I'm absolutely delighted to bring you the video of Jake Gyllenhaal on The Culture Show last night, all due to the sterling efforts of Twisted Logic who managed to do this for us despite attending a Hen Party and suffering the consequences. This clip comprises the entire segment by Frank Gardner, who used DVDs and movies as part of his therapy to deal with what had happened to him in Saudi Arabia. As both Frank and Jake agree, Rendition is extraordinarily apposite and shows what is going on right now.
Jake in the Telegraph
When Jake was featured in the Sunday Telegraph a week ago today, I had no idea, being in Rome as I was, that Jake was featured on the cover. I must thank Anouska for her wonderful gift today.
Spooky Jake
Last night, a man and a woman in disguise attended a halloween party in Brentwood hosted by Kate Hudson. I admit that the watch is a bit of a giveaway and I'm willing to own up now that the wig wasn't one of my better efforts.
Here's a very brief glimpse in video form.
Includes pictures from IHJ.

Thanks for the Culture Show interview! Will watch it after I post. Just got back from seeing Rendition again. :)
Glad you had a fun day WDW with some of the WDW ladies and your hubby. Wish I could have been there because I am sure you all are lots of fun. ;)
Interesting pics of Jake and Reese in costume. Guess he is doing a sort of upgraded Jason mask? I hope they had fun!
I just clicked on the video for the Culture Show and YouTube says it is no longer available? :(
That's the first chance I've had to watch the interview properly as I was in no fit state last night to do more than drool:D I thought Jake looked very impressed and humbled when Frank Gardner told him about himself and his experiences. Shame the interview couldn't have been longer cos it would have been a really interesting conversation. On a more general note, I thought Frank made a very interesting point at the end, about how focussing on the negative side of American (and British cos our Government's not blameless either) foreign policy it could stir up even more anti-western feelings. Kind of like what Douglas says in the "pie chart" scene.
I really hope this programme encourages people to go and see Rendition if they haven't already. I know it's made me even more keen to see it again.
I've got my playlists on shuffle at the moment, and just as scrolled down to the Halloween party pics, what song should start playing but "Horror Show" by The Libertines!:D
What exactly was Jake supposed to be dressed as? He looks like a cross between an Egyptian mummy and a country gent out for a day of shooting innocent animals for fun. Weird!
More to the point, is it safe to drive with that mask on his face? Surely he can't see properly? Sorry, just going into over-protective motherly road safety freak mode here!
Get Real- the link works fine for me?
Hi Get Real - I don't now what happened with the video but it should be available again now :)
Call that costume? Oh we tried better than that in my day... Jason is a mystery to me as I hate horror flix.
It would have been lovely if you could have been there too today - we had a lot of fun - as we always do when we dedicate a day to Jake and each other :) I hope you can see the video OK now.
Hey TL! How are you doing? I agree that Jake's face showed a myriad of emotions when he realised he was about to be questioned by someone who had personal knowledge of the who war on terror - it must have been daunting for Jake. Bear in mind this could have been five minutes after the Alison Hammond interview.
I don't understand what Jake's mask is supposed to represent. I certainly know he shouldn't have been driving in it.
I think the link works for you as I just changed it ;)
Yes, the link works fine now! WDW, I am not a horror movie fan at all but I have seen clips and pictures of Jason in a hockey mask. So I just thought Jake might be going for that kind of costume. I don't know, lol. I hope he took off the mask when they got past the paps. I don't think he would drive for very long in it.
Wow, that interview was short but very powerful. When Frank tells Jake about what happened to him. Wish it had been longer, but it was very interesting. Thanks again, Twistedlogic and WDW.
hey Get Real - I'm glad it's working OK now and that you got to see it. I would have loved more too, I really would. I can't get enough of Jake talking about Rendition.
Thanks very much for the Frank Gardner interview. He has a beautiful and expressive face, and good commentary, I would like to see more of him.
I feel despite "soft box office" as I guess it's called, for Rendition, that's being received well. Cf yesterday's NYT commentary by AOScott and Frank Gardner's respect for the film. Im not following every dinky review.
Yes the film might stir up anti-American feelings but also I believe respect that USA films are critiqing govt policies. Although as AOScott pointed out in his NYT article, much in war (and war related) films is metaphorical and vague.
Gorgeous picture of Jake on Telegraph. Lucky you guys who have it. Although I dont know what to do with the bike and bicep picture from Interview after Jake said, "that's not me. . . " well, I knew it wasnt, but to hear hinm SAY it was a horse of another color.
Glad you made it home safely WDE :):):)
Hey WDW! I'm fine thanks, apart from my head feeling like it's stuffed with cotton wool(whaddya mean you thought it was anyway?!;)
I hadn't thought about the Frank Gardner interview being within five minutes of Alison Hammond's! Must've been weird, to say the least.
Thanks for sorting out the YouTube link:) Sorry if it was something I did wrong. Remind me never to drink again;) Or remind Jake never to appear on TV when I'm out drinking;D
Good to hear from you Positively Pia - it is such a good commentary - just makes me want more :\ I agree with you about the reviews of Rendition - I'm trying not to let it bother me. As you say, such films are bound to upset some people. I'll always love the bike picture - As Jake said in the Telegraph, I think sometimes Jake doesn't realise just how good looking he is. I hope you had a good weekend :)
Hey Twisted Logic - not your fault at all! I think we've all been imbibing this weekend - Jake included - well, he was at a party... :)
Is it just me being pedantic (wouldn't be the first time!) or has anyone else been wanting to yell at the screen in several interviews, "Get with the programme,Jake, the clip says 7 thousand people not 5!". Just me then? Oh,ok.....
The same thought occurred to me,WDW,that Frank may have been the next interviewer up after Alison Hammond which would have made for a bizarre and disconcerting juxtaposition. Jake would still be amused but shell-shocked and incredulous from the Alison treatment, bless her, and then in comes Frank, who I always think just exudes a natural air of authority when he's working.
You can actually see the "oh my God,how exactly are they setting me up now?" look in his eyes when Frank says he isn't a film critic, rapidly replaced by a look of surprise and suitable respect when Frank outlines exactly how and why he came to be wheelchair-bound and has been sent here to interview a Hollywood star.
There is a certain air of gravitas about the way Jake answers Frank questions which pleases me,because he was obviously spurred on to "up his game" by an interviewer, for once at least his intellectual equal, and with life experiences to command respect and admiration.
I'm sure each interviewer on the conveyor belt was given just a small allotted time slot to question Jake, but it's such a shame that we didn't get to see more of Jake talking to a man whom I'm sure he would have found fascinating and would have brought out some great insights in Jake.
Glad you had such a great afternoon with the girls and your other half,WDW. Intrigued as to the ingredients for a Cosmo,I did a bit of googling and came upon a site www.in-the-spirit.co.uk/cocktails with a whole raft of recipes for exotic tipples. I thought you might like to check it out ;-)
Hi Nit-picky Nadine - Y'know, I'm so glad you mentioned that about the '5,000 people in London' - everytime I hear Jake say this I scream inside - 'That's 7,000!!!!' How can Jake not remember this?! Relieved it's not just me :)
I definiely agree about the mixture of emotions that pass across his face when Frank introduces himself - and respect and admiration are clear. It makes me realise what a strange affair of day of press junkets must be. Who knows what you're going to get next (reminds me of that scene in Notting Hill) and it fills me with admiration for how Jake can deal with whatever gets thrown at him. Jake can certainly think on his feet.
I had a great afternoon, thanks! Cosmos have become the cocktail of choice after the pictures of Jake in Hawaii drinking the distinctive dark pink cocktail. It's the taste you get after the orange is burnt off the the top... Ruby and I are very keen on trying an Aqua Velva. I have the recipe printed out ready to take to a cocktail bar... Thanks for the link :D
Aww poor Jake with the 5000/7000 people! Maybe he's like me and just doesn't have a head for numbers and figures. He did say maths was his worst subject at school. I couldn't remember how many people Meryl Streep said either so Jake has my sympathy on this one:)
Oh, all right Twisted Logic - I'll let him off then - After all, he makes up for it in lots of other ways in Rendition :)
LOL! Yes, I'd say Jake definitely makes up for a lot of things in Rendition. But, y'know, Jake, if you're reading and feel really bad about it,you could get your kit off in Brothers to make it up to WDW and Nadine;)
Now you're talkin',TL!
Jake, if you're reading and feel really bad about it,you could get your kit off in Brothers to make it up to WDW and Nadine;)
This would be greatly appreciated, Jake :)
So that's settled then, is it? Jake has to get his kit off in Brothers? I can live with that! I'm thinking of a towel clad Jake getting out of the shower, slowly walking over to the sink and then the camera just behind him showing him in the mirror shaving the beard off:D Anyone got Jim Sheridan's email address?;D
I agree that the beard should only be necessary for the first five minutes of the film... Can you hear us, Jim? Well, it's night for me - see you tomorrow :D
Night, WDW.Speak to you tomorrow:)
I'm off too in a minute, just need a SNIT fix first. I'm in a Brokeback frame of mind...
I hope you don't mind if I occasionally share some tidbits here, Kate. I can't even stomach DC anymore, so I have nowhere to post this stuff :)
This Variety tidbit mentions a Jake/Jessica Biel movie called "Nailed." The link goes to a 2001 movie, so I don't know if this is a remake, a mistake or a new idea.
I saw Rendition today, and the audience was really into it - it was great. Seemed like there was a real appreciation for the material and for the acting. Lots of laughs and gasps. It's a shame more people won't see Rendition.
So good to see you UV, you've been missed - thanks for sharing here :)
I vaguely remember hearing something about Nailed a long time ago. I'll have a look and see what I can find later on.
I definitely agree that Rendition's audiences seem to be at odds with its reviewers which means not enough people are going to see it. It deserves much better.
Morning everyone :)
Oh, I forgot to say thanks to you and TwistedLogic for the video!
Also, in case you were wondering, Jake is probably a happy guy this morning, since the Red Sox won the World Series last night :)
Interesting mini-review from James King, which basically boils down to "It's good, well acted, but hasn't made enough money so Hollywood won't be making any more films on this subject".
Hey UV - Congrats to the Red Sox and all their fans! Jake must've brought them some luck :)
Thanks for that bmg - Maybe this'll mean we're in for a glut of HW froth. That would be a shame. I could do with more films like Zodiac and Rendition.
Discouraging news on the Beard front,WDW. I "spoke" to someone who had seen the original Danish "Brothers" last night and in that the character Jake is to reprise for Jim Sheridan keeps his beard throughout the film. JS may have different ideas, but it may be that we have to endure Jake's beard for some while longer yet :-(
I'm sure Jake will be delighted about the Redsox. I just love the Yanks (no,seriously I do!) for all their foibles (and it's not like we Brits are perfect). It just makes me smile that they run a sporting competition called the World Series in which I believe only American teams take part. Bless 'em,they never fail to think big! :-)
G'morning Nadine, Ive been chided by Canadians for USAans calling ourselves "Americans" so I dont do that anymore. :):):)
Damm, someone better email Jim Sheridan and let him know the beard shaving scene, as described by twistedlogic, would lift the film into Oscar winning territory, and is probably intregal to the plot (as rewritten by Gyllenhallics ;-) )
Morning everyone. :) Hope everyone has a great start to the week.
Anyone else think of what Jake's costume was? Again, I think it was a souped up Jason mask. Otherwise I have no clue, lol.
UltraViolet, so good to see you here!! I mostly lurk at DC, but your posts have been missed. Hope we see you around here often! :)
Hi Nadine - Oh dear :( I'm hoping for a major re-write then!
Morning Positively Pia :D
Couldn't agree more Anon - maybe that's the solution - we need to write the script for 'crucial scenes'
Hi Get Real! I'm going to have to see if I can find a picture of this Jason getup. I have no experience of horror movies so I don't know what jake was trying to look like - not hugely impressed though :)
See you all later!
Thanks, get real. I miss DC, but I don't miss the hate.
A pic of Jake with the original WDWer.
I can't believe RDJ has a son old enough to be in a band! Now I feel old.
Hey, UV!!!! (waves!) Really good to see you here.I always looked forward to your posts, and I am really happy you've decided to pop in here.
I think the beard info might be correct. (ughhh!)I read somewhere Jake 's character grows the beard after he is released from his three year jail term. Maybe they'll film backwards and when we finally see him without the beard, we'll know they are about finished. LOL!
I have been doing everything I can to get people to go see Rendition. I think it will do pretty good overseas and I think DVD sales will do well. There was another movie that came out called, In the Valley of Elah with Tommy Lee Jones that was incredible and I don't think it did well either. The Kingdom did very well, tho. Jamie Foxx and Jennfer Garner. In that film, there was a clear enemy. Things got blown up. There were clear heros and villains. I've heard it was very good. I am not slamming it. Just that if there is a movie about the Iraq/Terrorism stuff, the successful ones will be like The Kingdom. Seems like the American public doesn't much care for "thoughtful" films right now, (if we ever did!)but I am hopeful they will keep getting made.
So we're stuck with the beard for the best part of a year then? Damn!*sulks* I'm sorry but I don't see how Jake's character having a beard can possibly be more integral to the script than my shaving scene idea;) Still, Jake has been known to follow my advice that I've given him here on ocassion, so there's still hope;D
Hi everyone! So glad to have made it home back to you all and Jake :)
Glad to see the welcoming of UV and also glad to see some happy, happy pics of Jake and our very own RDJ - fabulous. I know he's not 'our very own' but there's a special place for RDJ on WDW.
Hi Bobbyanna - I'm in happy denial about the 'Brothers Beard' - at the moment I'm preferring to believe that, like Gavin, Jim Sheridan will know he has a hot patootie (I have no idea how to spell that) and he should uncover Jake's face as soon as possible. But on a slightly more serious note, I do think Jake's version of Brothers will not be the same interpretation as the original.
I have little interest in seeing The Kingdom, despite Jamie Foxx, and maybe that shows that I too can be overly influenced by critics. Or that I only want to see one film on the topic and that's Rendition. I think it is true that people may only one to see one of these films and it's a real shame that Rendition isn't the one. Although having said that - Rendition is still the No 3 film in London tonight. It is being appreciated.
It's a shame it has to compete against such rubbish as Saw 4004...
Hey Twisted Logic! It's true! We've said here before that Jake should shave and then he does so I have faith in your influence ;)
WDW and TL, I can only hope that James Sheridan sees the error of his ways and uncovers Jake's...face. OTOH, it might be that even with the beard, James Sheridan after having seen the opening scenes of Jake in Rendition, will decide that Gavin was really onto something and uncover more than his beautiful face...Keep Hope Alive! LOL!
Personally, I feel like there ought to be a clause in Jake's contracts that requires certain scenes to be included in all his films...similar to the ones we saw in Rendition, Jarhead, Moonlight Mile...even Proof...but not with Gwynnie.
Bobbyanna - I definitely hope Jim is listening and we get treated to more of the scenes Gavin gave us in Rendition. Yes, I'll sign on to the Keep Hope Alive movement! And yes - not with Gwynnie ;)
HI WDW,
I meant to post my thanks to you last night when I was over, and watched the Culture show interview. I just wish I could have had more minutes with Mr. Gardner...and of course Jake:)
About the mask, my son was peering over my shoulder and urging me off the computer yesterday, while carrying on about how much he liked Jake's pimped out Jason mask:):)
