Zodiac Special Edition DVD - What we can look forward to in 2008

A few days ago we were reflecting on the disappointment that the Zodiac DVD we're to get on 24 July is the very definition of 'no frills'. Worse even - the DVD contains a preview of the Special Edition version we all want but have to wait until 2008 to get. Thanks to a good friend who uncovered some information about why this might be and sent me off to see what I could find.

David Fincher has been blamed for the staggered release, but the producer of the DVD, David Prior (who also produced the DVD package for Fincher's Panic Room), has refused to let Fincher take the blame and insists it is his fault because he couldn't finish the extras in time for the July date, on which, apparently, the studio would not budge. Prior also informs us that, if you want the theatrical release, then this July edition is the only version of it you'll find. The Special Edition will contain a new, extended director's cut. Therefore, as with Donnie Darko, the films on both DVDs will not be the same.

Here, in David Prior's words, is what happened: "Before you all get too bent out of shape about the staggered release dates of the vanilla and the director's cut, you should be aware that it was only reluctantly agreed to by Fincher because I needed more time on the bonus material. The studio was locked into their release date (and bound and determined to release a single-disc, which nobody except them wanted), so Fincher allowed that to be released first. It had nothing to do with Fincher "double dipping his own movie before it even makes it to stores" and everything to do with buying more time for the special edition."

This is what David Prior said on one forum: "It's accurate to say that nobody outside the studio wanted two releases, but that was a foregone conclusion a while ago. It's true that Fincher did not want the two releases to be staggered -- nobody did, in fact. However the studio would not or could not change the release date, so Fincher agreed to stagger the releases to allow more time for the special edition material. Simple as that." In another post on the same site: "Nobody wants fans feeling like they're being taken advantage of, and I know that double-dipping creates that impression. That's why it was so important to me that consumers be told there was another version coming. In this case it really was a rock-and-a-hard place situation, and delaying the second release was done strictly for the benefit of the final product... But this is a very ambitious project, easily the most far-reaching I've ever worked on, and owing largely to studio snafus that I can't really elaborate on, I didn't have enough time to do it properly. Thus Fincher bought me the extra time by agreeing to a staggered release, which I'm very grateful for."

The DVD Lounge speculates that this Special Edition will be released in time for the Oscar season - one would think this means new year. The site also tells us what we might expect from this 2-disc edition: "Commentary by David Fincher, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr., screenwriter James Vanderbilt, producer Brad Fischer, and special guest James Ellroy (L.A. Confidential); An in-depth examination of the Zodiac's actual crimes. Including all-new interviews with the original investigators, survivors and informants; Extensive behind-the-scenes supplements covering nearly every aspect of the creation of David Fincher's landmark film."

Thanks, WDW -- quite interesting and I hope it is true for Fincher's sake. I would love to know why the studio was "locked in" to the July release date. Doesn't make sense to me, but what do I know? I am very curious, also, to know what "the director's cut" will expand upon. I kinda thought the theatrical release WAS the director's cut, which Fincher took forever to finish. Again, what do I know?

Hi Beckela - I found all this interesting because it gives me a sense of what it's like behind the scenes and that even the mighty director has his hands tied at times.

I am definitely intrigued to know what additional scenes there are - as long as they all include Jake of course ;D

I'm also glad this version won't have the same ghastly cover :D

This is about the Flop and Top poll; is there a German-speaking person who can tell us

A) Do votes that are entered immediately one-after-the-other all get counted, or is their a fixed time one must wait between votes? I mean I'm happy to click my mouse button for a few minutes at at time, but I think it would be nice to know if all my votes will count, or will just the first one count?

From your post on this subject WDW, I take it that nobody knows when the poll closes? I hate that, I've been voting on the "Sexiest Man on the Planet" poll at so.feminine.uk for the past three months, can't tell when that freakin' poll is ever gonna close..... sheesh!!! The scores are:

Johnny Depp 40%
Brad Pitt 12%
Jakey 11%
Jude Law 6%

D'you think there's a chance Jakey could could catch up to Johnny Depp?? hahahaha

How exciting, TY.

It's amazing how each member of the creative team is controlled by the money people. Oh well, Two Zodiacs. Jake's commentary is a much have...ithink. decisions decisions...:)

Hi Welliwont - I've given up on this poll as it looks like it'll last forever and it's getting in the way of more enjoyable Jakin! :D

Hey Happy Sass - It IS exciting and I just can't wait to see this Special Edition, especially now we've had a glimpse of the sweat and tears going into it. It's right that it should be perfect before released. But I can't wait til 2008 so I've already ordered the barebones edition which will tide me over.

I'm glad you're happy !

Funny how the studio is 'locked in' to the release date of the DVD. They weren't so concerned about the theatrical release date of the movie!

Good point Ruby! I'd not thought of that. They didn't seem the least bit bothered by that.

Welliwont, I am german and I can tell you that the voting on VF is useless.....because it is ongoing and there won´t be a winner. You have to vote every day to put your favourite on top and IMO we have more exiting things going on - waiting for the ZODIAC DVD, Jakes new reading on Braodway next month and Jakes and "Renditions" presence in Toronto.

Unfortunatly I don´t own a Multi player DVD so I have to wait until the barebones edition will be released over here or in the UK.

The Special edition will be great and I am more than exited to hear Jake commentary and I want to see all the deleted scenes. Not one second during the film I had the feeling that it was too long.

It is such a shame what the studio did with the release date - when you read some of the blogs and Oscar related sides ZODIAC is always mentioned as one of the best movies in 2007 so far. Some people are hoping that Paramount will do a limited release again during award season to create some buzz- but I have lost faith in them....

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Carla - Thanks for your comment and I entirely agree with you. I became so frustrated with that poll last night that I'm not going to bother with it again. As you say, there's so much else going on.

I'm looking forward to seeing an extended version of Zodiac too - it's a masterpiece and a work of art and I'm intrigued to see what was left out. And I want to discover as much as possible about the filming process. As for Jake's commentary - can't wait for that!

It is a true shame if Paramount has harmed Zodiac's chances for an Oscar beyond repair. As you say, you rarely find anything but good said about Zodiac. It deserved better.

welliwont said...

Hi and thanks for the answer Carla and WDW, I'm not going to bother either, but just to let you know, Jake went from 3rd place two hours ago, to 1st place as I type!! Wooo woooo!!! Well, back to playing with my Jakey photos, ta ta.....

Well, I guess this makes sense. I'm glad David Fincher isn't getting the blame again! That was a great pre-release review from IGN.com (on an earlier thread) that you provided for us, WDW. I have yet to read a bad review of this movie. I had to smile at this:

There aren't a lot of directors today whose movies I'd see even if the plot revolved around paint drying, but David Fincher is one of them.

I totally agree!

The 2008 Special Edition of Zodiac does seem to be really worth having, a lot of interesting things to be included. I'm curious about the deleted footage too, and of course the commentary, especially Jake's! But . . . I don't know if I can wait for it! I may have to get the bare bones edition. It really is an exceptional film.

I think Brokeback Mountain will always be my favorite Jake film (so far); I can't imagine any other film affecting me as much. So much love, joy, sadness, tragedy. I have two copies of that, the original version and the Collector's Edition with those beautiful postcards. I loved Zodiac and I'm sure Rendition will affect me too, but these films are different. Who knows what other wonderful roles he will bring to us? :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Marina - It is wonderful thiking what future delights are in store :D I loved BBM - that struck me in a way no other movie may ever do again - but I can't get enough of Jake's acting and so I found myself absolutely hooked on Zodiac - I thought the whole experience was mesmerising. So for me, I'll get both the barebones theatrical release and the biggle of 2008. I suspect that whatever happens with Rendition I'll buy whatever's going because I think that could be something extra special - even from Jake.

Thanks for your new comment on the restaurant thread, by the way, Marina. That set me off again there :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Welliwont - it's a mystery and I've been told that all the Jackson fans have disappeared as well. Definitely sounds a better idea to look at Jake pics :D

I totally agree Ruby, that's exactly what I thought.Doesn't make sense, does it?
Something else I don't understand is,if the original is only going to be available on the first release, then if the extras HAD been ready on time, would they have released the two different versions at the same time? Sounds like they were always planning to release two versions anyway, so whoever's "fault" it is, we were always going to be ripped off regardless. On the plus side (for me anyway) there wouldn't be any point me getting the first one when it comes out in the US cos I only have a region 2 player, so it gives me the chance to ask Santa for a multiregion one in time for the bonus edition. It should be worth the wait anyway, just for Jake's commentary:) I'm not sure I particularly want to see "An in-depth examination of the Zodiac's actual crimes" though!!

That's a great quote, Marina. I don't really know that much about David Fincher (I loved Se7en though) but if you substitute "directors" for "actors" and "David Fincher" for "Jake Gyllenhaal" that would just about sum me up!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Twisted Logic - I definitely think you should ask Santa for that multiregional DVD player (at the same time I'll be asking for a Nintendo Wii - oops, off topic :D ). I could never have lasted the wait for the BBM release on DVD even though it was just a few weeks.

The commentary is what I want most of all, without doubt. Jake's commentaries are priceless. What wouldn't I have given for a Jake, Heath and Ang BBM commentary.

Anonymous said...

Thanks TwistedLogic. I saw Se7en which I thought was great, I didn't see Fight Club because it just didn't appeal to me for whatever reason, but Zodiac was incredible! I am now a David Fincher convert. And as far as Jake goes, yes, I'd see him in anything. After what I saw him do in Brokeback, and all of other his movies, he's a great actor, and gorgeous too. Talented, and he makes the so-called "conventionally" handsome actors just fade away IMO. I think he's one of the most handsome men I've ever seen, not to mention one of the most talented actors. I even loved Bubble Boy, and I couldn't have imagined I would have, but Jake brought something special to the role of Jimmy. :)

Anonymous said...

Oh I'm with you there WDW, a BBM commentary would have been wonderful! I hate to criticise BBM,but I was disappointed with the extras on the dvd. I remember there were rumours that the so-called Collector's Edition would feature deleted scenes, which I was so excited about, but it turned out not to be the case:( I'm still hoping they'll do another special edition to mark the 10th anniversary or something like that, and we might finally get some really good BBM extras.

Marina, I agree with every word you said. Fight Club was on TV here at the weekend and I taped it but haven't got round to watching it yet. I probably would never hve watched Bubble Boy either if it wasn't for Jake, but it was on TV a while ago and to my surprise I really enjoyed it. Some of his facial expressions are priceless!
As for handsome, I can't think of any other actor who comes close...Clooney maybe, or Heath Ledger (particularly as Ennis) but no-one can compete with Jake's beautiful blue eyes...*sigh*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Marina and Twisted Logic

I've never seen Fight Club either. I've just never fancied it. But I really did like Se7en even though I wasn't expecting to.

As for David Fincher - I originally felt quite hostile towards him because of the stories going round about the hard time he gave Jake, but now having seen their friendliness towards each other at Cannes and, of course, seeing Zodiac itself - I can appreciate that David Fincher brought Jake to his best and drew a performnce from Jake that he should be proud of. So I too am a convert.

I'm a big Bubble Boy fan. I doubt I would ever have seen it without Jake in it (as opposed to films like BBM and DDarko which I would have seen whatever). I loved it - it has some incredibly funny moments in it - and to see Jake dressed as a giant yellow fish... These days I enjoy the commentary on this most of all - and the director calling Jake Jakey.

I can't imagine any actor as handsome as Jake - although I think that Clooney has all the hallmarks of a movie star. But Jake's face is so much more expressive. And yes, he has those blue eyes.

It would be good to see something more from a BBM DVD. It's so frustarting getting no extras at all for a film that we want to know everything about.

Just popping in to say you all really should see Fight Club -- there is more to it than meets the eye at first. And stick with it to the end.

I agree Fincher is an incredible director and I'm glad (now) that he pushed everyone so hard, especially Jake. Yes, it is truly a masterpiece. I, as usual, will buy both DVDs. I don't own many DVDs and 75% of them are Gyllenhaal films.

Anonymous said...

I just have to jump on, this time with a hundred rupees worth!
There is one good reason that the studios are "locked in" about the Zodiac DVD release date and that is that Incognita has a good karma. How in hell will I see that goddam film, forget the extras, unless they do that? The consequence is that they have a good karma too, bless them.

I would urge you twistedlogic to ask Santa for that multiregion player -- I asked him and he gave it to me, which is why I'm able to sit here and "bless" those studios. This Christmas I'm asking for an air ticket across all those ponds and I'm sure he'll grant it!

I'll be back to comment in detail ... this was a wonderful and informative post WDW and all the comments are great.

Just to echo beckela - I put off seeing Fight Club because I didn't think I'd like it. When I eventually watched it, it was not what I was expecting. I would definitely recommend it.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Incognita - You're quite right, this July's release will mean that a huge number of people will be able to see Zodiac for the first time. The rest of us can choose to wait if we wish - although I won't!

Beckela and Ruby - I'll try and pluck up courage...

Anonymous said...

Definitely another fascinating movie (Fight Club) you should see while you wait for the various Zodiacs, WDW :)

Anonymous said...

Hi Incognita:) I'm not the only person in my household who wants a multiregion player (my daughter has her eye on a US-only dvd of one of her favourite TV programmes) so I've got a feeling Santa might just grant our wish;) Hope you get yours too!

Beckela, Ruby and Anouska, thanks for your comments about Fight Club. I'd read a good review of FC in the Tv guide, which is why I taped it (and to see more of Fincher's work while I wait for Zodiac). I'll try to watch it at the weekend.

Carla, the bare bones edition of Zodiac is released on 24th September here in the Uk,if that's any help to you. I have to admit, I'm tempted to pre-order it but I've mananged to resist so far! I'll be redlining it all the way to Blockbuster to rent it though!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anouska - I'm weakening...

Hey Twisted Logic - there's no way an impatient soul such as myself could possibly wait for September - even though I've already seen Zodiac this year more often than I've had cups of coffee. I think Santa has to get a move on to help you all out!

If you see Fight Club at the weekend, please let us know how you get on.

I fear I may be battling with a certain wizard this weekend :D

You know you can hack almost any dvd player to make it multi region (I know you shouldn't but what the hell), Just google hacks for (name and model of the player) and wallah,

My Zodiac dvd should be here tomorrow as it was shipped about a week ago.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - shipped already?! Fab! Let us know when you get it.... ah, when will mine arrive...?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the info, Twistedlogic - I will definitly buy both versions because - if I understand it right - the originial version that we saw in the theatres won´t be part of the the Special Edition. But I need both to compare them....:-))
I am a Fincher fan and I can highly recommend "Fightclub". Usually I am not a fan of Brad Pitt
but between him and Fincher there must be a kind of chemistry because in his movies IMO he is always great.
And for those who were not able to get the Special Edition (Double DVD)of Jarhead - you can order it at Amazon.de without problems.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Carla - Yes, the theatrical release is only going to be available on thie editon so it would be worth having just to compare the two.

Thanks for the info about Jarhead collector's edition - that is WELL worth having.

Anonymous said...

Hey Incognita, hooray for good karma! I'm glad now that there will be two releases of Zodiac, so that you can be sure to see it, as well as others who haven't seen it. It's really a great film.

I guess I should be fair and give Fight Club a chance, I was reading a little bit about it last night and it does sound different than what I expected.

And I've gotta have that Collector's Edition of Jarhead! :)

Anonymous said...

Anon said: "You know you can hack almost any dvd player to make it multi region (I know you shouldn't but what the hell)"

Anon that "almost" is what did me in. I couldn't get the hack code for my particular player and then I found out that the manufacturer was already fighting a court case with big studios over having marketed a multi-region player or some related issue. So keep hacking my friend. I don't think we need studios twisting our arms.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Marina - Oh yes, the Collector's edition of Jarhead is well worth it. In the documentary where the actors film themselves, there's a funny piece where Jake's riding an electric scooter with Atticus running behind. I love that bit!

Incognita - I'm very glad your wait for Zodiac is nearly over - it has been too long.

WOW! From what it sounds like, the Director's cut will really be a "David Fincher type" Director's Cut. Sounds like there will be so many features, I'm surprised it will only be two disks LOL!!! Bless him.Watching the interaction between Jake and Fincher in the photos at Cannes, it seems they are very close and good friends. In fact, I can't recall anyone who's worked with him ever saying anything negative about Jake...Mark Ruffalo excepted...not only do they not say negative things,They sort of seem to fall for him just like the rest of us! I mean, if all those people find him irresistible, who am I???

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Bobbyanna
There was so much chemistry at Cannes not only between Jake and David Fincher but also between Jake and Mark, so hopefully any problems have been forgotten now they're away from the stress of the filmset. Jake is loved by so many people that he works with (except for Jarhead of course, when I think some of them wanted to punch his lights out :D ). At Cannes he was hugged by everyone - and I particularly liked those photos in which Jake and David checked each other's collars.

I think Jake is so easy to fall for as you say - he's just irresistible and he's that way on screen too. So who can blame us...?

Great comment, as always, Bobbyanna - thanks!
