Jake celebrates 4 July in Martha's Vineyard (probably)

A quick update for now - I'll be back later today - but I couldn't let this pass. It looks like Jake Gyllenhaal, as we probably all suspected, is in Martha's Vineyard where he may be participating, to whatever level of enthusiasm, in the whirl of MV high society. As a Brit, this whole MV social scene is a bit of a mystery and reminds me of my appreciation for Jane Austen novels.

A MV blog reports on the goings on at MV's famous July 4 party: "Just because some of these people are actors and actresses, does not mean I can't tell what they really mean - Jake Gyllenhaal, for example, who was there chilling, I can read him like a book! But, deep down inside, i think he wishes he wasn't there either, as his mother tows him around showing him off to all the people he missed seeing last summer. He's been around our circle of friends even before his 1991 role in City Slickers, we've all watched him and his sister grow into well-known and respected actors."

Please note that, if nothing else, this post allows me to revisit some of my favourite pictures from last year - September in/on/at Martha's Vineyard - courtesy of IHJ.

Strange blog, there. I hope Jake had a better time than that blogger seems to think he had. She appears a bit confused to me -- she claims everyone there is, oh, so judgmental, but not her, no siree! Yet she has all kinds of advice for MVers. And not in a nice way. Hmmmm. What is that about, I wonder?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Beckela - I know it's bizarre and I wonder if that's what it's like for the well-to-do of MV - where everyone knows each other's business, they all go to the correct social functions and just expect to have movie stars, politicians and writers etc move amongst them - but of course totally ignore them.

I know Jake grew up in that world - but does he like it? I'm sort of wishing Jake would make his escape!!

Anonymous said...

Jake doesn't want to escape anywhere, he is at home there along with his friend Chris who is also there with him. The blogger's comment about him not being too thrilled at being there is because his Mom is parading him around as she usually does, he is getting a bit old for that but doesn't know how to tell his Mom he is an adult now. Too bad he doesn't have the same "guts" as Chris, he would have definately put an end to it.

Jake loves MV, no paps and away from HW and lot's of friends.

Anonymous said...

I think that blogger just has a lot of angst, or maybe she feels left out (she IS Canadian!) and, therefore, thinks others either judge her or feel the same way she does. Who knows? If she's unhappy there, then SHE should get out. Jake could very well be quite comfortable with those people he probably has known most of his life. And they are just people. Granted they no doubt have a whole lot more money than most of us, but so do the Gyllenhaals.

Anonymous said...

Parents do tend to show off their kids no matter how old they are. My daughter is older than Jake and I'm proud as punch of her and do pretty much the same thing.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon
Thanks for commenting.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to be paraded around by their mother when they're a grown man - or woman for that matter. It just doesn't sound much fun to me - hence I'd want to escape. But if there are compensations there and he loves it, then fair enough. I can definitely see the attraction of being away from the paps.

Anonymous said...

The "parading him around" could also just be that blogger's perception. Sorry, I just find the blogger full of herself and oblivious of what's really going on. Guess that's my own perception, which could be a load of crap.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Beckela - Mothers! I have to say mine does the same and I'm a tiny bit older than Jake... ;D

Jake must feel comfortable there if he goes so often. I would have thought with his opportunities and resources he might want to see some more of the world. There are lots of places without paps. Here, for example :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

The 'chilling' seems a bit at odds with the being 'paraded around'.

Don't apologise, Beckela

Anonymous said...

Oh, I agree there are plenty of places lacking paps. I do think Jake has a few faves. But I'm certain here in Colorado, too, he'd have all the privacy he could ever need or want! LOL

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Lots of good, healthy fresh air I imagine in Colorado - but we have great shops ;D

Anonymous said...

WDW, you do make me laugh! Yes, Colorado has gorgeous mountains, lots of biking and great hiking. When Stephen G was here (in Boulder) for his film screening/poetry reading I heard him tell his publisher that he wanted to go hiking the next day. Jake would appreciate it, too, I'm sure. Wonder if Jake likes to ski!

Anonymous said...

"Tons" of biking, not tots. Sheesh!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'll have you know that the UK has more cycling lanes than anywhere else on the planet (well, maybe, I'm kind of making that up). And there's nothing more bracing than a hike up a prehistoric hill fort in horizontal rain. We have much to offer Sporty Jake! And I've not even got started on the pubs yet...

Anonymous said...

Yes, the UK's weather is certainly unique! LOL Love the pubs myself -- but Jake doesn't appear to hang out in bars much. Better scratch that! (Not that I hang out in bars much, either.)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

but Jake doesn't appear to hang out in bars much

Not that we know of but I reckon he likes a beer or two, and a glass of red (remembering those pre-Oscar pictures with Ang!) :D

Anonymous said...

quote: "but Jake doesn't appear to hang out in bars much".

Ah, but 'bars' and proper British pubs are very different environments. I can see Jake in the local village pub, in front of a roaring fire (in the winter that is) having a roast dinner and a few pints, reading the papers, then taking the dogs for a walk afterwards!

Wishful thinking on my part I think.

Nice opportunity to show us last year's 'towel pics' there WDW!! :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

So does Jake ski? That's an important question you raised Beckela that I want answering! He always strikes me as someone who loves warm sunshine.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Ruby
I should have known that you'd turn up with the first mention of pubs...

That's quite an idyllic picture you're painting there. I can imagine Jake would love that, reading the papers etc by the log fire with Atti at his feet. He'd need wellies today though...

Any way that I can get Jake in a Towel pics into a post, you can count on it.

Anonymous said...

Well, I wouldn't call Jake "gutless" for going along with his mother, even if he didn't love it. I am older than Jake and that still happens with my mom. Sometimes I say something, sometimes I go along because I love my mom and it is not the end of the world to let her be a mother. You pick and choose your battles.

However, all this info is coming from a blogger who seems to have their own issues with the party and an Anon poster here. So, I can't judge because I wasn't there. You never know how Jake was really feeling. I just hope he is having a great time in MV.

WDW, Jake has done a lot of traveling recently. So maybe he just wanted to chill with his fam and friends in a place he has said he loves. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real - Yes, I would think that's what we all want - Jake to have a good time on his summer holiday. He's certainly entitled.

As you say, we weren't there and we can have no idea. And, as I said earlier, being 'chilled' doesn't seem to tally with being uncomfortably 'paraded'. And we all know what mothers are like and I think we tend to love them for it. It would be a sad thing if the opposite were true and they hid their sons away ;D Jake is a son to be proud of.

This was only one point of view and its main function was to confirm what I think we already knew.

Oh to be on a beach myself, right now...

Anonymous said...

Hi All,

Awww, Man! This is what I miss having to work - a great discussion about our fave actor visiting Martha's Vineyard, which is about a Boston Red Sox David Ortiz homerun away from where I am! Of course I would never bother him. :)

Those pics from last year were beauties, WDW. I hope he's tolerant of his mom's pride in him, who can blame her? There's something I love about his mom, probably one reason is that she gave birth to him and Maggie, and the wonderful values his family instilled in them. :)

I hope Jake has/had a nice, restful holiday. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Marina!

You're talking another language here: a Boston Red Sox David Ortiz homerun. I take it that means you're close?

Keep those eyes open... ;D

Anonymous said...

LOL,

Sorry to lapse into localspeak, I don't know what came over me. (yes, I do!) ;)

Yes, a bit of exaggeration, but I'm fairly close to MV. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - Is that you Marina?! :D

Anonymous said...

Oops, sorry! Yes, that was me at 21:15. A certain someone just makes me lose my senses, I think! :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thought it was you! I know 'a certain someone' does the same to me!! Well, him and half a bottle of wine ;D

Anonymous said...

Hey WDW! Any excuse to show pics of Jake in a towel,eh? Thank you!!

I'm not sure what to make of the blogger, what makes her think she can "read Jake like a book"? Seems like a strange thing to say about anyone, not just Jake. And I tend to agree with most of the comments, his mum "parading him around" was probably just her being a typical proud mum and we all grin and bear when our mums get like tht. Luckily for me and my siblings, my mum now has grandkids to show off so we're not the centre of attention any more!

Oh, and the talk of Jake in England and your mention of Jane Austen, has me picturing Jake emerging soaking wet from a lake in the grounds of a huge country manor wearing tight riding breeches and a white shirt clinging to his chest, a la Colin Firth in Pride And Prejudice ;) I wish he would do a period drama!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Twisted Logic! What are you trying to do to a girl!!

picturing Jake emerging soaking wet from a lake in the grounds of a huge country manor wearing tight riding breeches and a white shirt clinging to his chest, a la Colin Firth in Pride And Prejudice ;) I wish he would do a period drama!

I am turned to mush. I'm the one who went to see Pirates of the Caribbean 3 and spent the entire movie wishing I was watching Jake in a billowing white shirt and knee high boots. Seems like I might not be the only one!! :D

And if there's one thing we do know for sure, Jake is no easy book....

Thanks (I think) for a comment that's raised my blood pressure :D

Anonymous said...

Twisted Logic! What are you trying to do to a girl!!

Says the girl who posted no fewer than four pics of Jake wearing nothing but a towel! Is it any wonder my imagination started running out of control?!
Sorry if it was a bit though. I'll try to keep my more, umm, alluring thoughts of Jake to myself in future:D
Although now you mention billowing shirts and knee high boots...

Anonymous said...

Now look, people, I just getting over the fact that Jake just might be at the Vineyard. Now, you're getting me thinking about him in a billowing white shirt, riding breeches and boots? That will just about do me in. BTW, an outfit like that is one of the sexiest things ever! Count me in, I'd love to see him in a period drama like that. :)

Anonymous said...

^That should say "a bit much". See, all these thoughts of Jake you're putting in my head made me forget to check my post before posting;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Says the girl who posted no fewer than four pics of Jake wearing nothing but a towel!

Yep, I'll grant you that, but I posted those Jake in a Towel pics for a noble purpose ;D Also, I'm very interested in towels as it happens and that colour would fit very nicely in my bathroom.

Marina's the lucky one, she's the one living within a something to do with baseball thing of MV where the said towel may be on display!!

As for alluring thoughts of Jake, Twisted Logic, spit em out. Don't keep them to yourself ;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

So where do we sign that petition to see Jake in bundles of loose fitting fabric and tight leather?

Anonymous said...

Also, I'm very interested in towels as it happens and that colour would fit very nicely in my bathroom.
Oh I see! Would that be on the floor of your bathroom, by any chance? ;)

And yes, we should start a petition straight away. Maybe if we act quickly enough we can get it sorted while Jake is still in MV and Marina can track him down and deliver it in person- just tell him it's for charity or something;D

Anonymous said...

"...picturing Jake emerging soaking wet from a lake in the grounds of a huge country manor wearing tight riding breeches and a white shirt clinging to his chest"

Damn.

Sorry, can't make a more coherent comment than that at the moment.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh I see! Would that be on the floor of your bathroom, by any chance? ;)

Might be, might not be ;D

But yes, Marina's got to step up to some serious duties on our behalf now. All you need to do, Marina, is walk along that beach with a nice-looking, friendly dog and give Jake our suggestions. Get one of those ball-throwing contraptions, they always get a conversation going.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Sorry, can't make a more coherent comment than that at the moment.

Well I reckon you've come to the right place then Ruby! My mind is going off in all sorts of directions and they're not all to do with haberdashery (er... is that the science of towels?).

Anonymous said...

And yes, we should start a petition straight away. Maybe if we act quickly enough we can get it sorted while Jake is still in MV and Marina can track him down and deliver it in person- just tell him it's for charity or something;D

I'd be an honor - it's just a ferry-ride away! I'll try not to make a total fool of myself as emissary, but I can't promise anything. I know I'll be speechless! ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Just try and act natural Marina and get a dog ;D

I think you should at least give us weather reports!

Anonymous said...

I'm sure you'll be fine Marina :) They say the trick to not being nervous in front of people is to imagine them naked, but somehow I think that would have the reverse effect if the person in question was Jake!
Seriously, I hope you do get to see him, even if you don't get to speak to him. Make sure you tell us all about it if you do! Oh, and don't forget to ask where he got his towel- for the sake of WDW's bathroom decor;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Twisted Logic I'm really not convinced this:

They say the trick to not being nervous in front of people is to imagine them naked

is good advice when it comes to Jake...

However, I do appreciate you thinking of my decor ;D

Anonymous said...

Well I always thought it was pretty crap advice anyway, but you're right, when it comes to Jake it's just beyond stupid. Particularly when some of us find it hard enough NOT to think of Jake naked at any given moment:D

On that note, it's time for me to hit the hay;) If I have any dreams of a wet-breeches-and-white-shirt-clad Jake drying himself off with a pink and yellow stripy towel, I'll know who to blame!;D

Im enjoying your site, WDW!

My view, of "the Vineyard", having summered there off and on since childhood: An island where you can
put on yr old sneakers and cut offs and fuck all, have privacy, eat harpooned swordfish, pick wild blueberries, bike from one end of the island to the other and back, and watch a re-run of Jaws in Oak Bluffs every summer to the general hilarity of all who were extras in the film.

A great mix of Portugese locals with various enclaves: wealthy Afro American community in Oak Bluffs, regulars of the Methodist campground, theatre people, writers and journalists, and well, yes, the Kennedy "upstarts", who, argueably, have done alot to keep the island pristine.

One of my favorite old timey stories: Tallulah Bankhead, upon visitng Gertrude Lawrence and her producer husband Richard Aldrich:
"you can take Martha's Vineyard and shove it up Wood's Hole. . . "

I love knowing Jake and his family are there. . . .

Wet Dark and Wild said...

G'night Twisted Logic - I'm off too. It's been great! If you have dreams like that, remember not to keep them to yourself :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Playitagain - I was just off to bed but caught your comment.

And you're a MV expert too - completely unlike the rest of us, except for Marina. And you're making me jealous - it sounds wonderful. A place where no-one cares who you are and shoes are optional. Thank you very much for some insider insight - it's the kind of place that seems hard for us to imagine but you've done a good job of giving us a glimpse and now I know I want to go! I bet there's some good food there, too. Eating swordfish while watching Jaws - I could do that...

Thanks, pia, and I'm glad you like the site!

I had pretty much thought that he was at MV for a summer holiday.

I guess I might see him a little differently than others..... to me, he is a rather traditional person as far his private life goes, and I can totally see him still feeling an emotional tie to summers on MV with family and friends like Chris. Maybe that will change when he marries and has his own family (though I doubt it). Not to mention, MV is paparazzi free....no small perk!

When I first "discovered" Jake and didn't know his background, I automatically assumed he was an East Coast boy (this may be a totally American observation)...... he so has that vibe and style IMHO. Now I am able to see the California boy in him, but he really does have a bi-coastal cultural reality going on. Just one of the many things that makes him so fascinating!

Anonymous said...

DARN! Another exciting day at WDW totally missed by me while I slaved away at work. But this was just what I needed when I came home. First, having it confirmed that our sweet Jake is where we thought he most likely was and then to hear all of the comments about Jake being "towed" or not around by his mother. I can picture Naomi doing that. She is a proud mother and rightfully so. I can see Jake being a dutiful son and gracefully accepting it.

I miss seeing him, but it is good that he is having a nice get away with family and friends in a place where he doesn't have to be on the lookout for his privacy being invaded - unless you count that blogger who used him to spice up her otherwise dull entry for the day. What she said about him chilling one minute and wishing he was out of there the next was a contradiction. I like what you said, WDW about us knowing that Jake is no easy book. That's why he remains so utterly fascinating to us.

Thanks to Playitagain for painting that lovely portrait of life on the Vineyard. I am with WDW. I want to go! It makes me think of the carefree days of my summer youth - all lazy, toasty and warm,

Speaking of warm, the heat was definitely on with that image of Jake in riding breeches moulding tightly to his muscular thighs, billowing white shirt that now and again plastered itself to the heavenly contours of his chest. And his manly stride enhanced by long black boots.....

I missed all of this. Life isn't fair sometimes!

Anonymous said...

That was a nice picture, PlayItAgain. You made me think of New England summers as a kid *sigh*, a loooong time ago! :)

It's nice that Jake had that in his life. I love that he seems so down-to-earth, too. He's part Hollywood glitz and glamour, but also has somewhat more real connections with family, and friends and places from his childhood to keep him grounded. A very nice mix! :)

Imagining him naked? That might make me even more nervous; it's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it I guess, and I'll gladly volunteer! ;)

Anonymous said...

O I guess I ought to explain Tallulah's remark, she didnt like the island culture because it was so laid back - not her style.

Anonymous said...

maybe it's because I live in the Midwest, but there's something so romantic to me (in a Fitzgerald sort of way) about summering on MV.

One of the art directors I work with has access to a friend's summer home on MV for one week in the summer. It was all I could do not to beg her to take me with her.

I agree with Marina..... it makes me happy that Jake has somewhere to escape to that helps keep him grounded and connected to family and friends.

Anonymous said...

I don't accept the description of that blogger saying Naomi tows Jake around with her. What I do think is that, first, we all know Jake is close to his family, so to spend time with them doesn't mean he has no social life or friends of his own. Another thing. If his dad is unavailable bcz he is somewhere else working, etc. maybe Jake escorted his mother to some social occasion. This is his downtime so he probably has nothing more serious to do than read (scripts!) and decide whether he wants to cycle, play tennis, or swim. It's likely that he's doing his fair share of partying, too. My 23 year old brother used to deposit mother back at home after some event, then he'd head out to meet friends and party. After all, at that hour his crowd was just getting started! LOL!!! The main thing to keep in mind is that we are reading about someone else's perception of Jake, and not necessarily what actually happens.
Thanks for posting some of my very most favorite pictures of Jake! Last year around this same time, Jake was walking along a stretch of beach at Matthew McConaughey's party....with Natalie Portman...If it really is true that he and Reese have stopped seeing each other, maybe he just wants to be with close friends and family right now away from the spotlight, the rumors, the speculation, etc. I SO want him to be happy. And I think he has a wonderful, awesome, brilliant, talented mother!I am VERY fond of her.

Anonymous said...

I do find it easy to accept, bobbyanna, he's her son and she's proud of him :)* I also think we should cut the blogger some slack for a tiny bit of cattiness and hyperbole - this is HER social circle, after all. She can't have realised one mention of Jake would attract the Jake-hordes :)

Great images and laffs on this thread, thanks guys :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning guys!

More interesting comments - and luscious mental images - to enjoy today :D

I agree with Birdie in that I tend to see Jake as a traditional kind of guy with some homegrown values and relationships that he values very highly. Jake certainly seems at home on both coasts, I tend to think of him most of all as a California boy.

Sorry you missed us earlier Dani but I'm glad we put some happy images in your head!

Thanks for the comment Bobbyanna - I agree that Jake probably manages to fit in a fair bit of partying as after all these years of summer holidays over there he must have a ton of friends there, and noone to watch or care over who he's dancing with.

Anouska - I'm going to agree with you about easing off the blogger because, as you say, a lot of it is to do with tone and the fact that it sounds like she feels like a bit of an outsider. Never pleasant.

My whole view of MV has been completely transformed by these comments - not least because of the insights of Playitagain and Marina. From thinking it a place dominated by snobbery, table place settings and social etiquette, I now think of it as a relaxed, friendly and chilled place to hang out. But like everywhere, that's probably most true if you're a local or insider, which, sadly, I am not ;D

So what are we all doing next summer?! ;D

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

I think it all boils down to the fact that Jake's close to his family, really loves his Mom and feels relaxed,at home and amongst friends in MV. I remember him saying in an interview that he planned to take the Summer off.
I just hope he has a ball with people he loves and recharges what must be some very depleted batteries.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Nadine
Agreed! I hope that those batteries will be well charged to see him through whatever lies in store for him - and us - later in the year :D

Thanks for commenting :)

Gosh, I am so behind the times.. I found bloggers post and shared it yesterday with fellow Lashers. But got no chat not even one word as of noon today:(
Little did I know what fun y'all were having.
PIA's description is my view of the Vineyard. I have some friends who do spend time there, sometimes getting a bit excited when they spot tall handsome President Clinton.
My mom all ways had me talk to her friends on the phone and in person when I was way past 26. Proud moms do that to their children...thank goodness.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass - Yes, we had a bit of fun with this last night - although I think Jake in a Towel was a big part of that...;D

Pia's description of MV was wonderful and it's good to hear that it also feels like that to you.

Thanks for commenting :D

Hi WDW...I am very late to comment..but I just wanted to say..that these pictures of Jake always remind me of how much the lovely boy resembles J.F.K. Junior...and how movie makers are missing a chance to make a movie of J.F.K. Junior's life, if they do not utilize Jake whilst he is still fairly young...as always..your site is the best!! Michele

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Michele - you're not too late - please don't let that ever deter you as I love to hear what you have to say...

You are very right, Jake does look the mirror image of JFK Jr here, it's quite uncanny sometimes. If 'they' ever were to make a biopic, Jake would surely be the obvious choice. There's so much that Jake could do...

Thanks for commenting, Michele :D

sass said...

I totally agree that Jake should portray JFK Jr in his biopic. I've posted pics of JFK Jr on Lashers, but who knows what's up with Hollywood these days.
I just read in LA Weekly, that Werner Herzog, who brought me Klaus Kinski (one of my favorite actors) wanted Christian Bale for his movie Rescue Dawn, because he is the best of his generation.
I was like: NOT! Then I thought, he is over 30, and not in Jake's generation at all:) God knows, Christian kills his body with each movie, so maybe he is the best of the over 30 bunch:)

"Islanders" like Clinton because he schmoozes with everybody while standing on line at the IGA market and pays especial attention to children.

Its not a snobby place, and even "day trippers" seem to get an "island high". you can rent mopeds, bikes, stay in a hostel, or at the family campground, fish off a bridge, hang out at the docks
when the fishing boats come in, watch the moon rise over a lagoon, etcetc.

one day I phoned the naturalist who writes a column for the Vineyard Gazette, asking him what wild flowers were protected. He replied that I could pick any damn thing I wanted, wht the hell did I think God made them for, anyway.

sorta like Jake, don't you think? what did God make him for but to gaze upon and love.

enuff of MV comments. thank you guys for responding graciously to my posts.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass
I just don't get the Christian Bale thing at all. He's never done much for me. I would say that Jake is in this generation and should be considered for these roles. I would have thought that these days Jake is in the running for many of the roles being discussed. I trust that out of all of these choices Jake will have the chance to shine. I can't wait to see what he does next!

Thanks for that, Sass :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Playitagain I can never get enough of your MV comments, that's for sure...

MV sounds like such a great place to visit or have a day out and let the world catch up with you at your own pace. You make it sound just perfect.

This is so beautiful: sorta like Jake, don't you think? what did God make him for but to gaze upon and love. Lovely.

Those are some great thoughts to see me off to bed tonight - thanks Pia :)

This blogger was not blogging about Jake, per se. She was just recapping the party from her perspective. I'm sure she didn't mean to cause all this whopla. I checked out that blog though...It's pretty cool. And when did she claim not to be judgmental, and where was the so-called advice? Did I miss something?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - Thanks for commenting.

I think when news of Jake is short and the only mention of him recently has been in a blog then a passing reference is all it takes for the Gyllenhordes to swoop. I think some people here have revisited the blog and cut it some slack and indeed the view of MV has completely changed during the course of the discussion! I think the advice you referred to came from someone else earlier in the discussion.
