An image arrived on the internets this weekend (thanks to the Golden Globes Twitter feed) and it's enough to put anyone in a tizzy! Jake Gyllenhaal's physical transformation for Nightcrawler was followed by another physical transformation in completely the other direction for Southpaw. Jake must wonder if he's coming or going sometimes.... He must have different wardrobes for 'Thin Jake' and 'Jake with Muscles Jake'.
So, with no further ado, please meet Billy Hope! *gulps*

Jake appeared on the Late Show with Letterman on 26 November. Here's the full interview:
Well, that is a look! So what do you think?
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I wonder how Jake took this physical change from one extreme to the other WITHIN a year or so. A few days ago he admitted that after NIGHTCRAWLER he needed about eight months to gain the weight back. And what happened then? After completing NIGHTCRAWLER he just did not stop when he had reached his "normal" weight again but just began to prepare for his next movie by putting on even MORE??? But SOUTHPAW is not his next movie at all. Before this he managed to do EVEREST and DEMOLITION in spring and late summer/early fall. I do hope he's not going to suffer a complete physical breakdown due to all this stress. Yet, he suffers (?) for his art, does he not??? The first SOUTHPAW still is not very lovely to look at (to say the least). I especially "loath" the tattoo on his shaved and pumped up chest. Thank GOD it's only a fake. Remember JARHEAD, girls? In this film Jake's muscles were very lovely to look at. Then PRINCE OF PERSIA; already too many fleshy muscles. And now ... THIS ... ...
ReplyDeleteWell, let's hope Jake's acting in SOUTHPAW will be as mesmerising as usual, despite all these "mountains of flesh"!!
Hi Antje! This is a very intimidating photo. That's a great reminder about Everest - I really can't wait to see that one. He really does suffer for his art. The performances are outstanding as a result. IT must be exhausting for him, though. I loved the PoP and Jarhead muscles but I fear this may be a muscle too far!
ReplyDeleteHi Kate! That still from Southpaw is rather intimidating, isn't it? A bit scary even. Must be just right for the character, though. Jake has said in interviews that his favorite part of making a movie is the preparation and developing the character. He must have had a rollicking good time bringing Billy Hope to life. Can't wait to see it! I have a feeling the majority of the comments and interview questions will deal with the extreme differences between Lou Bloom and Billy Hope. Maybe Everest will be released first and give us something to admire between the extremes.
ReplyDeleteJakey - from ascetic to butch/beef-cake in less than a year. Whatever next??????!??
ReplyDeletePS: I especially like your "gulps", Kate. This word says it all.
PPS: Maybe Jake is a secret fan / secret regular reader of this blog and is deeply touched by how concerned his most loyal fans are about his health, his well-being and all the different physical states he's been in recently.
I have to say the SouthPaw muscle man look is not my favourite but hell what dedication to get your body to that state! Such commitment to his craft is nothing short of inspiring. I feel like this year has been an embarrassment of riches for all of us as far as Jake's career is concerned. The amazing thing tho might be despite the weight loss and the weight gain and the wiry look and the pumped up look, Jake never seems to lose his green pants! There's something hilarious and equally sweet about that. He's such a classic!

Hi Susan - it is! And yes, you can hear the questions already :) Cannot wait for Everest. It'll feature less flesh but it sounds so good :)
ReplyDeleteHi Antje! I hate to think! I still want to see Jake in Space. Wonder what he could do for that... We are, we are concerned :)
Hi Malavika! Enormous dedication - Jake does himself proud, time after time. I like that! He is :)
Have a good day everyone!
But now for something completely different (for a change)!
ReplyDeleteI've just discovered photographs on IHJ showing Jake with a new dog!! A "New York City Dog". Quite like a young(er) "edition/version/lookalike" of old Atticus, but no more floppy ear. Poor Atticus - is he left alone / left behind in Los Angeles??? Seems so ... ... ...
The new dog's name is Leo.
ReplyDeleteDidn't I read somewhere Jake's dad (who lives in L.A., I think) is taking care of Atticus? I could be wrong, though.
Seems like most concern over the 'Southpaw' picture comes from seeing it so soon after 'Nightcrawler'. Most people on the internet don't seem to realize Jake did another movie inbetween - like Susan said. Of course we know better :-)
@Sonja
ReplyDeleteHmmmm, Jake’s dad Stephen took over the job? Well now, that’s a relief. Thank God, good old Atticus is still taken care of by a member of the "Gyllen-clan". So he won’t be feeling completely lost, I should say.
Poor old Atticus..... Hello everyone! New post :)
ReplyDeletewow excellent work i like your approach.
