Jake - I am constantly aware of the environment

A double post today because tomorrow I have a date with tens of thousands of people at Wembley Stadium, London. At the risk of being rained on for ten hours solid - although now they say the sun may shine on us after all, despite it being Ladies Day at Wimbledon - I'm going to be within telescope range of the Live Earth bonanza. A few eco-friendly movie stars are going to host parts of the event in London, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Cameron Diaz, although - alas - one particular movie star will be absent and missed.

MTV UK released a brief video in which Al Gore discusses this opportunity to fight the 'money in pollution' and there, adding his piece, is Jake Gyllenhaal. Unfortunately, I know that this video cannot be seen outside the UK. As meagre compensation, I can assure you that Jake's interview - filmed in Cannes - is fleeting, comprising only one sentence. This is what Jake said and the pictures in this post show what he looked like saying it.

"I am constantly aware of the environment, on a simple level of letting my food cool before I put it in the refrigerator, to making sure that my lights are off when I leave my house."

So if anyone here should catch any of the London Live Earth show tomorrow on TV - or if you're there yourself - I'm in about row 1,500... give or take a few score.

I'm confused- how does waiting till your food's cold before putting in the fridge help the environment? I always thought it was to stop bacteria growing and giving you food poisoning? Maybe Jake was still jet lagged and he got a bit confused, bless him. At least his heart's in the right place:)
Have a great time tomorrow WDW- I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that the weather behaves itself. And you never know, there might be a surprise appearance from a certain someone:)

You know, Twisted Logic, this fridge thing is weird and I've been thinking about this (Jake always makes me think of the oddest things...). I was always taught never to put anything warm in the fridge and I've just assumed this is to do with bugs - like your answer. So is there science in what Jake says? or is he finding a reason behind something he's always been taught as well but doesn't know why? In other words, is he making it up as he goes along? Whatever, he's gorgeous and I love that mind of his :)

Thanks for the good wishes! I'm hoping for a great day - and you never can tell :)

Hey WDW! I'm glad it's not just me who doesn't get the fridge thing. He seems a bit tired in the video, so maybe he just wasn't thinking straight. Or maybe he knows something we don't?
If you do happen to see Jake tomorrow maybe you can ask him. And the same goes for Marina if you bump into him in MV!
Or of course, Jake, if you're reading, please drop us a line and enlighten us!

Here's my energy $.02:

If you put food that's still fairly warm in the fridge, it's going to use that much more energy to cool it down. Next to air conditioning, the refrigerator uses the most electricity for home appliances. I've always heard that to stop bacteria from getting a foothold at their optimum growing conditions (room temperature), that you put your food away before it's completely cool or at least within two hours, and then I've heard just the opposite as well. What kind of food it is would make a difference and if it's a really hot day, etc. but, if you've been careful preparing and handling it, and don't let it sit out for too long, how much could really grow, I ask you? ;) I'd rather err on the side of energy conservation myself. It's the everyday things that really add up, such as turning off lights, using compact fluorescent lightbulbs, putting on a sweater on a cold day as Mother Nature intended, instead of cranking up the heat, etc. for the millions of people who use these things, as well as the big things like gas consumption of 2 mph truck and cars. :)

I hope you have a great time at the LiveEarth bonanza, WDW! Yay for Al Gore, Leo DeCaprio and Jake for making such an important issue a priority. :)

sorry, that's MPG, not MPH above! And I'd like to combine threads and say that Jake deserves a kiss :* on National Kissing Day, for being so conservation minded! Have fun WDW! :)

Thanks, Anon, for that explanation. I was sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out yet another Gyllengem of wisdom. I guess Jake does know what he's talking about. WE just have to figure it out. Never a dull moment with him. More reason to love him!

WDW,HAVE A GREAT TIME!

You're very welcome, Dani! I should thank all the celebs who bring attention to this important issue as well. Yes, the Gyllengems are endlessly fascinating, and he's definitely a gem! :)

Hey Anon - Thanks very much for that great answer. So Jake was right after all - I should never have doubted.... :D

As you show, there are lots of little ways in which we can all help out, not least of which has to be driving less. We don't all have the money to go around planting trees. We have to compensate in other ways.

I know that some people are throwing doubt on the merit of these Live Earth concerts, but it seems to me that this whole event makes good use of Al Gore's considerable influence and reputation - and the more stars that are involved (even though, as the news stations endlessly point out, these are major fliers) the better.

And Dani I love Gyllengems :D

So thanks Twsted Logic, Anon and Dani - I'm sure I'll have a great time and the sun is shining - phew!

But don't you need to get in your car to drive to Live Earth?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'm going by train - no car required.

Wembley Stadium, which is brand new of course, has been designed with public transport in mind. This makes a pleasant change - most big venues you can only reach by car.

Just jumping in to wish you a wonderful day without raining and lots of fun, WDW!
I will try to watch a bit on our TV.

And thanks for the caps...:-))
A pity that he is not more involved as a moderator for example...

Concerning Jakes refrigerator comment - that´s what they are telling us here also - to spare energy - first cooling down food and then put into the refrigerator like anon 01.15 said.

WDW! It is SO cool that you'll be there!!! I wish I could be at the US concert! I intend to watch it off and on thru out the day. Have already been watching Shakira perform in Germany and the packed stadium in the UK.

Trains are not enviromentally friendly either - and not everyone will be going by train. Madonna is flying there by private jet. This concert will be wasting 500 times more energy than the average person uses in a year.

Some of the stage lighting alone is equal to lighting 1,000 homes.

Any kind of mass transportation is a lot more environmentally friendly than individually driving in a car, I feel - full flights and trains. The point of the concert is to raise awareness of the issue; there's no way that we can turn back global warming now I'm afraid, but we can certainly make improvements, stop it from getting worse, and just be more aware of our effect on the planet and other beings we share it with. Energy is only one aspect; turning back the tide of human overpopulation is a bigger one - which is the main, major contributor.

Thanks Anon, for explaining about the fridge thing:) Shame on me for doubting Jake!

WDW - hope you had a great day. At least the weather was good! I watched some of it on TV - Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters were good! I hope you'll be posting an account of your day on here, even though it's not strictly Jake related. I'm sure you can find a way to work him into it somehow;)

TwistedLogic, you're very welcome and thanks so much! I didn't want to come off sounding like a know-it-all, but I do enjoy these discussions.

As far as saving energy, just imagine wrapping up in Jake's grey cardie instead of cranking up the heat, with or without him in it! ;)

"As far as saving energy, just imagine wrapping up in Jake's grey cardie instead of cranking up the heat, with or without him in it! ;)"

Wow..... that image of wrapping myself up in that lovely grey (cashmere?) grandpa cardigan made my body heat index sky rocket. Does that count as contributing to global warming? :D

Seriously, I hope the Live Earth shows inspire all of us to do MORE to diminsh the damage we are doing to our planet.

I think the majority of us are aware of the issue of global warming - no need for a concert. If people didn't care before the concert, I don't see how Madonna and co. is going to make them feel any different.

Fact is, they contributed to global warming right there, right then, which to me seems absurb.

They should have called it 'Live Hypocrisy'.

The manager of Wembley stadium admitted they could only recycle one third of the litter produced by the concert. The rest would have to go straight to landfills. Can you tell me how that helps?

Hi Guys! I'm back and in one piece - having survived the ordeal of London's mass transportation system!!

I'm absolutely delighted to see that discussions have been going on here about the merits - or otherwise - of the Live Earth concert events. Debate such as this is one of the most positive repercussions of any big 'good cause' event. And I think we all agree here that the cause is good but some may doubt the benefit of a concert, which in many ways is as 'non-green' as can be.

However, having been a part of it for several hours, I can tell you my feelings are decidedly more mixed than they were before. But more of that in my next post which - as you say Twisted Logic - I'll work Jake into somehow!

But on a purely concert level - it rocked!! Sorry to sound like an escapee from the 1970s but that's the only way to describe it. And the state of my eardrums today are testament to the enjoyment I received from - above all - Snow Patrol, Razorlight, Keane, Kasabian and Paolo Nutini. These bands FILL a stadium. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - hmmm, I think maybe they were having a bad day.

I got the impression that Duran Duran think they can personally save the world because they have a song called Planet Earth and Simon le Bon must have woken up thinking he was Bono. Focus on the singing boys! And don't get me started on Geri Haliwell...

BUT - this site is all about our own favourite global warmer Jake G and yes Anon 1:21 and Birdie who needs heating when you have Jake in cashmere (or in anything for that matter). Jake is an environmentally friendly fuel source all by himself!

Thanks as well to Bobbyanna, Carla and all of you for the good wishes and I hope you enjoyed the show (without the added bonus of having to line up for 45 minutes for the ladies). And thanks for all the comments, whether they were for or against the concerts - I appreciate the debate.
