Jake sings and dances for us again and more news from Brothers

2007 began with Jake Gyllenhaal singing his heart out on SNL. Do you want to hear him sing again? In this newly posted video from the 2004 Sundance Film Festival you can see and listen to Jake singing and kind of dancing with the lovely Zooey Deschanel. There's no better way to start off the holidays than with Jake making us smile. You can also see the video here.

Talking of Sundance, the next one kicks off on 17 January 2008, in Utah. In the five days preceding this a series of screenwriting workshops are to be held in Utah and one of those leading the event is Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal. This feature includes some more of my own favourite pictures, mostly from this year.

Brothers update

Thanks to this Tobey Maguire site, we can see another couple of photos from the Brothers set. There's also this account: 'I got to watch Tobey Maguire and cast-mates finish up 2 days of shooting an upcoming movie, “Brothers,” at the conference site. The Glorieta Conference Center had been transformed into a Marine camp (”Camp Mahlus”), and from a balcony perch last Thursday, we watched setup, make-up, and shooting! So not only did we see Spidey himself, but they filmed three takes of one of the movie’s scenes - a very cool process indeed. Sure, that whole scene will be, at most, 10 seconds of the movie. But it was still pretty neato - and a fun way to finish out Act I of this amazing tripAdmittedly, there's no Jake in site in these so, to compensate, I'll repeat a couple of pictures which are more than worth repeating.

Zodiac's success

One could start to feel suspicious - the SAG Awards have joined the Globes in completely ignoring Zodiac and its extraordinary director, cast and crew, and yet so many other critics are going to great lengths to include Zodiac on all the lists. Of course, Rendition and other films about the Middle East and terror fail to get a mention anywhere. But, it's the holiday season (as of an hour ago) and so to focus on the positive:

The results of the Indiewire Critics Poll have been announced and there is Zodiac at number 2, second only to There Will Be Blood. You can see the complete list of all the categories here and read more about the choices here. Robert Downey Jr and Mark Ruffalo - but, alas, no Jake, are in the Best supporting actor category (8th and 15th respectively), David Fincher is the equal 2nd Best director, Harry Savides is equal 2nd for the cinematography and James Vanderbilt is equal 2nd for the screenplay. In the full list, Jake is placed 38th in the Best Actor category, which means that almost everyone and their dog was placed higher. This is fascinating stuff for anyone with an interest in filmmaking and the good films of 2007.

Time Out Chicago has given us their critics' lists. Zodiac is the top favourite for the film writer, Ben Kenigsberg: '1. Zodiac David Fincher’s masterpiece may have turned its fans into Zodiac buffs, but the movie’s broader subject is the elusiveness of truth—and the obsession the search for truth provokes. The screenplay’s marshaling of detail is remarkable, and a uniformly riveting cast makes every scene crackle.' The film is second choice for the film editor. CHUD has voted the 'Montage' scene, in which 'San Francisco moves on and grows up' as one of its favourite scenes of the year.

It was also good news to read that the San Francisco Chronicle's book editor Oscar Villalon in an article today named Zodiac as his favourite film of the year (although he did admit to only having seen four films during the entire year - at least he saw one of the two that mattered).

Includes pictures from IHJ, Just Jared and here.

Great pictures, WDW - my favorite is the one with Atticus. Just beautiful. And are those cowboy boots I see Jake wearing in another pic? My weakness . . . *sigh*. Loving the Brothers tatoo as well.

Glad to see that Zodiac is getting the recognition it deserves.

The Screenwriters Workshops at Sundance sound great too! :) Thanks for a great post.

WDW, for some reason when I click on the YouTube it doesn't work. :( Can you post a direct link to the YouTube?

Great info as always to get into the holiday mood!

Hi Bertie - good to see you! I love that picture with Atticus too, but the picture of Jake with the white t-shirt, the long legged jeans and the boots is quite possibly my favourite Jake picture - and it has been for well over a year. About time I posted it :) Thanks :)

Sorry about that Get Real - it works fine for me. I'll post another link in the post, but, just in case, click on the main image and also on the play arrow underneath. Happy holidays!

Thanks, WDW! Finally got the video to work. So hilarious! Have seen pictures from that presentation with ZD but what a treat to finally see the video. Love goofy, adorable Jake. :)

I love the video! I hadn't seen that one before either, so that was a treat, and it definitely started MY holiday off with a smile. :)

Down with the SAG Awards. What's up with these people? I'm glad that others appreciated Zodiac though.

I'm still thudding about over the Jake Brothers look from this morning....going to be thudding for some time I think....I'm so looking forward to any more pics we might get...I mean I liked the other new one's today...but I just wished they were of Jake too...( eye roll...) I'm so predictable.

Beautiful pics too...the one of Jake with Atticus is REALLY nice...and any Jake in a white t-shirt pic does it for me...sigh..

Thank you for another great post WDW. I hope you have a glass of wine there to start your holiday celebrations!

Glad you got it working Get Real - worth it, isn't it? :D I'd seen the pictures before but never seen the video - and heard it!

Hi Rosie - so glad you enjoyed the video. I think you could have heard me laughing down the street! Even though it doesn't always involve Jake, I love to hear what I can from the set as it's so interesting thinking how the film is coming together and then we can remember that when we see it. I remember that with the very rare glimpses we had of Rendition.

I'm enjoying the wine and the start of the holidays - hope you are too :D

WDW, if this is any consolation to us, Johnny Depp placed #67 on the Best Performance List (for Sweeney Todd). I have always admired Depp, and I think that an appreciation of his and Jake's efforts tend to be clouded in the minds of some critics by their heartthrob status. It doesn't matter: both of them continue to do exquisite work. I am confident that time will vindicate our own assessment.

Great post!

tpe - Thanks for that about Johnny Depp. Quite interesting and totally unfathomable, along with Jake's ranking.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Tpe - great to see you here, thanks so much for commenting. I was so outraged by the injustice of Jake being 38th that I didn't get further down the list. I thought it was bad for Jake but to place Johnny Depp at 7 defies belief. But you're right, regardless of all this, both actors do the work they choose to do. And we are fortunate for that.

Thanks Beckela - hope you're having a good evening *)

So,WDW,the Indiewire critics rank Jake at a lowly No.38 in the Best Actor Poll. What a load of useless, miserable Rankers they are!

Enjoyed the quick peak onto the Brothers set and the Jakey-photos were all a treat, especially the first two for me. There's something very casual but classy about Jake in that cream v-neck pullover which really pushes my buttons and I just love the one with Atticus. I love all of his doggie related shots and it's too long since we saw a new picture of Jake walking/playing with Atticus. Poor Atti, bet you miss your Daddy, huh, when he's got other fish to fry? Remember Jake, when beset by the fakers of Hollyweird, you can always rely on your dog!

You are welcome, beckela. You are right. "Unfathomable" is the word.

WDW, thank you so much for your wonderful post. Rest assured, I read them every day.

Jake is a wonderful and extremely subtle artist. Alas, his art is perhaps much too subtle for some of these critics. This is not surprising, statistically speaking: there are much more bad critics out there than there are bad actors.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Nadine - 'Miserable Rankers' indeed!! I have quite a few pictues which I want to pst but haven't fit any featues. This end of year roundup is perfect because I can indulge myself. I love to see Jake with Atticus too. When Jake filmed Jarhead in New Mexico and California he had Atticus with him, maybe this time? You like the easter pic, eh? I love that series because I can identify with them so much.

Thanks Tpe, that's good to know. there are much more bad critics out there than there are bad actors. Very true and it's worth our while remembering it. I wish I didn't want to see Zodiac taking all the awards it deserves but I can't help myself. I would love David Fincher to walk on stage and claim that Oscar. I find it bewildering and frustrating when sometimes the decision seems to have so little to do with the film. And to place Jake 38th? The mind boggles...

It's likely that Zodiac won't get any (major) awards, but it's nice to see that a lot of critics appreciate it. I think all involved in the movie can be proud. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I agree Anon and that's the comfort. It is a great movie and a lot of critics realise it and are saying it. Thanks for commenting :)

OMG, that video is hilarious! Thank you, WDW :) I loved Zooey Deschanel in TGG, I always wish Holden had dumped Justine and got together with Cheryl;D
Love the pics today- Jake can't go wrong the white t-shirt,jeans and boots combo! And I love the escalator one too,cos not only does he look gorgeous, but he's following my escalator safety tips that I gave him here;D I have to say though, nothing comes close to the new Brothers pics for me right now, I'm still finding it hard to stop looking at them! Lord knows how I'm going to survive watching Bad Boy Jake on the big screen, it was hard enough trying to appear calm and unaffected watching that scene in Rendition:)

It's good to see Zodiac getting recognition in some of these end of year lists. I don't normally take much notice of critics, they're only people with an opinion, like any of us, except they have a larger platform to broadcast their opinion from. But it might encourage a lot of people to get the dvd, when they might not otherwise have bothered - or even heard of the film, given how low key its release was:( It's had the odds stacked against it from the start really:(
As for Jake being at number 38 in that poll - it must be a misprint! If Johnny Depp is at number 67 then something's clearly gone horribly wrong. Hi tpe, btw, nice to see you here:)

tpe, i agree. Johnny Depp and Jake are subtle actors and sometimes their good performances go unnoticed. I don't think it has much to do with their "heartthrob" status. Leo DiCaprio, who is also a "heartthrob", is a very showy (he is good with emotional scenes like anger, desperation) actor and that's why his good performances get noticed all the time. That's why i'm surprised why most critics appreciated Jake's and even more Heath's subtle acting in BBM!

Well, I looked at the link with all the critics choices for year end performances, etc. While I totally disagree that Jake should be 38. The one consolation is that there are many great actors and great performances from this year that are even lower down the list. So this poll makes me go WTF to how they came up with these numbers. Whatever the case, we know Jake was excellent in Zodiac and Rendition.

All the pics of Jake in this post are fab! Jake knows how to work it all, especially a white t-shirt and jeans. But like TL I can't stop drooling at the new Brothers bad boy pics. ;p

Oh WDW, I can't keep up anymore...so much fun stuff to read and appreciate.

The video is fantastic. I've always liked Zoey, even more than her sister, if that's possible. She is so talented. When she is on the intercom, advising store customers about sales, and going on and on with other zany bits of conversation, I nearly PMP laughing. TGG was Jennifer's best movie.

The Sundance clip makes me want to see Jake on Broadway more than ever. Perhaps he will do the play. It was supposed to be ready to go by November, 2008, election day.

Thanks again for the Youtube clip. I saved it to my Youtube favs, to watch at least 305037094 more times:)

I don't know what's up with the awards people snubbing Zodiac. Maybe the early release date did hurt the film's chances; that's the only reason I can come up with for what's happening to it now.

I have to read the list that places our Jakey at # 38, and Johhny Depp at that unbelievable number in rank, after I've fortified my blood sugar, with some Ferrero Rocher Diabetic Select. *big grin*
back later.
xoxoxo

Morning everyone :) And it doesn't matter that it's frosty, foggy and chilly because it's the weekend and the holidays!

Hi TL I love this video - someone put this boy on the stage :D I can't stop looking at those pictures either. They'd better be wrong about the release date...

That's a good point Anon, maybe we shouldn't expect so much from some critics. Thanks for commenting :)

Hey Get Real - I love Jake in white t-shirt, jeans and boots :P But those Brothers pics are the ones I want to look at right now. Have a good day - hope it's not too cold where you are.

Morning Sass - Zooey and Jake are so funny together. Jake is a born natural for the stage. Have a good day!

See you all later, I think I have to start my Christmas shopping... :\

WDW, that did put a smile on my face this morning, thank you. What a great day today is here, 40's with snow...good day to get outside. Have a good feeling that 2008 will be something special. Hope you all have an awesome day.

Hi CWG hope you had a great day outta doors. It's dark here now, so all wrapped up with an early glass of wine and some chocolate.

Morning Get Real! Yep it's the Jaking season. I wonder if Jake is doing some last minute Christmas shopping today as well (he's not asked me what I want yet...)

Five thirty p.m. in London, already, very TS Eliot time, hmmm, and Im just moving through the noonday, having had busy morning. And also cstch up with Christmas e-mails. '

Hoped to dream of Jake, thanks to yummy pix, but dreamed of Hilary Clinton, instead. oh well.

Cote D'Or seventy per cent cocoa chocolate is outta this world!

Watched a bit of Donnie Darko production notes with commentary by Postner before bedtime. Postner says: "Jake always delivers. . . "

OK Jake, for Christmas, I just wanna kiss you. . .

Hi, everybody!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Positively Pia! Sorry to hear your dreams were of Hillary and not Jake, hmmm. Better luck tonight. I saw the Director's Cut of Donnie Darko in a store today (Virgon/Zavvi for any Brits out there wanting a copy urgently!!) for just £3.

I think we're going to have to get Jake under the mistletoe and line up :D

Jake and Maggie and Connie and me (A dream)

I dreamed that I was working in a restaurant. I came over to
Jake Gyllenhaal’s table to ask how he had enjoyed his meal,
and struck up a conversation. He was friendly, funny, and
personable His sister Maggie was also with him, and she was
just as friendly and funny. Soon, my sister Connie joined us.
Connie apparently already knew Maggie.

My sister and I had just seen Jake’s new movie, in which he
played a man who had lost a hand. Maggie had been in the
movie, too. Both performances were considered Oscar-caliber.
We talked about Jake’s trip to Africa, and he told us what it was
like there.

The next thing I remember about the dream was that when I
tried to drive away, traffic was backed up for miles, but there
was no actual impediment to their progress.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi CWG :D

What a dream Paulh! I'm glad to hear Jake had given an Oscar calibre performance in the film about a man with one hand. Very good also to hear how kind and funny Jake and Maggie were in the restaurant (must be a good restaurant). The last dream I had about Jake we were both in Brothers and were in the line for food at the canteen.
