Star Trek Interlude: 'They like you very much, but they are not the hell your whales'

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, there was a rumour that Jake Gyllenhaal was a big possibility for the role of Captain Marvel. This, however, was a typo of big bang proportions - in virtual reality it was not the tights of Captain Marvel that Jake wished to don, it was the bell bottoms and black beetlecrushers of Captain James T Kirk... But as this was not to be made so, I thought instead I would Trek Jake into Spock - or, as he is never known, Spake.

It is a well known anomaly that no-one knew as much about space time continuums and singularities and folds in space like Donnie Darko. And while we wait to learn if Jake will be boldly going into Doug Liman's vision of space colonisation - a project that is redefining the term 'If in doubt, rewrite, rewrite, rewrite' - I like to think that a science fiction revival may lead Jake to make that one giant leap into the final frontier. As the respected Klingon warrior/philosopher Worf once never said: "Jake tuj 'a Jake daq latlh tuj" (which roughly translates as 'Jake is hot but Jake in space is hotter'). Jake has certainly mastered one Spockism:

'I call them ears'.

... and another:

'There is a multi-legged creature crawling on your shoulder'.

This post is headed by what is possibly my favourite Spock quote which I tried and failed to relate to Jake because we rarely see Jake in a marine context and also because I don't think he's been to Wales, which is a shame, because it's lovely.

Happy Mother's Day to all the appropriate parts of Earth celebrating it today.

Brokeback continues to provoke debate, and Maggie and Peter out and about with the stars

The decision of RAI, the state broadcasting company of Italy, to broadcast Brokeback Mountain on Monday night, at 10.45pm, minus the sex and kissing scenes between Jack and Ennis, has caused a furore that could result in a parliamentary debate. Whether it was a mistake (the channel insist the full version will be broadcast soon) or whether it was due to Vatican pressure, may not be determined, but the excuse that the channel did not have a full copy of the movie seems a little lame. The heterosexual love scene was left intact.

Nevertheless, the whole affair has caused a debate, something that has followed Brokeback since its very beginnings and this can only be for the ultimate good. I'm reminded of that famous line from the film, broadcast by a US station, 'Jack Frederick Twist'.

Maggie and Peter in NYC

Maggie has been out and about again, this time at Tuesday's party for Ray-Ban’s re-released Clubmaster frames. It is hoped that not too many celebrities were damaged during the course of the evening (sunglasses were a compulsory accessory). Maggie is so good at winter chic.

Deep breaths for this section of the post... As a stalwart Trekkie of many years' standing I was thrilled to see this picture of our Peter alongside that Voyager legend Kate Mulgrew, Captain Kathryn Janeway herself. The event was Monday's Gypsy of the Year competition in NYC, and the planets were perfectly aligned to seat Peter and Kate next to each other.

And finally, I need to see this picture again, I hope you don't mind...
