Dazed and Confused - Maggie, Jake and Heath

I'm sure most of us are still flying high after the extraordinary excitement of yesterday - Jake Gyllenhaal may be on his holidays but that won't stop us! Thanks to everyone for the enlightening discussion of Rufus Wainwright's lyrics - as a result, there are several songs that mean much more to me today than they did yesterday. And thanks to yesterday's book quiz, I feel like Frank the Rabbit is having his vengeance and taking over the site. Thanks Ruby!

Today, I want to take the opportunity to post some new pictures of Maggie looking at her stunning best which are published in the July edition of Dazed and Confused, in which 'Maggie Gyllenhaal Takes Charge'. In the interview itself, Maggie shows how she is not afraid to be independent and apart from Hollywood perceptions of what an actress should be and how she should behave. When asked about her controversial comments about 9/11 - when Maggie said that America was 'responsible in some way' for the attacks - Maggie makes no apologies. "There was a misunderstanding in the press where I was being quoted... as saying I regretted what I said. I meant what I said, it was just the wrong place to talk about something so sensitive."

Maggie, a young mother herself, is in a fortunate position, as opposed to that of Sherry Swanson, Maggie's character in SherryBaby. For an actress 'whose acting is based mainly on emotion', Maggie took the method acting approach and spent time at a halfway house in Newark where she could witness firsthand the 'hardship and devastation' of these women. "I knew that if I judged Sherry, everyone would judge her."

Maggie can also be found in the UK's Metro and other papers today talking about the experience of spending time with these women. "I don't usually do research like that but I needed it... I know that life is difficult for many people, but until I went to these places I didn't know the extent of it. I really didn't know how hard it is." And it was hard for Maggie to let go: "There was all this stored pain, Sherry's pain, in my body."

Maggie was featured in the Living Scotsman last weekend and amid her discussion of the responsibilities of portraying a woman like Sherry, Maggie touched on her working relationship with brother Jake: "People ask a lot about this and, you know, I won't work with him again on-screen, not for a long while anyway... It's important to do our own thing. I want to get away from that now." I also learnt something new about Maggie from this interview: 'Gyllenhaal doesn't shun the limelight entirely. As chameleon-like in person as she is on camera, she has, in the past, modelled sportswear for Reebok and high-fashion couture for Miu Miu, a branch of the Prada fashion house.' Of that, I had no idea.

See the Joker Take to the Streets!

The other day I mentioned that Batman and the Joker were taking to the streets of Chicago for some dramatic chases. This has reached the newsrooms of that city and now we can see Heath Ledger himself as the Joker, looking nothing like the Heath Ledger that we know and love and not a little chilling! Apparently, they're going to be filming more of the same for the next two months.

New Old Jake

While Jake enjoys some peace and quiet before the onset of the Rendition circus, some more new old pictures of Jake have appeared at IHeartJake, thanks to the wonderful Stephanie. These include some truly beautiful photos of Jake taken on 30 March 2004 at the party which followed the Museum of Modern Art's celebration of director Sofia Coppola at the Grammercy Theatre (the scene of Jake's Rufus debut!). The party itself was held at the Metronome and Jake attended with Kirsten.

Happy Cannes Memories

Recently, there have been some happy reminiscences going on at Srike Me Gyllen about Cannes and the Red Carpet experiences of myself and my two cohorts. I've already said my bit here but it brought back some very special memories to relive the expectation and unhoped for reality as expressed by one of my fellow Cannes Carpeteers. You can read about it here and also see a fabulous montage of memories by our very own Beckela!

Includes photos from IHJ.

Wow, great pics of Maggie. I love the B&W one with the short hair - she looks like a film star from another era or something. I like some I've seen of her "40's era" ultra-glam ones too! And Jake at the Museum of Modern Art celebration - too gor-juss. And you guys at Cannes - I just can't belieeeeeeeeeeeve how lucky you all were to go and to have seen Jake, and I love the pics where he saw and heard you! You all look fab! :*

Hi Marina - I couldn't believe how beautiful those pictures were when I bought the magazine at the weekend. She's stunning and so glamorous.

And her brother looks beautiful too - if you click on them the photos are huge and even that large, Jake is a stunner in very detail.

All the talk about lost love on the previous thread has made me feel a little melancholy this evening and so I'm in the mood to look at beautiful pictures of Jake.

Thanks for that about Cannes, we were very lucky and Jake was in the perfect mood! Good to think on that tonight. Sigh.

Maggie is very beautiful in those photos. She deserves to shine and I am glad she is getting more attention.

Of course brother Jake is always stunning - even in three year old pictures. Never enough Jake!

Glad the Batman coverage continues. I am so glad Heath took on this role as The Joker. Can't wait! And the added bonus of being in a film with that other Gyllenhaal.

Fantastic memories of Cannes. Thanks for sharing.

As usual,WDW, you select the best pics!

Hey Dani - I'm glad you liked the pics nd the walk down memory lane. There's also no chance of me ignoring anything to do with the Batman project - it's way too exciting!

I agree, Maggie looks fabulous. Like Marina says, she looks like a classic film star from years ago. And I admire her for speaking her mind about things, even though her "10%-ers" probably wish she wouldn't. Go Maggie!!!

And thank you for those gorgeous pics of Jake! They're definitely the perfect cure for the sadness of the previous thread:) (that's not to say I don't appreciate the more reflective posts, cos I really do. And I have to hold myself responsible for bringing the mood down too - sorry!)

Will check out the Cannes post in the morning:) Thanks for all your posts over the last couple of days:)

Hey Twisted Logic - I definitely felt the need to cheer myself up! But like you, I've been really enjoying the discussion on the other thread and I don't want it to stop so keep going everyone.

I wanted a post today about beauty in all its Gyllenhaal guises and here we have it with Maggie at her most Hollywood and Jake looking straight into our hearts. Wonderful.

And a bit of Heath too - just what the doctor ordered :D

You didn't bring the mood down, Twisted Logic, I think we moved as one ;D

OMG! These pictures are wonderul -- and so big. I can't believe Jake's eyelashes in the second one. WOW.

Maggie is stunning! She is unique, nothing like the carbon copy starlets found in Hollywood. I have a hard time telling those gals apart.

Oh, and I love the Cannes talk at SMG.

Hi Beckela - those pictures of Jake are truly beautiful and HUGE!! So much expression in those eyes of his. And definitely, Maggie is one of a kind - doesn't she look good in these pictures?!

Thanks, Beckela, for that montage you did of our Cannes Moments. I have it saved and I love it :D

As for the chi of Cannes chst! - guys it is contageous! - I perked up like a cactus in a rainstorm -
"this aint no little thing that's happenin' here"

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey pia - that's great! You've put a smile on my face :D Maggie is a wonder - why does that sound like a song to me? - and nothing can make me feel good like the thought of Cannes and that Jake laugh.

Maggie will be around for a very long time! In some ways, she has the potential to be this generation's Meryl Streep!!! I am very, very fond of her! Those pictures are just gorgeous, WDW!!! Thanks so much for sharing them.

Jake! There are no words, I said a long time ago that I thought I'd used up all my exclamation points!!! LOL!!! Jake is just ....beautiful. I can't think of a word that suits any better and even that is a poor one!

I hope Heath will do a lot more film work... more stuff like TDK! I'm very happy for Heath. Really excited to see this one!

It's three full weeks since the pictures of Jake at LAX! He's been peaceful and totally unavailable to paps and tabloid rags and cars following him and nasty invasive questions. Family and friends also virtually ignored. Although Maggie and Peter generate their own heat...can't blame Jake for that! I hope he is busy working on his reading. He'll have to sing for it! I'd give my right arm (I'm left-handed) to be able to go to that reading! Wonder if Zooey Deschanel is involved? She has an amazing singing voice.

What a treat this post is! Nothing as lovely as having a treat for breakfast. Bobbyanna is right about the way you write WDW ... you weave a whole lot of ideas and events together seamlessly and an amazing tapestry emerges. And it keeps us intrigued and captivated and reading through your words over and over. Brilliant.

As for your happy memories of Cannes I thought it was worth a recall. I've been meaning to do that feature for a long time on SMG and it all came out there impromptu that evening because the Captain of the Dreamboat decided to get on board and open up about his experience. Your team looks gorgeous in the picture. Imagine --- I did that feature on "Friday the 13th" ... shows you great and positive things can happen on such days.

That bears repeating -- repeatedly!

Although Maggie and Peter generate their own heat...

Mr Ruby bought this magazine 'for me' when he saw Maggie on the cover - although I know he has a fondness for her himself ;) Not a great magazine, but worth it for that article. Maggie is gorgeous.

She also discusses the paps in this interview. Aparently, Maggie and Peter didn't have too much trouble with paps until she fell pregnant, then they wouldn't leave her alone - they do love a 'bump' it seems. Someone even called the fire dept to say there was smoke coming from their building in order to get them outside so that they can photograph them!!

Now I don't want to start the pap debate here - I guess we all love to see pics but hate to think of harassment and invasion of privacy - but that was a step way too far for sure.

While I'm here can I just send some good vibes and big hugs to Incognita. :)

And the thought of Heath in TDK makes the geeky fan-girl in me grin big-time! He is gonna be soooo good.

Hi guys. Thanks for your comments :D

Bobbyanna - absolutely loved this!

Jake! There are no words, I said a long time ago that I thought I'd used up all my exclamation points!!! LOL!!! Jake is just ....beautiful. I can't think of a word that suits any better and even that is a poor one!

Jake is all about exclamation points!

I like what you say about Maggie being a potential Meryl Streep of the future - Maggie is sexy and beautiful but she's also got that extra something, something very unusual as well as some fire. And that will mean she can be both leading lady and character.

And that's a pleasant image - Jake is on his holidays but hopefully working on something new for him and us all. It's been great that he's had such a complete break from all the HW nonsense and the media - he should come back refreshed and smiling for Rendition.

Incognita and Beckela - Thanks very much for your kind comments :D I'm glad you like my rambling posts on bits and pieces - I do like doing them.

And thanks Incognita for the trip down memory lane :D

Hey Ruby - I know what you mean about the magazine, but it's irresistible with that cover.

It seems a sad state of affairs that an actress can carry on with life in peace on the whole much of the time until she has a baby. Then it's almost as if the paps see that as making her fair game. I remember when that fire story happened - outrageous.

I can just see that Heath Fan Girl Grin on your face! *)

I'd read about the false fire alarm some time ago, and you're right. It's despicable! I remember coming home from hospital with a new baby. On that basis alone, I'm available if Maggie wants to kick butt! (I'm 4'11", but still...)I think these kinds of horrible intrusions are what's turned the family against so much media attention. That and the meanness following BBM, for Jake. Hopefully, Jake's prolonged absense will provide a "cooling off period" and the media attention will moderate itself.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bobbyanna
As far as Jake and the media goes, I get the sense that this is the calm before the storm, and that Jake is probably aware of what it'll be like when Rendition is in full flow.

Anonymous said...

WDW, you're probably right. I've read a few things regarding Oscar buzz for Rendition! Since it is a controversial topic, I bet there's probably a lot of marketing meetings and PR strategy sessions taking place. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Gavin Hood and Jake Gyllenhaal were scheduled for an hour of Charlie Rose...our premiere Public Television roundtable host. (Often covers the intersection of art & politics!) You can catch his hour with Ang and Heath on You Tube. In any event, for some reason, I just don't picture Jake lolling around the beach at MV. I have this feeling he is really busy and focussed on several things right now. Hope one is a Broadway play!!! And another is the five or ten (!) movies he is signing on for!!! LOL!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I hope you're right Bobbyanna and Jake's taking this opportunity to fill up that work schedule :D I imagine it'll be a tough publicity schdule for Rendition as it clearly is collecting Oscar buzz as you say.

I expect that Jake is mixing business with pleasure, I also suspect not all of this time is being spent on the island. Jake knows how to keep his head down when needs be ;D

I just want to respond to some things commented by others.

First, Bobbyanna said she thought she had used up all of her exclamation points and WDW said Jake is all about exclamation points. I feel the same way. Never in all of my writing life have I used so many exclamation points and often think I am over using them. But that's the only way it can be made clear what passion Jake brings out in all of us!

And thanks to Bobbyanna for the info that there is an Ang/Heath interview on YouTube. I did not know about that. I am an admirer of Charlie Rose and hope the Rendition team pays him a visit.

Incognita, I also believe that great and positive things can happen on Friday the 13th! That was the day in January 2006 that I fell hook line and sinker for Jake while watching him on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. I had already seen BBM three times at that point and thought Jake did a magnificent job as an actor. I had never seen him do an interview at that time. I was absolutely captivated by him. It was like stardust had been sprinkled in my eyes and I have been blinded by his light ever since!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Dani - thanks for your comment! I think we have to accept there just aren't enough superlatives to describe Jake and punctuation is inadequate too - sigh.

I think you and Incognita have shown us that Jake has made Friday the 13th lucky. What wads that interview where Jake described his superstitions? Was that a Conan or Leno show?

I'm afraid I've not heard of Charlie Rose (why does that make me think of the Rolling stones?

Anonymous said...

Jake talked about his superstitions on Leno's show that night of the 13th!

Charlie Rose is making you think of Charlie Watts of The Stones.

Anonymous said...

"It was like stardust had been sprinkled in my eyes and I have been blinded by his light ever since!"

(sigh!) Thanks for that.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ahh, thanks Dani - that was driving me mad, and Charlie Watts, that'll be it :D

WDW - It's worth hunting out the Ang Lee and Heath interviews by Charlie Rose on You Tube. I think I have it in my favourites, I'll email you the link later if it's still there.

CR has an unusual interviewing style: sitting round a table, quite formal and serious, with subdued lighting. Very focussed. Think the opposite of Leno or John Stewart! :D

In most of the TV interviews I have seen, Jake is pretty playful, CR would be very different for him. Has anyone seen him do this style of interview before? I'm not sure I have.
