Happy Halloween everyone and, for all the Celts in Britain and elsewhere, happy Samhain. I'm trying to keep the image of Jake Gyllenhaal dressed as a tube of toothpaste from my mind (which isn't easy as it's an image that sticks), preferring instead to think of Jake in this spooky incarnation.
Jake has made the occasional frightening feature (and I don't just mean Proof), most notably Zodiac, which certainly succeeded in giving me the heebie jeebies, especially in the scene with the lady and her baby in the car. Of course, there was also that 'not many houses in California have cellars' scene. While looking around to see if I could post anything frightening tonight, I came across an interview with Jake for Zodiac on the horror movie website Terrorfeed. This interview isn't new but it is appropriate and the Jake you see being interviewed is Rendition Jake, who is the definitive opposite to anything remotely scary.
While we talk about old videos, Jon Stewart's Daily Show has released film from past shows, including Jake's October 2002 appearance for Moonlight Mile. Jake's confidence and maturity in this interview, when aged just 21, is remarkable and shows how naturally he took to the business. It also explains why Jake is such a good guest for the Daily Show today, five years on. I particularly like the moment when Jake clutched Jon's hand to make Jon feel better about the passing of the years. How bizarre that Dustin Hoffman gave Jake his very own walker - not only can the world be scary, it can also be downright peculiar.
Time for a cocktail
Speaking of Zodiac, as we were, after pleading with Smilesalot to share with us her Aqua Velva cocktail experiences, which she discussed in a comment here recently, I was so happy to receive her photographs of the event today. With her permission, I include the pictures here of Smilesalot and E-stalk, both of whom were also at TIFF (you may remember the video of Jake signing his Brokeback shirt - that video was from Smiles and her friends), even though we unfortunately didn't meet. No fear of that mistake again. I would particularly like to congratulate Smiles and E-Stalker on their creativity with the cocktail umbrella.
As a reminder to us all - at least those of us who would like to experience the blue nectar ourselves - here is the recipe according to Wikipedia. Don't leave home without it.
'A spring of fresh organic mint; 2 cups high quality vodka; 1/4 oz of Blue Curacao
Place enough mint in the bottom of a mortar and pestle and grind with a tablespoon of vodka until it's a green pulp. Put the mint paste into a mason jar with vodka and refrigerate overnight, or over several days until the vodka is a greenish color. The longer you keep the mint in, the stronger the mint flavor will be. Filter out the leaves with a cheesecloth or tea strainer and keep the vodka refrigerated.
Serve several ounces of the green vodka with a splash of Blue Curacao over ice. Add soda water if desired. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint (or an orange slice). An alternate, but still prevalent, form of the drink (excluding mint) can be made with vodka, blue curacao, gin and lemon-lime soda served over ice.'
Includes pictues from IHJ and Smilesalot.

Ok WDW, when are we gonna do the blue stuff? I'm ready! ;)
DD is a good Halloween movie. Did you know there is a new DD book out? Amazon sent me an email promoting it today - I'll forward it to you.
Hey Ruby - as you know, when it comes to the blue meanie cocktail, I'm more than ready! I have the recipe, we know the bars. let's do it :)
I didn't know about the new DD Book? Very interesting. Please send me the info :)
Brilliant post, thank you WDW!! So many lovely Jake treats!!
Love Rendition Jake in the Zodiac interview, especially in that black shirt, it really suits him *swoon* Btw, the first of the pics you have up from the video looks like he's practising a certain scene in Rendition:D
And you know I have a bit of a thing for Jon Stewart, so I can't tell you how much I LOVE that video:D You're right, Jake does seem amazingly confident there considering how young he was (or maybe it's precisely because he's so young, the fearlessness of youth and all that). He also comes across as a little bit cocky, but he's so cute and funny he totally gets away with it. And what was that about having been through the carwash a few times??!! I'm not going to even go there...(except in my dreams;)
Nice to see Smiles and E-stalk here!:D
Hey Twisted Logic! So glad you liked the post and its Jon Stewart bonus. I love to see Rendition Jake in that black shirt ;) I think you're right about The Daily Show - it's easy to be cheeky when you're young and new to the game and not thinking how things seem. The carwash was funny! I love how Jake can always make me laugh - I was watching Ellen on the tube again today and I had to stifle the giggles, although I let quite a few out! Those sauteed starbursts are too much :)
Love Jon Stewart and understand how everytime he has Jake on his program he seems to just want to - well, BE him! Yes I too loved Jake spontenously reaching out to comfort JS in his personal anguish haha that he ain't Jake. Oh
so handsome, sweet natured, quick witted and funny. Slipping in the Nancy Kerrigan reference.
It's a darlin' video, thanks WDW!
Gosh Jake was squirmy, as he often is, in talk show couches and chairs.
Smilesalot and E-stalk, what sweet pictures, thank you so much for posting these - sometimes I think Jake's kinda lucky to call forth all the sweet love.
Hi Positively Pia - that's so funny - and true - Jake reaching out to comfort Jon because Jon is not Jake :D Oh and Jake was very squirmy, I was thinking that too (trousers a bit tight?). Jake has some wonderful fans, that's for sure.
Thanks for the videos WDW...always love a Jake vid!
And as someone who has ENJOYED the company of Smilesalot and E-Stalk in Toronto....I say to you...don't miss the opportunity!
That's really interesting about a new DD book Ruby, ..I'm going straight to look!
Morning everyone - I hope noone had nightmares last night ;)
Morning Rosiet - I do love how so many of us have some fantastic memories of Toronto. The book looks interesting by the way.
Hi WDW,hi chaps and a special hi to Anouska because I am similarly dependent on public Internet access at the moment :-(
I don't know if it was something in the Hallowe'en air,but having been to work, visited my oldies, and done some necessary chores yesterday,I settled down about 5p.m. to have a Jakey session and my PC just began to eat itself =:-0
The screen told me that it couldn't read the "hive" (?) as something was corrupt and then went on to "dump" stuff as I looked on helpless. It had been perfectly OK the night before.
My husband isn't quite as cluesless as me when it comes to cyber-technology and he resurrected the PC,but I've lost all the Jakey stuff I'd saved over the past few months, loads of clips and hundreds of gorgeous photos, all of which I should have saved to disc but have had neither the technology or the time so to do :-( .
We are still having trouble re-connecting to the Internet, so here I am in the library (don't have Internet cafes in this backwater!)just trying to stay in touch with you all. Thank God I can pick up my e-mails on my mobile or I'd be going quietly bonkers. I can find plenty of other things to do while I'm incommunicado, but nothing's as much fun as coming here for some Gyllen-worship with my friends on WDW!
I know MUCH worse things happen at sea (like Sass being poorly - I hope you're feeling better, hon, and the Docs sort you out in double quick time!). My PC meltdown is but a blip in the grand scheme of things but I'm still pretty cheesed off about it. Hey ho,onward and upward ! :-)
Sorry to take up valuable blog-space with a selfish whinge. I may well have to sort out some headphones for tomorrow so I can watch the clips that WDWTL enterprises have once more unearthed like virtual Blood-hounds. Until then, happy Jaking and hugs to you all,(especially anyone who's got REAL problems and not just a cyber-crash! xxxxx)
It's funny looking at that 2002 interview, I was aware of Jake as a fine actor at the time, didn't lust after him though, too young and puppyish looking for me, and now, five years later he's the very definition of sex of a stick and maturing beautifully.
Thank you for all the updates once more.
Loved watching Jake on TDS! The chemistry between him and Jon Stewart is delightful. And it's held up well over the past five years.
I'll just have to take your word for it on the Acqua Velva cocktails, WDW!! I'm sure they're delish, but it just looks like some kind of mouthwash or a brand of window cleaner...so I'll pass. LOL!!
There were all sorts of monster movies being aired the past few days for Halloween, but I satisfied my craving by watching DD. It is THE quintessential Halloween movie. (Have always wondered if Jake actually had to carry the real Jena Malone in those scenes. If I ever get a chance, that's one of the questions I will ask him LOL!!))
Hi WDW, who are those two beautiful gals in that picture on this post drinking the blue stuff?
^^^^^^ One of 'em is Em, and she's spoken for. Me 'n her got a thing going on. Well at least we do when her husband isn't around :-)...
Jake looks and sounds a tad stoned in that Jon Stewart interview.
Maybe it's just his youthful exuberance.
Has anyone seen the pics of Jake in his halloween costume on IHJ? I thought the glitter mask and padded gillet was unsexy enough, but this? Then again, i am monkeyphobic.
WDW - thanks for posting the NON-incriminating pictures of E-stalk and myself. BTW, E-stalk's real E-name is MississaugaRed. E-stalk is just my little pet name for her because of our Jake stalking incident.
Regardless, someone mentioned the drinks looked like blue mouthwash. We're pretty sure the bartender had no idea what they were making because it tasted more like a minty soft-drink than anything suitably toxic. Regardless it's the thought that counts and we thought of Jake a lot as we were sucking them back. ;)
Joyce - Ooooo I love it when you get all "Hands off! She's my bitch!" Although I do think E-stalk is a far better catch, believe you me!
Wonderful vid, especially with Jon Stewart. So happy Jon's hosting the Oscars.
'she's my bitch' Bwahahahahahaha!
Just don' you forget it 'K. ;-)
This is my first ever post on WDW, but I've been reading and loving your blog for some time now, so hello. *waves* I was wondering when to take the plunge, but seeing the pics of Smiles and Missy drinking their aqua-velvas just spurred me on! Their TIFF adventures are legendary over at ennisjack, and even though I'm on the wrong side of the atlantic, I felt like I was there through it all (well, I was also wanting to cry cos they were THAT close to Jakey, and I wasn't, and probably never will be!).
Anyway, I'm waffling.....I love all the vids and pics you post and I particularly enjoyed Jake on TDS with Jon Stewart who, like TwistedLogic, I have a thing for. Jake was adorably gorgeous and funny. That man HAS to be in a comedy. He is made for it. There are so many good things about that vid but the part when Jon asks if Dustin Hoffman ever had to worry about acting opposite Jake and Jake said "Every day!" in that "don't mess with me! I'm the man!" kind of way. Hilarious.
Oh dear, this was rather a long post. I was only meant to say hello.
Hi WDW!
I want to share that Jake on Jon Stewart video with everyone in the entire world. He;s such an adorable young man. Thanks to you WDW, I can enjoy it ad lib.
Ty for your good vibes Nadine:) The docs are great to me and I'm happy with them so far:)
I know how you're suffering after the meltdown.
I had to reinstall--with tech help of course--my OS in August, and I had no back up discs made of most of my pics, because my burner was on the blink.
I hope you can get back on soon. Did you store pics at Photobucket? That's the only site I had pics left after the meltdown.
I went to see Rendition again yesterday, because I don't think it will last in many theaters this weekend, and I wanted to see it in a comfy theater with huge screen and great sound. I enjoyed it just as much as I did October 20, 2007. School-Girlish comment here,
Jake looks enormous on screen; he sucks all the air out of a scene until he is all you see on screen, or am I prejudiced:)
hugs to ya,
xoxoxox
Hi friends! Back home - feet are up, glass of Californian wine in my hand (well, precariously balanced next to me), new post up and so I can say hi!
Thanks for all the comments.
Nadine I'm so sorry you're scuppered with the PC problem. That's terrible. I could hardly survivie 2 days in Rome without the net and the community here so I sympathise and I hope you get it fixed soon - we need you lovely, long posts :)
And Nadine feel free to vent anythime - we're here to listen *)
Hi Anon13:30 - I'm with you on that one. I've always favoured grown up Jake, and so I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed the 2002 interview. I get put off by some of the photo shoots Jake did around tht time but this interveiw shows that he's always been the funny, witty, self-deprecating Jake that we love, with the quirkiness too.
Hey Bobbyanna - next time I see you (and hopefully your lovely daughter) we can do some serious cocktail drinking. I'm not a fan of blue drinks myself but I did enjoy a spate of blue margaritas in the wake of Zodiac. When the special DVD comes out in January I'll be back to those - do you know how much I love Zodiac :)
Hi CWG! They are lovely ladies aren't they.
Good to see you Joyce - Glad to feel the love... :D
Bmg - oh yes, saw pics, see new post. For some reason, the gorilla suit reminded me of Monty Python.
Hey Star Smilesalot - I think you have a fan in Joyce there ;) But, the army of slashers here will be thrilled to see the pics of you and MississaugaRed (I'm glad you spelt that not me). I definitely think one should always have Jake in mind while enjoying cocktails.
Welcome Christie - so good to see you here and how great to see all visitors from the EnnisJack community. I'm from your side of the Atlantic too (I think) and I've seen Jake a fair few times so don't rule it out, OK! And the first time was in London Town. I definitely agree that Jake is made and born for comedy - he's given us so much but so much potential :)
Hey Sass! Hope you're feeling good tonight *) Prejudiced or not - Jake looked absolutely wonderful in Rendition and I could look at him in that all day everyday right now!
