An image arrived on the internets this weekend (thanks to the Golden Globes Twitter feed) and it's enough to put anyone in a tizzy! Jake Gyllenhaal's physical transformation for Nightcrawler was followed by another physical transformation in completely the other direction for Southpaw. Jake must wonder if he's coming or going sometimes.... He must have different wardrobes for 'Thin Jake' and 'Jake with Muscles Jake'.

So, with no further ado, please meet Billy Hope! *gulps*

Nailed to get a UK release in 2015! Plus new movie news and more Nightcrawling from Jake Gyllenhaal

Well, who'd have thought it?! After all this time and talk, the news is in that the distributors Arrow have bought Nailed - now renamed as Politics of Love - for a UK release during 2015! Personally, I don't care what they call it just so long as it sees the light of day in one form or another. And even if it's a strictly limited release this at least might mean a DVD that all fans can enjoy. More details ehre from Playlist, with thanks to Sasha for the heads up!

And there's more - Jake has a New Project! Hollywood Reporter tells us that Jake will team up with 'The Equalizer director Antoine Fuqua for The Man Who Made It Snow, a 1980s crime movie that IM Global is launching at AFM. Gyllenhaal will star as the man in the title, Max Mermelstein, purported to be the only American who was in the inner circle of the Colombian cartels in the go-go 1980s. Snow is a biopic of the man and is based on his autobiography.Brett Tabor wrote the script. Gyllenhaal will produce with Fuqua, Tabor and IM Global's Matt Jackson. Mermelstein was the point man in America for the Medellin cartel, helping smuggle tons of cocaine in the 1980s. He was eventually arrested and became a key informant and witness for the U.S. government, and spent his last years living in the Witness Protection Program. He died in 2008 and his eulogy was given by Tabor, who became interested in the man as potential movie material and tracked the man down.

Phew! Deep breaths! After that excitement, here's some more - Jake Gyllenhaal on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as part of the Nightcrawler release. Thanks to IHJ, you can watch it all here.

Bits and pieces

There is a full 30-minute interview here with Jake and Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy for AOL Build.

There is a great new interview with Jake over at Buzzfeed here “I think acting is an incredibly immature, incredibly selfish profession,” he said, cringing just a bit. “But at the same time, at the opposite end of the spectrum — or maybe not, but I think it is — [there is] the opportunity to practice great empathy.”

In this interview, we hear about how the car chase scene in Nightcrawler was filmed:

Here, Jake talks about what Brokeback Mountain means to him as well as its political legacy:

Here is Jake on BET 106 and Park.

Nightcrawler is out today! Jake Gyllenhaal on the box

It's Halloween! And that can mean only one thing - Nightcrawler is released in the US and UK today. At last! I was lucky enough to see it last weekend and Jake Gyllenhaal gives one of those performances we'll be talking of for years and it's completely unlike any other role of his. This is also one of those rare Jake movies where Jake is on screen for almost every frame of the movie. You can also pick up some camera tips.

The release of Nightcrawler is big news among the chat shows and Jake (and the love Rene Russo) has been doing the rounds, including a long awaited reappearance on Ellen. Here are some videos and links to other videos. Enjoy your Halloween! And thank you so much to IHJ! There is more to come but I thought this was a good place to start to get you in the mood!

With the release of Nightcrawler less than a week away, the publicity is hotting up.! With huge thanks to IHJ, here is Jake on this morning's Good morning America. The video won't embed but you can watch it here. You can also watch an interview with Jake in Coming Soon here.

There is also a brief look here behind the scenes at Jake's current filming project, Demolition:

There are also photos at IHJ so do take a look.

More interviews:

Here are a few more TV spots!

And a UK TV spot! I must look out for this...

Right, that's enough for the time being. There will be more! Plus if all goes according to plan, I'll be able to see Nightcrawlers this weekend. Hopefully.

A catch up with Jake Gyllenhaal and a WDW Spanish Interlude!

Good to see you all! I had a fabulous time in Spain (Interlude below). Jake Gyllenhaal, meanwhile, is currently busy filming Demolition in NYC but with the release date of Nightcrawler looming (31 October), there are more images and posters, not to mention a TV spot! Special screenings have also been held in NYC and LA. Do check out IHJ for images.

It's not just films, though. This December Jake makes his Broadway debut in Constellations and tickets are available now at the end of this link.

On 1 October, Jake took part in the Headstrong Project's Words of War, a benefit in support of mental healthcare for military veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq. Jake read a poem by Derrick Brown - You Will Be Destroyed in Your Own Way. Jake said: 'It is an honor and privilege to be here tonight,” Gyllenhaal added, “I know a lot say that, but it genuinely is.”' More details here.

There are more photos and lovely things at IHJ.

A WDW Spanish Interlude

Until last month, my only experience of Spain was a day trip back in another century. It was wonderful to get the chance to explore Andalucia, one of the most beautiful places I've visited (and I can certainly recommend the wine!). The trip took us from Seville and the Roman city of Italica to Cordoba, Ronda, Granada, Guadix and, finally, for a spot of sea, Alicante with its beautiful bars and incredible trees and fort. I thought I'd post a few of the photos.

Big catch up: Jake Gyllenhaal in Toronto! Videos and interviews. Plus more...

How about this! Thirty minutes of watching and listening to Jake Gyllenhaal give a radio interview with CBC's Jian Ghomeshi. Definitely one to savour.

And there's more...

Jake has continued to be busy promoting Nightcrawler which opens in the US an UK this 31 October. Playlist have published a wonderful interview that they conducted with Jake during a 'seven-minute car ride' that took place during the Toronto Film Festival.

Here Jake talks about the research he conducted for Nightcrawler in LA: '“It’s like a Batmobile,” continues Gyllenhaal, regarding the police scanner setup the nightcrawlers he shadowed had in their car. “It’s pretty cool how they use the sensors that they use, particularly their hearing, because they have 15 scanners going on at once. The level of noise going on at one time is fascinating. They tune their senses to a very specific thing. They are like animals. It’s got a very animal Wild West quality to it. They’re outside the norm, not only are they up at night, but what they’re doing is so…you know they’re searching for tragedy and they’re racing to it at 120mph, which is not always the safest thing.”'

And there is a little piece about Demolition, which is to begin filming shortly: “It’s a movie about a guy who’s losing his wife and it basically tears apart his life as a result of what happened, but it does it in the most interesting ways, literally and figuratively,”

There is another great interview from Toronto here. I love its conclusion: '“I don’t think I go into a movie saying, ‘I’m just going to knock this one off,’ ” Gyllenhaal says. “I go, ‘I know this is going to change me.’ And I don’t want to do it if it’s not.”'

During the Toronto Festival, Jake attended the gala of Denzel Washington's The Equalizer, producing some great photo opportunities.

On 11 September, Jake Gyllenhaal was one of many celebrities who helped raise funds during this year's Cantor Fitzgerald Annual Charity Day in New York. Jake's mission was to help out a charity close to his heart New Eyes for the Needy. There is a great photo and message from Cantor Fitzgerald here and here there are more details about the significance of this event.

Thanks very much to IHJ for the photos in this post. And finally...

I'm off to Spain tonight for a week so I'll see you later!

Nightcrawler premieres at TIFF! Videos, photos and reviews: 'Jake Gyllenhaal at his best!'

Jake Gyllenhaal and the fans braved the Toronto rain last night for the gala premiere of Nightcrawler, an event that was accompanied by rave reviews - 'Jake Gyllenhaal at his best' is just one. And I've gotta say, Jake looked a treat!

There are also some great photos of Jake with co-star the lovely Rene Russo, as well as some fab pics of Jake doing publicity interviews before, such as this one.

There is a report here along with some video. It all brings back some great memories of my 2007 TIFF trip.

There are lots of videos, including this brilliant Variety video of the cast being interviewed.

A couple of reviews for now: Playlist, The Wrap

There are lots of photos on IHJ so do take a look. I'm away for the weekend but I wanted to get something up before I leave. I'll update the post when I get back. Have a great weekend! What a wonderful start to it.

Nightcrawler to close Fantastic Fest and a new interview with Jake Gyllenhaal

With Nightcrawler's premiere just two days away (it opens at Toronto International Film Festival in a gala on Friday 5 September), there is news that Nightcrawler will also close Fantastic Fest which takes place in Austin, Texas, from 18-25 September. Presumably and hopefully that will mean another red carpet event!

There is also a great new interview with Jake Gyllenhaal in Variety - this is probably the fullest interview we've seen with Jake for quite some time, and it's a goodie! There is more on the mirror hand cutting incident and lots on the Jake Coyoti Diet and Fitness Plan.

'"I would try to eat as few calories as possible,” he says. “I knew if I was hungry that I was in the right spot. Physically, it showed itself, but chemically and mentally, I think it was even a more fascinating journey. It became a struggle for me.” On some nights, he wouldn’t eat at all, or he’d only nibble on small pieces of meat, crackers or kale salad. “When you watch the film and see the angularity of his face, the hollow cheeks, the way that his eyes become prominent,” Gilroy says, “it’s such a haunting look for a night shoot.” Gyllenhaal would run 15 miles from his house to the set in the evenings to stay lanky. The inspiration for the fast-talking character came from the animal world. “There was a general sense that he was a coyote,” Gyllenhaal says. “I just wanted to live that way.”'

It is also fascinating to hear about Jake's preparation to play his Southpaw boxing character - extraordinary dedication. I can't help hoping that sooner or later Jake will get the chance to play a character having a lovely, relaxing holiday.

'“As an actor, you’re constantly true to your feelings and the feelings of a character,” he says. “The most interesting moments are always the most unexpected. I’m not saying it’s a positive thing to get hurt and have to get stitches in your hand. But to me, the scar is about a certain type of commitment.”'

Updated with new trailer! Another peep at Nightcrawler plus confirmation that Jake Gyllenhaal is expected at TIFF for its premiere

Updated to add official trailer number 2 for Nightcrawler!

Buon giorno! Despite all the efforts of various airlines to prevent it, I am back from Rome! Unfortunately, I seem to have left summer behind. Never mind, time to warm up with the latest peek at Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal's next movie, thanks to IHJ. You can watch it here.

You'll notice from this that the US release date has been put back from 17 October to the appropriately spooky date of 31 October. Fortunately, this is nothing like the length of delays we've been used to in the past - remember those long delays for Brothers and Prince of Persia? Painful...

The good news is that there is confirmation from TIFF that Jake will be attending the festival premiere of Nightcrawler on 5 September.

Finally, Naomi Foner has been talking about Jake and Maggie during the publicity for Very Good Girls. She told ABC News: '"Jake was in the editing room frequently. He was the one who pointed out that Boyd's character was like Clarence in 'It's a Wonderful Life,' who comes in and tells them something they need to know," she said. "He gave me some great advice during the making of this... I can’t say that there’s anything that gives me more pleasure than to get to the point where my children are my friends. I adore my kids. They are spectacular," she said. "Nothing is more important than family."'

Nightcrawler! Trailers and news of the film's special presentation at this year's TIFF

Nightcrawler approaches! Jake Gyllenhaal's next movie Nightcrawler arrives in US cinemas on 17 October but, as now seems traditional with Jake's movies, it will also be showing at the Toronto International Festival - its special presentation will take place at the Elgin Theatre on 5 September at 9.30pm.

It's fitting then that we now have not only a promotional clip 'Hardworker seeking a job' but also the first official trailer.

The blurb with the trailer tells us: 'NIGHTCRAWLER is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling -- where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives. In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story.'

There is also a poster to go with the trailer, as seen on Awards Circuit

So, whaddya think?!

Catch up: Jake Gyllenhaal turns Pittsburgh into NYC and Maggie is an Honourable Woman

Good to see you all! I'm back from one lovely long holiday in Cornwall (having returned looking like a radioactive lobster) and now getting ready for another jaunt to Rome. Jake Gyllenhaal is working through his summer, with shooting continuing on Pittsburgh into next month at least.

This report from Pittsburgh shows how the city is being transformed into NYC, complete with billboard posters of Jake's - or Hope's - next fight:

'The former Saks building is being turned into Madison Square Garden for the movie featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, 50 Cent, and Lupita Nyong’o. A banner advertising “the light heavyweight championship” boxing match between Gyllenhaal’s Billy Hope and another boxer hung outside the building. New York City taxi cabs and police cars were also seen on Smithfield Street. The film is shooting in Pittsburgh through early August. The film previously shot in Indiana, Pa., in June.'

If you want to be an extra, there may still be time!

Maggie is making a bit of a splash on British small screens at the moment with the well-received The Honourable Woman. To mark its screening, Maggie was interviewed in the Guardian with this, less that controversial, comment about Jake: 'Understandably, Gyllenhaal discourages speculation about sibling rivalry. "He's one of my best friends and I really adore him,"' Incidentally, Maggie's English accent in The Honourable Woman is impeccable.

Thanks to IHJ for the new stills from Enemy. I love these posters.

I hope you're all having a good summer/winter!

Jake Gyllenhaal to make his Broadway debut with Constellations and begins Demolition talks

Jake Gyllenhaal might be busy at the moment filming Southpaw in Pittsburgh but there is some big news from New York City. Jake has repeatedly mentioned how much he enjoys acting on stage and following on from his 2012 success Off Broadway with If There Is I haven't Found It Yet (not to mention his huge success on the West End Boards in 2002 with This Is Our Youth), Jake is now to make another debut - this time on Broadway.

Jake is due to take to the Broadway stage with Constellations, a play that has a great deal in common with If There Is - same writer (Nick Payne), same director (Michael Longhurst), and both enjoyed great success during their London seasons.

The Guardian tells us about the play: 'It considers the idea of a multiverse – parallel universes with slightly differing possibilities – where the play's central couple sometimes live harmoniously in love, sometimes fractiously'.

Constellations will begin previews on 16 December at the Manhattan Theatre Club and opening night will be on 16 January. More details here. Looks like a busy birthday and Christmas for Jake again!

An interesting sidenote from the Guardian: 'His actor sister Maggie will also make her Broadway debut this year, opposite Ewan McGregor in Tom Stoppard's comedy The Real Thing.'

Demolition

In other news, Deadline has reported that Jake is in early talks to appear in Demolition directed by Jean-Marc Vallée of Dallas Buyers Club fame: 'The story centers on a young investment banker struggling to understand his emotional disconnect after the tragic death of his wife. He begins to tear apart his life in a distraught effort to see where he went wrong but ultimately is rescued by a woman he meets in a chance encounter.'

Ubuntu Education Fund

On 5 June, attended the 2014 NYC Ubuntu Education Fund Gala at Gotham Hall, which celebrated '15 years of life-saving work in South Africa,... We honored Frank and Janice Lipman, dedicated supporters of our work who truly embody the ubuntu spirit. It was an unforgettable evening spent dancing to Hugh Masekela with our inspired guests & dedicated supporters!' More details and photos here.

Boxing Training

Jake continues with the boxing research for Southpaw. On 7 June, Jake and Rachel McAdams,  his co-star in Southpaw, both went to a match between Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez at Madison Square Garden. You can see photos on IHJ.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Colm Toíbín: In Conversation - The Year of James Baldwin

Here it is, Jake Gyllenhaal in conversation with Colm Toíbín as part of Columbia University's celebration of author James Baldwin. It's over an hour long so sit back in a comfy chair, kick off your shoes (if it's safe to do so) and enjoy. But be warned. The event took place on 1 May so there's been no facial pruning as yet.

Tuesday 20 May 2014

Jake Gyllenhaal stars with Beyonce and Jay-Z and says goodbye to the long hair and beard! Plus movie news

Barely a year goes by without Jake Gyllenhaal making an appearance in a music video and 2014 is proving no different. Jake has been seen frequently in the company of Beyonce and Jay-Z and so it was a pleasant surprise to see him also pop up in the promotional video for their upcoming 'Run' tour.

The video also features WDW favourite Emmy Rossum, a fine singer in her own right. You can watch the video here.

But the big news is that Jake has decided to part company with the long hair and shaggy beard, as can be seen in the photos of him shopping in NYC yesterday! He's also back to chewing the headphone lead - just like the old days. Pap photos are no longer posted here so just follow the links.

The extensive barbering means that Everest is finished but there is more movie news this week. Nightcrawler has been picked up at Cannes by Open Road, which is also looked after End of Watch so well.

Finally, this weekend, if you're in the neighbourhood of Indiana, why not audition to be in Southpaw alongside Jake, or more precisely cheering him on from the other side of the ropes? Details here. Filming then moves on to Pittsburgh, the home, of course, of Love and Other Drugs. This might give Jake the chance to brush off that tattoo...

Tuesday 13 May 2014

Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal at the Met, a literary discussion and a May round up

The big event over recent days is the appearance of Jake Gyllenhaal with his sister Maggie at the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5 May. The theme for men this year was white suits and I'm glad to say that Jake did what he was told. For women, the theme was flowing dresses. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I do like Maggie's blonde do. Unfortunately, my invitation arrived too late.

On 1 May, Jake also took part in the discussion with Colm Toibin of James Baldwin's novel Another Country.  The event was part of Columbia University's Baldwin celebrations.

'On the afternoon of Sunday, May 4, 2014, Pioneer Works, Center for Art and Innovation will hold its first benefit fundraiser, The Village Fête. Our goal is to launch an annual coming-together of New York’s creative community and its supporters, a celebration of our founding mission for innovation in the contemporary arts and sciences. Bob Colacello, Maggie Gyllenhaal & Peter Sarsgaard, Sydie Lansing, Andres & Lauren Santo Domingo and Liv Tyler are chairing the event.' Jake was also there to lend a hand.

Over the last few weeks, Jake has been keeping up his boxing duties for Southpaw but he's been making sure to leave time for other sports. At the weekend, Jake watched the Brooklyn Nets take on Miami Heat in rather shiny company - Jay-Z and Beyonce. You can see a pic here and more on IHJ. Jake has also been seen out and about with Alyssa Miller in NYC on 10 May while on 8 May he was spotted wearing Mr WDW's jacket. No word yet on when we'll get it back.

Many thanks to IHJ for the wonderful new pics.

Thursday 24 April 2014

As WDW hits 7 years old, a catch up with Jake Gyllenhaal and an Italian and Welsh Interlude!

Today is the 7th birthday of Wet Dark and Wild! No longer a toddler, it's definitely moved on to the gin and tonic phase, especially if you consider that blog years are like dog years. They do rhyme, after all. As it is the anniversary, there's no better time than to catch up with Jake Gyllenhaal.

First off, thanks to IHJ, we can see scans of Jake on location for Everest in the June issue of Empire. I love this photo of Jake. Do click on them and they shall be embiggened.

With Everest in the bag, albeit a delayed and we might get to see it eventually bag, Jake is now moving onto other things and at the heart of it all appears to be Southpaw. Jake is in training mode, which can be seen by recent sightings and photos of him at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas and at a boxing match. You can see more of these over at IHJ. I do have to say, though, that this is not a role, or a look, that warms the cockles of my heart.

Jake has found the time for other more relaxing pursuits, including dinner with sister Maggie in Santa Monica (I love Maggie's new hairdo) and a trip out to watch old favourites Arcade Fire on 21 April in West Hollywood. Jake looked seriously peeved to be papped so let's leave it with a link.

WDW Italian and Welsh Interludes!

I have been quiet of late due to a) holidaying in Italy and Wales and b) due to eating too many Easter malteser chocolate bunnies. I promised an Italian Interlude in the last post but I was waylaid by Wales, which was beautiful and warm and sunny by day but by night, in a tent, was so cold it introduced a touch of hypothermia to my sunstroke. I thought I'd share a few photos, first Italy (Campania - Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum, Amalfi Coast) and second Wales. I would normally say you'd be able to spot the difference but we visited for the first time on a fabulously sunny day the curious Welsh-Italian coastal town of Portmeirion - better known to me at least as home to The Prisoner - 'I am not a number!' and all that.....

Wales...

I hope you all had a good Easter break!
