[Update]Guest DJ Jake Gyllenhaal's five songs on KCRW. Sam and Tommy and Grace - Brothers videos and stills

[Update] I've immediately had to update this post due to what might well be the Jake interview I will fall back on and listen to in all those moments when I want to hear Jake's voice and listen to that heart. This interview is on KCRW Radio (you can download it) and Jake talks us through the five songs that inspire him, looking back to his childhood. The songs his father and mother would sing to him, to calm him, to educate him, to move him.

It's extremely revealing - nothing undresses like music - but two things caught me in particular - Jake describing how he cried and cried on the Brothers set to Bruce Springsteen's The River and how Danny Kaye was such an influence on his childhood. Jake picks Inchworm. When I heard Jake describe this and then I heard it, I was transported back 30 years. My parents also sang this to me when I was a child and Hans Christian Andersen was for a long time my very favourite film. Listen to this interview and make a connection. Thank you Stephanie for sending me this.

On with the post... Well, almost - another Update! Jake here talks about how Peter Sarsgaard, who knows how to be 'still', is an inspiration to him.

Post 2 of the evening is brought about because of the opening of a veritable treasure chest of Brothers stills (over 200 of them) and videos. Here are the videos which feature Jake Gyllenhaal - how it's all about family, how he loved his tattoos and the differences between making a Prince of Persia and a movie like Brothers. Many, many thanks to Eagle-eyed BBMISwear! Please also take a look at the earlier post this evening if you can.

Here are just some of the many photos of Jake from among the 200 plus stills. There are some stunners here and there are others that make your heart miss a beat. How about this one? It does it for me.

And there are many more delights here.

Oh my. I'm not really sure where to begin. Thank you so much to WDW and Stephanie for bringing this wonderful Guest DJ broadcast to us! It blew me away and I only listened to it once (so far). So many heartwarming family stories. I'll never listen to The River the same way again. I have to smile when I think about how Jake's first concert was the Born in the USA Tour (which means he was either almost 4 years old if he saw them in LA in October 1984 or almost 5 if he saw them when the tour went back to LA in Sept/October 1985). My first Springsteen concert of the 36 I've seen so far was in September 1984 (but not in LA)! Yeah, this sure is making me smile a lot!

You're welcome re: finding the gazillion pictures from Brothers...I'm still amazed at all those pictures and how this site has them when no other has! There are some beautiful ones of Jake as Tommy and I am really counting the minutes now between now and 11:50AM EST Friday.

I need to go digest some more of all these gifts we have received during Brothers Week. It's been a wild rid, huh?!

Wow, I enjoyed this guest DJ broadcast too - it's a privilege to listen to Jake's personal thoughts.

The River is such a powerful song, and the Loudon Wainwright song is so true, for those who may have ups and downs in families, but lots of love too. Inchworm transported me back in time too; I have always found that song magical, or haunting, or melancholy, maybe because of the key its in. Wonderful.

These pics of Tommy are great - he looks so handsome in the wool cap, sweatshirt and jacket. Looks like Tommy is going to be a bit introspective now that he's gotten a fresh start at life. All of the posts and information leading up to the film's opening has been great. Thanks!

Ufortunately for me, I can't listen to Jake's voice right now becaue I am having trouble with my computer. I love that he is a Springsteen fan. I was in LA in 1985 for the Born In The USA tour. Little Jake could have been there with me. Thirty-six times, BBMISwear! And I thought my 7 times was a lot.

Since I can't hear Jake right now, I will just have to be content with all of these absolutely stunning pictures. Thanks BBMISwear and WDW.

what a amazing and special interview! you are so right that nothing undresses someone more than his/her music choices.

and how much Jake was/is adored by his dad? Singing to his son before he went to bed... wow. just wow.

Am I getting it correct that Alice Wainwright was Maggie's nanny?? Seems like they all know each other and they are all connected.

"The Boss" is quite an influence to me too when I was a teenager. That makes me want to watch Brothers even more - I want to know if it's really like David Letterman claimed that this is the best movie he's seen in 20 years? *g*

Thanks for all the great Jake stuff you found!!! It's been just amazing.

Good morning! OMG what a night - what amazing goodies. I slept a very happy sleep last night after listening to that interview and then looking at these pictures.

Hi Gretchen! It was very intimate and beautiful to listen to. Natalie says that Jake has alopecia in his pubic region! Gotta be good friends to make that kind of joke!

Morning BBMISwear :-) So glad you found that site! Sigh...

I completely thought of you when Jake spoke about Bruce! I know how you love him. I'm a Bruce novice - although his Streets of Philadelphia is among my top 5 songs ever. I will find The River and it'll make me think of you and Jake!

Morning Bertie! I'm glad it's not just me feeling like that after hearing Jake describe a favourite childhood song. Memories came flooding back! And how desperate am I to see Brothers? Wonderful pictures and Tommy sounds intriguing (and hot).

Hi Dani - hope you get your computer fixed so you can hear it. And another Bruce fan!

welcome back Winterbird! Lots of Jake goodies waiting :) It was good to hear Jake talking about his relationship with his dad - a close one. And his mum singing to him too. No wonder Jake likes to sing. I was amazed when Jake said that about Alice - these familes are tied!

Have a great day everyone!

I went to bed looking and listening to this stuff and woke up doing the same. There are other things that need to be done this week but so far I can't say it's been my most productive week (it's Brothers Week after all)!! LOL!!

Now I'm laughing again at alopecia in his pubic region - thanks for the reminder people! That whole segment was hysterical - I must find time to watch that again today. A good pick me up!

How cool that Dani may have been at the same Springsteen concert as little Jake?!

*interlude*

I come from down in the valley where mister when you're young
They bring you up to do like your daddy done
Me and Mary we met in high school when she was just seventeen
We'd ride out of that valley down to where the fields were green
We'd go down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh down to the river we'd ride

*end of interlude*

Lots to do today...I wonder if I can squeeze in some time to look at those (many) GORGEOUS pictures of Tommy Cahill again? *THUD*

29 hours and 20 minutes to go...

Have a good day all!

:-)

It's really funny, Gretchen!

Morning BBMISwear :-) Yeay for Brothers Week! And thnks for a lovely interlude. I need to listen and watch all this again. And now I have more songs for my Jake playlist. It's a long flight on Saturday - this will help :) Actually that reminds me of a flight I had once to the US when Brokeback was playing - the woman next to me asked why I kept watching the same film. I said because I loved one of the actors in it. She took me literally and asked if he was my boyfriend! That was a good flight :D

Is it home time yet? I want to watch and listen to all this again. And take a proper look at these gorgeous pictures.

Wet Dark and Wild, is there a way you can turn off the autostart for Unscripted interview? Everyone just heard Tobey talk about Kate Winslet at my office, lol.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Anon! Oops! I suppose it's a good think it wasn't the merkin bit... :D I'm afraid I can't. It must be streaming non-stop. I think it's case of pressing the mute button (or entertaining your colleagues!) It'll have moved off the front page in a couple of of days.

BBMISwear said...

LOL at the auto start - that happened to me at 6:00AM this morning in an otherwise very quiet house!!

I love that story about your flight and loving the actor WDW! One time a fellow Brokie friend and I sat together on a flight to the west coast and the woman next to us asked us about the book we were reading, Beyond Brokeback. We then explained A LOT to her about the movie, the forums, the wonderful people we've met because of it, etc. She was so intrigued - asked a ton of questions - it was great!

These Tommy pictures are killing me (in a good way) - I seriously can't concentrate on a thing with them right in front of my eyes on my computers screen.

27 hours to go...

P.S. Where's Olympia??

Hello, love those stills from Brothers.
What holds me back is knowing they were filming Brothers when Heath died. Wonder what part it was and how it affected jake while filming till the end.
We know how hard it was for Jake to carry on(it's been said).
Hope you get my meaning as I'm french and my english is so-so.
Love WDW

I'm here, I'm here! Did you miss me? :DDD

Thanks for this great post, WDW, there has been so much to enjoy in the last few days. I love that we get to see two very different sides of Jake in the Unscripted and the Epix promo clips and the Guest DJ thing. I don't know how many times I've watched the merkin bit, I can't stop myself from laughing with Jake when he realises that he and Nathalie aren't talking about the same kind of merkin, I thought he was gonna fall off his chair. He's so goofy and adorable. :) And then we get this quiet, introspective Jake in that radio show. God I love his voice! That was a very interesting choice of music.

Those are some great pics from Brothers, the ones with the kids are killing me...He looks like a big kid playing in the snow. Don't you just want to give him a big hug and a mug of hot coco? And then kiss him silly? :)

It's official, I'll be seing Brothers tomorrow night at 7:05.

Thanks so much to WDW and Stephanie for the Guest DJ interview. It was so lovely to listen to this intimate interview with Jake. I really liked the Loudon Wainwright song. Both my parents are huge fans of the McGarrigles/ Wainwright family so I've been listening to and loving that music since the cradle.

I have spent the whole of my lunch going through the beautiful Brothers pics. Can't believe the time has almost arrived. I would love to head straight to the cinema once I get off the plane on Sunday but my friend doesn't share
my love for Jake so I may have to suffer for another day or so:(

Hi there everyone! Been quite a day!

Hi BBMISwear :-) Nothing makes a flight pass like a Jake movie! This time it looks like I'll get District 9!

Thanks 13:51! I'm so glad you're enjoying it all :D

Ma! Welcome :D It definitely colours it all, makes it even more intense. Thank you so much for commenting and for your very kind words.

Hey Olympia :D Oh yes, I want to have a snowball fight with Jake and then warm up by a cosy fire with a glass of wine and a big feast and watch the snow fall outside - sigh... I did notice that - well done for not noticing it! I think however that this is from a while ago, so I think we're still safe!

Hi Carol :D we'll both be travelling this weekend - exciting! I hope you can get your friend into the theatre or give them the slip! I'll be going straight there but I could be sleepy - I'll fight it! The radio interview was simply wonderful. I can't express how much I loved it.

New post :D Phew!
