There is a possibility that some of you may have spent a good bite out of yesterday lining up outside an Apple store to get your mits on the latest crop of tasty telephones. Jake Gyllenhaal has of course proved his commitment to the brand over the years and was one of the first to grab hold of the iPad, back in those Wondercon (April 2010) days.
He also likes to take his iPad for a walk.
Jake also has other uses for it.
But all this talk of Apple reminded me that I have yet to post the videos that turned up from Jake's visit, along with Duncan Jones and Michelle Monaghan, to the Apple store in NYC as part of the Love and Other Drugs promotion. You can see a snippet of the Q&A itself here but there are other videos of Jake arriving and leaving.
Today we were promised what may well turn out to be the last sunny warm day of the year and so off we went on the motorbike into the Cotswolds. In one village we were surprised to see a river full of baby ducklings - about ten of them. I don't think I've ever seen any so late in the year before. This has been a very odd Autumn. Among the photos below are the Roman amphitheatre in Cirencester, the beautiful village of Bisley and the view from a massive Iron Age hillfort close to Stroud in Gloucestershire.
It may have been warm for much of the day but I can confirm that this all changed on the long ride home and I am still a popsicle...
I'm delighted to report that our friends across the pond have been snapping up blu rays and dvds of Source Code by the bag full. So much so, Source Code debuted at the top of the sales and rental charts. 41% of sales were on blu rays, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Clearly, the early video on demand release has done nothing to affect sales, only serving to whet appetites for this fantastic film. Appropriately, we have a new photo of Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan (thanks to IHJ).
We shouldn't forget, though, that some countries have yet to see Source Code in the theatres, let alone on their TV screens. It isn't released in Japan until 28 October. With huge thanks to Mayumintolor in Japan, here is the poster from Japan where Source Code is known as Mission: 8 Minutes.
America Ferrera on the End of Watch set
I'm delighted to say Jake and Michael Pena were back on set in LA again yesterday. This time, they had an addition to the team, America Ferrera (aka Ugly Betty).
For some reason, known only to no-one, Mother's Day has different dates in the USA from the UK, possibly to prevent clashes for those who have both American and British mums. UK mothers have had their lot for this year, but this coming Sunday it's the time of USA moms to feast on breakfasts cooked by toddlers. As part of the celebration, some stars have been asked to reveal the gifts and advice from their mothers that they treasure the most. Jake Gyllenhaal is among those asked. 'The best advice my mother ever gave me was always know somewhere why you're doing something, particularly if you commit yourself to something. Know why, know why in your heart and believe it.'
Actually, that wasn't the best advice Banksy-buying Naomi ever gave to her son. The best advice she gave Jake was 'Don't ever cut all your hair off again and if you're going to wear the same trousers pants all week, make sure you've got a needle and thread with you, my boy.' Jake just chose not to follow it, preferring the go with your heart advice instead.
Source Code Reaches Down Under
If you're in Australia and New Zealand, then today is 5 May (and count yourself lucky as that means you are now beyond the endless Star Wars May the Fourth jokes) and that is the date that Source Code opens on your shores. So please do go and see it, at least once. The next day, 6 May, Source Code reaches Poland. One of these days the time will come when we will all have seen and enjoyed this wonderful film. It's time for a street party! Wet Dark and Wild turns four years old today. Pretty much house trained and not too badly behaved when dragged around to the in-laws. And so, while I wait for Jake Gyllenhaal to come round with trifle and cake in one hand (he does have big hands) and a magnum of bubbly in the other, festooned in bunting, it's time for a quick recap of what Jake has been up to this weekend. Mostly, he's been sorting out hats - and hanging out with this chap.
On Friday, Jake attended the Railroad Revival Tour show in San Pedro, which is in LA and not in Spain as I initially thought. It did include Mumford and Sons and so I wouldn't have been at all surprised if it had been Spain because Jake is, after all, their number one famous fan. The band also gives Jake the chance to holler at someone else for a change instead of being hollered at. Jake also grabbed the opportunity to hide his shiny noggin with another hand and distort his face through multiple funny expressions. Photos abound from fans at the event as well as tweets of sightings of Jake at the show and before it, engaged in one of his favourite activities, buying coffee. This fun picture is from Bobushnell and features Jake and director Emmett Malloy. There are some other wonderful pictures there of the event from backstage.

A couple of catch-up videos. This first one, although not all of us may be able to understand the words, shows Jake looking, in my eyes, his most lovely. I'm also partial to a bit of knitwear.
This second video has the dubious honour of being just about the worst interview I have ever seen and I give full credit to Jake and Michelle Monaghan for getting through it!

Weird things are afoot in England - we have had warm sunshine for days and more days of warm sunshine with blue skies stretch on ahead of us, as surely this is an April for the record books (at least until 29 April when it's bound to chuck it down). As a result, I have been spending less time in front of a computer than is usual and more time in front of a book, sitting outside with a cool beer in hand, telling the birds to shut up and flicking ants off my deckchair. Seriously, Jake Gyllenhaal and Bear Grylls had it easy in Iceland. And so that means I have some catching up to do. On Cinemania there is also an interview with Jake from Spain in which he talks about scifi films that he enjoyed as a youngster. He mentions Innerspace and, surely what must be one of the best films of any kind, Back to the Future. WDW Spring Oxford Interlude
Today I headed off with Mr WDW to find some lunchtime ice cream. This also doubled up as an excuse to engage in that favourite Oxford summertime hobby - watching people upset the ducks and crash into one another on the Isis (as the Thames is known in Oxford). We overheard a chap renting out the punts that they are unsinkable. I've heard that one before...
Jake Gyllenhaal and Duncan Jones - aka Team Source Code - have landed in Madrid and are getting ready for press day tomorrow. So while Jake relaxes with Rescue Remedy, goes for a run, checks out local restaurants and drinks lots of water (I'd recommend San Miguel myself), we have a chance to catch up and there is an awful lot to catch up with. First off, it looks like Jake has a co-star for End of Watch and he is Michael Pena. Shooting will start in July in LA. Jake will play cop Taylor while Michael will be cop Zavala. Thanks to Monica for the heads up.
Secondly, I am delighted to post a link to a great interview with Jake in which he says how much he loves London, Britain and Brits. We love talent, and if we see a sprout, we fertilise it and let it grow. I am thrilled to hear Jake talk about how much Britain, a nation famed for its love of Donnie Darko, means to him. After Prince of Persia, Jake is, of course, an honorary Brit. He has the 'estuary accent' to prove it. Ostensibly, Jake was there to talk about Edible Schoolyard...
Talking about good causes, not to mention Gyllenisms, Jake has also been quoted in the New York Post from his New Eyes for the Needy appearance at the weekend: 'While sheepishly admitting that he wore contacts, and glasses if he "needed to look smart," the star told the audience how he first learned about the organization: "When I was a kid, my grandfather asked me to donate my glasses to Needy Eyes. 'No way,' I said, 'I can't part with them . . .' I have since learned the error of my ways." He closed by begging the crowd to pay up, telling them, "Fork over your dollars like an old man at a strip club!"'
There is more from the Apple chat on Friday night: 'When asked by a high schooler if acting was a viable career path, Gyllenhaal immediately quipped, "Is there something wrong with you?... It's just about doing it right when it feels right. It's about listening to people and being present with other people," said the Academy Award-nominated actor, who grew up with both parents working in Hollywood. "That's what they always say about acting."'
'"The best directors I've worked with have the people around them they've started out with. When I met Jim Sheridan, he had the same people around him since the beginning." On his favorite actress he's starred with, Gyllenhaal was initially less diplomatic. "Definitely not Michelle! No, each one has their own special..." he grinned, then turned to his female costar. "Man, this iPad is really going to be worth it!."'

There's a huge amount to post this evening but before we get going on the Gyllengoodies, it appears from initial US box office reports that Source Code was second on its opening night (inevitably beaten by a film about a rabbit that poops jelly beans) and is well on its way to achieving $15 million from its first weekend. So congratulations to Duncan Jones, Jake Gyllenhaal and all concerned in creating a movie that has got everyone talking and has attracted fantastic reviews. I rather liked this summary as well as this look at Duncan Jones, the tweeter.
In my local Apple store, you get a few iPads and iPhones on display and even an available shop assistant if you're very lucky. In NYC, you get Jake Gyllenhaal. Last night, Jake, Duncan and Michelle Monaghan (wearing the most extraordinary heels that make me dizzy just looking at them) took part in a Meet the Filmmakers session in the store. Not everyone managed to get in. You can get an idea of the atmosphere from this picture. But for those who did...

Earlier in the evening, Jake had taken part in a silent auction for New Eyes for the Needy and you can read a little about that here. Jake talks a little about the charity in a great feature in today's Telegraph. The magazine not only features Jake on the cover, it also has a fascinating interview in which Jake mentions that he's spent an entire year publicising films (three of them) and as a result has not been able to make any. With End of Watch set to begin filming in July, presumably in LA, it looks as if Jake will be glad to be back at work. You can read the interview here - just click on the scans.
