Nailed needs men, Tom is my slavename, and the Joker leaves his mark

The Nailed production may have gone underground - in a manner of speaking - but it's still going on full steam ahead, judging by today's call for more extras. Now they want 'adult males and senior citizens', for scenes to be shot this Thursday. Another site elaborated - the project needs men aged 30-80. I guess that rules me out then.

I saw in your eyes that you hate the world. I hate it too.

Last night's post led to a discussion of The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger and Holden so I thought I'd include a little about The Good Girl here.

One reason why Jake Gyllenhaal took the role was because Maggie fell for it: 'When Jake was approached at the Sundance Film Festival for the role of Holden, his sister urged him to consider it... 'I told him to take that person seriously,' recalls Maggie Gyllenhaal. 'The script is so smart and (director) Miguel Arteta is so awesome. We're good critics for each other, in a way,' she adds. 'I think that he, more than anybody, can see in my work what is honest and maybe dishonest and vice versa.''

The role of Holden was difficult to cast, Miguel Arteta said, because 'You need a guy whose sadness you can really believe in the beginning, and you can believe how deranged he gets by the end of the movie... It was hard, but Jake has the range.'

Jake has sometimes spoken about how he is not too good at auditions but his approach for the Good Girl audition was different and, one would have thought, not promising. ''In a real actorly moment, Jake got really wrapped up and he picked up a chair and put a hole in the wall, just threw it against the wall,' says Arteta. 'And Jennifer and I, who had heard about the new paint job, we just turned to Mike in horror. Mike was like, 'He should get the part, but I hope he pays me back for our wall.''

In this interview, Jake also mentiones The Catcher in the Rye: 'It was actually the first book I related to when I was young.'

Incidentally, The Good Girl featured Jennifer Aniston's very first love scene. Brad Pitt, her husband at the time, had joked 'Be nice to the guy. He's just a kid!', while Jake kidded(?) 'That's the only reason I did the movie' (People, 2002). Of Jennifer, Jake said 'Audiences will be blown away by Jennifer. She really goes further as an actor than she ever has, and it was a blast to do this.'

Interestingly, Jake has on several occasions compared his experience of filming Brokeback Mountain's love scenes to diving into a pool. Jennifer described her Good Girl experience in the same way, saying of Jake and herself: 'We met each other and adored each other right off the bat. It was easy. As for the bedroom scene, we just bit the bullet, man, it was quick. Miguel (Arteta, the director) had it all set up and ready to go. It was two takes and we were done. You just dive in fast and furious as you can. Like diving into a cold pool' (Seattle Post, 2002). Jennifer told the Sun 'He's so young it felt wrong - like doing it with a child... I was shaking.'

Jake and Gwyn

Also yesterday we heard Gwyneth Paltrow talk about her admiration for Maggie Gyllenhaal. To repay the compliment, here Jake is asked about what it was like for him to work with actors and directors of such a high calibre: 'In some ways it's overwhelming but in other ways it's exactly the kind of steps you want to be taking so you can learn from people who are at the top of your profession. I've always thought that Gwyneth Paltrow is one of the best actresses around, and I think that Ang Lee is one of the most intelligent and sensitive directors. So these are great moments for me and I'm lucky to be getting these kinds of chances when I haven't done that many films yet. But I'll make the leap as long as I don't blow it! (Laughs)'

The Joker leaves his mark

Last night some lucky people who were able to decipher some mindbending 'clues' that would have baffled Zodiac hunter Graysmith himself saw a new trailer for The Dark Knight. Not only that, some of them walked away with movie reels marked by the Joker himself. One witness to the London viewing has put pictures on his site, which show the Joker's mark on the reels. I find it all mesmerising but also, seeing Heath's face like this, on these reels, it's very chilling. But thanks to the blogger for sharing his experience.

Hey everyone!! Wouldn't it be great if they were casting 21 year old females with specifically the name Nicole who lived in Columbia..haha that would be great :)

Hi Nicole! That would be great. I think it would be greater though if they admitted their need for females of a certain age living in southern England :D

or if they admitted their need for everyone that posts on WDW..that would be even greater! imagine all of us filming a scene with Jake..

Great post!

Always love seeing Jen Aniston with Jake... I thought Jake was amazing in "The Good Girl", even though I haven't "fallen" for him at that time, it is the first film that I really noted him as a good actor... the sadness is so genuine and you feel that his character was misunderstood... although yeah, that line "Tom is my slavename" totally cracked me up too... and also when Jennifer's character relay that all Tom/Holden's stories ends up with the protagonist dead :P

oh... and the "The Good Girl" DVD has some of my favourite Jake bloopers, he was laughing like a 10-year-old in one of the scenes with Jennifer in the car. super cute X1000

Yes, Nicole: or rather calling ALL nubile ("ready to marry" whether you're already married or not) women of all ages - - -

When filling out forms as to so-called "marital" status I always write in "nubile" - :D

Anyway, from where, WDW, comes the first Jake pix lookin' very nubile haha? Makes me want, goin' back to yesterdays post on "books" - to see Jake in the adapted film versions of my favorite writers. One of them is Louise Erdrich. Just sayin' And as Ive also intimated, I love Annie P, and would love to see Jake play Diamond Felts in The Mud Below.

Thanks WDW and Ruby and Bobbyanna for thots on what it means to start up a Production Co. right away. Heath was "producing" music videos. I expect if you've got a "production company" as some kind of laundering operation - ???? - you are called to "produce". Am I being cynical? I gather all of us are mostly only musing on this issue but y'alls musings feel more informed than my own, so thanks.

Must be great to have so much opportunity to flex one's gifts. How will Jake use the reapings of his talent? Very well, Im sure!

Have been re-reading old NYTimes initerview with Jake - he anticipates a long career'

I'll drink to that!

Good idea, Nicole :D

Hi Winterbird! I find The Good Girl pretty harrowing so I don't watch it too often but I thought Jake and Jen were incredible together - it felt to me that they portrayed this real 'edge of precipice' feeling. It's difficult to explain. I need to see it again to appreciate some of the humour instead of just feeling so sad for Holden!

Hi Pia! I have no idea where the nubile Jake pic comes from, it just grabbed me today when I was looking through some old pictures. I don't think you're being cynical about the production companies - I think that's why they're set up.

I'll drink to that too!

Count me in on a drink to Jake's very long and successful career!

Nicole, seems the filming in SC has gone into secure mode. Which is good for the actors but not for you or us, lol. Here's hoping you have another wonderful Jake encounter.

Intense picture of Heath as Joker. It sure will be bittersweet to see TDK.

Love Jake and Jennifer from TGG. They had great chemistry and Jake was excellent as "Tom". He sure goes method when auditioning, hehe. :p

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real :D Dustin would probably approve of Jake's auditioning routine :D I suppose smashing a hole in the producer's brand new wall shows you care...

I'm missing the Nailed sightings - here's hoping they move outside again soon :D For all my doubts about the movie itself, I have enjoyed following its filming.

Hello, Wet Dark!

Good Girl is an excellent film. One of my favorites!
Jen I wanted to make more films of this type.
She and the Jake showed an excellent chemistry.

I will leave the link to the new trailler of Batman. A Brazilian managed to shoot.
The quality is not good!
I know it is illegal, but not wait to see more scenes of the heath.

Hi Monica :D I love the chemistry between Jake and Jen - it'd be so great to see them in something else together, preferably something lighter! Thanks for the link :)

Evening all,

I too will be toasting to Jake's long career.

I loovvveee TGG. Something about it was so raw. Jakes acting was impeccable. Not to mention his sad beautiful eyes said so much without a word.

God, I wish they would work together again. They had such great chemistry.

Good morning everyone :) I finally find some time to dedicate to my daily WDW reading!

Thank you WDW for this post :D I totally agree with you Birdgirl, I so love this movie too, I know it's a sad story, but I adore Jake's acting, it's amazing, heartbreaking. And I sometime identify myself in Justine, you know, those days when you'd love to be anywhere else but where you are..unfortunately I have no colleague looking like Jake to cheer me up :-/ (well in case, hopefully with no such a tragic ending). And I love Jake and Jen together aswell, real chemistry yeah ;)

Btw I started reading Catcher in the Rye few days ago..so far I'm not sure how I'm liking it, before that I read To Kill A Mocking Bird, which I've loved so much (felt the need to watch the movie too, Gregory Peck is awesome there) and they've definitely different stories and styles, so I'll see, looking forward to finishing it ;)

Have a great day guys! :-*

Morning everyone! Running late today...

Hi Bird Girl! I feel inspired to watch TGG again although I do find parts of it hrad to watch - maybe I won't watch the end....

Morning Good Girl! Hmmm, imagine seeing Jake in your office each morning - what a way to start the day :D I'm going to have to get another copy of The Catcher in the Rye. It's included in Waterstone's life-changing books display here.

Have a good day everyone :D

*good girl* said...

Hi WDW! Yes definitely a great way to start the day seeing Jake everymorning...I'd probably be fired in a couple of days for not working and spending all the time following him around the office :P

Well if CITR is considered a life-changing book I definitely have to finish it! Thanks for this info, the reading's even more appealing now ;)

Oh I forgot, the first pic on today's post is WONDERFUL! Never seen it before, that's breathtaking!!! How I love those eyes...eeehh...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Good Girl! The picture is gorgeous - I think it's from Venice.

I could really do with Jake in the office right now - everyone is sick or off and I'm on my tod. I could put him on the phones and I could just sit there and look appreciative :D

G'morning sweetpeeps!

Jake-in-the-morning jumpstarts my day, for sure.

Read the first page of CITR on line, to recall the flavor. Life-changing at the time, both for readers and writers, I gather, but life and culture has changed so very much and I think I'll re-read Huckleberry Finn instead.

Although Im curious about others' reactions to the book in prsenttime. The character of Holden, himself, remains true to life in the present, though - as in The Good Girl, and Donnie Darko is a "catcher in the rye" also, I guess.

"Why so serious?" Pia? Because I miss the guv'nor of my heart.

Gonna be a sunny day - where's my skateboard?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Pia :D Can we borrow some of your sunshine please? I bought CITR at lunch so after many years I'll give that another read. If it gets too depressing I've got a historical thriller as well :D Hope you have a good day :)

Love this post,WDW! I really enjoyed the Youtube Good Girl vid which you unearthed - you truly are the Gyllenhaalic equivalent of a bloodhound, finding us little Jake-gems in various formats from all over the Internet and beyond.

My desperation to revisit "The Good Girl"is reaching fever pitch, but I'm thwarted at the moment because I have a strange man on top of me...actually he's a really nice workman doing maintenance on our roof but as I need to keep popping out with biccies and cups of tea or to show him where things are I can't settle down to fall in love with Holden and Justine all over again. I'm not sure he'd understand if I went to the door grizzling because Holden's just been shot.
:-( This is a black comedy with far more emphasis on the black than on the comedy and I need uninterrupted time alone to experience it properly.

It's a lovely and much needed pick-me-up after the film to watch the gag reel showing Jake and Jennifer getting the Gyllengiggles. They have such wonderful chemistry,on screen and off, much as I enjoyed Jake in "Proof" I didn't get the thrill of the connection that we saw between Jake and Jen and,of course,Jake and Heath.

Talking of Heath,is it me,or does anyone else find those scratched film reel shots given away at the London event really poignant and eerie in the light of recent events? Still in wistful mode here, maybe it's a good job I've got to save "The Good Girl" for another day.... :-(

It was sort of funny. I bitched about CITR the entire 1st half of the book. I kept saying to Mr. BG, "This is supposed to be a classic?” And he would respond "I told you it isn't very good." But at a certain point I felt emotionally attached to Holden. I started defending him profusely. I then realized I must have seen a bit of myself in him. I have never been able to fully explain it. Maybe it depends on the stage of your life. You don’t have to be a teenager. I certainly wasn’t.

I hope all of you new or re readers will have a similar experience.

As far as TGG goes, I rarely watch it until the end WDW. Sometimes I am the same way with BBM. Frankly I don't like it when Jake dies. It may be childish but hey, I am what I am. ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Back home - whatta day :/ But I managed to get quite a bit of Catcher read on the bus home :)

Hi Nadine! You're not the only one to feel like that seeing those pictures of Heath as the Joker, I felt like that too.

The Good Girl is definitely one of those films I need to feel in the right spirit to watch. I'm not sure I'm in it. I'm in an analytical Zodiac mood this evening :D Must be because I had to spend some time deciphering people's handwriting today...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bird Girl! We were posting at the same time :D I'm hoping that by rereading Catcher I may feel more in touch with TGG. But I'm so with you - I like to see Jake's characters survive the whole length of a movie now and again! For this reason, I love the end of MMile.

sheba said...

That's why I adore Moonlight Mile, new beginnings after tragedy, a very hopeful movie.

I feel deeply in love with Holden and wished he could have been saved but ... that's the movies.

Thanks for the new posts that helps revisit old friends like TGG, MM and Zodiac (have I said 'Tom is my slave name' is my favourite line of the whole movie, next is 'I'm not gonna beg ya')

TDK trailer yes is so poignant which makes it even more of a necessity to watch it on the big screen.

The event went quite well I gather on Monday all around. How exciting for those who took part. I'm sure there'll be more clues from the Joker (Bless you Heath).

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sheba! It is interesting talking about Holden and some of the other characters Jake's played and I've found all this discussion over the last few days really inspiring. For the first time in a long time, I've felt that I need to find time to read a book and so I will. All due to the people here and because of our chat about Jake's motivation.

Monday sounds great for TDK viewers - I suppose July 18 will come pretty quickly with all those mixed feelings.
