MyKindaPlace has announced the results of its vote to discover The MKP 100 Sexiest Lads in the World in 2006. There are many sexy lads here from both sides of the pond, including old favourites Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, David Beckham, Reality TV winners and losers and Boy Band members. But there at Number One, just ahead of previous co-stars Jared Leto and Heath Ledger, is our Jake!
But what is a 'lad' exactly? To some this may seem to be just a youngster - and there are some here who are old enough to be Jake's father - or it could suggest a man with a twinkle in his eye. It could also mean a youth who drinks a lot in the street. However, whatever the connotations, MKP say that Jake won because he is the perfect movie star and that he has a long future ahead (with the proviso that he continues to look this hot). They also say that it was a walk over. Glad to hear it and whatever the title awarded it's good to see Jake at the top of a poll and a British (I think) poll at that. Well-spotted at IHeartJake!
Talking of the World's Sexiest Lad - there has been another sighting. Today's New York Post revealed that Jake Gyllenhaal has been spotted 'sitting in his mother's porch' at Martha's Vineyard. It sounds to me like Jake is having a wonderful, relaxing summer holiday, completely oblivious to his new title. I wonder what he's sitting there reading?

The sighting doesn't mention anything about reading, he was just spotted sitting on a porch. And dear God, I wish you so-called fans would leave him the hell alone. He deserves some privacy. Posting every sighting and speculating where he is every minute like your head will explode if you don't know where he is 24/7 is unhealthy and needs to stop, enough already. So much fro "respecting" him and his work.

WDW, when I first read the results of the poll I was unsure whether it was a british side or american, but then I saw the names Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard ...:-))

It does amaze me how the Brits appreciated Jake way before Americans -- or anyone else, actually. I must admit I was oblivious before Brokeback Mountain, but I have certainly made up for lost time! I'm convinced it isn't just his "hotness" that is appealing to so many -- there is so much more to him than his looks, unlike many of his contemporaries. Oh, right, you knew that! :-)

I think someone is lost too, sounds like someone looking to bring trouble to a peaceful, supportive and non-gossip oriented site. A lot of us are happy to have found WDW and other such fan-oriented sites for that very reason, I know I am. I'd delete and ignore.

Hi Beckela - I think part of the Brit fondness for Jake must go back to DDarko - we love this film and for many it's the first introduction and then this was sealed by BBM. Mind you, I did love TDAT's Sam...But with BBM we all learnt, Brits and Americans, that there was far more to this handsome actor.

Oh, yes, I'm certain Donnie was the beginning. I had never heard of it until after BBM. I'm sure it didn't play in Denver when it was first released. Now, of course, I love it. It probably didn't hurt that Jake did This Is Our Youth in the West End, either. That was very brave of him, methinks -- a young American actor making his professional stage debut in London! Wow. And to rave reviews and a prestigious award.

Hey everyone!! I just have to add my Two Rupees' worth to the comments here.
First I have never understood why, given a totally free and expansive medium like the internet, people can't start their own blog/site/forum for airing their views. IMO, popping up out of nowhere just to say something negative and create bad vibes in an environment, be it a blog or a forum or some place in RL, is what I find unhealthy. And if the poster is so convinced about what they feel I wonder they have to do it under cover of anonymity. Why don't they stand up and identify themselves as the proud protector of Jake and his privacy???
"Physician, heal thyself! " is all I have to say. Yes Beckela and WDW, there are more "lost" souls on heaven and earth ....... ok I'll quit misquoting The Bard now. The typing finger rants(oops I'm doing it again to another Bard) and having ranted, moves on to type some pleasant thoughts and spread positive vibes.
WDW I can tell you that this place always reminds me of my own country's motto "Unity in Diversity". The respect that the posters here show for one another's varied opinions is one of the things that keeps people coming here. I think the cream of Jake's unique fan base is represented here and we don't all agree with one another on everything. It would be a bore if we did. But we all feel free to express ourselves and know that we will be respected.

I just would like to add my thoughts regarding the snarky anonymous post castigating this site for abusing poor Jake.
Maybe I am particularly dense, but how exactly did WDW's innocent reference to an already published sighting (in a NYC paper, for God's sake!) infringe on Jake's privacy? Nothing private, or personal was revealed...... we already knew he was on holiday in MV. And I'm pretty sure that this post is not going to result in a swarm of crazed women rushing to MV to track him down.
I just do not understand the motivation/agenda of these kind of posters. And I agree with Incognita.... why don't these people start their own blog and rant to like minded "fans"?
And lastly, WDW, thank you for using your good judgment in deleting this person's additional posts. Life is short, and I for one don't need any more crap. I love the vibe here, and the quality of all the posts is one of the things that keeps me coming back. I think it's no accident that Jake inspires this kind of intelligent, articulate and respectful discussion among his fans.
Incognita and Birdie, thanks so much for saying with grace and eloquence what it means to be a part of the WDW family. If the intention of that sour hearted anonymous poster was to disturb the peace and tranquility that abounds here, then they will be sadly disappointed. The good vibes, the mutual respect and the love for Jake is far too strong to be cracked by the negativity of an unhappy person.

I deal with crap all day at work. When I come home it's all about indulging for a few minutes in another wonderful post by WDW, learning something new indirectly through Jake - love how WDW linked the LIVE EARTH concert with everyone's real concerns about our enviroment to the message Jake hoped was conveyed in TDAT. And basically just to revel in the man who is increasingly amazing and well deserving of our devotion!

And, as Incognita says, we all have different opinions and points of view and each is welcomed, enjoyed and respected. Anon 1.00 - sorry you nearly missed the SherryBaby post. My problem is that when I get a thought in my head it means another post. I do try and limit them to one a day. Subconsciously I must have been in withdrawal as I missed a day for the concert. However, there will be more on SherryBaby - and I welcome all reviews/opinions. This film is definitely out of my comfort zone and I'm going to need your help.

I'm so glad you enjoy the vibe here, Dani and Birdie. So do I. We all have to deal with enough rubbish that it feels wonderful to relax here and listen to what everyone has to say. I see Jake and his films in so many different ways after listening to you all.

Ok, I'm showing up again when pubs are mentioned! It's a coincidence, honest. One thing I like about this blog is that WDW takes the time and thought to respond to every comment. It helps make us Jake fans feel very welcome. And here there are definitely genuine fans.
I love the pub idea! I do hope some day we can actually do that. I, too, love the ambiance here and the diverse views.
WDW, Sherrybaby is way outta my comfort zone, too -- it is very difficult to watch. But Maggie's performance is so magnificent you simply must watch it, if only once. I think it is a sneak peak at what is to come from her.

You really should. I found it very moving and engaging. Maggie's character undergoes a transformation in a surprising and empowering way, I thought.
This is one film, Ruby tha I really want to see. I've heard nothing but good about it.

As for Secretary I think I would be out of my comfort zone with it. I've seen Maggie in Mona Lisa Smile and World Trade Center. But SherryBaby surpassed everything. It is a painful film to watch but I sat through it because it was so gripping. I was initially reluctant and it actually sat in my player for some days before I got down to it. It made me think and it made me realize just how deep Maggie must have gone into that character to bring her to life the way she did. And it is interesting to read in the interview you have linked to, that her mother drew her attention to the script.
And it feels kind of odd that I've seen it before a lot of people have when I'm usually the last.
Secretary is unique -- great take on it, Ruby. That was my first Maggie film (after Donnie Darko) and I was amazed. I also like James Spader.

Hey Beckela - I like James Spader too. Everything I've heard about the filming of Secretary - including Spader's strange behaviour on set to Maggie - seems so disturbing. She must have been so brave on a lot of levels to do that film.

I think you are right. Jake is such a uniquely beautiful and exceptional individual that his qualities defy any kind of slotting or evaluation through such polls. But at the same time Jake is such a "fun" person that we fans enjoy bonding over such "useless" but also really harmless activity. Perhaps that would be one more reason some people would have a thing or two against the WDW folks, but heck! who cares!
And yes, it is wonderful that WDW interacts with each one of us and makes us feel our opinions are valued. That makes us all feel we belong.
Incognita - Maybe something being out of our usual comfort zone is a good reason to watch it? I would argue that that can help us grow. (Not always of course, there are things I won't watch if I think they are too violent). I know people who haven't watched BBM due to 'comfort' reasons and I think it's a damn shame!

Yes Ruby! We have to remember Gyllendaddy's advice to "disturb the comfortable". Secretary isn't available here but when I get a chance I will certainly see it. I'm particularly interested in seeing it because of Maggie's own take that it could have turned into a very different kind of film. I recall an interview with Naomi where she mentioned that she had expressed her concerns to her daughter about how the movie could potentially do a disservice and Maggie convinced her about how Lee actually found empowerment through what happened. Wish I had the link.
And yes it is a real shame what people are missing out on by avoiding BBM.

Incognita - I agree absolutely with what you say about the use of these polls. Their primary purpose to my mind is exactly what you say - they're for the fans, not for Jake's benefit. Also, I suppose we all like the element of competition with the fans of other lesser mortals.
And Ruby - you're quite right. There are reasons to venture outside your comfort zone, just as Jake and Maggie do when they make some of these films. I can't imagine it having been that easy for any member of the family to have seen Maggie in Secretary. I read once where Jake said that he'd held a private family screening for BBM and it was an emotional experience for everyone - blimey - as I can imagine.

Just wanted to chime in to say that I love our atmosphere here too. As far as polls and things go, I agree they are harmless fan enjoyment, and discussing where Jake may be is harmless too. We are not literally surveilling his every move, and mapping out his whereabouts with pushpins! There are good feelings and wishes behind our comments, it is plain to see. We don't lose sight that he's a person, and an individual. I got a nice, peaceful feeling when I read this thread, thinking of someone I admire enjoying a vacation. That's all I need to know. It's when fan attention goes into privacy invasion I feel that it becomes questionable.
Anyway, I looooooved The Guardian article with Maggie! I'm not as familiar with her work as I have become with Jake's since I saw him in BBM, and I really would like to see SherryBaby. I look forward to discussing everyone's thoughts and impressions about it if you would all like to! I haven't seen The Secretary, and I've always found James Spader to be an interesting actor. I'm a huge movie buff, and discussing a film over a glass of wine afterwards is one of my favorite things to do, even if it's a virtual glass in this case! I thought it was so amazing that her mother read the script and told her about it; I think Naomi is the coolest. The whole family, really. I haven't read Claptrap yet, but having read some of Mr. G's poetry on SMG, especially a second time, I really felt the meaning. I like to read something or see a film more than once if it really gets to me, to make sure I "get" all of what is being said.

Oh Incognita - Thanks for quoting that. That is one of my all time favourite interviews with Jake. I find it extraordinarily touching, and really unusual and wonderful for such a young man. Ansolutely wonderful to re-read that one.
Hi Marina - I'm loving the image of us all piled round a strategic map table with little models on it that we push around to show where Jake is! I completely agree - it's just good thinking Jake's having a relaxing holiday.
I like the idea of us sitting around and discussing a movie - like a film club. This means we have to get a copy of SherryBaby sent out to Incognita! I'll have to put some posts up which call for us all to have a discussion about something, so if anyone has any ideas. I've been advised I need to watch Secretary before SherryBaby so that might be a good subject. I also want to do some research on what that film meant to Maggie.
This reaction of the Gyllenparents to their childrens' work is very interesting. It also reminds me how unusual it is for a whole family to be involved like this in one area of business.

I was kind of preoccupied and couldn't join the MV thread but I caught up with it later and learnt a lot from reading it.
There is a very interesting interview with Maggie in the new issue of Psychologies magazine (August - British Edition). She doesn’t talk about Jake because she says the best part of their relationship is private.

I just want to add my voice and say how much I love this blog too. I love that we can have serious conversations about Jake and his work (Brokeback especially) or about other subjects relating to whatever the post(s) of the day is/are about. You're all obviously a bunch of very intelligent and articulate people and I've gained some very interisting insights from reading your posts. And I also like that we can have a bit of light-hearted banter too.This blog is a bit like Forest Gump's box of chocolates:you never know what you're gonna get! But it's all good. There's a perfect balance here which I really love. Keep up the good work WDW- and all of you who post here.

I would definitely recommend Secretary to anyone who hasn't seen it. I wasn't sure it was my cup of tea either, cos the whole S&M thing is just not me at all. But just as Brokeback is more than "the gay cowboy movie" Secretary is more than "the S&M movie". I did find some of it difficult to watch,but it's very thought provoking and there's a tenderness to the characters which is very moving. As Maggie says, in the wrong hands it could have turned out very wrong, but I think it was definitely in the RIGHT hands.

Somehow, I doubt that, Jake; I'm not surprised that they were just as moved by the story of Jack and Ennis as the rest of us were! It's a remarkable, stunning film.
