Jake on Heath - 'It made me drawn to him, just as you are in the movie'

Without doubt, the Toronto International Film Festival was a major highlight of an incredible year, for Jake and for WDW. But in this lull, between the Christmas celebrations and the end of this amazing year, let's take a look at a video interview of a young and stunning Jake, recorded at TIFF in 2005. In addition to talking about Brokeback Mountain and Proof, you can also enjoy the preparations for the video with a tired but uncomplaining Jake.

Jake is asked how he and Heath were able to trust each other so completely: 'Heath is the sort of guy who wears his heart on his shoulder... he's very sensitive and he guards it anyway he can but he's not that great at guarding it and it made me drawn to him, just as you are in the movie and I was in the same way.'

On whether Jake preferred sheep herding or rodeoing: 'Sheep are dumb and bulls are angry - I would much rather go with dumb than angry.'

Jake also got the chance to talk about Proof, which was on show at TIFF in 2005 as well. Having said that Jake rarely discusses Proof, it's rather good to hear Jake given an opinion of working with Gwyneth Paltrow: 'When you work with certain actors, when you work with Heath, you don't always really know what he's going to deliver. With Gwyneth it's funny. She'll do three or four takes and they'll all be brilliant and will be done with her coverage. And I've never really worked with an actor like that before, ever. And I just saw her recently after not seeing her for a year... and she's just so sweet... For a person who has been bombarded with so much at such a young age, she's such a classy person.'

Best line? 'My math teacher would be, and I think is, devastated and hurt that I played that role in a movie.'

I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday!

  1. Hey WDW, and everyone. Happy Christmas and hope everyone is having a lovely time. It's been a good one for me, having two young children who's eyes shone with wonder on christmas eve, when we went outside hoping for a glimpse of Santa on his sleigh. Of course, I have eaten too much and drank too much, and it seems I'll be doing that again tomorrow.

Thanks for such wonderful posts over the past few days, and TL's wonderful post about Rendition. I love this BBM video too, never seen it before. I got a new mobile phone for Christmas and want the BBM theme tune as my ring tone, just got to work out how to do that now. Oh I also got two Jake calenders too. Can never have enough Jake for Christmas.

  2. Hi Christie! I'm glad to hear you had such a great Christmas. I'm lookig forward to more indulgence tomorrow myself, although I may go and see 'I Am Legend' as well.

I'm so pleased that you've enjoyed the Christmas posts :D I'd never seen this video before either and I think Jake looks so beautiful in it, he makes my heart melt.

Two calendars! I have just the one, but I don't hink I can part with last year's...

  3. Hi WDW, hope you and everyone had a wonderful holiday.

This is such a gem of an interview; Brokeback meant so much to me and it was the first film I ever saw Jake in. I always love to hear the thoughts of those involved in making it, and that Jake acknowledges how much we were drawn to Ennis, just as Jack was. Can't believe it's been two years since I saw it, and I love it just as much as ever - one of my all-time favorite films. :)

Jake looks magnificently handsome here too - he's got the greatest facial bone structure, and the best "look" with his eyes. :) Thanks!

  4. Wonderful tidbits you give us. Since one of the things that drew me to Jake is Brokeback (and October Sky before that) I can never get enough info about BBM and what Jake thought about working with Heath.

We rarely hear about Proof and I thought it was a pretty good movie.

    Linda :-)

  5. Morning everyone! Warm and dreak here today and time to get dragged round the sales :(

Hi Bertie - Jake is so beautiful in this video, simply stunning. Seeing Jake so beautiful saying he was drawn to Ennis just as we and Jack were is very moving.

Hey Linda - I'm never going to tire of talking about Brokeback - it's my second anniversary coming up in January. I can hardly believe it.

  6. Morning WDW,
What a fantastic interview. Thank you:) I'm always interested in behind the scenes information about movies; Jake talking about how he bonded with Heath on set just makes my day.

I had read some of what he said, about Heath wearing his heart on his sleeve, in an article some time ago, but I had no idea there was an video available.
*May I squeeee at the beauty of the Gyllengod;)*

Jake is so at ease on camera; from the beginning of the taping, with the assistant dusting off his jacket, and the interviewer's frustrated cursing, to God knows what kind of noise, going on off screen; Jake remains calm, polite and courteous to the frazzled interviewer and everyone involved.

Thank goodness she didn't ask about the "kiss"

    TY again:)

  7. Thanks for this interview WDW! It's fun to see the pre-interview footage, just how he interacts with the interviewer, before he's "on the job". I love his sense of humor - "It's a really angry giant". :) It's nice to hear him talk about Proof. We don't often hear him do that. Then again, maybe with 3 movies coming out at about the same time, Proof just got pushed into the background (by the interviewers) because BBM and Jarhead were more controversial. BBM is still the best movie I've ever seen.

He's so handsome! And when he bites his lower lip (like in the first pic) I just want to eat him up. :D

  8. What Sass said, above.

And how was the DD-L film, Sass?

    ReplyDelete
  9. p.s. also, what Neely said.

  10. Hi everyone! Good to have a quiet afternoon, doing some Jaking while eating liquor chocolates :D

Morning Sass - please squeee away! I think Jake deserves it in this video :D He did stay so calm and collected, didn't he? Sigh...

Hey Neely I like the moments before too. It shows how rushed these junkets are. If you're gonna eat Jake up, remember to leave some of him for the rest of us ;)

    Morning Pia :D

  11. What a lovely video! I truly love hearing Jake talk about BBM and his bond with Heath. Like many of you that movie really introduced me to Jake and holds a very special place in my heart. I also liked hearing about Proof. Jake never ceases to amaze me, he is beautiful inside and out. :)

  12. Thank you so much for this video, WDW! I had some trouble getting it to play but I got there in the end:) Love to hear Jake talking about BBM and Heath *sigh* And love that line about prefering "dumb" to "angry" - there's hope for me yet! And now I know how to get away with stroking Jake's back if I'm ever that close, just tell him he has dirt on his jacket;)

Hope everyone's recovering from Christmas :) Personally, if I never see a turkey again it'll be too soon! And the same goes for Cadbury's Roses, only two boxes of the stuff left to get through;D

    ReplyDelete
  13. ETA: I ditto what Sass and Neely said! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hi Get Real! There's something very special listening to, and watching, Jake talk about what Brokeback means to him.

Hey there TL - glad you got it to play in the end :D That's so funny about the 'dumb' and the jacket! I'm still wading through this huge box of chocolates, imagining each one as a Jake kiss does wonders :D

    ReplyDelete
  15. Lol WDW! Thanks for the choc eating tip ;D *reaching for the Roses box* Mmmm...if Jake was a chocolate he'd definitely be Strawberry Cream ;) Unfortunately they're always the first to disappear;(

    ReplyDelete
  16. Woh TL - you've got me thinking now. The box I'm eating is so luxurious it comes with an instruction book and a grade the chocolate chart. One chocolate contains a liquor made from the rare cloudberry 'which only grows in the wilderness of northern latitudes' - a chocolate that special has Jake written all over it - maybe I'll save it for him... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dumb versus angry? I guess Jake's math teacher(s?) would be sad to hear that. But it can be solved: Jake could go back to college and study math until he got it right. I agree with Stephen G. that leaving college after two years was a bad move for Jake. He didn't have to finish with a full course load, but many people have gone to college part-time while carrying on whatever careers they had.

    ReplyDelete
  18. WDw, that sounds like some posh box of chocolates, unlike my common Roses and Milk Tray! No instruction manual needed for me - remove wrapper, put in mouth, eat! I like the sound of "cloudberry" though, what does it taste like?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi Paulh - speaking for myself I am so glad I nver have to suffer maths at school again and I would never wish to inflict that on Jake. I've tended to think the other way - that Jake has had far more opportunities to learn and grow through the experiences he has and can have in his chosen profession than he ever could have had at college. The world is at Jake's feet - the chances and opportunities out there for him - just incredible to think about. I've never been a big fan of formal education, possibly because I've had too much of it. Personally, I think Jake made the right choice - and, as you say Paul, one can always go back into education if one wishes.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hey TL - I'm too nervous to eat the cloudberry chocolate - what if I don't do it justice? What if it's the last cloudberry chocolate I'll ever eat?

    ReplyDelete
  21. If the chocolate is causing you that much angst WDW, I can only think of one solution - save it for me! ;D I will have no such worries.

    ReplyDelete
  22. You're welcome to the cherry chocolates Ruby - I hate cherries, ugh - but you can keep your mitts off my cloudberries... :)

I was in a shop today and there was a big woolly hat for sale with Atticus written on it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I see your dilemma, WDW! Maybe you should just save it for your next Red Carpet meeting with Jake and ask him to share it with you;) I would give him my last Rolo without a moment's hesitation but it's not quite in the same league;)

    ReplyDelete
  24. That's true TL - Maybe a cloudberry chocolate is the perfect gift for someone who has everything? I'll have to find a little ribbon for it :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, that sounds perfect - a cloudberry chocolate in a little heart shaped box with a ribbon round it :)

Btw, according to Wikipedia (I know, I'm sad and bored!) cloudberries " are golden-yellow, soft and juicy, and are rich in vitamin C. When eaten fresh, cloudberries have a distinctive tart taste. When over-ripe, they have a creamy texture and flavor somewhat like yogurt" and in Sweden "cloudberries are also used as ice cream or waffles topping". Maybe we should re-name them Gyllenberries:)

    Mmm...Jake, chocolate, ice cream...time for a lie down;D

    ReplyDelete
  26. You inspired me TL and I ate or savoured one of my two cloudberry - no, Gyllenberry Chocolates - and it was gorgeous:D One left for Jake... On the taster scorecard, which I'm going to send back to Hotel Chocolat I may well advise them of the fruit name change.

I'm torn between doing a TDAT or Jarhead post tonight - anyone have a strong opinion?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sometimes you just leave the gate wiiide open, WDW :)

Jarhead for the bulk. TDAT for the Nichols *

Where's that promised Highway post, eh? Eh?

    Cloudberries - veh Swedish!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Glad you liked the Gyllenberry chocolate, WDW! With all these two bit celebs bringing out perfumes and clothing ranges,Jake should bring out a range of chocolates (especially as Cadbury's passed on my idea for Jarhead Jake advent calendars:( ). Speaking of Jarhead, that (unsurprisingly!) gets my vote for tonight's post, but you know I love all your posts, so I guess I can live with TDAT if you go with that;D

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anouska - shouldn't you be putting your feet up with a glass of plonk *)

TL - you are full of fab ideas! Jake chocolates, sod the cologne or clothing range :D They'd have to be dark chocolate with soft centres obviously...

OK, I'll go with the kind of consensus and go all Swoffy and save Wet Sam for later :P

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh yes Anouska, forgot to say, I haven't forgotten my Highway promise... hmmm, I'll work on that :D

    Opened a bottle :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Any Scots among us? A friend has been telling me about Hogmanay = & good luck if the "first footer" across your threshold is a dark and handsome man. Hint hint WDW.

As for tonight's post - well its snowing here, and in the Sangre de Christo Mountains, N.M. and

    Where is Donnie? :) :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I tried to admire TL's ideas twice, but blogger wouldn't let me :(

Yes, the evening glass has been poured :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. p.s. I mean New Years Eve, if that's not clear: first dark handsome man across yr threshold.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's true, Pia.* We'll need a virtual first-footer. I vote for Pilot. Don't want to scupper WDW's New Year plans, though :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anouska, if Ida joined you in your evening glass (considering time difference) Id a been an alcoholic long ago.

Just kidding. I have nothing against a lunchtime tipple.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi Positively Pia - yes, and he has to be carrying coal too :D As New Year's Eve is also my birthday I think it would be particularly nice of Jake to oblige, I'm sure I can find some coal lying about...

So I need to do a New Year's Eve post about a tall, dark, handsome man - that's gonna be tricky!!

    Waves at Anouska *

    ReplyDelete
  37. We can photoshop the coal - well, someone can photoshop the coal!

    ReplyDelete
  38. skids into WDW..........

    Did someone mention Pilot? :D :D :D

WDW, did you know that 'my town' has a Hotel Chocolat shop? You have made me curious about the cloudberry so I'm going chocolat shopping tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey Ruby - no, nobody mentioned Pilot... I admire your self-sacrifice in going to such lengths to research the Swedish Gyllenberry chocolate :D

    ReplyDelete
  40. AHEM!! Nobody mentioned Pilot? :D

Ruby, I'm going to research it next time I pass Hotel Chocolat, too :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. hmmm, I thought I heard someone calling Pilot's name. Must have been me in my dreams. :D

There are no lengths to which I won't go for the sublime combination of Jake and chocolate!

  42. Can you photoshop some aqua velvas for your b.d., WDW? I bought TWO bottles of tequilla, was going to give one to a friend for Xmas, but got mad at him: and I also bought a bottle of "the blue shit". Havent had the nerve nor occasion to mention this to anyone, much less open the bottles. I purchased these on a whim, to impress Jonathan the delivery boy that I have an interesting life - which I do, actually -

    etcetecetec just kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I now have an incredible image in my head of Jake and chocolate - together :D Maybe we should do some choccie tasting some time... to go along with the cosmo tasting.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well, maybe I should not only Photoshop some Aqua Velvas (I say I while actually meaning not me) Pia but even drink some of the stuff. I do have the 'Blue Shit'. I have the vodka. But I'm missing the sprite because I don't like it. Is there an alternative?

    ReplyDelete
  45. There was Acqua Velva cologne, that was blue as well. :)

I can get the cloudberry chocs tomorrow for sampling later.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Great idea Acqua Nouska and great name too ;) Don't think I fancy drinking that blue stuff though...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hey everyone! Jake alert: repeat Regis and Kelly tomorrow AM for those who need to see it again or missed it.

It's been crazy over here with holiday cheer and more to come.

Lovin' the Heath posts of course, can never get enough. Thanks WDW.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Good to see you CWG! Thanks for the Regis and Klly news. I always love to talk about Heath :D

    ReplyDelete
  49. I wouldnt add Sprite to anything, thats why I decided upon blue curaco and teqilla. Sprite, even soda, is for pussies. IMHO

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thanks Pia, I agree. So all you need is the blue stuff and tequila? In that case, I have all the ingredients I need except the little umbrellas :D

    ReplyDelete
  51. Blimey you guys, aqua velva is supposed to be a long drink. not a shooter! :D

I have little umbrellas! But none of the other incredients!

    ReplyDelete
  52. We could make a lot of it, and then it would be a long drink Ruby?

    I need umbrellas...

    ReplyDelete
  53. Aww, he was drawn to Heath. From the very beginning of BBM promotion you could see that they were very fond of each other. I hope they are still as close.

Jake was full of praise for Gwyneth, i personally don't like her very much.
Thanks wdw, hope you and everyone else here had a great holiday! :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hi Anon - thanks very much and happy holidays to you too :D

    ReplyDelete
  55. I have a feeling that I'm one of the few Jake fans who really enjoyed "Proof." If Jake won't talk much about "Proof," and most of his fans are not especially fond of the film, then the few of us who liked it have to speak up.
    :-)

Mental illness is a terrible ordeal, not just for the patient, but for everyone who has to deal with the situation--a life spent walking on eggshells. It's a form of incarceration. I always had that feeling of Anthony Hopkins and Gwynneth Paltrow having little cages around them in that movie, and Jake was trying to get through the bars to liberate them, but not knowing how to do it. :-(

There's a gentle, scholarly geeky goofiness to Jake in several scenes. I don't think he ever equalled it in any other films that he did.

It can't have been easy for Gwynneth Paltrow to play such a difficult character. How do you demonstrate outwardly the inner turmoil and confusion that you're feeling, without seeming like a b*tch?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hi Paulh - you're not on your own here to stand up for Proof or Gwyneth in Proof. It just shows how this film can draw out so many different responses. I know very well how mental illness can devastate lives and familes, I personally have some trouble with Gwyneth's interest in her role. I have always had the feeling that she was bored at this point with the role, having done it on stage, and her pregnancy, with the resulting sickness she felt and her isolation away from home, meant her heart was elsewhere (not surprisingly).

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi again WDW and everyone,
I came back to say hi, and to tell you and pia, who asked, how much I enjoyed Daniel Day Lewis's performance in "There Will Be Blood."

I am overfond of Paul Thomas Anderson as a director, so I was primed to enjoy myself, and thank goodness I did.

DDL's performance had me pined to my seat; the movie never seemed long and I didn't want it to be over.

I will have see it again; it's way too intense to digest in one seating.

Please tell me about the chocolates. You make me so hungry. If you have already, I'm sorry to ask again. *brain ded*
Is eating Cadbury chocolates a holiday tradition in the UK?
I've always eaten them, though mostly as eggs, around Easter; they are scrumptious.

More Proof notes, and why not...:)

Proof is a hard movie to watch even with Jake's performance, which is fantastic.

Gwyneth's performance ranked high in my book, because I could relate to and feel the pain and inner turmoil in her character's life.

I've had mental illness--still do, of a developmental nature--in my personal family life, and so was immediately drawn in by her portrayal of all that she felt about herself and her dad.
I could empathize with her and her doubts about her emotional health, and with her angst, when faced with her sister's take charge, let me get you better persona.

God deliver me from those types; though he didn't see fit to
deliver me in my own family;)
Off now to read your new post.

Please allow me to me wish everyone in the UK a Happy belated Boxing day.
I'm will also have to refresh my knowledge base about that day ASAP:)
    xoxoxo

  58. Hi Sass! I'm having some blogger probs tonight, glad your comment got through :D Good to hear that you enjoyed Daniel's performance. I must see that when it reaches us.

Chocolates are definitely a big part of a British Christmas :D Not necessarily Cadburys though. I've been enjoying a super luxury box of Hotel Chocolat chocolates which are about as good as you can get! As a result I've eaten nothing else for most of the day :)

Thanks for sharing your opinions on Gwyneth - it's good to here all the different views on her performance in Proof.

And thanks for the Boxing Day wishes - always a day for travelling or being lazy. Hope you're having a great week *)
