Jake - 'I was actually bookended by Tony Blair and Mick Jagger'

After a relatively traumatic night, from which I'm still warming up, it feels good to revisit the summer and feel the warmth of sun and blue skies, a time when Jake was lost to public view on Martha's Vineyard. MV isn't just a summer home for Jake, it's also the place where much of Moonlight Mile took shape - it was at MV that Jake and Moonlight Mile director, writer and producer Brad Silberling came together because, completely coincidentally and fortuitously, Brad bought the house next door to the Gyllenhaals - they were 'destined to work together'.

Brad found Jake to be just like him, 'it was eerie'. Brad met Jake when Jake was just 18 and Jake grew stubble to keep Brad interested in employing him. Jake was too young but as the film took shape Jake grew older until at last Brad admitted to himself, 'It's his film, let's figure out the rest.' Jake agrees that 'the similarities were pretty staggering in a way.'

In this interview, recorded for Mvyradio in 2003, Jake and Brad reminisce about the origins of Moonlight Mile, the reasons for Jake's casting as Joe Nast, the meaning of MV to them both and, above all, the extraordinary soundtrack. As Jake says: 'I can't stop playing the soundtrack in my car, I cannot stop playing it. I stole it from Brad and I play the Travis track over and over and over and over again.'

At the very heart of this movie - an 'emotional biography' - is its music. Jake says that each day they would walk around with an earpiece playing the sounds of the film - 'I'd walk down the street with Van Morrison playing.' According to Brad, the music was another performer in the film. The song Moonlight Mile, by the Rolling Stones, is 'a pivotal song... that binds the love story in our film', so says Brad. It's 'a classic road song' and 'Jake does a beautiful job playing a character who has to choose to sort of speak his emotional truth or not.'

Brad recalls that he flew over to London to see Jake in This Is Our Youth and that, while in London, Jake had met the bassist of Travis. Jake describes that it had been 'at an awards show. I made a fool out of myself in London. I was the only American amongst a lot of Brits' ('surprise, surprise' interrupts Brad), 'I was actually bookended by Tony Blair and Mick Jagger... I don't know what I was doing there,' Jake says, '...You guys have great food.' Very true, Jake!

The interview closes by remarking that Jake could be seen in three films at that time: Moonlight Mile, The Good Girl and Lovely and Amazing, all with incredible actors. Jake says 'They're all about human beings, kind of what I'm drawn to, the real, everyday goings on and sort of the magnitude of these things can be huge, are huge, blowing things out of proportion and huge...'

Jake's asked what he's going to do next on MV: 'I'm going to do a little gardening, maybe go to the beach, take a proper vacation and play some basketball with some friends at the end of the day.' Sound good to me.

Hey WDW! Hope you're feeling a bit better now:) I can't get the interview to play:( Well, it's playing ok, there's just no sound! (And yes, I have checked the volume is on on the computer!) Thanks for typing the transcript so at least I know what Jake said:) I love Moonlight Mile, and I agree that the siundtrack is wonderful. Sweet Thing by Van Morrison is one of my favoutite songs ever, before I'd even heard of Jake, so I loved hearing it at the end of MM and of course now it always reminds me of Jake:)
Always nice to hear Jake talking about his UK experiences - I hope Blair and Mick Jagger appreciated how lucky they were to be so close to Jake;)

Hey TL - It won't play? It plays for me OK. It lasts about 25 minutes but I've put down here the things that Jake said that meant the most to me. The soundtrack of MMile is absolutely sensational and I play it all the time - I love the thought of Jake playing the Travis song over and over again. I love that Jke does what I do and replays a track to death when he loves it. I really enjoy the UK bits too. I am sorry you cab't hear it...

I'm still really cold and shivering :( Jake's good at warming me up though.

Awwww WDW, what an enjoyable post. Moonlight Mile (of course) is one of my favorite movies ever, and the soundtrack is one reason why. I'll play songs I like over and over and over too, to completely absorb them, until a new favorite comes along. I especially like the score, variations on Jorma Kaukonen's "The Telling", very sad when Joe in in room going through Diana's things. *sigh* Of course, "I'll Be Your Lover Too" in one of the most tender and perfect love scenes ever. I loved Ellen Pompeo's Bertie, hiding behind a tough exterior, and her dialogue was wonderful. That and the its being filmed around MV make Bertie one of my favorite of Jake's leading ladies. Thanks, you always have something wonderful here. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Just noticed... TL you've gone all Christmassy ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Bertie -thanks for commenting because you reminded me of this, one of my favourite Jake films and Ellen is definitely one of my favourite leading ladies in a Jake film - in fact, she may well be my favourite (with the lovely Emmy and then Jen just behind).

There's not a song on that soundtrack I don't love. Song to a Siren is amazing - I alwys loved the version by This Mortal Coil but this is amazing too. One of the reasons why I love Jake in film so much is that I associate him with some incredible and meaningful songs - and knowing as well that Jake loves music too doesn't hurt.

The Moonlight Mile song scene reduces me to a wreck every time, without fail.

Thank you, Bertie *)

Hey WDW! It's weird how I always have trouble with Jake's radio interviews. I've tried playing it with windows Media Player and real player but there's just no sound with either of them:( And it's not the volume controls cos I tested it and nearly destroyed my hearing when U2 came blaring out of the speakers! I'll have a proper look tomorrow and see if I can fix it and in the meantime I'll watch a bit of MM. I really appreciate you doing a post at all tonight after your horrible experience earlier.

And yes, I've gone all Christmassy;) I'm actually a bit of a Scrooge, I hate Xmas and find it really depressing, but Jake in his Santa hat makes it much more bearable;)

Thanks for the new post WDW. Good thing that frost bite didn't affect your senses :)

MM is one of my top fav movies that Jake has ever done. I particularly loved the scene when he's at the dining table talking about what it's like after loosing his girlfriend when the girls mom's asks him what he's been doing. Also love the make out scene...he's really going at it with Bertie in that kissing moment. And of course when he's on the witness stand talking. These are the finer Jake moments in movie dome.

Glad your thawing out finally :)

Still cold and shivering WDW? have you put on your bunny slippers, had a good supper, and so forth? Do not get a chill!

There is ice falling from the skies, here, and because of this Im going to bed early, wake me up when it's over.

The amazing artifacts that you dig up! journey of jake. I found this interview fasinating. I love the moon/water/Joe sequence - with the swimmer in the background! Agree that the soundtrack is wonderful.

Im with you and Jake in playing songs I love over and over - even as a teenager; used to drive my parents nuts.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL - It is weird you can't play it - it's just a wmp file for me so I just don't know why it won't play for you ;) I don't think I can download it - if anyone can, please let me know. I have trouble with Christmas too but Jake in that Santa Hat does help :D

Hey CWG - I love MMile too and was very ready for some happy nostalgia tonight. I love the witness stand moment and that bit where Joe tells Bertie that he lost his friend. Sob.

I'm still really cold :(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Positively Pia - not up to food yet, just sitting by the fire. At least I'm going to be staying in to work tomorrow.

I'm so glad you like this interview. I love it - Jake on MV talking about music, holidays, London and filmmaking - perfect :D

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! Pia's right, you should eat something, like soup, to warm yourself up:) Sorry, going into over protective motherly mode again!

Hi CWG - I love that dining room scene too! I love the dark humour in MM but I also choke up at certain moments too. It's a brilliant little film, shame it never got much recognition:( But as I've said before about a million times, I'd rather Jake did small but quality films like MM than a thousand big money blockbusters with no quality or soul. Jake does know how to make good choices, so I always trust his judgement even if I'm not too sure about some of his projects, like the Namath thing.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks TL. And MMile is a wonderful film - another of those roles of Jake's where he doesn't say much but he's at the centre of so many scenes.

I'm getting off now so g'night all and enjoy the interview :D

twistedlogic said...

Night WDW:) Hope you have lots of lovely Jake dreams;)

chillinwitgyllen said...

TL, in that dining room scene he acts like he's going to take out a gun and shoot someone...love his intensity. Like he's saying 'your asking a stupid question, stupid people!

I have to confess something...I made reservations under the name 'Gyllen' a little over the top I know :)

Pia, I love the way you articulate :)

Well, thank you, CWG - it's fun to play with y'all because y'all like to play. LOL at making reservations under Gyllen -

Sleet still sleetin' - Im going to dive under the covers. g'nite!

Hey WDW!

I haven't visited here in quite a while! Just spent the last half hour going through interviews and such that I missed.

If you don't mind, I have a request. It's getting closer to the holidays and I was wondering if we could get some Jakey-love? And by Jakey-love, I mean Jake, sans clothing, with a Santa cap between his legs. You know what I mean. :) My (and probably a few others, too) favorite scene from Jarhead!

Pretty, pretty please? With sugar on top?

sass said...

Hi WWDW,
I missed your car troubles...hope you've warmed up just a bit. Almost a native Californian here, and well acquainted with cars stopping on freeways. However, I never had to manage on a bitter cold night.
Please have good hot food and drink for while to warm you up.

I'll come over later to read and listen to the interview. *happy me* TY:)
I sent you a post earlier today about an ex-agent of our CIA and rendition etc.
soft warm hugs to ya,
sass

This has been my favorite Jake site for some time now, really the only one I visit regularly anymore. The only one I need! So, thank you very much for this comprehensive Jake enjoyment!! XO, from Melby (dcf)

Hi, I think it's time to show a sign of life here again! I just caught up a bit and read about the problems with your car! It's too late, because I guess you warmed up again already with the help of some Jake hotness, but nevertheless: Feel hugged! Car break down in the evening in winter, when it's dark and cold, sounds just horrible.
I hope the car could be fixed without a bigger problem :-/

A very belated: Cooooool, that Ruby and you could go and see Stephen Gyllenhaal!!

And now for your latest post: Thanks for posting about this lovely interview! I have always sooooo much fun when I listen to it!! (for those who had problems listening to it - you can also find it in the media section of IHJ for download).
If after that interview you don't also love Brad Silberling a little bit, then I don't know! :D
Jake and Brad are just wonderful together here! And thanks for posting that cute pic of those two together - makes me smile everytime I see it! Brad seems to be deeply in love! :D

LOL, you forgot to mention one of my favourite parts of that interview, though. You kind of faded out after the "blowing things out of proportion" quote. After that Jake says that he is going to sell himself out and do one of those huge big budgeted movies...! *Grins* And as far as I understand they say he can do that now because he already has his Marthas Vinyard street credit(?). LOL!

I think I told you before what a wonderful site you have here - but that cannot be said too often! It really is a great site - and when you want to see "new" news and "old" news about Jake this really is the place to go! And you do such a great job editing the stuff for your devoted readers!
There is only one problem: You are posting too much!!! Joking, of course, but at the moment I have a hard time catching up, LOL!

Thank you!!!

Morning everyone - thick frost out there but working from home today so I (and the car) can recover from last night.

CWG - I love that you made reservations under the name of Gyllen :) Rather like when Twisted Logie almost called the gasman out as Mrs Gyllenhaal :D Thought I'd remind her of that classic moment of 2007.

Good to see you Fourplay. I have in mind a whole range of festive and commemorative posts, don't you fear! Santajake could definitely feature...

Thanks Sass and thanks for the email :D I'm off out to buy whiskey later that's for sure, what a time to run out. I hope you enjoy the interview.

Thanks so much Melby! Wow, what a nice thing to say :D

Uli my friend, where have you been, I've been missing you! Thanks for the hug. I was so cold last night it reminded me of how cold I was standing out in Rome and at the Baftas, but this came without the Jake treat so no good at all. But I suppose it gave me practice.

I didn't realise just how much Brad and Jake had in common but they both seem so nuts on one another - love that! Yeah it was funny at the end, he said credit?! Glad you like it so don't disappear again, gottit? *)

Morning WDW, good to hear you warmed up well last night. Fingers crossed you get home safely tonight.

What a truly wonderful post. I adore MM, it's a fantastic film, and one that touches me. I agree with everyone's comments about the film, and about the music - my favourite scene is the jukebox scene, that melts me completely..and the follow on scene, when Joe meets Bertie in the closet. Oh and when Joe goes to see Bertie and says "I miss you, I wanna see you". Well, you can guess I liked it all.

Have you seen the "making of MM" vid that's on youtube? I'm sure you all have but here it is anyway (hope its ok to post this link):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ej9dNwl0Gk

I will have to play the interview later, am at work now, plus will be going out for a christmas lunch shortly. Look forward to hearing Jake talk with Brad on MV.

Thanks WDW.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Christie! Thanks - I'll be fine today as I'm at home, thank heavens as it's freezing out there. Thanks for the link to the Making of video - I really love that. Those are my two favourite scenes in both. Enjoy your Christmas lunch!

Christie said...

oops, didn't read your previous post properly WDW! Of course you are at home, I'm sure you are very relieved.

Glad you liked the MM vid. I love it. Love Jake doing a cartwheel! That boy is so athletic. And watching him listen to music, not realising he's being filmed. I love the music that plays over the vid too.

Hey WDW, I try not to disappear again - although I am never far anyway... :-*

Still gotta decide what favourite moments and pics of 2007 I send you for Jake's birthday... Or is it too late already? :-/
Unlike you I don't have any really "personal" moments, but I have some things in mind already... :)

Glad to see, that you could work from home today. Is it so cold in the UK? Here it is rather wet than cold...
I am only at home in the morning today - but gotta run to work soon - was expecting a delivery of 5 tons of wood (new bookshelves - my other ones are bursting...). So I put the time I had at home to good use and left a few comments here ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ooh Christie - I'm going to have to watch that video again, I love those bits :D

Hey Uli - it's flippin freezing here, thick frost and I've got to go out into it now...

No, it's not too late so I'll look forward to getting your favourite moment and pic :D

5 tons of wood! If I had that amount of wood round here right now, I'd burn it for warmth.

agent_krycek said...

I do love MM, and it's soundtrack, but it'll never be a top Jake film for me, and that's completely down to Ellen Pompeo - I seriously can't stand the woman, there's no particular reason for it, I'm sure she's lovely, but she just appears on screen and I'm irrated at her (Patrick Dempsey has exactly the same effect on me - so no, I don't watch Grey's ;) - weirdly the entire lineup of Franz Ferdinand do it as well - I possibly need professional help :o

For some reason I've completely convinced myself that Great Leap is going to be filmed in the UK - delusion of my own making with no evidence, but it's making me happy :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ahhh 'The Gwyneth Paltrow Effect' as I call it Agent K. I really like Ellen whereas I can't watch Proof because of GP so I know what you mean. Strange about Franz Ferdinand though ;)

I'm with you with Giant/Great Leap, so let's keep that delusion going, along with all my others for Brothers/Twins :D

Anonymous said...

Poor WDW for having to go out to the frost!

But nooooo, I couldn't burn my book shelves - I am so glad I got them...

If Great Leap is going to be filmed in the UK then I am going to move there! Or I will personally camp outside the head offices of Jaguar, Landrover, Rover or whatever other British carmanufactures you have till they give my company a new project, so that I can work in your beautiful country that will be even more beautiful with Jake in it... ;)

LOL at the Gwyneth Paltrow and Ellen Pompeo effect... I am glad, that none of Jake's movie love interests has that effect on me...
Hm, Heath maybe... (JUST JOKING!!)

But in general I understand the concept of that effect. I cannot think of an actress right now - but Celine Dion certainly has that effect on me... ;)

You wouldn't believe how fast I am shovelling my lunch into me while typing at the same time! I hope I will not be late for my meeting at work...

Later! :-*

Hey, WDW!!!! Hope you got all snuggly and warm and had a good night's sleep for all you went thru yesterday evening. You triggered memories of one of my worst experiences!Long ago, in another century (or two)I was a college student in Wisconsin.Six of us had a breakdown on a Saturday night in weather that was below zero (Farenheit)in a rural area at two AM. Very scarey, bcz we truly could have frozen to death. A nice farmer called the state police for us. But for about three hours it was very, very frightening!
The MM audio is such a gem! Thanks so much for finding it and sharing it with us.

I don't mind Ellen Pompeo so much, but I cannot stomach Gwyneth! I just cannot. She was so entirely unappealing she almost ruined PROOF for me.Just couldn't see why Harold was attracted to her...at all. When they went into her bedroom and she kept figuratively and literally pushing him away? I wanted to just...slap her! LOL! I wonder. Proof is a film I just don't recall Jake talking about. And I 've never read anything anyone else from the film ever said. (Maybe Gwyneth was yucky to everyone in RL, too.)The only thing I didn't care for in MM was Joe's hair...and they could have shot a better shower scene...
Have to get ready for work now. Cheers!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Uli Be great to see you over here :D Poor old Celine! Have a good afternoon.

Hi Bobynna - that sounds horrendous. I was a bit scared as I was on my own and it was not a good spot to be - a motorway outside London, so cold, and the rescue people couldn't find me. So today I'm spending the time playing with the car, alternating between shouting at it and trying to coax it with love!

The love scene in Proof? Ugh. I keep wanting to shout at Hal not to bother. There's more chemistry between Jack Twist and McGuirre than there is between Hal and Catherine, or whatever she was called in that. I've never done a Poof post - that could be a challenge!

I wasn't too keen on Joe's hair or clothes - and I don't think Jake did either :D Here's hoping for better clothes, better hair and better shower scenes in Brothers and GL!

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! Glad to hear you're recovering at home today. Hope the car gets fixed ok:)

Thanks Uli for letting me know about the IHJ link to the interview, but unfortunately that doesn't work for me either:( It's so weird cos I've tried about 10 other links on the mvy site and they all work fine, it's just Jake's one that remains silent - SO annoying!!! Even more annoying than Gwyneth's character in Proof, and that's saying something!
I'm joining Agent Krycek in hoping that Giant Leap (I'm sorry but I hope they come up with a better title cos that's just so cheesy) will be filmed in London. The thought crossed my mind too cos Jake mentioned in a radio interview (one that I actually got to listen to, I think it might have been with Capital Radio) that he'd be back in London soon, and I'm sure he didn't mean just to visit me;(

chillinwitgyllen said...

Hi everyone, glad your recovering WDW, wish I can say the same, I'm so hurried today. I love the holidays but they stress me out so thanks to this place for helping me mellow out. Hope all is well. Dreaming of a walk on the beach and sunshine :)

G'morning, all! Nine am in Santa Fe, clear and cold, brrrr! More snow on the mountains.

Today is Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, much beloved in Mexico and hispanic communities of N.M. The hispanic low riders paint pictures of Guadalupe on their car hoods . . .

I wonder if Sheridan and cast and crew are interacting with local cultures - (Hispanic, Sikh, Muslim, Native American, Anglo) - Robert Redford fell in love with the place and people - I am so curious about the sites that were listed, and how these are to be used!

I can't access the MM video, either. .

Great Leap even as working title is so totally tacky!

Sleety weather continues - Sass, "almost a Californian"? Always think of you as NYCer. . . as for Jake, I think sometimes you can take the boy out of CA but you cant take CA outta the boy - whatcha think?

chillinwitgyllen said...

Nice avatar TL :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL your computer has a Jake allergy - damn, that's awkward... well if Jake comes to London he'll be able to see quite a few of us so it'll be a worthwhile trip :D

Sorry you're stressed CWG - I find this a hard time of the year myself. And it's my birthday coming up :(

Morning Positively Pia! Soudns cold everywhere. Oh to be in California. I agree, Jake is most definitely a CA boy and I would never think of him as anything else. I do hope Jake's interacting like you say. It an't be easy when you stand out a sore but very beautiful thumb but I'm sure he could find a way.

Hi WDW,hello people! I've just been catching up on a few of the posts I've missed while in a self-imposed purdah and it's great work as usual,WDW!

I sympathise greatly with your recent probs, having been somewhat in the doldrums myself and also having vehicle and cold related problems...to be specific,we got back from rescuing a very shaken but unhurt friend last Saturday when some speedfreak totalled her car for her, only to find our boiler had packed up just as it turned Siberian here in the UK. The guy who was supposed to be mending it today has had to cancel to look after his missus who feels worse than expected after an operation, poor soul,so we'll be freezing our assets off until Saturday!

Well,I've got a halogen heater strapped to me at the moment so I don't freeze to the keyboard and the cats are hogging the gas fire downstairs. And my husband has been doing romantic things for me like putting a Hot water bottle in my side of the bed and wrapping my nightie round it to warm up for a while before we dive under the covers!

Only had time to read your transcript of the Brad and Jake interview so far, hope I can get it to play.I love MM and the lovely Dustin has been promoting his new film in the last couple of days which made me all nostalgic for Joe Nast,so this is a timely post. Poor Agent Krycek having the film ruined by the Ellen Pompeo effect. I thought she felt "right" in this film and not even Gwynnie can put me off lusting after Jake as Hal in "Proof",but I do sympathise though girls, there are certain actresses who make my skin crawl too but I'll refrain from naming names here...

You have such great taste,WDW,in music as well as men! I adore "This Mortal Coil"'s version of "Song To The Siren" too,Liz Frazer's("Cocteau Twins") vocal is so haunting and spellbinding. If anyone else, like me, actually finds heart-rending,wrist-slashing music cathartic, check out the "This Mortal Coil" album "It'll End In Tears" which features the above track. A masterpiece of marvellous misery,I tell you!

Oh and re your comment at 13.32 WDW,you must do a Poof post, challenging or not, I'm sure we'd enjoy it! ;-) (well some of us would,eh Anouska?!)

Hugs to one and all,
Nadine xx

Hey Nadine! Great to see you back and you've got me chortling away already :D Sorry to hear of your heating problems (sounds like you can find ways to warm up...) and friend's troubles. My car is leaky :(

There has been a lot about Dustin in the UK and London papers lately so it did seem timely. So you're a fan of This Mortal Coil too - I love them and have all their albums. Blood is my favourite.

I'm collecting bits and pieces together for a post on Proof but it is not particularly pleasurable ;) (ooh, too many Ps in that sentence). As a few people have said over recent days - Jake just doesn't talk about it - do we want to remind him? Great to have you back!

I'm posting from work, so this will have to be a drive-bay posting:

"Moonlight Mile" starts with a dream sequence, so this is a good time to mention that I dreamed about Jake last night. I dreamed that Jake was filming in Boston (where I live), and I somehow knew what his bicycling route was going to be: He was supposed to swing by the Beethoven School in West Roxbury (part of Boston), so I sat on the curb at the intersection he was going to pass through, and sure enough there he was! He smiled when he saw me sitting there....

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paulh - I love hearing about our Jake dreams - we seem to be having a few during these long winter nights. That sounds like a good one - Jake knew just where to be. Thanks for sharing :D

Christie said...

I adore This Mortal Coil's version of "Song to the siren" too, its beautifully haunting. My favourite line "Did I dream you dreamed about me?" But its all gorgeous. This song also appears in the Heath Ledger film "Candy" (which for those in the UK is on Film4 tomorrow night) and on the soundtrack there is the original version, by Tim Buckley. I have to say I still prefer This Mortal Coil's. Something about that voice...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Christie! Yeay, another fan. I love that song too. Candy was on the other night but so late and my Freeview recorder wouldn't work (it's as temperamental as my car right now). I rally want to see it, so I'll have another go tomorrow.

twistedlogic said...

(((Nadine))) Good to see you back, hon! And thank you Christie for letting us know about Candy being on tomorrow! I realised too late it was on on Sunday, so I was hoping there'd be a repeat. So tomorrow night I'll be spared from having to choose a Jake film to watch, I'll watch Heath instead;)
