the really er...interesting one!! And it definitely WON'T be going in the TMI file;) I love it! And love the Heath one too!
Thanks too for the videos:) I still can't get the Access HW one to play:( But I love the either two and I hope you're right and we get loads of stuff like this on the DVD extras (and that it's all on the one DVD and not a second "improved" version a la Zodiac). Aramis Knight is so sweet and cute isn't he? Bless...So is Omar Metwally, but in a totally different way;)
(((Sass)))
Thanks for this potpourri of great gifts once again WDW!!!!I remember the room where the photographer must have shot these pics. It looks similar to photos I saw of Heath and Michelle on a sofa and Jake sort of behind them posing. I sure hate it that I have to buy People Magazine. I try really hard not to buy that stuff. But it's Jake. (sigh.)
Toronto is really a great place for film lovers together! It really is a place for the regular, normal (!) person who loves films to get their fill. But I did see a real change in the atmosphere/attitude in Toronto this time compared to my previous visits. TIFF has been "discovered." It is now a very HOT place to be. And so it isn't as 'user friendly' and as open as it once was. I think the people in charge will need to look at how the entire festival is structured and really try to make some accomodation for the tens of thousands of ordinary people who come in for the festival. If they don't, they will definitely have some problems IMHO.At the very least, they need to schedule more screenings of films and find a way to make obtaining tickets more accessible. And they should provide free (alcoholic) beverages to people waiting in line, and also they should give us quality time with the film stars of our choice!
LOLOL!!
Hey TL - great to chat to you tonight :) The Henny pic is just gorgeous. There's something about Jake when he poses like that :P nd i's true, Omar Metwally is officially gorgeous!
Hi Bobbyanna - well, you know how much I loved Toronto, although my visit was fleeting, and seeing you ther made it so much better. I was surprised at how many people there were there and that the place never slept. But what an atmosphere - unbelievable. The organisation was not good though - their computer system forever going down and no communication - what a hassle all that was - but otherwise I loved the set up and how it focused on such a small area. Also it was aimed at people who like movies - Cannes is aimed at professionals and Rome isn't quite certain who it's aimed at. Also, in Rome, I think the stars may be a little unsure about who or what it's all for. There's been no interest in the Rome Festival here, in contrast to Toronto and Cannes. But I suppose it's still early days, it was only its second year.
I know what you mean about buying People. I bought the Sun for the first time in my life yesterday for the Jake and Reese article, but at least it meant I had a TV Guide (shame nothing was on :\). I am keen to see People though.
And back to your comment about film festivals: And they should provide free (alcoholic) beverages to people waiting in line, and also they should give us quality time with the film stars of our choice! - Err, YES!
It seems like we're all hitting the bottle tonight. I'm sipping some "Chat-en-oeuf" ( I kid you not,it has a cat sitting on an egg on the label and "Miaow" written down the cork. A small donation goes to the RSPCA (a British animal welfare charity)from the price of each bottle and it's a tasty little red,so everybody wins :-)
But to business. You've unearthed several more gems again,WDW,well done! I loved the clip of the LA "Rendition" premiere. Have to admit I tend to find many precocious kids thoroughly nauseating but Aramis Knight is a genuine cutie. I love how he declares Omar a great actor(how right he is!) because he really made himself cry and everything! AWWW!
Just been doing a little checking on Mr.Metwally (are you paying attention,TL??!)and he's currently filming a movie called "Amsterdam",due out in 2008 about a group of disparate characters who all end up in Amsterdam for various reasons and whose paths become intertwined in a life-changing way for all of them. One to look out for,I think!
Thanks for those great Garfunkel polaroids too,WDW,capturing Jake's lovable loopiness during the "Brokeback" promotion. Ahhh, happy days! Love the way Heath doctored his mugshot too - what a dingbat!
And the "Behind The Scenes" footage bodes well for added extras on the "Rendition" DVD. Love the trademark Gyllenhug for Gavin with the extra warm clasped hand-shake with a rub for emphasis from Jake. They seem to have a great mutual respect and friendship,so,with luck, they'll work together again with similarly brilliant results!
Get Well Soon,Sass!
Great to chat to you as well, WDW:)
And yes,it's like there was something written into the contract that all the men involved in Rendition had to be attractive: Omar Metwally,The Gorgeous Kelley Sane, Gavin Hood,Peter Sarsgaard, the guy who plays Khalid...oh, and that bloke...wotsisface...;)
Thanks Nadine, for the tip off about The Gorgeous Omar Metwally - I'll definitely keep an eye out for that one:)
Hey Nadine - that sounds like very strange plonk you're drinking - are you sure it's for humans ;)
I am totally intrigued by Omar's new film and I'll definitely look out for that - thanks. He's so handsome but also extremely modest and gentle. I just loved him in Toronto - he received relatively little attention there but deserved far more.
The Garfunkel pics are great, aren't they? Great days.
I loved the clip of Jake Gyllenhugging Gavin as they finished the scene, even the movie. Perfect.
"And for Brothers I think that was 18 weeks not months, did I write months?"
Oh. haha. of course. and I was already packin' my car to go out there. still! eighteen weeks! a year and a half! maybe I will pack up my little red car. last time I was out there an Hispanic gang doing a "initiation" bashed all the windows with baseball bats. my little car was so courageous! Handsome Hispanic cop said, Senora, dont take it personally, which I didnt. O gosh TMI. However, it's good to be back here after a day off-line! ! !
Hey TL - Wotsisface was ok, wasn't he?... Gavin Hood is just so big! There is so much to look at in Rendition (and its screenwriter's not bad ;) )
Glad to have you back Positively Pia - I was wondering where you'd got off to, New Mexico? Maybe we should all pile into the red car and go on a roadtrip :)
Oh (((Pia))) That sounds really scary:( Hope you have better luck if you do make the trip again. Or that at least a handsome American actor comes to your rescue;)
WDW, yeah, wotsisface is alright, I suppose. I wouldn't say no, if he asked me nicely;D
Hi WDW, I plan on being at the forefront of obtaining that People and will email, you as soon as I get my hot little hands on it for your info, so get ready!!! Positively Pia, for me it's Pinot Grigio tonite, my favorite white wine...love you all.
Hi all. Lots of great stuff! Again, WDW you spoil us! :D Love the pic of Jake at TIFF. And once again great videos.
Bobbyanna I totally agree about TIFF. I have been going on and off for a couple of years now and yes it has gotten very big and become the hot festival. It wasn't as chaotic. They have always made it hard for out of towners getting tickets. But it seems more and more movie lovers are going, not just industry people. They really do need to do something to make the whole process easier. But I truly love it because it is a festival for the people.
Feel better, Sass.
Thanks so much CWG *) I'll await your email :)
I love how we're a wine club here - I'm drinking a red from Sycamore Canyon, California, and it is delicious :) I did enjoy Jake's wine drinking on Ellen! In fact, I might watch that again now.
Pia, wow, scary stuff. Glad you weren't harmed.
And yes love the Gyllenhug with Gavin.
Hi Get Real - I agree that TIFF has something really special going for it and I think that's because it puts the film buff first although, as you say, it's bedlam trying to sort out tickets there. Those long lines and also just finding the ticket offices.
Thanks for all the updates!
Road trip! Road trip! doesnt anyone do road trips anymore! hey, Im game! Although I heard just yesterday that alot of the iinterstate truckers are now hispanic and they drive like manicas! sounds like fun to me!
Thanks so much Anon! Please come back again and I'd love to have a name for you :)
Pia - I adore road trips - I love to drive and I love big scenery. And believe me, everyone round here in southern England drives like a maniac (except me :D)
G'night everyone - see you tomorrow Friday, phew...) :D
Justjared posted 65 pictures...yes. 65 pictures of Jake & Reese on a sightseeing tour of Rome. Almost had a heart attack!
Morning everyone - Friday! So how many of us are going to see Rendition again this weekend, eh?
I saw those Bobbyanna - that's a lot of photos :) It will present me with selection problems later on!
Hope evryone has a great Friday :D
Bobbyanna, thanks for the Just Jared tip...great pics, 'The Date' is actually smiling!!! Jake has the infamous oral fixation thing again...always something in his mouth ;) Did anyone say road trip?
I caught a matinee with about 5 other people this afternoon. I love empty cinemas. If I ever strike it rich, I'm building a cinema in the back yard for my own personal use. I love that feeling you have when it's just you and the film, with no interruptions or distractions. It feels so much more intense, involving somehow.
Hi CWG :D
You're making me want to see Rendition again right now BMG - I love cinemas like that too. I'm seeing it again tomorrow afternoon so I'm hoping to just wallow in it - especially two scenes in particular ;)
Off home now - see you all later!
Hello chaps,it's the weekend! Hope you're home with your feet up now,WDW.
Strange,I love empty cinemas too which is why I always try to go to Matinee performances which tend to be very sparsely attended in my neck of the woods. Much easier to lose yourself in the film when there's only you,a couple of other people and the cinema cat in a screening, although sometimes, especially with a comedy, the communal experience of a full cinema is fun.
Not sure I'll see "Rendition" again now until the DVD comes out which will mean regular trips to the website for top up clips and listening to the music while I'm Jaking. I love the soundtrack to this film. Though it's wistful and the film really got to me and has stayed with me,the theme to "Rendition" somehow makes me peaceful when I listen to it,whereas I still can't play the "BBM" CD because it's too damn painful even now.
As for Jake's oral fixation,CWG,I used nicotine chewing gum to wean myself off cigarettes and 15 years later I still chew ordinary gum quite regularly, especially in situations when I would at one time have wanted to smoke. Perhaps Jake's frequent chewing on toothpicks etc is just one of his coping strategies for staying off the fags.
Hi WDW,
Thanks to everyone for your kindness and warm, loving hugs.
I'll return later to relax and enjoy all the new videos and articles you posted:)
sass
Hey WDW,
As I was passing I thought I'd point out that Jake looks like Russell Brand in that first one. :)
Hi Nadine! I'm sitting here right now, feet up, glass of wine in my hand (typing with one hand)having just done today's post. And it's Friday evening! I do love that Rendition website too, the music is just beautiful. I'll see the film again tomorrow. It's so special for me because of Toronto and Rome - and, of course, because in it Jake looks like Bafta Jake :)
I think this red thing Jake's chewing may be a spoon from ice cream perhaps. But it is a definite habit of his - I liked how they worked the gum chewing into Rendition :)
Hey Sass - just good to send you some love - I'm thinking of you *)
Anouska - I don't half love that Russell. I do like those pics of Jake and Heath, not least because they're from Toronto. See you soon :)
