A night, among many, to remember

On January 13 this year Jake Gyllenhaal stamped his mark on the archives of Saturday Night Live by recording an opening number that will forever feature on Best of SNL specials and DVDs. I was nervous, I'll admit it, but no need, Jake was sensational and incredible, a huge talent, and his appearance on SNL ranks as the personal moment of the year for several friends here. However, let's be honest, quite a few people had multiple most favourite moments (myself included). One thing though, I find it almost impossible to believe that SNL was almost a year ago. I didn't realise before, but it seems Jake had been scheduled to host SNL before - on 8 May 2004 to be exact. But Jake backed out at the last minute and Snoop Dogg took his place. Whatever the reason, this sounds like destiny because when Jake did appear, making reference to his 'unique fan base' and giving them what he thought they might want, he stole the show left, right and centre.

SNL was a favourite moment for Pia, so I'll shut up and let Pia describe why she chose it: 'Being cant-take-my-eyes-off-him in love with this man for almost a year and naturally interested in his brilliant career, and despite his sis Maggie commenting that he will knock 'em dead, I cannot help but wonder however he's gonna follow Justin Timberlake"s "Dick In A Box". I have no TV so had to sweat it out. a phone call from my friend in Long Island, gay male, in a shocked voice: "OMG he was in drag!" WHUT? ":He was wearing an effing dress!" WHUT? When I saw the program, thank you IHEARTJAKE girls, I was blown away. "You did it, man!" I was so proud of him, and his timing, confidence, joyful presence; sis Maggie knows her lil bro!... I think one of the most amazing things about Jake is that he lets us love him!'

Paulh says: 'For me, the one that blows everything away is the moment when Jake, introducing "Saturday Night Live," quickly removes his suit and tie, revealing a sequined dress. He throws on a wig, and sings, in falsetto, a song from "Dreamgirls." The only other one that comes close is a moment at Cannes, when Jake is on the platform, and he hears his fans chanting "Jake! Jake!" He puts his hand to his ear to show that he hears, and then he points to them with a radiant smile on his face.' Neely loved SNL too - 'This was something special, a side of Jake that we don't often see in his films.' It's also on Christie's list: 'Saturday Night Live - just because it was so daring and so much fun! And it showed how well Jake could sing.' Sounds like good reasons to me.

Another fan was David Fincher. In his interview with Jake for October's Interview, David said: 'By the way, I finally saw your SNL which I thought was awesome- balls-out one of the funniest moments I've seen on that show in a long time. Jake: Thanks. I figured, if you're going to do it, then really do it. David: Well, you did it, and now no one ever has to do it again. (Both laugh) Somebody sent it to me on DVD because I missed it and everyone was talking about it. ..Jake:...They played the song, we practised it a couple times, and Lorne came up to me and said "You should do this in drag. What do you think?" And I was like 'Fantastic!" And that was it.'

In the New York Post, SNL's Musical Director Katreese Barnes revealed that Jake's appearance on SNL is one of the very reasons why she has a dream job. 'Saturday night, when the sketches come together, can be really magical. Like when Jake Gyllenhaal performed his version of the “Dreamgirls” song - that was a really rewarding moment for me. It was a Thursday night when he had the idea to sing the song, and they called me down to rehearse with him. On Friday, we brought in some backup singers, and he started gaining more confidence, and then by Saturday night he blew me away.'

Ooh where did that photo come from... (my favourite sketch from the night - after the opener). Renowned journalist Diane Sawyer, who went a little giddy when she interviewed Jake as part of the Zodiac promotion in the Spring, said that Jake's SNL performance had had quite an effect on her - in fact, it made her fall out of bed.

Top ten terror list

411movies has voted Zodiac as no 2 in its Top Ten Terrors of 2007 (behind Grindhouse). 'The inclusion of this entry was a little obvious. While not horror in the strictest sense, Zodiac is one of the best movies of the year in it's own right. It features a story that is a great one about a killer that was never caught. It shows the killer do his thing and it shows the ongoing investigation to find out who is doing this. The tagline is very fitting, "There's more than one way to lose your life to a killer" because that is what happens here. Everyone involved in the investigation is affected in some way, some more than others. Without credible actors there is no way this could have worked. It's a good thing David Fincher knows what he's doing, because we get very credible actors. Jake Gyllenhaal comes through and Robert Downey Jr provides his usual great performance. Everyone involved with this movie does a tremendous job and it provides one of the best experiences of this year. While the length does work against it, the pacing and story draw you in and tries it's hardest to keep you from getting bored. You may check your watch, but you'll never stop being entertained by the show. Zodiac isn't just good horror, it's good cinema.'

Pictures of Jake

Some more outtakes from the Esquire photoshoot have emerged, including one that, although Jake has again been airbrushed to witin an inch of his life, is so beautiful.

On 8 December, Jake was photographed while out on Pier 39 with Reese and her family. As someone who loves San Francisco, I have to say that I had a superb cocktail or three on Pier 39 while watching the sealions. For a better look, enjoy the live webcam - one of my favourite webcams on the entire net.

Reasons to be grateful

A paparazzi video of Tobey Maguire emerged from the other night when he was out in Los Angeles having a break from filming Brothers. The haircut on him is distinctly jarheady and yet again makes me relieved that Jake is the 'Other Brother'. I much prefer Jake with a hairy chin than with a heairless head...

Well, that was lovely to relive that SNL show...and I can see why it was Pia's favourite and on paulh and Christie's lists.

Jake really showed how he can have a laugh, and I tell you, if that man wanted a singing career, I think he could have one!

He is naturally funny and that came across loud and clear in that show. Like you, WDW I can hardly believe that was nearly a year ago!

I can see that everytime we get someone's favourite...I'm going to be thinking...why didn't I pick that one...the truth is, there were so many highlights...I loved them ALL.

Those new Esquire pics are to die for too! That second pic you posted, Jake with his hand in his pocket and rubbing his chin is so GORGEOUS! There are some really nice one's there. Thank you!

Hi Rosie - I just wish the clip itself were still out there but it got nabbed :( But almost a year ago and it's as vivid as ever. I love the Esquire pics, so much, but paticularly the close up with Jake wearing the suit - an amazing expression. I could look at it all evening - maybe I will ;)

Gah, love the SNL bit! Jake sang his heart out and looked fierce in that dress! ;p One of my fave moments of the year by far. I also loved the Bronx Beat and Law&Order sketches.

Wow, more beautiful pictures. *Sigh*

I am glad we have a new pic of Jake with Reese and the kids out there! :)

I am so looking forward to Brothers.

Hi Get Real - oh that's true, I liked the Law n Order sketch too and the polar bear suits would be good at this time of year ;)

First of all, thanks for the updates and the great work you do on a regular basis wdw! :)
I love the new pics, but still prefer Jakey w/o beard.
Now something disappointing, the SAGs didn't nominate Zodiac for anything and that's bad because that means there probably won't be any Oscar nom's either, since SAG noms are pretty much identical to the Oscar noms. :(
I'm still glad Zodiac was on so many top 10 of the year lists. A great film that would have been more noticed if it was released in fall or winter.
I hope Jake will be more lucky with his upcoming movies. I wish him the best of luck for his upcoming projects. :)

Hi Anon - thanks for commenting and the kind words :) And to be trivial for a moment - as is my wont pretty frequently - yes, better without the beard although I do love those pics very much.

The industry should be ashamed of itself for the way that Zodiac has been neglected - even partly intentionally by the film's own studio. he fact that so many critics have revealed this month that they haven't forgotten it, that Zodiac is a film to remember serves as some compensation. I would like David Fincher (and Jake) to have the awards he deserves for his vision and detail. I can feel a rant coming on...! I hope that Jake will have that fortune and luck as well, he certainly has the talent by the bucketload.

I love Jake's Dreamgirls performance, great choice! Love how you all describe it too :) I didn't have a clue what to expect from SNL, being a Brit and never having watched it, but nothing could have prepared me for the sight of Jake looking so damn hot,in a DRESS!!! And singing his heart out too, he sure can belt out a tune. I just love that clip, I'm always gobsmacked by it, not to mention doubled up with laughter, every single time. I loved the Bronx Beat clip too, although it's a bit worrying just how much I identify with the two women in it!

Thanks for the Esquire pics! A bit too much airbrushing going on for me too - why mess with perfection? the second and fourth ones are to die for though *swoon*

Hi TL - I know what you mean, I wasn't expecting Jake to look like that either - but woth those arms. I showed the clip to some non-Jake friends (I have a couple) and they were just as impressed. Jake did himself proud that night - not a trace of nerves.

Definitely too much airbrushing, I agree. Strangely, I don't care much for the second one. Don't know why.

Great to re-live that SNL barn-stormer,WDW, not surprised that it was a popular choice as "Jake Moment of the Year",although, as Rosie said, there were just so many absolute corkers this year we're spoilt for choice! A rousing rendition of a fabulous song, how come he still looks sexy in a dress and comedy wig?! Must be those fabulous biceps!

And those "Esquire" pictures! Okay,so Jake doesn't need to be tampered with (although I'd volunteer for the job any day!),but they are some damn photos. Is it me, or do his eyes in No.1 and No.3 have such an intensity, it's almost as if he's actually looking right at you in a soulful,knock-em-dead kind of way?! Works for me!

Hey Nadine, good to see you!

WDW, that second pic, he's doing his "naughty boy trying to look innocent" look, which turns me to mush. And I couldn't help noticing, it looks like the middle bit of his belt has been pulled out slightly (or not put back on properly!) which is putting all kinds of possible scenarios in my mind;)

Anonymous said...

Hey TL,good to see you too! See what you mean about the belt...looks like someone beat me to the "Tampering" job! Bugger!

ITA, about some of the Esquire pics being over airbrushed. Not needed when you have the beauty of Jake. I really like the ones that are not close up. Hard to imagine that I would be saying that, lol. But they airbrushed his face...WTF?!?! Don't mess with perfection!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Great to see you Nadine :D Jake's biceps were definitely some of the biggest stars of the year... The eyes are exactly what attracts me in those pictures, stunning :D I hope you're getting ready for a holiday breather *)

Hey TL You noticed the belt then ;) Sounds like you may be in for some good dreams with those scenarios! I think I find the pose too staged or awkward. So I'll go for the first one because of the eyes :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I know Get Real - Jake is one person who definitely needs no airbrushing and I hate it when it happens, it just distracts.

twistedlogic said...

Glad it's not just me who noticed the belt thing! I swear I wasn't looking at that area delibeartely, it just kinda jumped out at me - honest!!!
We'll have to agree to disagree WDW - I don't find the pic any more staged than usual (bearing in mind all photoshoot pics are posed anyway).I see where you're coming from with it being awkward but I think that's part of the coy, teasing look he does so well so well, Sexy devil that he is!! I agree with Get Real, I like the not so close up ones best here cos the totally unnecessary airbrushing isn't so obvious :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL - I do like different pictures evoke different reactions even though they all have the same adorable subject :D Yes, so agree to disagree here. You're definitely right that all photoshoot pics are staged - I've sometimes wonderered how long these shoots take and how Jake likes them... Love to be a fly on the wall at one of them!

I think it's g'night from me. Friday tomorrow! And then the hols!! Have a good night :D

chillinwitgyllen said...

I can longer contain myself to any bit of respect...I want Jake in bed with me right now, hot and steamy and sexy all of him, i need that man now!

Sorry WDW, he does this to me. Delete only if you don't feel the same way :)

It's funny, I was watching a documentary about U2 last night, which showed them doing a few photoshoots from The Joshua Tree days, and they looked so bored, Bono even said that was why they always look so grim in their pics, cos they're so bored! So credit to Jake for managing to NEVER look even remotely grim in his pics, even though he's probably bored out of his mind! I wouldn't mind being a fly on the wall at one of Jake's photoshoots either - assuming I couldn't be his wardrobe technician, or whatever you call the person with the enviable job of adjusting his belt, shirt buttons,etc...;)
And on that note..Night WDW, and everyone else, speak to you tomorrow:)

twistedlogic said...

Hey CWG! Lol,I reckon you speak for us all! PS:The back of the queue's a couple of miles down the road;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh TL - I missed that :( - you know how much I love U2. I was too busy drinking Jake's health. Belt adjustor - another job going. So now we have a Toucher, Retoucher, Tamperer and Adjustor... Hmmm. Gonna have to get some job descriptions sorted out so we can sort out who's doing what...

Hey CWG - I'm actually asleep right now and this is a dream... :D

chillinwitgyllen said...

WDW and TL, I reckon this is a dream and it will all be over by tomorrow right? Not!!!!!

I was thinking something more along the lines of XXX porno but I decided to keep that to myself and let the lot of you dream on :)
Use you're own imagination which I'm sure you already have ;)

chillinwitgyllen said...

I'll go into detail if you'd like!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

G'night CWG and TL - thanks for leaving that unstated and to the imagination, CWG :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Er no thanks CWG - best to keep that to the imagination...

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW, that U2 thing wasn't on telly, it's on a dvd that comes with the new 20th Anniversary Joshua Tree boxset (early Xmas present!) I think I mentioned it to you in an email recently? Anyway, I know there are a few U2 fans here, so I definitely recommend putting it on your Xmas list to Santa, alongside whatever version of Jake you've asked him for this year;)

CWG, don't you worry, there's no reins on my imagination where Jake's concerned- He's Mr Martini Man- anytime, anyplace, anywhere (although the lift in Cannes is a personal favourite ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh yes, I remember, sorry TL, brain overload and too tired at the moment. Off to bed, just trying to make sure it's safe to leave!

twistedlogic said...

No! Don't go yet, check your email! ;D

OMG - TL - Gold star to you!! Checked email - everyone RUN to the new post....
