I had a Brokeback moment today - I was listening to my MP3 player on random and on came Wings from Brokeback's perfect soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla. It had been a while since I last heard it and it was as fresh and as moving as the first time it flooded over me.
So I'm using that as an excuse to revisit another old interview with Jake Gyllenhaal from this special period. In December 2005, Jake stared out with stunning blue eyes from the cover of Bent magazine. Inside, Jake focused on his working relationship with Heath Ledger and reflected on how 'emotionally tied' he had become to Jack Twist. "The way Ang described Jack, and the way it's been written, is he's more open to his emotions - and to a relationship. Ennis is more withdrawn. Jack, to me, tries really hard to hold on to the one thing that he knows is real in his life - his love for Ennis. Somewhere in him he has enough courage to say, 'let's try this. Let's take this risk, but I need you to take it with me. I can't do it alone.' There comes a time, I think, in every relationship, where you have to say, 'Are you gonna make this sacrifice or not? And if you're not, then I'm gonna find somebody else who is maybe more willing.' "
As for Jake's intimate scenes with Heath: "Heath and I trusted each other enough to take risks. It was wonderful creating an intimacy with him. He made me feel comfortable; he made me want to be present, and that's the best thing you can ask for from someone you're acting with... The question of identity, whether it's sexual or whatever, is what makes this movie so powerful. My own struggle with who I am, and who I am to other people, is hopefully interlaced with this character."
Along the way in this interview, we also learn that, in addition to learning 'how to do the cowboy things', Jake spent time with a voice coach, learning how to age and deepen his voice in three stages throughout the film. But finally: " What really tears me apart is, Ennis and Jack are two people who actually found love. If you have love, you should hold on to it."
I have so many bits and piecs of 'Jake things', and a recent addition is this peculiar picture of the Jack and Ennis doppelgangers. I can't remember which magazine it came from (Heat I think), unfortunately, and I don't know if they come with extra shirts. Those are some fine curls on Ennis' head....
Includes pictures from IHJ.

Hey WDW...another fine offering about Jakey. I had never seen/read the article in Bent magazine. As a matter of fact, I have never even heard of the magazine!! BUT..anyway I love the interviews where Jake talks about how he approached the role of Jack..and how sensitive he was to Heath and how he and Heath developed a trust over the days of filming. As I think back on his performance, I see that he truly became Jack...he really felt this role..and that is what made his performance so special and engaging...thanks so much for the beautiful pics...the one of Jack and Ennis by the campfire still bugs me...because it was left out of the film...it would have been nice to have seen the deleted scenes on the newest Brokeback DVD, but, for some reason..that did not happen...Michele
Hi Michele - I'm glad you liked it. As always, I worry about going on about BBM too much but I just don't want to let it go and Jake seems at his most revealing (at least up until Cannes) when talking about Jack Twist.
I know - it's frustrating because we've seen all these extra pics, we know there were additional scenes but noone's seen fit to grace us with them. It's such a shame and I think the BBM fanbase deserved better.
Thanks for commenting, Michele :D
Hey WdW! Please don't worry about going on about BBM too much, I love your Brokeback posts :) I could go on and on about Brokeback too, in fact I have been doing since I first saw it and I've kinda accepted there's no cure for it:)
Thank you for posting this. I think I remember reading it before but it's nice to re-discover these things. I love it when Jake talks Brokeback, he speaks so movingly about Jack. When he says "What really tears me apart is, Ennis and Jack are two people who actually found love" that totally sums up how so many fans feel, and for Jake to use the words "what really tears me apart" (when you'd expext him, as an actor,to be a bit more detached from the character than a fan would be) shows how much he was touched by the character and by the story.
Is it any wonder so many of us fell in love with both Jack and Jake watching that film?
The cover pic is amazing btw! That's probably my favourite Jake look- his hair and stubble is just perfect, and as for his eyes...He could talk me into anything with just one look *sigh*
Thanks for a great post WDW :)
Forgot to say:those Jack and Ennis dolls are so cute- where can I get a pair?!:D
I have to agree with Twistedlogic in telling you not to worry about going on about Brokeback. You already know how I feel, but it's more than just wanting to know all there is to know about the movie. It's these wonderful and delightful articles that you share with us that allows us to see deeper into the man. Any topic that gives us that can't be done too much. I don't know how anyone that calls themselves a true fan could get tired of peeling the layers away from Jake. I don't know exactly what you were thinking when you titled this blog JAKE GYLLENHAAL - OUT THERE, but the more treasures you unearth about this remarkable human being makes me appreciate how "out there" he is with his emotions. He tells us so much about who he is, yet what mysteries still lie beneath makes us only want to know him more!
Twisted Logic and Dani - Your comments have meant a lot to me this evening - even more than usual - because it gave me reassurance about posting about BBM. There's so much I want to say about it and it's good to know you want to talk about it with me. So, encouraged, I'll continue.
Twisted Logic - That's very interesting when you say that you would imagine Jake to feel detached. Zodiac to me, although I cannot get enough of that film, seemed to be as a bit of a clinical experiment for Jake. He put everything into it, as he does with every role, but he was treating it as part of a process. He made Robert Graysmith his own, but it was nothing like Swoff and, most especially, Jack Twist. You would expect actors to maintain some kind of detachment as you say, but Jake never had it with Jack Twist, not before, during or since. It seemed to connect with something that was integral to his own life-changing experiences. Jake longed for Jack to find happiness in his love, as do we all, and, therefore, he's with us in the Brokeback experience.
Dani - You've wondered here about why this site is called Jake Gyllenhaal - Out There. Your interpretation isn't one I'd thought of and I love it and it rings true with my intentions, so I'll hold on to that. Here's my reason: Jake is extraordinary, he belongs to another place, BUT he reaches out to, and connects with, us all by means of his genius on the screen and - as you say, Dani - with his emotions. He's extraordinary, he's real but he's out there, leaving clues, waiting for us all to discover what he has to offer.
Thanks very much for your comments and forgive my long answer.
And Twisted Logic, that's a beautiful stare, isn't it?!
How could I have forgotten to say that the magazine cover photo is beyond beautiful! Thanks, WDW.
WDW, I guess I was writing my additional thoughts about the photo at the same time you were answering our previous comments. Thank you so much for that lovely explanation of who and what Jake means to you. It's all of those qualities that motivates you daily to represent Jake with the utmost respect. And I am glad you are confident now in knowing you can't say enough about Brokeback for most of us. If it leads us to the heart and soul of Jake, I say bring it on.
The things you noted about how Jake may have approached the characters of Robert Graysmith, Tony Swofford and the amazing Jack Twist is exactly how I feel. You just said it better!
Hi WDW,
Don't ever worry about posting information about Brokeback - it's one of my favorite movies and I love hearing about it, and can never tire of it. There's no such thing as too much info as far as Brokeback is concerned, and Jake's thoughts and feelings about the role of Jack Twist. I love the magazine cover too, but that picture with Ang Lee, that intense look on Jake's face, is especially beautiful. It's one of the qualities I admire most about him, his intensity. The movie and the character of Jack Twist left a made a lasting impression on me. :)
Dani Something tells me we all feel the same way!
Hi Marina - that photo of Jake and Ang that you mention is one of my absolute favourites. In it, Jake has complete control of that movie star presence (particularly evident at the Baftas in 2007) and, yes, the intensity is incredible.
I, too, never tire of reading, talking, thinking about Brokeback Mountain. And the music! Takes me right back to that mountain. There are times I wish I could let it -- and Jake -- go, but that passes quickly. Thanks, WDW, once again for a wonderful post.
Hi Beckela - I think it's best to give in to it and enjoy its blessings :D I do love the music - am I the only one to have the crazy remix CD??
Hi WDW

Hey Cass Thanks so much for your comment. I'm very pleased to meet a fellow Brit Jaker!
Thanks for affirming that was from Heat. I thought it was but I flicked through a big pile of mags that day and they all became muddled in my mind.
I'm glad you like the site and I'll look forward to seeing you again :D
