Jake Gyllenhaal - one eye on the future and one straight ahead

This week, up and coming young actor Josh Hutcherson was interviewed about his new film Journey to the Centre of the Earth, in which he plays opposite Brendan Fraser. The 15 year old was asked what his dream was - he had two: to play soccer in a movie and to act with Jake Gyllenhaal (not necessarily in that order).

This reminded me of an interview Josh did just over a year ago now, when his movie Zarutha was doing the rounds. Then Josh was asked who he wanted to act with and, demonstrating that Josh knew then what he knows now, he replied 'I want to work with Jake Gyllenhaal because I love his acting and I love the way he’s taken his career path. He’s done movies that aren’t necessarily blockbuster movies. He’s done those too but he’s also done smaller films with more challenging roles and that’s what I want to do so I’d love to work with him.'

Likewise, the extremely talented Daniel Radcliffe was once asked who he wanted to act with and he picked Jake. At the end of 2007, Jake and Heath picked Once as their film of the year on Film 2007 - Daniel picked Zodiac.

So, although Jake is just 27 years old and arguably he is standing at a milestone with one of next year's biggest and potentially most exciting crowdpullers in his grasp, Prince of Persia, one realises that Jake is now influencing another even younger generation of actors that has ambitions to excel. A huge reason for this is the path Jake has taken, with its range and its astonishing maturity, as well as its challenges and glorious surprises.

When Jake appeared in Donnie Darko - a film that took about as long (or as short) to shoot as the time that Donnie himself had to wait for the end - Jake possibly had little idea about what a crucial role Donnie would prove to be. Big choices awaited. Jake went from Donnie to Joe Nast in Moonlight Mile, allowing him to work with giants of the stage and screen Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon. After this, Jake took two decisions which had a big impact on the rest of his career, one with and one against the advice of Dustin Hoffman, who clearly saw himself as some kind of mentor, having a son who was also called Jake.

Dustin told Jake that he was good but that he needed to be better and these skills would be learned in the theatre, so Jake took to the boards of the London West End. As a result of this, Jake was spotted by no fewer than three directors who influenced Jake's subsequent career - Roland Emmerich for The Day After Tomorrow, John Madden for Proof and Sam Mendes for Jarhead.

Although Dustin Hoffman advised Jake against The Day After Tomorrow, telling him to be patient and wait for roles that would follow from Moonlight Mile and This is our Youth, Jake wanted to do it and showed that he could be a young swoonworthy heart throb. So from disparate projects - one on the stage, the other in front of blue screen - Jake helped set the scene for the range of choices from which he can now take his pick.

This is the path Jake chose - but when the publicity was appearing for Donnie Darko, there was an alternative role on the cards and shows how choices apparently seemingly sealed do not always come to pass for whatever reason. While Jake was considering starring in Bernado Bertolucci's Dreamers, which would feature an amount of nudity Jake wasn't comfortable with, at the other end of the spectrum almost, it was widely anticipated that Jake would be appearing in Me and My Monster, as the boy and young adult whose life was changed by his friendship with an extraordinary creature. For some time, Neil Jordan's name was also attached to this 'Jake Gyllenhaal comedy vehicle', but before long so much had changed.

  1. Lovely back view, WDW!

Reminds me that Jake was a leader, apparently, in high school. And that Austin Nichols, in a recent introduction to something or other, I cant recall what, listed Jake as one of three "teachers" in his life. I think this is a role that we haven't fully recognized, yet.

At least me, wanting him mostly to be my sex slave.

    Oh well.

His career choices have been wise, sure enuff, and he's got the background, family and friends to educate him in these.

O how I love the MM walking on water image - Id like to have it as a poster in my room. Since I dont live in a barn, I cant tack posters up all over the walls, unfortunatly.

I know someone who has a club lower east side NYC where she projects Japanese action films on the brick walls, non stop. No sound. Id like to project moving Jake and water images on my bedroom walls. Imagine the MM water walking image with the swimmer swimming endlessly. Any suggestions, TL, you're the resident guru.

Jake's got the touch. And, as Donnie Darko's daddy said about Donnie: "somebody's looking after him."

An effing RABBIT o well why not I give up

  2. Hi Pia - thanks for that great comment :D I was kind of interested in how Jake inspires and is inspired and how wisely Jake has shaped his craeer. Big theme, little post, but I wanted to touch on it tonight.

I love the images of Moonlight Jake water walking - stunning and also all about summer.

  3. This is my first post here, but i've been a fan of Jake fow a few years now. However, I would love to know the name of the play he did in West End.
    Thanks a Lot!

  4. Hi Jazzy! Thanks very much for commenting and welcome :D Jake appeared in the West End in 2002 in the Kenneth Lonergan play This Is Our Youth as the character Warren. There are some posts about it on WDW if you use the search box. Good to see you!

  5. Lovely post, WDW :)

I don't think I've seen Josh Hutcherson act, but I love this kid already :)

Haha... I think Jake's biggest/luckiest film project escape is "Howard the Duck"! Even though I bet he must have pouted for a month when his mother wouldn't let him go do it.

"Once" is lovely film. So easy to fall in love with it.

  6. I've never heard of Josh Hutcherson, but I like him so far;)

Nice post, WDW:) It's reassuring to those of us who still have some lingering concerns about Jake venturing into superhero blockbuster territory with POP, to remember that even after doing TDAT he went back to doing more "credible"(for want of a better word) films.

I love your idea of projecting Jake onto your bedroom walls, Pia:D If I ever figure out how to do that, I'll phone WDW and she can pass it on to you,cos I'll never be able to drag myself out of bed to get to the PC :D

  7. Oh Pia, I think I'd prefer to be his slave! He's looking so hot lately, and I really am looking forward to more info on Prince of Persia - my Master and Commander! I'd like to project Douglas Freeman on my walls. Sorry, couldn't resist! ;)

  8. Hi Winterbird :D I saw Zaburtha (might have spelt that wrong) on a plane not that long ago but this is a boy with definite taste. Howard the Duck - blimey - thank heavens that didn't happen :D

Hey there TL - I think it's good that Jake can do such a mixture of 'big' and 'small' movies, so there's something and all for everyone. Please work on the projections!

Hi there Anon - I have a bit of a thing about having Douglas on my walls too :D Thanks for commenting!

  9. come to think of it a rabbit is fertility symbol and in DD Frank was an artists, so I guess that's a good enuff spirit to look over Jake and his many incarnations, as well as Donnie.

    just thinkin'

  10. Nothing better than hearing young actors look up and respect Jake's work as an actor. Never heard of Josh but I wish him a ton of luck in his career. He certainly has great taste! Same with Mr. Radcliffe. If he thinks Jake and Zodiac are great good on him! He is a talent in the making as well, with HP and his great work in Equus which I hope to catch when it soon comes to Broadway. So wish I could have seen Jake in the West End for TIOY. Hopefully he will return to the boards again soon. :)

Despite some films not working out for Jake I think he has made excellent choices, like DD and MM.

    Never heard of Zaburtha, WDW?

I agree, Winterbird, Once is a lovely film with wonderful songs.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful evening. We are having beautiful weather here.

  11. Hi Get Real! I'd love to have seen Jake on the boards - hopefully at some time we all will. But it's good to know he's inspiring another load of youngsters.

I enjoyed Zaburtha but I thought it was too similar to Jumanji (but set in space), which I really enjoyed.

I'm glad to hear you're having some sun. Today ended here with lots more rain :( But Friday tomorrow :)

  12. Great post WDW. What a great accolade to be inspiring a new generation of actors. I've noticed Josh in Zathura: A Space Adventure and his performance stood out. Imagine Jake's far reaching influence when he undertakes PoP.

I remember Heath saying that there's no competition in Jake when it comes to working alongside his fellow actor and some have called him an actor's actor. Clint Eastwood was called that so this bodes well for his directorial debut if and when it comes.

I thank the many stars in heaven that Jake was not a child star - who knows what he would have been like and how many child stars go on to be just as successful in their adult life - very few. I'm also delighted that he followed his instincts and turned down Dreamers (Bertolucci's film). That would have been a disaster - it was *something that doesn't smell very nice*. Then followed his instincts again against advice and did BBM.

Moonlight Mile is one of my personal favourites and to do that kind of film, with the calibre of actors at 21 was bold and he was so convincing. As for Donnie Darko, I feel a liitle sad that Jake mentions that movie is for his generation as it feels like excluding a whole bunch of us that connected so deeply and understood some of the teenage angst as we have lived through most of it. I think I've said before - I look forward to the day when I can discuss DD with my children and get their views on it.

I read somewhere a comment that said Jake is like a baby that is given attention with people cooing over him and saying how cute and gorgeous he is and that baby gives back the same love with a beautiful smile and coos back at us. I hope to coo at him and show that love of his work for a long time and I hope he continues to enjoy his 'embarrassment of riches'.

  13. Good morning everyone :D

Hi Sheba :D Thanks for that wonderful comment - I know just what you mean about Donnie - I was that age in the 80s and it certainly spoke to me - the film was that good and Jake was that good. But I also think it speaks across the decades, I think we all have Donnie moments.

    I'll coo too :D

Oxford is a sea of Tibetan monks today - the Dalai Lama's in town :) Have a good day everyone :D

  14. Hi everyone, hope you're all having a lovely and sunny friday and not rainy as mine here! Looking forward to the weekend and some sunshine too :-/

Thank you WDW for this post, I've really loved it: I had never thought of Jake as an inspiration for other and younger actors (my big big fault), that's simply wonderful, it shows what a great artist and person he is

I am, with TL, one of those who still can't get used to the idea of Jake in PoP (even though the thought of him half naked, perfect shape and muscles on display I have to say helps a lot to get used to it :P), it's just I can't imagine him playing the role of a superhero (or videogame character in this case), but the more I'm uncertain about a role he's going to play, the more I'm curious to see the movie, beacuse I know the great actor he is, and in the end I'm always curious to see him playing something new and different and challenging :) And for sure he has never disappointed me so far ;)

  15. Wow, that's why I so love coming around your blog: every time I leave with a deep smile both on the face and in the heart ;)

Like the others I loved this post, which shows how Jake's acting and path are influencing other young actors. I didn't know that and I never thought about this possibility neither! It shows how great Jake is... and that he's perceived very well by his fellows!
I'm not a fan of Jake since a very long time, but now I guess I'm deeply infected by this divine desease :)

Thanks a lot for all your posts! You do a great job!

  16. Hi Good Girl :D It's a whole new kettle of fish for us and for Jake - The Prince of Persia. Like you, I'm really excited to see what Jake does with this and I really love that they wanted him for the role :D I hope it brightens up where you are - a lull in the rain here - roll on the weekend!

Hey Irkaiel! welcome :D Thanks so much for commenting and I'm really pleased that the site takes you to a happy place - I'll give Jake the credit for that :) It does interest me that young actors, making their way, think of Jake in such terms.

    Have a good Friday morning/afternoon everyone :D

  17. I don't think Jake was up for "Howard the Duck," which was filmed in 1985, when Jake was just 5 years old. What part would he have played anyway? There don't seem to be any roles for little children in it.

I think the movie in question was "Mighty Ducks," which Jake did want to be in. It was filmed in 1991, when Jake was 11, or almost 11.

  18. Hi Paul! Much as I love Jake and much as I love ducks, I don't care for the two to mix in a cinematic sense :D

  19. WDW, how very lovely that the Dalai Lama is visiting Oxford. Enjoy.

It's great that Jake is such a positive influence on young actors, he himself being young. He has made great film choices and most memorable roles. His role in Brokeback I'll never, ever forget, and you know how I love Moonlight Mile. :)

  20. Hey WDW, it's the week-end!!! :-)
I was too tired to read this post last night(when you're still not fully fit, this working lark is over-rated!)so I'm only just catching up on its joys, which are many.

Young Master Hutcherson obviously has his head screwed on - who better to imitate/admire/hope to work with than J. Gyllenhaal Esquire! Reading this post has also made me feel a little more relaxed about "PoP" because it has reminded me that Jake has made such sound decisions in the past, even when older, more experienced souls were advising him in the opposite direction,so maybe I should trust his judgement on "PoP" too as it's proved to be spot up to now - well,in terms of the roles he's taken at any rate.
    ;-)

I made a mental note to get hold of "Once" when both Heath and Jake chose it as their film of 2007,and further endorsements from WDWers here have spurred me on to order it this weekend along, at last, with "Highway",the only Jake-film I've yet to see, having tracked down a British company who have it on Region 2 DVD.

It's great to see new people de-lurking and introducing themselves. Hi Jazzy, hello Irkaiel, great to have you here :-)

I'm sure that Anouska will be as pleased and intrigued as I am to hear from Pia the snippet about Austin citing Jake as one of the three teachers in his life.I wonder exactly what Mr.N has learned from Mr.G......

As for projecting Jake onto one's bedroom walls...think I'd rather have him on my bedroom floor ;-)
    Hehehehehehe!

Now, now Naughty Nadine, we'll leave it to the imagination ;DDD.

If you've not seen Highway as yet, I have a copy on video (I got it in the sale 25p!) I could pass it on to people who could pass it on to you (got to wait a few weeks though). I wanted it to go to a good home :D

I'm getting petulant and impatient waiting for news of Nailed *stamps foot petulantly and impatiently* We want news, we want news, we want news................... please :D

  22. Oh, oh, WDW. May the peace and tranquility visited upon you by the Dalai Lama descend upon the peaceful and tranquil city of Oxford. You guys will be floating all weekend :DD

  24. Hey Nadine! I remember reading that snippet that Pia mentioned, I'll look up the link and email it to you later:) I also recall reading a quote from Austin where he said that Jake taught him, amongst other things, "all about girls" - I'm saying nothing:D

I know what you mean about Nailed news, Sheba, but the way it's going it keeps changing every five minutes, so I won't believe it's finished until I'm sat in the cinema watching it (hopefully drooling over the sight of Jake in various states of undress).
