Yesterday, it was a pleasure to look back at two favourite interviews from Jake's flying visit to London for Rendition. Today is the turn of the US shows and, without doubt, the most popular among WDW readers of all the US interviews that Jake took part in during 2007, was the Conan O'Brien show for Zodiac.
This, as if you can't remember, is the one in which Jake was interviewed wearing a cashmere and goat's blood suit, and he revealed he was a dabhand at modern dance but was rubbish at changing diapers/nappies. My own particular favourite bit of this was the poor toad that Jake kicked across the floor in Morocco, leaving me with the image of a worried Douglas Freeman anxiously asking interrogator Abasi if he seemed 'funny' after this close encounter with the poisonous, hallucogenic amphibian. Thanks to Uli, Christie and Neely for telling me about this particular favourite - as Neely said: Conan and Jake could have taken that double act out on the road.
Trekfan opted for my personal favourite TV moment of the year, which was the whole Gooberballs episode on the Letterman Show. But I can't move on from the US TV shows without mentioning my second favourite which was the Rendition Conan O'Brien show in which, with great animation, Jake described attending the Redsox game and how his friend was convinced he'd caught the ball for three whole minutes. I think you know the moment I mean! Unfortunately, the Conan interview is no longer available on YouTube.
This post is illustrated with the favourite pictures of Neely, Christie, Trekfan and Uli. Uli, not surprisingly as she taunts me with it enough, has chosen among her two pictures my least favourite photograph of Jake ever taken - the Interview outtake of Jake playing the guitar.
Proof update
Last weekend I tried to explain why I didn't enjoy Proof. But the feature missed a video interview with Jake. So to make amends here it is. Have to say though, I don't think that B- is bad going for maths, Jake. If that was a bad grade for Jake, then I suspect he got school reports any parent would show off.
Zodiac Director's Cut
I don't want to give too much away about the features in store for us on this highly anticipated DVD but you can read all about them at this review site. It also describes the commentaries. It seems that Jake and Robert Downey Jr recorded their commentary together, just the two of them, which means we are in for a huge treat!
'Fincher sits for a solo commentary track that's on par with his appearances on the Fight Club and Seven discs; a bit intense, but deeply passionate and informative, this is essential stuff for fans not only of Fincher, but also Zodiac. The second commentary track is a bit more sprawling (participants include Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., producer Brad Fischer, screenwriter/producer James Vanderbilt and author James Ellroy; the actors were recorded together, while Vanderbilt, Fischer and Ellroy were recorded together) but just as fascinating, with the actors chatting amongst themselves while the trio dive quite deep into the source material, the project's genesis and theories about the killings. Taken together, it's an exceptional look behind the scenes of this compelling film.' You can read all the details here.

Hi wdw and anyone else who is there. I'm on the train back from London having seen I'm Not There - loved it and I'll tell you about it tomorrow. The Conan interview is a fave ( but not The Fave) of mine too- good choice. Amazing in fact. :)
It's amazing! Hey Ruby *) They're not showing I'm Not There anywhere near me so I'm going to have to head back to the Big Smoke myself to see it. I have to see it! Your fave is coming ;)
I'd like to see INT again actually. You have forget about linear narrative and go along for the ride and enjoy the different representations. Cate B is just fantastic. And so's that deep voiced guy I like ;) different film stocks for different Dylans-a film makers film. Just wonderful the technique is is good as the storytelling.
Hey y'all are really warmning up the cold winter's night! (although its kinda warm and rainy, actually, but - whatver!)
Beautiful pictures, some of my favorites, too. The last four are pure gold.
Oh Jake and the toad! I don't think anyone's ever captured Jake's "chilled toad" look, though. Ive watched this interview so many times. How is it that the powers that be, whomever they be, haha, have not snitched back the earlier talk show interviews?
The ZODIAC DVD sounds wonderful. What a new year's treat.
Im expecting Ruby to watch INT again and again: Im such a Dylan fan, and the style of the film is Dylan-esque.
I have a deeper appreciation of Heath after seeing Candy.
Thanks all!
Ruby - It sounds wonderful - I can't wait to see it. I wish it had a wider release. I want to see that deep-voiced guy you like.
Hey Positively Pia - I'm glad you like the pictrues, those last ones are choices of Trekfan - she has good taste :) Heath has given me an appreciation of Dylan I didn't have before. I can't wait for Zodiac's release... I'm watching Maggie and Kirsten in Moonlight Mile at the moment - I do like this film :)
wdw - I think you mean Mona Lisa Smile - it kinda rhymes with Moonlight Mile :D I was going to watch that, but didn't get home in time.
Sending pre-Christmas smoochies to PIA. :)
PS - whatever you do this holiday season...
Don't Touch A Toad. :D
Thanks for some more great memories WDW! I still laugh out loud at a lot of the interviews, including the Conan and Letterman ones, even though I've watched them a thousand times:D Jake makes me laugh more than any "proper" comedian I can think of. I wish he would do an episode of The Simpsons!
Great pics too, some of my own favourites are in there too;)
Oh, and Jake and RDJ doing the Zodiac commentary together - how cool is that?!
Hey Ruby ... er... I knew that. And I've only had one drink as well. It is such a good film. I have it on DVD but couldn't resist watching it on TV. I like to see Maggie acting with Julia Roberts and Kirsten.
And whatever I do this holiday, you can bet, I'm not touching a toad ;)
Hey TL Nobody makes me laugh like Jake and he was on top form for both of these. I'll never see Gooberballs enough... The commentaries going to be fab!
First up WDW-ers, I hope you all have a brilliant Christmas
/holidays *
Jake on the Simpsons ... nice idea, TL.
Hi Ruby! How sweet to think of you blogging on the train :) Cate is getting great reviews for INT, isn't she?
WDW, happy Christmas again, txt u!
Looks like we need a dream thread in the new year :)
Bad Uli, posting the evangelist pic :D
Pia, from the previous thread, it really is very TS Eliot weather here at the moment. Sort of TS Eliot meets Atkinson Grimshaw - you'd love! :)
Hi A. All of Cate's rave reviews are well deserved. A totally engaging performance.
I'm trying to ignore the evangelist pic. It's just soooo wrong. :D The bike 'n boat pics work best for me.
In case I don't catch you all again - Happy Holidays everyone, don't get too belligerently wasted!
xxx
"TS Eliot meets Atkinson Grimshaw - you'd love! :)"
Giggle giggle giggle - I love it and Im Not (Even) There!
Smooches back at y'all - powdered sugar smooches, at the moment - yay pfeffernusses - ! -
Hey - I have to admit, I'm a little bit on the way to being ever so slightly nonbeligerently wasted - it's all the present wrapping I've had to do tonight. It takes it out of one.
Good to see you Anouska and Ruby - keep texting me :D I'm very jealous of Ruby's (and Jake's I'm sure) new gadget... A dream thread is a great idea because we do all seem to have some strange dreams, not all of them are publishable I'm sure.
I can't wait to see Cate and Heath. It should be in every cinema, mutter, mutter.
Yep, Bad Uli for that pic... Out of all of the pics she could have chosen... I tend to go for the woodchoppin' pic myself, or the bike one - mind you, there's something to be said for the boat pic, and the cover, in fact all of the pics except this horror!
Hey Pia - don't listen to Anouska, the weather's 'orrible and not a little spooky.
WDW I think Anouska was figuring Id love the London fog, all the English novels Ive read y'know, not to mention flics -
It's very Bleak House, that's true enough. You could almost expect to see Sherlock Holmes walking by with his cane tapping.
Defo, Pia, you'd love it. I love it too (sorry WDW, I'm funny that way). If TS Eliot and AG had met, Pia, Tom would only have been about six :)
My choice from Interview would be the fishing waders pic. I just liked where the water was lapping :p
It seems to be midnight so I'd better be off. *
Night Anouska *) I've always been spooked by the fog but that's probably because I have to do so much driving:(
I like the fishing pic for that very same reason ;) And it makes me wonder how funny it was with Jake climbing into the water without getting a drop on that smart shirt...
WDW driving in fog is nervewracking, indeed.
I like bike and biceps. also the brown t-shirt, in fact I ordered a similar shirt from LLBean for Christmas, only it's marino wool and green.
O gosh Anouska's off to bed and I had a Tom Eliot quote. Poo. I'll use it anyway,
HURRY UP PLEASE IT'S TIME
Goonight Ruby. Goonight Anouuska. Goonight Kate. Goonight TL. Goonight. Ta ta. Goonight. Goonight. Good night, ladies, good night, sweet ladies, good night, good night.
Hi Pia and Goodnight to everyone. I've watched so many programmes tonight about Christmas dinners through the centuries, I'm worried mine will be found lacking. I wonder if Jake will be involved in the cooking - I reckon he will be. I wonder if he can give me some tips... Have a good night and plenty of Jake deams :D
Just wanted to pop in and wish all of you a very Happy Christmas!!!!! My younger daughter is here and eldest Daughter arrvives around noon on Christmas Eve. We are experiencing horrribly strong winds and had no electrical power for more than nine hours. Frigid temperatures inside as well as outside!!!! So finally we are getting toasty and ready to say good night. Totally exhausted. Will visit more soon!
Whew! Great reminders of those wonderful interviews..jake is just such a charming and funny man..I suppose we can add that to his already loooong list of qualities...I loved everyone's pics..and I don't need to ask which one is Christie's....b/w smiler...oh yeah! Mind you, they were all lovely...the other black and white one is a favourite too...the santa hat..and the ever beautiful Jack Twist...yep, some nice choices here..thank you Jakers!
Oh and I'm seriously looking forward to that Jake/Robert Downey commentary!!!!
Finally...Merry Christmas! to All.
I enjoyed the toad episode, thinking that maybe Jake really enjoyed himself while filming in Morocco. Then a few months later, I saw the finished film. Yikes! Now I understand why Jake grasped at such straws to make the experience less ghastly :-( .
I can just picture Jake and Metwally and that Grand Inquisitor
sitting in the dungeon between takes, rubbing the hallucinogenic toad and getting as high as possible. :-)
P.S.
This being the silly season, I thought I would tie things together. The picture of Jake playing the guitar reminds me of the "Frog goes a-courting" song.
Think of Jake *after* morphing into the Moroccan toad, and then courting some cute little female toad/frog. :-)
You know, I have feelings too... :'( ;)
Thanks for posting "THE" pic... ;D ;D ;D
One day when Jake and I are happily married I will ask him, what he thinks of this picture...
