Tonight the Golden Globes takes place, although as a press conference and not as a glamorous and very tipsy cermemony and meal at the Beverly Hilton. As the Globes failed to give Zodiac any recognition whatsoever, I'm not above a spot of petulance and I'll admit to not feeling too bothered by its downgrading. During the promotion of Rendition, Jake Gyllenhaal was asked if he was affected by this lack of recognition or by relatively low box-office takings: 'Y’know, creative expectations should be high, the results of those expectations should be low,... I hope people want to see these movies, but the focus should be on the fun you had doing it. I learned that from Brokeback Mountain. We made it for hardly anything and it earned about $200-million worldwide. That was just kind of nice.'
Elsewhere in the interview (with Bob Strauss), Jake talks about what influences him as a moviestar in Hollywood and what the term 'hero' means to him, with reference to Rendition: 'We’re all obsessed, at least in the movie industry, with doing ‘the right thing.’ Making movies about people who do the right thing — or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, people who don’t do the right thing and pay the consequences of doing the wrong thing. That’s the spectrum within which we work... But what I’m interested in in this movie is that I have a character who witnesses the torture. He doesn’t do the right thing, he just does the thing that makes sense. To me, that’s what it’s about. You create heroes, whatever your idea of a hero is. But heroes don’t exist. Human beings exist, and that’s what fascinates me about this movie.'
One gets the impression that Jake has grown surrounded by creative influences and pulls on his conscience, maybe not of all of which tugged him in the same direction: 'There are five people in my family who are all in that world... You really get a great perspective from that… Some really believe in something that others don’t. You just get tons of input, and it’s wonderful.'
A small price to pay to be the girl in the middle
Thanks to IHJ as always for providing new/old pictures of Jake at this time of drought. These pictures were taken in NYC in September 2006 and I remember the amusement at the time that two such strapping lads were letting the girl carry a box the size of a small car. Admittedly, Jake does have his hands full (sort of) and, of course, it could very well have been her choice but I know I'd have handed it over in the time it took to complete the sentence 'Jake, you've been shaving your legs again'.
Meanwhile, Jake's friend/assistant was fortunate enough to have dinner this time with Jake's other friend, the gorgeous and massively talented Adam Levine from Maroon 5.
Includes pictures from IHJ and Just Jared.

thanks for Sunday post. my dinner date just cancelled so I can watch me some David Fincher, evem though he is definitely a diffrent personality type from myself.
"five people in my family" - am I missing someone? his uncle anders maybe? Id like to know who each one of these is backing in the USAan primaries. I hear Susan Sarandon has come out for Obama. Betcha MamaheartsHillary.
Jake with that beard, I dunno, I dont wanna kiss him as much. But I love the biceps in the other pics.
Hi Pia - a date with Fincher, eh? I'm about to have one of those too. Anders is a good bet unless Jake means one of those godfathers of his. I could make up for the kissing, cos I find Jake completely kissable with or without the hairy face. I like the grin that goes with it here as well :D Those biceps... There's something about Jake's arms that's for sure.
The primaries are getting some coverage in the London papers, but I feel pretty ignorant. I have a bias towards Hillary simply because I saw her in my local supermarket and I once hugged Bill. Possibly, not a good reason ;)
"five people in my family" - am I missing someone?
Peter?? :)
Hi Pia, Hi WDW
The strong lady in the pictures is the same brunette who is regularly seen with Jake, most recently in the New Year in Joan's on Third.
^^This phrase seems unclear to me.
Are you implying that the lady with the box (isn't she Greta Carusso?) is the same with the older lady at the restaurant?
You hugged "Bill".
You were thrust against Jake by a heaving crowd.
You kissed Rupert Graves.
I may have to hate you.
*
Hey
I love how Jake said he had fun making Brokeback. It is important that you have fun on the job and for an actor to say he had fun says alot.
One think, I have to respectfully disagree. I don't think that brunette is the same woman Jake has been seen with at Joans. She looks younger and if I am not mistaken she is David Caruso's daughter.

Dated Oct 19th, 2006 Jake out and about with friend in NYC.
Trekfan
I agree with the consensus, the box girl is Greta.
Anon I'm not implying anything and I don't understand your sentence. I think (but I may be wrong) that this is the same lady who was with Jake in Joan's on the 3rd or round abouts. I've no idea of any names and I don't know what 'older lady' you're referring to.
Hey Ruby - No we already counted Peter! :D
Hi Trekfan and Anouska! Of course you two do realise that I get everybody muddled up and can just about recognise Meryl Streep and that's about it ;) Hence the fact that everytime I've posted a picture of an actress here (bar Maggie), such as one of the Jessicas, it's always been the wrong one!
:D Not infallible? Wot are we paying for? :*
Unlike cooking, pattern recognition is a strength of mine :D
Amended post :D
Hey Anouska - missed your earlier comment - I've also kissed Billy Bragg ;) (and don't get me started on my Tom Hanks experience...)
Anouska I've not kissed Richard Hammond though :(
Anouska - shhhh, we get this stuff for free, don't give her ideas. She'll stick a Paypal button on the blog. :D
Is Jake not counting himself as one of the five then or am I being dumb? : /
Hmmm, don't give me ideas Ruby!
.... OMG YOU CRACKED IT!! Jake must be referring to himself - Jake, Maggie, Peter, Mum, Dad! You are the master/mistress of tests, you Ruby Graysmith you :D
Well that's who I assumed he meant by 5, yes!! :D
Totally off topic but I have to 'squeeeee' loudly at the Torchwood trailer I just saw! Not just the return of the gorgeous Captain Jack, but it has James Marsters (Spike) in it and he's wearing a redcoat uniform! :D
You and Jake have better counting skills than me and Anouska's good at visual tests... I reckon I'm gonna go off and crawl under the bedcovers with the Zodiac DVD :D
Who's Spike? I see Torchwood is on Wednesday - I've still not seen the end of the last series...
"Who's Spike?"
You are not a Buffy/Angel fan then? :D
Errr... Never seen either of them ;) Hangs head in shame...
It's not like you get the TIME, WDW ***
Ruby, Angel belongs with Bones, not Buffy. There, I've said it.
I'm not surprised by what Jake says about box office, etc. I'm sure no one involved in the film thought it would be a huge box office hit but,as we're seeing with Zodiac now, it will hopefuly get more recognition with time. Btw, I was checking various sites for the Rendition DVD and playuk now have it due for release on 17th March and Amazon 24th March! What is going on?! I need that DVD like, yesterday!:(
I remember the box pics too and I'm still none the wiser as to why Jake wasn't carrying it.I can't believe a nice boy like Jake wouldn't have offered and I know I wouldn't have hesitated to hand it over. Weird. And why oh why would Jake shave his legs? well, I guess it's to do with his cycling, but it detracts from his sexiness. Jake, the only part of your body you should ever shave is your face!
Is it just me, or does it seem like ages since we saw Jake out on his bike? I can live with the shaved legs if they're wrapped in spandex;D
Jake is counting himself as a creative influence?
he's pretty good at counting himself in, I guess, I notice he feels free to question decisions made in films, such as why Graystone was included in first conference regarding Zodiac letter. Go, Jake! Dont take any shit from anybody! That's my boy!
I didnet know WDW you were THRUST AGAINST JAKE BY THE CROWD. OMG!
Love to watch RobtDJr., and my doesnt Mark R have great hair! and "hung like a horse" surely I misheard this. . .
Jake comments on how Greystone is like a kid in his excitements. Wish they could have worked into the film Graystone's collection of Big Little books of Dick Tracy. Jake does the scene when Robert meets Toshi in the theatre lobby so well -
Time for Sunday night supper.
well that's that then. Anouska finally lost her one remaining marble. : / :-*
I gave up on Bones after the first season.
Hi TL - I wish that PlayUSA would get Rendition up as I can't wait until the end of March for the UK version!
Jake with shaved legs... I am so glad he stopped doing that, although I can understand why cyclists do it. Better he stick with the running :D Although I do miss the spandex, that's for sure.
Hey Pia I never heard the Mark E horse comment :D Although he does have lovely hair. I liked RDJ referring to Robert Graysmith as Bobbie Gray.
In the documentary, have you seen that sweet bit where Jake is telling David that he's good at inserts ('aren't I?') My heart melts.
Anouska and Ruby - you are so talking a foreign language... Bones? What on earth is that?!
Blogger Wet Dark and Wild said...

LOL well at least I am not the only one with a swiss cheese memory. I had to look online last night to get the actresses name who plays in Narnia. (I was watching that last night, then I saw Two Hands after that)
Trekfan
Yes WDW sweetie you're very good at inserts: and when and where did you hug our sexy "Bill"? ? ?
Anouska touched J's jacket sleeve, I think, right, mon?
Trekfan - I always get the Narnia actress muddled up with Cate Blanchett!
Pia I've seen Bill three times and once he was out jogging. He stopped to chat to people for some time and I had my picture taken giving him a hug :D
Yep, Anouska touched The Sleeve :D I understand that Jake has not washed that jacket since its encounter :)
Tilda Swinton. :)
(Narnia)
Just finished watching Zodiac with Jake and RDJ's commentary:) Wish I didn't have to get up in the morning so I could stay up and watch the film properly, as I haven't seen the extra bits in context yet:( I have to say I don't recall anything about Mark Rufffalo being hung like a horse but if it was one of the other three who said it then I probably missed it cos I have to admit my mind did wander a bit during those bits, waiting impatiently for more Jake and RDJ. I wish it could've just been those two,or with Mark Ruffalo too, but I'm just greedy where Jake's concerned;)
Hey TL - I'm watching/listening to it too (it's the Dirty Harry scene). That would have been great to have had another commentary just with the actors - I could listen to Jake giggling and commenting all day :D It would have been good to get some interaction with Mark and Tony Edwards too. G'night *)
Morning WDW... we had a great time at the BBM screening in london yesterday, finally met Rosie who frequent here as well, I believe :)
Wish you were there! but I know... getting back is a pain.
Lovely post again :) and yeah, first thing I noticed was "Omg...the biceps!", second thing was "two muscled guys letting the poor girl holding the big box", but who knows maybe it's her wedding gown inside and you know women won't let anyone else touch that! lol... btw, that Jake's assistant, is she David Caruso's daughter?
Having a grandchild aged 21 months I wonder if Jake is not counting in Ramona among those members of his family who are inspiring him?
Morning everyone - it too me over 4 and a half hours to get to work this morning so I'm now pumping coffee intravenously into my veins... What a start to the week :(
Hi Winterbird - I'm so glad you had such an amazing time. I had a lovely long email from Rosie telling me all about it. I'm sorry I couldn't go.
Maybe she was two distracted by having a hunk either side of her to realise she was carrying a box??
Good to see you Herman - That's a good point - Ramona could be the most inspirational of them all :D
There could be many explanations the first beeing; there is a THIRD hunk inside the box :-D
The second is even worse; she didn't know how to chose between those hunks, so she denied offers to carry the packet from them that, of course, were given simultaneously ;-/
The third possible explanation is perhaps the worst; she told the boys: It is my JOB to carry things for you, so don't even try to take that away from me ;-(
Morning all
Sorry you had such a lousy commute. :(
Okay, I hope this clears up some confusion. The girl carrying the box is definitely Greta Caruso (actor David Caruso's daughter). This was established back when Jake was seen with her in NYC last year. The girl in the pic with Adam Levine and with Jake in Joan's On Third is not Greta. I don't know her name but you can see other pics of her with Jake at various times (like in Cannes) and they aren't the same person. I think the girl with Adam/Jake in Joan's.. is PR.
Hope that makes some sense. :p
And I agree with you WDW, I would have handed Jake or Chris that box real fast, lol. They are strapping boys with biceps after all...hehehe. ;p
Gyllenquotes are the best! Knowing what we know of Jake I wouldn't put him past it for him to mean Ramona as the fifth family member, lol. I am sure she has influence over the whole family! :)
Thought you all would love this. Just found this lovely YouTube clip of all this years best movies put to the "Once" song "Falling Slowly". For those of you who haven't seen the movie I think you will fall in love with the music from this. There is a clip of Jake and RDJ from "Zodiac". Enjoy!
^^ Also has a clip of Jake and Chloe.
Hi Herman - Yes, they must have offered and she put her foot down. I still think she forgot she was carrying it ;)
Hey Get Real A lousy start to the day that's true enough :( This is so funny with the girl :D Now I'm pretty sure the one with Adam is not the girl in Cannes or the BAFTAs (as I've seen her myself a few times and am pretty sure what she looks like) but I think she was the girl in Toronto ;) I love a puzzle :)
Ahhh the biceps.... :P
I get so much pleasure from Gyllenquotes, I really do. Have a good day *)
Thanks for the clip Get Real - Can't wait to see/hear that when I get home - I still haven't heard this song.
So she wasn't Cannes girl? Lol, okay I am confused with some of Jake's women too. ;) I do think she is not Greta and was with Jake in Joan's.. though.
The video is lovely. Check it out when you can. There is also a quick moment of Heath in a car from "I'm Not There".
I know, I give up Get Real! The video has Heath in too?! I loved INT :D
WDW, you cagey devil!!!! Bill???
OK. I've met Bill, three separate times, including before he got elected in '92 after a Presidential debate. Never was within a thousand miles of Tom Hanks, mores the pity and I have to say. You KISSED Rupert Graves??? You KISSED him? I adore Rupert. Dreaming of Joseph Lees is one of my favorite movies ever! I wanted to just throttled Samantha Morton's character.Give her a good shove.
Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal has been actively supporting Barack Obama for President for probably almost a year. Since the very beginning. I saw video of Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins out campaigning for John Edwards. Reese Witherspoon is supporting Hillary. Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and George Clooney are supporting Obama. Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson are with Hillary.
Oh. And Chuck Norris is supporting Hucakbee. LOL!!!
Oops! Forgot. Jennifer Anniston, Brooke Shields, Harry Connick, Jr. and Edward Norton are also supporting Brack Obama. Sean Penn donated money to Dennis Kucinich and Rob Reiner, Steven Speilberg and Barbra Streisand are with Hillary.
thanks for political preferences among The Stars, Bobbyanna. And I realize that I was in error, I HAD heard also Susan Sarandon was supporting Edwards. And huh! Naomi for Obama, interesting.
Enjoying the fascainting Fincher commentary on Z-DVD.
Sorry, I'm "spamming" LOL!
But I wanted to clarify. I guess Speilberg, Paul Newman and a couple of others gave equally to the top three Democratic Candidates, and Gov. Richardson raised $$$ from them, too. Film industry ties to New Mexico, etc.Sean Penn actually contributed more money to John Edwards then he did to Dennis Kucinich. Adam Sandler and Kelsey Grammer are supporting Giuliani.
Read somewhere that this notion that the movie industry is filled with liberals is a myth. While various actors and directors are often identified with Liberal, Democratic causes and candidates, most studios are run by multi-national corporations with boards of directors and CEOs who are definitely NOT Liberal or Democratic.
Whatever happens, I just want it to be over.
Hi there,
Love your posts as usual...peeking out under the weather...back soon.
H everyone - the roads conpired against me this morning and the tubes this evening, so taken me 3 more hours to get home :( Just about done in.
Thanks Bobbyanna for those fascinating bits of news. I'm really interested by it so thanks *) I can see how hard it would be to make your mind up between those two.
I kissed Rupert Graves a long time ago and I daresay he can't remember but I certainly can! The good old days seeing Rupert, James Wilby, Daniel Day Lewis and others regularly in the theatre.
Hi Pia - let me know what you think of the Fincher commentary. I've not heard it yet.
Hey Sass - feel better very soon*)
Poor WDW... traffic is horrible, isn't it? i got the usual "signal failure" excuse too when i got home this evening... :(
because of this, I'll forgive you for kissing Rupert Graves - my favourite out of the cast of "Maurice". My friend was infatuated with Hugh Grant back then. But it's the game keeper that I was seeing... :P
I think before BBM, the final kiss between Rupert Graves and James Wilby was the hottest gay kiss I've watched on screen.... thanks for bringing back the memory.
*g* Love these pictures.
Chris shaved his legs too... ;)
A wonderful post, as always, WDW, and the past few have been great too, I've been reading, but just not had much time to comment. Your work on this blog is fantastic! And always interesting. I enjoyed seeing those pic of Jake, Chris and the box-carrying girl, but would it be wrong of me to say I kept getting distracted by wondering where they actually were?!! Jake looked great too - happy and smiley, just the way I like him. :)
I hear the BBM viewing last night was a great success and only wished I'd been there - still, there's Oxford in June.
getreal, thanks SO much for giving us the link to the Youtube vid - that was totally gorgeous, and you are right, I haven't seen the film, but I know I will love it if there's music like this in it! Definitely on my list of films to watch. Thank you. Particularly enjoyed the very brief glimpse of Jake and the 2 or 3 glimpses of Heath in INT. Great, great vid.
Your welcome, Christie! Yes it is a wonderful video and it was great to get the three Zodiac clips of Jake. Two with Chloe and one with RDJ and the two clips of Heath, one in a car wind blowing his hair and the other him kissing his wife character both from INT. I have watched it a couple of times because I adore that song! Yes you must see Once. Very quiet and simple movie but they come up with beautiful music like that.
It is also edited very well and whomever did it chose wonderful clips from all those movies.
WDW, you poor thing! :( I'm sorry your commute home was also a nightmare. Hope you are relaxing with a nice glass of wine with your feet up.
^^ should be you're welcome, Christie in my first post.
Hi Winterbird - I think Maurice for me was my first BBM experience - not in the same scale but when it came out when I was a student in London I was ripped apart by it and by the book. I lent the DVD to a friend (and never got it back) but I can still remember so much of it. I'm a big fan of Brideshead Revisted and that has the same feeling for me. I have very fond memories of Maurice now and I still get goose bumps when I see the start of the film set on that beach.
Hi Cornflake and welcome! Great to see you here :) I'll have to inspect Chris' legs - what a hardship (NOT!)
Hi Christie -thanks! I'm glad you've enjoyed the post - time is always so short, definitely. I can't wait for Oxford in June and all th people I'm going to get to meet after being in touch with some of them for so long :) Be great to see you there.
Get Real - thanks so much for posting that link - I'm ging to look at it right now. At last I have some quiet time :D
Thanks Get Real managing to relax at last *)
Right, now I know I'm voting Obama because I like most of the folks on his list.
Trouble is I'm not entitled to vote in the States, but Barack you have my virtual support *
Hi Anouska - I'm going to virtually vote too, not quite sure for whom at this stage - they need to reason with me :D It is interesting hearing who's going for whom.
I'm a Barack Obama supporter. He has been a frequent and vocal critic of the current administration. Unfortunately, others who were in an even better position, chose to remain silent when I wish they would have said something as the "loyal opposition." However. I will support who ever gets the nomination. There isn't a single Democrat in the race, including some who've dropped out already, who isn't qualified to make a wonderful president! My dog Skip would be a vast improvement over what we currently have...and I don't own a dog!
Well, my virtual vote goes to Barack Obama, cos he's kinda cute - well for a politician anyway ;) Of course if I had a proper vote I would make a more informed decision, I'm not THAT much of an airhead;) I do think it might be good to have a break from Bush/Clinton though, as it's been one or the other family in the White House for the last 20 years or so. But I don't know enough about it to really comment - not that that has ever stopped me before! Who's Jake voting for, or is he sitting on the fence?
As an uninformed and unemancipated Brit, can I virtually vote for Obama AND Hillary? - I like them both. That would be a rarety indeed for a UK election - to have two attractive alternatives.
Hi WDW..I am a little late to comment on this post..but I just could not resist...thanks for posting the old pics of Jake...yummy...shortish hair, clean shaven..face and legs...now..where is that grey cardigan? LOLOL!! You know I love this Jake...thanks for feeding my habit...hugs..Michele
Hi Michele - glad to oblige and give you your Jake ;) Have a good night!
This will be the 64th post in this blog, so I don't know how much it will get read. :-(
When Jake referred to the *5* people in his family, his subsequent (or was it previous?) comment about getting a lot of feedback may have been a non sequitur. The two ideas were together in a sentence, but they were not necessary tightly connected. Those of us who talk faster than we think sometimes get things tangled up like that. ;-)
Let's face it, Jake often has to just talk, because it's expected of him, even if he hasn't thought of many things to say. So, he strings thoughts together (stream of consciousness), and the result is Gyllenspeak. This is kind of endearing, in my opinion, but it does *not* stand up to Wittgensteinian scrutiny.
Let's cut the poor guy some slack, or be willing to entertain far-fetched theories like:
1. Jake has multiple personalities, so there are at least *two* of him. (not likely)
2. There is a Ghostenhaal who was once a Gyllenhaal. Only the Gyllenhaals can see or hear Ghostenhaal, and they get ideas from him/her. This may be unlikely, but would make a great screenplay! ;-)
3. Austin! Or maybe Reese! Maybe Jake and Reese were secretly married (unlikely), so Reese is technically part of Jake's "family."
I really, really, *really* don't want to go any farther into far-fetched realms with this.
:-(
