Lest we forget that Love and Other Drugs is not your usual run of the mill RomCom, Fox is reminding us of its adult theme by extracting some of the saucier moments and assembling them into what is being called a 'Red band' trailer. The trailer does its job of serving up, appropriately, a teaser to one aspect of the film, but personally I'm not so sure of the merit of pulling such scenes out of context when, in their place in the film, they contribute so much to the storyline, to the humour and to the rich characterisation. I think this trailer does nothing for Love and Other Drugs accept to distract us from its emotional impact and warmth. You can watch the trailer here.
I'm glad to say that to counteract this trailer we have another interview with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway and this one has a much more pertinent message for those considering seeing Love and Other Drugs: 'You come for the tushies and you leave with your heart'.
The chemistry between Jake and Anne has become increasingly obvious as the publicity train continues and, in this interview, Ed Zwick talks about how he encouraged this comfortable intimacy: 'Of course, Anne and Jake worked for a few days together on "Brokeback Mountain," but Ed sent them to dinners and movies to get to know each other even better. "They're both very serious about their craft, and it's funny when someone is very serious about their craft and what you're talking about is comedy, so you have to temper the deeper colors with lightness," Ed explained. "But they're also both very funny people and lovely, joyful people, and I think that was part of it for all of us. We had to get to know each other very well, we had to trust each other a great deal."'
And finally...
Despite all the Love and Other Drugs talk, this weekend is all about Prince of Persia for me as I head off to a PoP Party with Ruby, Mr Ruby and Anouska! I am working on a spectacular table display for the Persian feast - expect pictures.
Pictures from Fox and Disney.
Hello everyone! I hope you all have a good Saturday. I've got to polish my Dagger of Time and get the ostrich out...
ReplyDeleteostrich?!! I hope you are going to clean up after it.
ReplyDeleteA 'red band' trailer is simply a trailer that's "R" rated, and not for general release on TV, etc.
ReplyDeleteAll trailers emphasize what the marketing people think will get people interested in seeing the movie.
The "G" rated trailers we are seeing on TV, are giving us a 'context' that's not really what this movie is about, as well. IMO, the "G" rate trailers are misleading.
The red band trailer gives context closer to the aspects of Jamie's sleazy character and his world. All the trailers show off Anne and Jake's beauty.
It looks like Jake was packing a little erector set in his boxers for that scene; oh, the future tales of the controller at the switch! I am so jealous!
ReplyDeleteYou all aren't cooking the ostrich, I hope?
ReplyDeleteHave fun at the PoP party, wish I was there!
*off to see R-rated trailer * :)
wow a Pop party huh? sounds like fun. Just don't take your eyes off that ostrich (:D)
ReplyDeleteHere is a LAOD clip I found

okay I see you've already found this rather sexual innuendo trailer. Well blame the crazy crap going on around me ATM for posting the link again.
ReplyDeletecan't have it too many times can you. I loved mention of a certain person's stick shift :D

Greetings from the deserts of Persia :)
ReplyDeleteHey Rubes - the ostrich opted out - I think it feared it was the second course :D
Hi Anon:) I know what you're saying but I still don't find this necessary. Jake's character isn't sleazy but clearly this trailer makes people think he is.
Hi Gyllenhaalisgr8! You are gonna love the film!
Hey Winterbird! Wish you were here - plenty of Ostrich to go around!
Hey Sweetpea! Yes, it's the subject of the post;)
Have a great evening everyone and I am sorry to say one of my Dastans is now a leg short and being superglued together.
OMG how is Dastan doing? poor thing!
ReplyDeletehave fun WDW

Hope your party is still rocking. What does Ostridge taste like. Please ensure you use the Dagger of time responsibly and rewind the best bits :D
ReplyDeleteHey Sheba! Our Persian feast was wonderful! Now watching the film. Lovely way to spend the evening :)
ReplyDeleteOMG, poor Dastan and WDW! (although I have to admit it made me laugh... Bad me...).
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I really enjoyed the Red band trailer!! But - without knowing the whole movie - I think of course the Red band trailer doesn't give an accurate picture of the movie - just as the "regular" trailer is not able to really give a complete picture of the movie - with leaving all the raunchy/ sexy stuff out... So I'd definitely wish it was possible to have a trailer that would combine all sides of the movie and give a true impression of it, but that unfortunately seems to be impossible. Actually I think it would be much better to give people an idea what they are really in for with a movie. For instance even though I knew from the talk about the movie that there will be a lot of nudity, I was not expecting the raunchiness (sucking of dicks, drug reactions, Jamiecurious Thais etc.) shown in the new trailer. Absolutely no problem for me, I found it funny (thanks to Jake, though... If it had been Will Ferrell for instance I would have hated it, LOL). But I was planning on taking a friend of mine to see LAOD... I was already a bit hesitant because of the expected sex and nudity, but thought she would have to live with it... I don't want to call her prudish - although, maybe I should, LOL - but I am very sure she will not appreciate the stuff shown in the Red band trailer... I mean, that kind of stuff is just not to everybody's taste... So now I am not so sure if I really should take her with me...
So, in short: Yes, I think there is a point to a Red band trailer... As long as everybody who sees that trailer also watches the one for everybody :D But there was even more point to a trailer that gives an impression of the whole movie...
Can I say, that I think it's a real shame that Jake has to go to Letterman again? I wish he could do Ellen or Jimmy Kimmel instead... Letterman was so incredibly uninspired the last time. :-/ Poor Jake... I hope he will be able to make the best of it...
I hope you guys are having lots of fun with Dastan! Looking forward to pictures of Persian displays with handicapped Dastans...
PS, Sheba: Ostrich tastes delicious... :D :D
Hello WDW and everybody
ReplyDeleteYes I had to take a look at the red band trailer. What struck me is I think it is spoiler-ish, giving away too much of the plot.
What an interesting movie though - I look forward to having it come out here.
Cheers
Tui
Persian feast pics? Oh yeah! enjoy!
ReplyDeleteTD
I'd think at the same time if Letterman didn't care for Jake he would of made one appearance and that would of been it.
ReplyDeleteWish he would do the Ellen show because she likes him so much. Maybe with "Source Code".
Like him with Jimmy F. They seemed to have a good time during their "song & dance" and interview.
Oh, and Conan has a new show now and they also had a good rapport.
KC
Good Evening!
ReplyDeleteWDW - I think POP is a perfrct Jake's movie to have fun with your friends. I wonder if you sit watching in silence, or you comment through the film, as you know POP already.
About 'red band' trailer - I didn't mind watching it. Maybe I didn't catch all the dirty things they said. Certainly it was more sexy. Because I knew two previous very good trailers in that one I was searching for some new scenes, just to know more about the movie and I found them. I can't resist anything coming from the movie, because I will have to wait so long, till February.
But I know from my experience from Twilight series, that sometimes when they show to many clips, that watching movie is like moving from clip to clip. Better less than too much.
I have a question - I don't understand precisely this line 'You come for the tushies and you leave with your heart'.
ReplyDeleteTushies are the diapers, right? What do they have in common with whole story? Maybe it's dumb question, but I didn't get it. I would like to understand. Please help :)
Does that mean, that you expect to have wet panties from laughing, that's why you need tushies?
I hope you're all having a lot of PoP fun this weekend! :-D And please leave the party without your eyes poked out by the ostrich. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhoa WDW, that was a pretty strong intro to that R-trailer. Me likes! It sure shows how much you have "left the cinema with your heart". ;-)
@mermon: 'tushies' is a slang term for 'buttocks'.
@Lady Ekster - thank you for explanation about tushies. Now it makes sense :)
ReplyDeleteDo not fear becoming an "older woman" someday -- we aren't dead yet! Florence is 72 goind on 50, Gail is in her 60s I think, Karen is 59 and I'm...well...older than Stephen but younger than Naomi, LOL, and everytime I give another hint of more sex in L&OD they get even more impatient to see it! Jake fans have no age limit! He brings out the "girl" in all of us!
ReplyDeleteSo true gyllenhaalisgr8 so true. I've learned to embrace this and it's so freeing. He does bring out the girly side of me quite often too :DD
ReplyDeleteUh..Oh, I see the PoP party may have some real hung over people. Wish we were there. Could you have imagined WDW, that 5 years ago, you would have been doing anything like all this. It's magical and truly wonderous. Thanks for sharing the fun with us.
LOL Uli, I won't be trying it. All I can think of is (what was the name of the sole surviving ostridge's name) big brown eyes :D
As for the trailer, I'll wait for the movie. I know Jake is fearless when it comes to raunchy and emotion so bring it on.
Awwww... the sun's gone. Does that mean Jake's left the UK?
Hello! Many thanks to Ruby, Mr Ruby and Anouska for a fantastic PoP party and extra big thanks to Mr Ruby for a veritable Persian feast - delicious :D
ReplyDeleteGood to see you all and catch up :D It's interesting to see all the different reactions to the trailer. We did watch it last night and I must say that I preferred it after a couple of bottles of champagne but still not something I thought useful. But then that's just my opinion and I do like reading everyone else's!
And yep I agree it's spoilerish.
And I do agree Gyllenhaalisgr8 that being a Gyllenhaalic has very little to do with age :)
I also agree with Uli about Letterman - I'm not a fan of that show - I would much much prefer an Ellen show.
I must report that Dastan's not doing too badly, he's superglued and his leg is taped up - I'm hopeful he'll make a full recovery :D
Hope everyone's having a good Sunday!
hi WDW...
ReplyDeleteJake is really gorgeous in the new trailer, the car scene's really funny and the last scene with Anne too, but no, I don't think there's any point to the new trailer,I think it is so badly cut, the clips is so random, makes it a little bit confusing, not nearly as good as the previous trailers, I really don't understand why fox released this new one, it doesn't show anything bout the story unlike the first an second trailer. the good thing is that I got to see more Jake, and I really can,t stop squealing at his charm...
I haven't seen the tushies vid, don't have enough time..:'(
And since you've already seen the movie, I want to ask, if you don't mind answering it, you remember the running pic on LAOD set?is it there in the movie? haha, I know this is kinda weird, but I really like that pic...
well, thanks for the post WDW!!!
And a PoP party ?? must be alot of fun.. and Persian feast, what menu do you have there WDW?
ReplyDeletehope we all could be there too.
Hi Serene Hill! I'm sorry to say that I can't remember the running scene being in it - hopefully it'll make it to one of the many extras.
ReplyDeleteWe had Persian rice, lentil (and lamb for the meaties) stew, flat breads, fish kebabs - absolutely gorgeous!
Hi, WDW. The Persian feast sounds like a good thing. I may want to create one of my own at some point. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhatever actorly qualities Jake and Anne might have that make them a good team, I think that sheer physical presence is very important. Jake is just the right height to be a perfect partner for Anne. Jake is the laid back one, Anne the intense one. They both have megawatt smiles. They're as right for each other on screen as Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell were in "Broadway Melody of 1940," when their dancing electrified the screen like nothing before or since...
