Jake supports the strike - Jake and family on the Brokeback red carpet

Despite the Golden Globes ignoring Zodiac, and despite the Golden Globes not nominating a certain young actor for his portrayal of Jack Twist, Jake Gyllenhaal was to have been a presenter at the awards that were due to have taken place next Sunday at the Beverly Hilton hotel. But like so many other actors, Jake was one of those who refused to cross a picket line of writers - not so surprising, not least because of the occupation of Jake's mother Naomi Foner.

It was good to see a picture of Jake with Naomi yesterday and, thinking of Jake and his family, here is a video of Jake at the LA premiere of another great film - Brokeback Mountain. Looking for all the world like this was recorded after the showing of the film, here you can see an emotional looking Maggie, Peter and Stephen congratulating Jake on what must have been quite an experience to watch - both triumph and ordeal. Proud Stephen has a camera and looks keen to capture this event.

For further atmosphere of a 'Jake red carpet' watch this fan film of Jake at the Brokeback premiere; it's just like being there.

David Fincher's Zodiac Triumph

But, I'm still in a Zodiac mood and, thanks to IHJ, here are screencaps of one of my favourite moments from the making of documentary - here you can see what it's like to do 36 takes of a seemingly simple scene. Despite all the stories that came from the set about Jake complaining about the number of takes (and the rage he jokes about in the commentary during one scene), there is ample evidence here that there were good times, even if they could be frustrating. Judging by the documentary, one would be forgiven for thinking that Jake giggled his way through the shoot. This is what Jake is like when he finally nails it (followed by a picture of what Jake's like when he's been told he hasn't...).

David Fincher is keen, and rightly so, to do all he can to promote this new DVD. As a result, David has been doing some interviews. This one is with CHUD. I do like how David asks the interviewer at the end if he's seen the DVD and if he likes the Arthur Leigh Allen features. This is fascinating stuff and this is such an interesting interview. When asked about the release date (obviously not his choice), David says:

'I'm the last person to ask about that stuff. Would I have liked to have seen it out last year? Yeah. At the time the prevailing wisdom was, it's a very crowded market place, we don't have enough time to get really really good materials and put them in place to sell this movie at the end of 2006. We said okay, if you don't think you have the time to do as good a job as you think you can do... it's the same thing with me, I don't want the studio coming to me and saying, 'We know you say you need 26 weeks to finish this, but really we want to give you six.' That doesn't serve anybody's best interest. At the end of 2006 both studios felt like the best place was what we later heard referred to as the dumping ground of March [laughs]. You agree to this stuff and then you hear somebody go, 'Wow, they're dumping your movie in March?' You go, 'Well... yeah... I guess so.'

And on the controversial (but never long enough) length: 'You could do it as something compressed, where you get the gist of it, and we would have shots of Jake [Gyllenhaal] half asleep and you would have those obligatory shots where the boss says, 'You look like shit.' And in the end I still don't feel like you get enough of what happens with his family, we don't get enough with his wife and kids, but it was all we could do to get it in at under two hours and forty minutes. I feel like we took about as much time as you can really expect an audience to sit still for and we tried to make them feel what it was like to be invested in this circuitous run down the rabbit hole.'

Everyone agrees that cinematographer Harry Savides did an amazing job with Zodiac - just look at the film - and it's so interesting to hear David say that Harry was extremely suspicious of this new digital technology: 'He was happy with it. I mean, it's hard to gauge with Harris. Part of his humor comes from being the guy where you're not going to hear about what's amazing, you're going to hear about what's totally fucked up. He's harder on himself than he is on anybody else, but he's never going to say, 'I love it,' he's going to say, 'It's totally fucked up. I wish I had never gotten out of bed. I wish I had never answered the call.' Look, I think his assessment of it is absolutely correct: this technology is in its infancy. We're not talking about it walking, we're talking about can it hold its head up. We're at that stage.'

The reviews of the Zodiac DVD are excellent and abundant. I particularly liked this one from Filmjerk. This is a great review and, even though they were not fans of Jake or Anthony Edwards before (why ever not?), they were won over: 'Jake Gyllenhaal and Anthony Edwards... well, frankly, I could do with or without either of them, and Mark Ruffalo bugs the living daylights out of me, yet here they are, not only not annoying me but keeping me vested in the story. There is nary a misstep when it comes to the acting. Every role seems to be perfectly cast, although I guess that is what happens when you surround yourself with actors like Brian Cox, John Getz, Philip Baker Hall, Elias Koteas, Donal Logue, John Carroll Lynch and Dermot Mulroney.'

And finally

Maggie is busy again. On 16 January, Maggie will be the 'very special guest' at a night of literature to raise money for a children's writing centre in Brooklyn. The event will take place at 2537 Broadway (at 95th Street).

Includes pictures from IHJ.

I got the DVD in the post today! I got the DVD today!!! *grinning like an idiot*

thanks for the Brokeback video... never seen it before.

i don't understand what the DVD reviewer is on about, when he tried to find reason why Jake and Anthony Edward did so well:

I guess that is what happens when you surround yourself with actors like Brian Cox, John Getz, Philip Baker Hall, Elias Koteas, Donal Logue, John Carroll Lynch and Dermot Mulroney.'

Dermot Mulroney??? hello!!?! have you ever seen him in "My Best Friend's wedding"? I mean.. he's good in Zodiac, but it's more like because he's in the company of all the actors & Jake & Anthony Edward!

back to Zodiac heaven... :)

Thanks for recommedating playusa to me, sweetie.

He should have been a presenter? Pity, now we won't have new Jake presenting pics. But i understand he has to support the writers.
Glad that the Zodiac dvd reviews are positive!
Thanks for the updates!:)

Hey Winterbird - you got it already! Well enjoy - I know you absolutely will :D That was the guy in my Best Friend's Wedding??? That never connected until now - blimey ;) I love the Brokeback video so much! Enjoy the film/commentary/extras...

Hi Anon - thanks for that! It would have been lovely to see Jake presenting but I'm glad he's there with the cause. Let's wait and see what happens with the Oscars.

I've done my homework WDW, and watched the 'making of Zodiac' doc . Mr R is now engrossed in the special effects doc.

Wow, Fincher really is the guy to make a movie about obsession! He's the expert. Cementing trees into the ground to make the lake scene look right; having full accurate editions of the Chronicle printed make a pile on the office set, having fabric made up to exactly what the real-life character was wearing at the time. :)

I was put out to learn though that the Washington/Cherry scenes weren't actually filmed on Washington/Cherry but on a blue screen set. Upset because Madame X drove me and Mr R to that location on our visit to SF last year :( No wonder we couldn't figure out exactly which corner it was in the movie. :)

Thanks for the clips of the Brokeback premier et al. All Jake red carpets have the same soundtrack - (mostly) female voices shouting 'Jake. Jake' over and over. Yeah, I know, 'been there, done that' :D Wonder what it's like having people shout your name out repeatedly... :/

Ruby - glad you saw that - I'm about to watch it again as I get set to relax. Fincher is extraordinary. I've seen the film before of the blue screens for the taxi driver murder but I had no idea it was filmed completely away from that area - because of disgruntled residents. I didn't realise you went up there (I did like the picture of you outside the Chronicle :) )

David Fincher is an expert on obsession and Jake and the others had to pay for that for a while, but as the commentary says - David can take his pick of actors and I can see why.

Even though that was a red carpet without us, the BBM premiere was still so evocative! Hearing that! Jake's heard that for a while now, must be strange but he knows what to do. Of course, now and again, there might be people who yell out something else, something to do with Jack Nasty for instance ;) Jake's name was made to be cried out at red carpets - it has a ring to it :D

Didn't Jake once say, "man, i'm never gonna make another movie about obsession"? :P

Problem is, Jake's so good at roles like this!

I was amused by Jake telling David that he was exhausted after just finishing a movie (Jarhead) and David had said to him - Don't worry, you'll be an extra for the first half of the film - and then it was all shot out of order!

Love those BBM red carpet videos, thank you:) I can't believe how close he was to the camera in the second one! There's no way I would survive that!
Good for Jake for supporting the writers strike (the longer it goes on the more scenes they'll need us to write for them;)

Off to watch Zodiac now with added Jake/RDJ:) Although seeing that pic of Jake draped over the car seat, I'm wondering if I should check that out first;D

Jake has a beautiful name to shout out, esp. for those who love him!

I do notice that he gets frequent brief back rubs - from sister Maggie and others - Im sure he needs reassuring touch during public appearances. Maggie and Peter do quite a bit of this, it seems.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL - I know it's tempting but go for the commentary first as you'll get the whole movie and you'll be in such a mood for the extras - say up all night if you have to ;) Roll on the weekend...

Good point about the strike - they're gonna need us and we have plenty of ideas on how to 'improve' Brothers and Giant Leap (or UMP as I prefer to call it). You would be great if you saw Jake like that - you'd love it and remember it forever. Next time Jake's in London I'm dragging you along!

Pia - it's a beautiful name and it was an ambition of mine - a deep ambition - to say it to Jake's face and I did, on more than one occasion, and no wonder I'm a Jake gusher now! Jake gets back rubs by the dozen and I suspect he gives them too. Stephen is also a very tactile person - these Gyllenhaals like to be in contact with those who love and appreciate them.

The sad news is I'm out of red wine. The good news is I've found a bottle of gin. The even better news is that the Zodiac DVD seems to have turned itself on again...

Just when I think there isn't anything new about Brokeback mountain you show us something I haven't seen before. I love how Maggie is rubbing her brother's back in support. How he and Maggie and Peter are so close. And how Jake comes out to his fans to sign autographs.

And I like all the Zodiac stuff too

Oh and I also understand him not being a presenter. The Golden Globe awards are cancelled in any case. They are just going to have an hour long show just announcing the winners.

It was like that for the People's choice awards. Queen Latifah was hosting, stood on stage, there were past moments being shown on a large screen. Then the nominee's names and scenes from their work then the winner was named. A taped acceptance speech was shown and that was it. No audience no presenters.

Hi Trekfan - This is such a great video - I'm glad yu liked it. And I love to see the support Jake received from Maggie, Peter and everyone else. The Golden Globes is going to be odd, that's for sure. Last year I stayed in that hotel the day after the awards and they let me in to look round the ballroom - so strange to think of what had happened in there the night before with Jake there etc. And this year, nothing. But I can definitely see why and one has to see the wider picture. Be interesting to see what'll happen with the Oscars. Also good to see so many British actors supporting the strike too, such as Keira Knightly.

WDW, thanks for talking me through my pc crisis. I expect it will be ongoing so I won't risk playing the vid just yet.

What winterbird said about Jake and Anthony Edwards (though I am a big fan of Brian Cox).

Ruby, it'd be like this:

Big hi to pia as I completely missed the Naomi post - glad you got the Roberta Sparrow joke :D *

Anonymous said...

Thack you WDW I appreciate the sympathy. I need some Stode's Gidger Wide, where can I get some at this time of night?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Anouska *) You're talking some very strange language here: 'Stode's Gidger Wide' - what on earth is that?? I think you may be talking about a drink I've never heard of, which puts me at a disturbing disadvantage - I didn't think there was such a thing... Whatever it is, I hope you get some, lots of it :)

Anonymous said...

Try saying it out loud :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ahhhh! I think I get you now... Well, I hope you get some ;)

WDW: That site is incorrect, Jake Hillary Swank and Hayden were presenters at last years GG awards, so I doubt they would ask the same back.

When the WGA stick started in Oct., the industry knew that the award season would be affected, so they never officially asked any one to be a presenter.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - Thanks for the comment. Definitely sunds like a bit of a coincidence, but who knows? Jake and other actors have presented at awards ceremonies more than one year in a row.

O gosh get the girl with a nasty code some Stode's Gidger Wide. And some whiskey. (feel better soon, Anouska!)

G'night Pia! What an evening, more DVD extras, a G&T and some good company here :D

Finally, I get here after going all over looking for my DVD. Tomorrow, at Borders,it's mine, finally!

Good on you Jake supporting the writers on strike and your mom:)
I'm so happy when you post video clips I haven't seen. I love hearing the fans chant Jake, Jake Jake.
I would, in all my Gyllen-Geriatric glory, embarrass the heck out of myself and chant Jake Jake Jake right along with the rest of the fans.:lol

It looks like Jake had more time pre-BBM, to say a word or two and to make eye contact with his fans when he signed autographs.

He has so many more fans now.Sometimes, he can barely look up or talk as he goes from fan to fan,but he is always sweet and polite to everyone.

I noticed the family Gyllenbackrub too. I see Reese likes rubbing the Gyllen's back too, lucky girl:) *sigh*

I think Dermot Mulroney is married with Katherine Keener(sp?), the older woman from Lovely and Amazing. So all are friends of Jake's.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone :)

Morning Sass! I hope you get the DVD OK today :D Glad you like the videos, nothing wrong with chanting Jake, Jake! I seem to recall I might have done that myself once or twice ;)

Hi Anon :D What a small world! I seem to say that an awful lot but yet again it's true. He was actually in Lovely & Amazing too wasn't he, now I come to think of it?

Have a good day everyone :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi all :) Made it home after such a long journey back (3 and a half hours) - motorway shut with me on it :( I need some red stuff... Everyone had/having a good day?

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hey WDW,have you got yourself outside a good red yet? After such a gruelling journey home, you deserve a drink. Mind you,I only have to drive for 10 minutes max to get home from work, but if I didn't have a killer case of heartburn I think I'd be hitting the scotch tonight!

Your long trek has obviously delayed you in posting tonight (congrats on your dedication and stamina that you usually post at least once every day, come what may!) - that's given me chance to catch up on last night's post, which was great, especially the videos of BBM premiere Jake(one of my favourite flavours!).

I've had a few close encounters with bands/actors at the stage door in the dim and distant past, even got invited in to soundchecks etc and one great strictly-non-groupie type back-stage party at one really special gig. The second vid of Jake signing for the fans (and saying "thankyou" in that warm, languid, genuine fashion) brought all those stomach-lurching,adrenalin pumping,"pinch myself I can't believe it", try-to-hold-on-to-the-memory moments right back to me. Those long ago thrill-a-thons were fabulous enough - to have that kind of experience with Jake would be just too mind-blowing for words,as you would know, you lucky girl!

I love the family shots at the premiere too,all present so obviously proud and supportive of their boy - and rightly so. Stephen can hardly contain it,can he,so determined to catch his own personal photos of the occasion. I love the fact that Jake's family so patently adore him,and he them, warts and all, and they're not afraid to let it show. And how cute are Maggie's dimples?!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Nadine - I've had quite a night - I've needed to calm down from it. But I've just put a post up :) Those videos are wonderful - they just take me right back to those amazing times when for a few moments it's simply you and Jake in front of you (oh and a few people screaming Jake, Jake! as well :D)

I'm ready for another glass of red and some soothing TV - hmmm, maybe another section of the Zodiac DVD. Thanks for thinking of me, Nadine. It's been a difficult day.
