See Jake Gyllenhaal and Bear Grylls as they get ready to go wild in the country

After all the talk yesterday of Man Vs Wild, we have a picture today of Jake Gyllenhaal and Bear Grylls about to take off and tackle everything Iceland could chuck at them in the shape of hurricane force winds, glacial crevices, stormy rivers and snow snake soup. Both look suitable rugged in matching outfits. Bear posted the picture today with this tweet: 'Jake Gyllenhaal and me prep for our Icelandic mission - little did we know we were to be hammered by 90+mph winds!' Looks like they were well prepared.

My review of Green Lantern is now up at MovieBrit.

Source Code reaches France! That means more Jake Gyllenhaal interviews. Plus Iceland gets star struck and a video catchup

Source Code is released in France and Belgium today, creating the same interest in Jake Gyllenhaal and Duncan Jones in the local media that has been seen elsewhere over the last few weeks. And you know what they say... you can never have enough Jake Gyllenhaal interviews. There is a particularly good one from 7sur7. This post also gives me a chance to catch up with some of the video interviews.

I realise that much of the world has yet to see Source Code and so as always I'm avoiding spoilers, so do check out this interview using Google Translate. But as far as the non-spoilers go 'I like films that deal with issues that are a little philosophical, psychological, creating a mystery that opens the mind. Here, one wonders what another dimension might look like. I love being on the verge of madness, not to be in reality. And I love watching movies like that.'

And what to do with that eight minutes in real life? 'What disaster could you prevent? Might it prevent the disaster happening today in Japan for example? You could also find yourself in the body of people like JFK in the last 8 minutes of their lives. If a computer program could return to their bodies just before they die, what would we do? It was a fascinating idea. Where would we be now? What would have happened in history? For me, there are ramifications to every choice you make in life. But what is most interesting is the idea that you could save lives, you can keep people together, united. It's fascinating.'

'There's always time to fall in love in life. He is a character who realizes, after the third source code that manipulates everyone, nobody told him the truth, he feels lost. I think about love, whether it's with your family, your friends, your partner, that's all about seeing people, love is a matter of seeing the other person, to see who she is. And at one point, he returned to the train, and he sees this girl as she is, honest, she is the only person he can trust. And it stirs something in him.'

There has been a fun account of Jake's visit to Iceland, or rather his visit to a restaurant in Iceland, published today by the girl lucky enough to have served Jake and stayed admirably calm and cool throughout.

'The most famous celebrity I've met in Iceland is certainly Jake Gyllenhaal. I served him at the bar where I work and witnessed how the people around him behaved. Yes, they all wanted a piece of him. I felt almost embarrassed to watch Mr. Gyllenhaal being approached by several fans. Ok, mostly by women, who were basically throwing themselves at him. So classy. Even hours after he had left people were asking about him. One guy even ordered: “the same that Jake Gyllenhaal had.”'

'Don't get me wrong, I understand the attraction such a famous person has. I, too, was impressed and a bit star struck when the Prince of Persia suddenly stood before me and ordered a beer. I even bragged about having served Donnie Darko, I mean Jake Gyllenhaal, and about the tip he gave me. But I stayed totally cool while serving him...'

'Anyway, I know one thing for sure: I will keep Jake Gyllenhaal's tip at home in a special place and never spend it. Well, at least not until I'm broke and need money for chocolate.'

It is a fascinating thought - you never know quite how you'll behave with a Hollywood star until they're right in front of you placing an order for dinner. That is compounded when that star is as charismatic and stunning as Jake Gyllenhaal. I remember watching Nicole Kidman in a restaurant - not a soul there could keep their eyes off her - she looked like the epitome of a movie star and was gracious to everyone. I could see then the reason why such people are referred to as Hollywood Royalty, Clearly they never go to the loo. Jake Gyllenhaal is another who has that look and grace and yes, I'll have what he's having too.

And finally...

I'm off away for a couple of days, heading south to the Isle of Wight - this means boats, sandy beaches, warm sunshine, blue seas and so much ice cream it's ridiculous. I'll be back Friday evening!

Pictures thanks to IHJ.

Jake's on a plane... (Iceland and the British Midlands)

Judging from the picture below taken at Reykjavik Airport (courtesy of vf.is), it looks like Bear Grylls was given some entertainment as he skinned and boiled snow snakes in the lava pools of Iceland. Yes, Jake Gyllenhaal decided that for his Man vs Wild episode travelling light was not an option if it meant that he could lead a singsong round the campfire. Admittedly, looking at this photo does give me some rather painful flashbacks of volunteers singing kumbaya late into the night at a certain archaeological dig I had the mixed pleasure to work at. However, according to vf, Jake visited the Blue Lagoon before he left Iceland. That is much better to think on.

On the plane itself, there are more photographs of Jake and Bear Grylls himself from Such a beautiful waste.

Talking of Jake on a plane, I thought it had to be some kind of kismet that Jake looked up at me from every single one of the plane seat pockets on my flights to and from Berlin last week. Jake covered the April edition of Voyager, the flight magazine of BMI or British Midland. I would like to thank the people next to me on both flights who decided to donate their magazines to a good cause - me. The photos may be the same as in the recent Telegraph magazine but the interview is different.

It includes a statement from Jake about the best way to survive the attention that being a superb and handsome actor attracts: 'You've got to plug your ears, tie yourself to the mast and beg the people you love not to untie you.'

And finally...

Many thanks to Eureka for sending me a scan of her autograph from Madrid. Very nice.

Jake Gyllenhaal up north in Iceland and still being proud of Donnie Darko and beating that train phobia

A year ago today Eyjafjallajökull blew its fuse and ejected untold masses of ash into the sky. While this meant days of quiet skies, with not a white trail in sight, I do remember the anxiety of wondering if it would put pay to the Prince of Persia London premiere. Little could I have imagined that a year one Jake Gyllenhaal would be clambering about on the slopes of this volcano in the company of Bear Grylls. It also gave Jake the perfect opportunity to pop into the 66°North shop in Bankastraeti in Reykjavik and buy some hardy clothes for the trip.

But unlike those of us who are content to spend a flight watching romcoms while quaffing GnTs, Jake and Bear Grylls posed with fans.

Jake also bumped into Sigurjón Sighvatsson, a producer of Brothers. And Google translates... : 'It was a coincidence and it was really fun to meet him. He spoke very beautifully about the land' and the rest makes no google sense.

The wait for Jake Gyllenhaal vs The Wild will not be easy (although why Bear didn't take Jake off to some hot land with waterfalls and coconuts and coral reefs is beyond me). In the meantime we have bounty such as this interview with Maxim to enjoy.

Q: Did you ever imagine that the entire world would be able to pronounce your last name? JG: That was always the goal. When your name has that many letters and syllables, the only choice you have is to go into public life.

Q Is there anyone who still gets it wrong, like telemarketers? JG: They just sort of mumble it, like, “Hello, Mr. Blahblahblah,” as if their phone went through a bad patch. But there’s an odd mangling of the name pretty much on a daily basis.

Q: Tell us about Source Code. It’s a tough one to explain. JG: Yeah, I’m going to try to only make movies that are inexplicable, so people have to go see them. It really helps ticket sales. But, really, Source Code is a weird amalgamation of genres. Ultimately it’s a story about someone who is unconscious becoming conscious of his life.

Q: Part of the plot involves a train blowing up. Did shooting the movie make you wary of railroad travel? JG: I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with train travel, because when I was a kid I had a horrible nightmare on a train. So maybe Source Code was a way for me to resolve some of those issues I had as a five-year-old.

Q: Your Source Code character is in the military, but it’s a very different role than the one you played in Jarhead. JG: Jarhead was full-on immersion into the world of the Marines, and in this case my character is a helicopter pilot in the Army. That’s also a fascinating subject to learn about, but definitely different. Jarhead involved, like, a month of boot camp.

Q: Do you get marines coming up to you to talk about Jarhead? JG: All the time, and they have differing opinions. They say things like, “That part was bullshit, but I liked the movie.” One guy came up to me recently and said, “My friend enlisted because of that movie.” I feel like everybody involved in Jarhead would have different opinions about encouraging someone to enlist.

Q: You probably also get geeks coming up to you to talk about Donnie Darko. Are you a fan? JG: Are you kidding me? I’m prouder of Donnie Darko than almost any other movie I’ve made, and I happen to be proud of a lot of them. Watching it is a rite of passage, it seems, at certain times in people’s lives. Q: What do people say about it? JG: Someone will come up to me and say, “Hey, man, I watched Donnie Darko,” and I’m like, “Oh, that’s awesome, man.” Then they’re like, “No, man, I watched Donnie Darko.” Q: What exactly does that mean? JG: I have no fucking clue! Apparently people are having a good time watching Donnie Darko. I don't want to know.

Q: You must get some pretty strong responses about Brokeback Mountain as well. JG: I’ve had people say stuff to me—stuff like, “Brokeback Mountain changed my life”—and then I’ve had people come up to me and say, “I’d never see that movie.” What I find amazing is some audiences’ inability to separate characters from the actors who play them. Q: So you don’t go to Mexico anymore? Is that what you mean? JG: [Laughs] I don’t even know how to answer that. The truth is, when my character goes to Mexico and picks up that dude in the alleyway, it’s actually the cinematographer. Q: Wait. So director Ang Lee was just like, “We need a creepy- looking Latino guy. Hey, you!” JG: Yes, that’s exactly what happened. I had to do, like, 15 takes. I couldn’t hold my shit together ’cause it was Rodrigo.

Q: When you put on plaid, do you think about your character? Do you think about my character? JG: Uh, no? Do you have buddies who are like, “I’m not gonna go camping with you anymore!”? Oh, man. This interview is really going south...not that far south!

Q: Do people make The Day After Tomorrow jokes to you whenever there’s a really big snowstorm? JG: No. But I do feel like we’re starting to live in that movie. It’s scary how prophetic Roland Emmerich was.

Q: What’s it like being on all those “Hottest Bachelor” and “50 Most Beautiful” lists? JG: People don’t realize what a rigorous testing process it is to even be considered for those lists. Those who make it really have been through a great deal. Q: Like you and 1986 Ted Danson. JG: Yes! Really, it’s an honor and the barometer for everything in my career and why I make choices I make. And I’m totally aware that there’s no irony in print.

Q: Every woman, from our girlfriends to our sisters to our moms, is in love with you. What’s your secret? JG: It’s all about getting on a “Sexiest Man” list. If you can work that out, then I think you’re pretty much golden. No, you should read Maxim; that’s where I get it. And always be a gentleman. Q: You’ve dated some beautiful and talented women—Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman, Taylor Swift, Reese Witherspoon. Which of them would make the best Maxim cover? JG: Uh, I got nothing for you there.

Q: Fine. What was the worst hangover you’ve ever had? JG: It unfortunately involved a night of mixing red wine and vodka. Not advised. Stay away.

Q: Finally, what do you wish you could tell your 18-year-old self? JG: I’d say, “Lighten up, dude. Bubble Boy is a lot better than everybody says it is.”

Jake Gyllenhaal survives 'the wildest and best of Icelandic nature' and Source Code in the magazines

I am delighted to report that while Jake Gyllenhaal and Bear Grylls survived a weekend on the jagged glaciers of Iceland, they also 'definitely got the wildest and best of Icelandic nature'. In other words, think tempest and gales. However, it was definitely easier for Jake and Bear to trek along the Eyjafjallajökull glacier in the Fimmvörduháls mountain range than it was for me to spell this sentence.

There is a little more information on this episode of Man Vs Wild here as well as this tweet from Bear: 'just got off the glaciers and volcanos after Jake Gyllenhaal Man Vs Wild. Full on in a storm. We both survived!' This tweet has now been deleted - maybe it contained too many spoilers. Other tweets now suggest Jake is back in NYC.

Back off the mountain slopes, Source Code continues to do well in the theatres. In the UK, Rio knocked Hop off the top spot but Source Code stayed strong at number 2 despite the hot weather. Source Code appears in the May edition of DVD Review and you can see that below. Just click and the scans will be embiggened.

In Berlin, Jake signed a couple of images for Christina and I'm so pleased to show the photos of them here. Memories are made...
