Behind the scenes at the Edible Schoolyard & the beginnings of Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway's 'long history together'

Jake Gyllenhaal's last day in New York City was spent productively. He added his name to the support of Edible Schoolyard and then he shaved most of the beard off. A casual look at the photographs and at a news video from the event (which makes no mention of Jake at all), demonstrates that Jake did not push himself forward. In fact, with many thanks to Ned, the editor of Sheepshead Bites, we have an account of what happened. And it's also thanks to Ned that we have many of these great pictures from the day at all! Appropriately enough, the photos below are Ned's as are the words:

'The event was actually kind of funny. Jake was not supposed to be there, and word is that he dropped by because he was in town and had already done fundraising for the project. No one really acknowledged him, and when I first saw him sitting up front with the Councilman, I said, "Oh, look, a guy that looks like Jake Gyllenhaal." Then I didn't pay him any additional attention.'

'Later, while photographing the kids in the garden, the NY Post photographer said to me, "So did you get a photo of the actor?" I asked what actor, and he said "The guy with the sunglasses over there." Standing in front of Jake was a huge fat guy with sunglasses, who I happen to know is a city worker. So I said, "You have no idea what you're talking about. That guy's just some bureaucrat." Then the fat guy moved, and the Post guy says, "No, it's Jake something-or-other."'

'Then it all clicked, and I got a bunch of photos.'

'He's very approachable. He hung around even after most of the media was gone, and people were just chatting with him. Seems like a good guy.'

This is just the account that I love to hear and, although it puts a big smile on my face, it doesn't surprise me in the least because we know all too well that Jake is indeed a good guy. Thanks, Ned!

The Big Apple

The business of opening edible schoolyards and shaving meant that this was one of the very few days from Jake's visit to the Big Apple when he wasn't spotted at a restaurant, cafe, foodshop or milkbar - or even Sun in Bloom. Fortunately, there's one thing about the Edible Schoolyard that is bound to appeal to Jake: it's edible.

Intimacies and complexities

Vogue's feature on Anne Hathaway is now available to read online and it includes a marvellous interview, which demonstrates that the filming of Love and Other Drugs proved to be a cathartic experience for Anne and, no doubt, Jake had his part to play in helping her through a rough time. As can be seen in this excerpt:

'“I tried not to like the script as much as I did, because it scared me,” Hathaway says. “What if it becomes a melodrama? What if the audience doesn’t find these challenging characters charming? There were so many things that could possibly go wrong with it.”'

'If it’s a mismash of genres, the film is held together by the old-fashioned movie-star glamour—and chemistry—of its leads. Reuniting five years after Brokeback Mountain, they further develop what Gyllenhaal calls “the intimacies and complexities between Annie and me, because we have what’s starting to be a long history together, professionally and as friends.”'

'Hathaway says that she “fell in love” with her character, a free spirit who, faced with a life-changing illness, shuts down emotionally. “I heard her voice so strongly in my head, and when that happens I just can’t tune it out,” she says. “She feels like a girl you might actually know.” One of Hathaway’s most salient qualities, of course, is that she herself feels like a girl you might actually know. With her thick mane of hair, Bambi eyes, and huge smile, Hathaway is capable of generating serious allure, but she has always been more of a friend’s kid sister all grown up than an unapproachable screen siren. As Lone Scherfig, her One Day director, says, “She has some of the quality of Elizabeth Taylor or Judy Garland or someone who is not iconic because of her beauty or her goddess status but because of her warmth and depth and humanity. She’s not a Hitchcock blonde—she’s a real person.”'

Fingers crossed that this is indeed just the beginning of a silverscreen partnership between Jake and Anne.

Hello everyone!

I have a question for you. There is a great atmosphere here with lots of conversations going on and friendships being formed. And I know that many of us have interests outside the scope of WDW (after all we're busy people with a lot going on in our lives - I know I need 28 hours in a day at least). I know that conversations get cut off abruptly each evening.

There have been some great ideas for book shelves and recipes, armpits, music etc. These things aren't easily supported by the Blogger format. So would any of you be interested in a forum linked on WDW and, if so, would you use it and would any of you want to moderate it?

That's the question and now I want to hear what you think about our wonderful good guy Jake *sighs* - I'm so grateful to Ned for sharing what it was like from behind the camera :D

Did I say good evening?

A big thank you to Ned for his report on the events of the Edible Schoolyard gathering. It was nice that Jake stopped by. He wanted to be understated and hang back. Didn't want it to be about him being there.

And I loved the Vogue article. I think both actors like taking risks and LAOD sure is risky.

I can't wait to see it. in about a month.

Thanks Sweetpea! And thanks for thanking Ned :D I love what this says about Jake, love it.

How I wish I could see LAOD next month too but 31 December is a lot better than 14 February...

good afternoon, WDW. I think having a separate forum to hang out in and share our other interests is a great idea.

at least you get to ring in the new year with Jake, is there any better way?

Thanks Sweetpea!

And absolutely - I can't think of a better way to spend New Year (usually a day I'm not fond of) and my birthday :D What a present!

"Jake something-or-other". See, I would have loved to be the Event Fairy that day: I would have dragged those two guys to a quiet corner, slap them good and then tell them "It's Jake Gyllenhaal, you dummies -and today is your first day as Gyllenhaalics. You'll thank me later". After illuminating them, I would have walked by Jake himself to say "If you don't watch out, you'll win the Nobel Prize". He already has my vote.

Btw, the pics where he's eating the apple? POETIC! ;-)

Love Anne and wish her and Jake and LAOD all the best. Can't wait. That's my current mantra.

A separate forum for WDWers would be cool. I'll help if necessary. Let's say I'm experienced. :-)

Anne looks beautiful and Jake is adorable. Crossing my fingers for LAOD. :)

Thanks WDW. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Alejandra! That's good to know :D

I love how Jake leaves an impression on those who meet/encounter him. Definitely a worthy Nobel Prize Winner - where do I vote?

I am 100% positive that Jake and Anne will be remembered as one of the great movie partnerships of the 21st century. I have no doubt at all.

Thanks JF!

QUOTE WDW *How I wish I could see LAOD next month too but 31 December is a lot better than 14 February...*

We will never agree on that ... Febr would have been so nice *sigh* ;) lol

Yep it is a pity when conversations get cut off ... :( tho I'm not about my bad starting the armpits thingy :/
I'm not used to forums, having problems to find my way in it *blondike* but coz of you WDW and all the ladies here I'd join anyway

Sasha said...

oh and THX to Ned for the account from behind the cam ...

and I read the whole Vogue-thingy ... and I fell in love with Anne ... she is just amazing and has a great personality (seemingly)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sasha! When I wrote that I thought 'ooh that's not what Sasha would think!' :D Well maybe you'll get Source Code at a better time of year.

It would have to be very simple and straightforward forum, nothing fussy, just a place to chat. Ideally what I would like is to chat here as ever and then when new posts go up, a conversation can be moved over there. I just don't want anyone to stop posting on WDW as that's obviously what keeps the posts coming and keeps me going :)

I'd like, for instance, when we're talking about Gyllenhaalisgr8's new creation that we could see it and chat about it properly, rather than it get left behind. Same with my MB posts. And same with some of the great ideas here. Not the armpits though... :D So you brought that up, eh?!

I'd love to hear what lemniscate would think. I can see a Lemniscate bookshelf :)

The Vogue-thingy is FAB! Anne is wonderful.

Hello!
WDW - for me forum is good idea but with your wonderful blog in the same shape like we have now :)
Last post - thank you for that. Great article about Anne. Ha , so it was not easy for her to play in LAOD. Tears everyday! I wonder how it was for Jake. He seemed to really enjoy acting in this film.
It was so nice of him to drop by to Edible Schoolyard event. It's incredible for me that no one knew he would come! Thank you Ned for sharing.

I like those apple pictures. Who knows, maybe he dropped the rest of the apple to the hole he dug out with the shovel, to show kids how to make a compost.
Yes, he seems like a very good guy and I would like to chat with him too.
In Poland - LAOD - in February :(

mermon said...

About the armpits - last words. I just hope you understood me well (my English) and you don't imagine me with hair everywhere :) :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Mermon :) Love those apple pictures! But sorry to hear about the wait for LAOD :( Not so good.

I was starting to think you were the new Sasquatch!

Sasha said...

@WDW lol - yep I didn't thought that ...

oh pls not fussy :p that sounds like a good idea ... we (you) could put a link into the last comment to the forum-thread before you write your new post and we can go on over there ...

It sure does, it is an acknowledgement of your work :D (our comments and honoring)

@mermon toooooo late - I already pictured you as sasquatch (to go with WDWs descriptive word) ROFL (just kidding)

mermon said...

Hahahaha!
Ok, I can replace Jake. I will be honoured! :)

Here is a link to sneak peek from free LAOD screening circuit in Chicago. Nice words about movie.

I run a forum on a free server and I have no complains. A forum isn't fussy. You need to register to be able to post and after that, fun begins. :-)

Depending on activity, a forum needs administrators and moderators. The first own all the permissions and distribute them among the rest of the members. Mods keep things tidy. You can have as many mods as you like. Like, Lemniscate could be the mod for the Green Library subforum in the WDW forum. And Lemniscate and Kate could both moderate the Recipes subforum. See? lots of fun! :-D

It's cool because there's room for proper introductions, pics posting (of both Jake or your pets or the part of the world where you live), general interests, etc.

If you want to have a look, here's the url for the server that hosts the forum I run. http://www.freeforums.org

If you have any other questions, just ask. I believe I can help with the tweaking. ;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks so much Sasha!

Thanks for the link, oh hairy Mermon :D

That's really useful, Alejandra! I will need your help. I've been playing around with proboards and Freeforums. It's not too easy. I'm getting there! Something basic will go up and then I can get some help!

Alejandra said...

Sure! A forum doesn't have to mean more hard work for you. Anything you need, just let me know. ;-)

Cazajuguetes said...

Hi WDW and everyone!

I'm not used to forums. In fact as I explained to WDW my big baptism at writing any comment in the internet was here. I felt really welcome like when you join some friends for coffee.
If you feel a forum is more suitable for the nice chats we have you have my vote. Are they easy to follow? I feel really comfy here, learning many things from all of you.

I do not have much extra time, what are the usual tasks for a moderator?

Oh, how nice of Ned to tell you about the event. Today's hero: Ned!

@Alejandra: ha,ha, big, big slap. Better safe than sorry, right?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Alejandra! I'll have a ponder for a while and then see how I get on!

As you say, Eureka, it's such a lovely atmosphere here and I don't want to do anything to spoil it. I was thinking about somewhere for all the extra stuff that goes on after I post a new post :)

And yeay for Ned! Love that :)

Alejandra said...

@Eureka I'll put it this way: I'm the Supreme Ruler of a forum with 36 members and yet I'm here, encouraging the creation of more forums. Not a lot of work. When a community is naturally formed and friendly (like this one) there isn't much to moderate. I'm guessing we are not going to start throwing furniture at each other once the forum is up. And if anybody posts a pic of Jake in the Recipes subforum with the caption: "Dessert is served and yummy!", a good WDW mod will allow it to stay there, instead of relocating it in the Jake Appreciation subforum. :-D

Claire said...

Thank you Ned (and WDW)- Jake always seems so down to earth and lovely - thats why he's so great! I've always liked Anne and she just gets better.

I don't have much time but think a forum would be a good idea, to be able to dip in and out of - I think everyone here is so welcoming and nice no matter where in the world we are. *big grin*

@Alejandra:
Thanks for explaining as I'm new to this type online communities.
As I said I'm learning may things from you all...with Jake as a WONDERFUL excuse.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

okey dokey cokey.... what a pilaver....

I've set up something rubbish and I need anyone who wants to to step in and out as they wish.

The WDW GyllenForum Pub

This is totally relaxed, small etc and just for us. You can completely ignore it. The main thing, WDW is paramount and this is only to supplement it and it's WDW that matters. This is to share recipes, books and post vids etc :)

I'd love it if people could take over areas they like and let me be a guest and put my feet up :)

If doesn't take off, it doesn't matter a bit :)

Hello Claire, Sasha, Eureka and Alejandra! Is furniture being thrown?

Sasha said...

Yep - but no one got hurt WDW ...lol

FIRST in the WDW pub *yay* (after you WDW that is)

Sasha said...

awww >>> "If doesn't take off, it doesn't matter a bit :)"

Alejandra said...

Superb!! You were pretending not to know how to set it up! Absolutely love it!

brb I'm going to register :-D

Cazajuguetes said...

Tested! not sure if I did it right though. I opened a new topic in Welcome instead of replying.... :o|

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Blimey, you're too kind Sasha and Alejandra! I had to start all over again and it's taken me the entire evening. At least I may have lost a couple of pounds :D

But I have to stress over and over again, WDW is for the comments and Jaking - the Pub is for the extra :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

You did good Eureka! It isn't easy. I've been pulling my hair out... I loved that you started a new topic, it shows it can be done.

I have to stress - please use the Pub as your place and just play with it - new topics as you please and I'll make you moderators of them. It's not a WDW thing as much as something for everyone to get to know everyone a little better with. No rules except politeness :)

lemniscate said...

G'day Folks,

OMG! It's been less than 24 hours since I've last set eyes on this place... and, and... by golly, what have y'all been up to? ;-)

@Ned - Thank you so much for sharing your Jake Gyllenhaal experience with us and taking my absolute, most favourite picture of him ever! You captured a part of his soul...

@WDW and y'all
The forum is a great idea! No fuss, just us. Totally!
Uh, what? You've put one up already? Huh? Wow lady, you sure strike it when it's hot! Legend! ;-)
Aarch... Well,... that said, I'd love to help out, but I'm too busy at work at the moment to make that kind of commitment. Also, I usually don't spend much time online outside working hours... Hey, I'm not a slacker. I'm doing research. ;-) More importantly, I need to be out and about a lot to find my JG doppelgänger... or my soulmate... preferably 2-in-1!
But, I know it would be such a great place for us and so much fun, so let me know what you need, and I'll see what I can do. Can't make any promises though babe.

@Alejandra - "Event Fairy"? "Nobel Prize"? Hilarious! ROTFLMAO ;-)
Agreed, he is so on his way to a Nobel Prize...

@mermon - *BIG HUG* ;-)

Oh dear,... I think I'm starting to have a girlie-crush on Annie, though she would seem a bit too "posh" for my taste.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Lemniscate! I do indeed strike while the iron is hot - it's my impetuous but resolutely committed nature :D No worries - I know we're all busy. I've scheduled in a meal next Saturday.

Annie is gorgeous! After British posh I don't recognise other posh :D

Darling Bluebell said...

So much goodies tonight! Thank you! :) Such a wonderful account from Ned. It warms me from head to toe, which is very welcome on cold autumn nights like these. ;-)

Whaaah a forum!! You just made me a very happy gal. It totally sucks that it's 1:15AM here and my alarm clock goes off in 5 hours, so I'll just leave this comment here and visit the forum tomorrow as soon as I can.

Forums can become such a wonderful virtual place to be. I've been admin and moderator for a few in the past and if you have the right atmosphere they can be so much fun. :)
It would be wonderful to create such a place to get to know each other better and talk about Jake and movies even more than we do now. Looking forward to posting tomorrow. Sweet dreams for now!

Alejandra said...

@Lemniscate Now I wish I was the Event Fairy. Although I know I would mostly attend the events Jake attends. I'd get fired soon for neglecting all the other events in this world. Bye bye fantasy. ;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Lady Ekster! Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. I can't believe where this evening has gone. Hopeless... I'm not a huge forum fan, mainly due to administration, but this one is free'n'easy. And it's not there for me but because I feel like everyone wants to know everyone a bit better. And I like that. I'd love people to take on bits they're interested in. See you tomorrow!

Me too, Alejandra :)

Alejandra said...

Goodnight, ladies. Have sweet dreams. xo

lemniscate said...

WDW, your wish is my command. ;-)
Jakey-fied my avatar.
Still delirious from the experience. It was my first time...

It's almost 1:30pm here now and I've have slacking all morning. Fudge!
So distracted by the latest post and this cool new WDW forum...
Must discipline myself now.
No more JG today. Zap!!! There!

Uli said...

Good morning!! Hehe, just registered!! I think a forum is a lovely idea (thinking of good ol' times here...). Since I can't be as active as I would like to be here, it feels like I might be better able to catch up with the fun that is happening in the comments here, when part of that will be happening at the forum.
Unfortunately I won't be able to poke around there much now... Have to hurry to visit family for my mum's birthday and when I return tonight there will be packing to do for another trip to Portugal (where the weather is NOT as nice as I was hoping it would be....! :D :D) for work tomorrow! Err, are there any Gyllenhaalics in Lisbon???

Thanks to Ned and you for sharing the lovely Gyllenexperience with us! The reason why I can't let go of Jake is that he is not only the best actor I could think of and insanely good looking, but also because he seems to be such a sweet, lovely, humble person! And it's just wonderful to get confirmation of that once in a while...
Although I think it might be possible that he was mainly there for the free apples... :D :D :D

I hope everybody is going to have a great day!

Hello WDW and everyone

Somehow nice to think of Jake slipping under the radar when he was at the Edible Schoolyards opening. Just like one of the populace, one of us.:)

That interview with Anne Hathaway is so interesting - she is so open. Makes me even more intrigued about LAOD.

Yay - a new forum! I'll go there now.

Cheers

Tui

Morning everyone! New post :)

Ooh, Lemniscate - looking great! Love that picture! Blimey what an evening - a lot of fun :D

Hi Alejandra! can you let me know how to make moderators as I want to set you up.

Morning Uli! Glad to see you and I'm really happy you think it's a good idea. Have a good time in Lisbon. I've never been.

Thanks Tui! It is such a lovely thought :)

New pics means new post!
