Jake at the polls on National Kissing Day

Apparently, today is National Kissing Day - I don't know if that's a celebratory day across the world or whether it just applies to the lucky people of the UK - but, whichever it is, I hope everyone here puckers up for the one they love - or like a lot. To mark the day, the satellite channel Sky Movies Comedy has released the results of its survey of 1000 film-goers, a survey that was designed to discover the Best Screen Kiss.

The Director of Sky Movies, Ian Lewis, commented that 'From this list, it seems that what makes a truly memorable kissing scene is an element of the unexpected or the unusual, that sticks in the memory long after most of the rest of the film might be forgotten.' This may be true of the majority of films featured on the list, but not of one in particular because, there at number 10, is the kiss between Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain.

The other kisses include the winning smooch between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity, the number 2 kiss between the Lady and the Tramp, the number 6 strange, upside down (and very unsexy in my opinion) kiss between Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in Spider-Man, and the disturbing 'kiss of death' between brothers Al Pacino and John Cazale in Godfather II. One thing I did note was that at least four of the top 10 kisses involved water.

Jake is featured in two other current polls, and these require our action. Firstly, and most immediately, Jake is featured in this week's vote for Most Attractive Man in Hello magazine. If he wins this week's vote he will then be included in the monthly vote, which, I fear, many of us will remember from last year which involved quite a tussle with Jon Bon Jovi of all people. You can only vote every 15 minutes but if you do you will help Jake fend off the likes of Prince Harry (surely too young for the poll but currently at number 2), Batman, Matthew McConaughey (surely too old for the poll but currently at number 4), our very own Heath Ledger and last and definitely least Jesse Metcalfe.

Finally, the nominations for Fox's Teen Choice Awards have been announced. To vote in this requires patience and being a teenager. However, as we are all teenagers here, this shouldn't be a problem. Incredibly, Jake has not been included in the Choice Male Hottie poll - even though Orlando Bloom, Zac Efron and somebody called 'T.I.' are. Instead, Jake is nominated in one of the other 699 categories: Choice Movie Actor: Horror/thriller. Here, Jake must compete with Josh Duhamel, Jim Carrey, Ryan Gosling and Shia LaBeouf. The results will be aired on Fox on Sunday 26 August.

So stop what you're doing and do your duty.

Are you trying to kill me early in the morning, WDW? First of all I didn't even know it was National Kissing Day. Maybe that's not every where. Doesn't matter though. Any reason to see what I feel is THE best kiss in cinema history is good enough for me. Thanks!

Now I will be off to do my voting duty for Jake!

Hi Dani - glad to hear it! It seems like the perfect occasion to celebrate this groundbreaking kiss :D

Thanks for posting this WDW! I would have hoped the kiss would've been higher, cos it was at Number 1 in another recent poll (I think it was Lovefilm) and of course it won the MTV Best Kiss Award. But Top Ten isn't bad at all for a channel like Sky so it's all good I guess:) Personally though, I have to admit my favourite kiss is the one in SNIT, it sends shivers down my spine just looking at pics of it...I'll stop now or I'll be here all night going on about it!

Thanks for the links to the polls.I'm very appreciative of the sacrifices made by the suffragettes, and I'm sure they would have wanted Jake to win, so I've voted in the Hello one.Our boy is well in front (although it's not like the competition's up to much, with the exception of the lovely Heath) but we musn't get complacent so keep voting every 15 minutes people!
The Teen Choice one does look very complicated, so I'm going to wait until I have a bit more time - and I'm in a better state to work out when I would have had to be born to qualify as a teeenager! (Actually that makes me FEEL like a teenager again but sort of in reverse).Btw, how do those of us outside the US get around the zip code thing? Can I just put in a UK postcode?

Hi Twisted Logic - I don't think no 10 is at all bad for this poll. It just means that Jack and Ennis are right up there in peoples' consciousness a year and a half on for the release of the fim. This means, to me at least, that Brokeback lives on in the imagination of more people than us Brokies. It's good news.

Jake's doing well in the Hello vote. As for the Teen Choice vote - it's a lot more complicated and I haven't been successful as yet! And you're right, as Jake would say, the maths is Awkward. Maybe just make up a code? Does anyone have a spare code to share?!

You're right, number 10 is very respectable. I guess 'm a bit too biased at times, I think Brokeback and Jake should win every award ever, whatever it's for;D
And yes,I don't want the fact that I'm neither American nor a teenager stop me voting for Jake,so if any American readers have any spare zip codes please let us know so we can vote in the Teen poll.We don't want Jake to lose on a technicality do we?;)

well, I'm way too old to navigate the Teen Choice thing, but I did vote in the Hello poll.

I actually think I may cast a few votes for Heath, 'cause I really do like him a lot (certainly more than Matt Mc), and he deserves better than the few paltry votes he has so far. Let's see.... for every 2 votes I cast for Jake, I'll vote once for Heath. I'd like to see him in 2nd place.

I guess The Teen Choice poll knows it's been a couple of decades since I was a teenager so I haven't had any luck voting there.

I am going to do like Birdie, for every two votes for Jake, I will give one to Heath because I like him and he is the other half of that great kiss.

Actually it depends on my mood as to whether reunion or second night kiss gets my vote for THE BEST. Sometimes that powerful collision of hearts, bodies and souls after four years of desperate longing practically knocks me to my knees. Especially the end when they are clinging to each other and Ennis has to pull Jack's grip from him then gives him that sweet silent promise of more to come.

Then there's second night which with its vulnerable, beautiful and complete surrender definitely makes more than my knees weak.

Hey Twisted Logic - that's funny! That Jake shouldn't suffer on account of the 'technicality' of us being neither American nor teenagers! Quite right. As Jake transcends age and political borders (not to mention oceans), he should be an exception and everyone can and should vote for him.

Birdie and Dani - I must admit that I have been tempted myself to cast the odd vote in Heath's direction because he is family, but remember you'll have to give Jake two votes for each Heath vote!

Favourite kiss in BBM... hmmmm. Mine would be the first kiss during the second night. For one thing its preceded by the most beautiful expression on Jake's face, combining love, comfort, reassurance and need, and secondly because it's the moment Ennis calms that struggle inside and gives in.

That scene you mention, Dani, during the reunion when Ennis pulls Jack off him and then nudges Jack's face - that's one of my favourite moments and that's an understatement.

I'm with you Dani, there's so much love and passion in those kisses I'm torn between which are my favorites, the reunion kiss or the SNIT kisses. In fact, one of the few on-screen kisses to rival Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster in From Here to Eternity are the Brokeback kisses. Ennis and Jack are right up there with the world's greatest onscreen lovers IMO. A kiss for all in celebration of National Kissing Day (a day late!), whether US or UK! :*

Guys, you've got me welling up here with your descriptions of the Brokeback kisses. SNIT still edges it for me,in fact that whole scene is without doubt my favourite of the whole movie. But I love the reunion kiss too (and I'm with you WDW, on that head nuzzle)
Thanks for your posts here, you've inspired me to go and watch both those scenes again now:)

Of course we all want Jake to win the HELLO magazine poll. But I hope those of us who are giving Heath a vote can at least get him past Matthew!

dani, I too am determined to see Heath beat Matt Mc in this poll. Jake looks safe in 1st place, so I have turned my energies to Heath. Matthew (no deodorant!) vs. our lovely Heath? Please, that's no contest.....

Hey Marina and Twisted Logic - I love to see all this talk here about these wonderful kisses - I think it shows how impossible it is to judge which is 'best' for both are prefect. I hope you enjoyed revisiting those scenes, Twisted Logic.

Dani and Birdie - I'm glad to see you're doing your bit for Heath. 'Matthew (no deodorant)' - love that! I just can't see the attraction. Also, that chest of his is just too smooth...

I've just checked and I see that Jake has reached over 1200 now (I'm proud to have been voter 1201!), but Heath is still struggling behind Matt McWotsit. It's a shame Heath didn't feature in a different week from Jake.
