WDW favourite Rufus Wainwright is playing in Wilmington, Delaware, tonight and he's been interviewed (on the phone from backstage in Washington DC) by The News Journal of Delaware to mark the occasion. Rufus is asked about Jake Gyllenhaal and I absolutely adore Rufus' answer.
'I know Jake quite well, mainly because he'll admit he's a pretty fanatical Wainwright fan. He's been snooping around for a while, which has been lovely. Him, I don't look at as a mother. With him, I'm completely predatorial and willing to go anywhere, but I'm pretty sure he's straight. So that's not gonna -- whatever. We're fine. So I see him in Hollywood, and he's become quite a friend actually.'
I see this as a perfect excuse (as if I needed one) to repeat yet again one of my favourite moments of 2007. Good way to start the weekend.
'What you want and what is the truth are always two different things'
In David Fincher's interview with Jeffrey Wells that I posted yesterday, the discussion moved to Rendition and whether the character of Douglas Freeman was actually believable and how that passivity in the face of such horror would not be something David would normally associate with Jake's character. Jake would want to overpower him, David said.
So as a response, and because I love looking at Jake talking so earnestly and thoughtfully about a subject he's loath to make light of, here is a video interview in which Jake talks about the morality of the decision facing Douglas as well as Hollywood's role in enlightening audiences about some of the more disturbing events going on in the wider world.
Hollywood's role is to aid discussion - that's all it can do - and in America one is fortunate that the discussion is allowed. There's GyllenSpeak to relish here too: 'I don't know how anybody does anything good by thinking they're doing the right thing' and 'What you want and what is the truth are always two different things and I think that's like the human struggle.' Is there a translator in the house? But guess which scene Jake selected as his favourite from Rendition? A clue - it features Meryl and Peter.
Talking of translators needed... Here is an interview with Jake, and produced in German, in which he talked more about the role of politics and Hollywood. When asked if actors should use their celebrity to promote politics, Jake replies that he doesn't consider what actors have to say particularly interesting. Journalists should, in his opinion, ask politicians not actors for their political opinions because they have more power - and they are potentially more dangerous. Jake is asked whether he, and George Clooney, choose roles for a cause. He replies that he chooses roles that are concerned with emotions and with how humans relate to one another and not for a political statement. If the audience isn't affected then what's the point? 'George Clooney would probably say something similar to you, only funnier and more articulate.' However, Jake then goes on to say that every choice whether to make a film or not is inevitably political and all films are political to some extent.
I find it interesting that it sounds as though Jake and the other actors managed to turn off from the horror of the torture enacted in the film by the sound of 'Cut!' and simply walking off set. But I suppose that is a crucial ability.

hehehe, Great title. Rufus thinks the same way I do!
I know, isn't it great Ruby! That's exactly what I thought too :D Rufus is just like us!
'Him, I don't look at as a mother. With him, I'm completely predatorial and willing to go anywhere. So that's not gonna -- whatever. We're fine."
^ ^ ^
What he said.
Hee, Rufus *hearts* Jake!!! And agree with him soo much! ;p
Seems Rufus speaks for us all. :D
I only discovered Rufus's music recently and cannot stop playing it, cannot get it out of my head. "Poses" is beautiful but so melancholic I need to be in the right frame of mind to listen to it. Good on Jake for being a fan, the man has taste. As Rufus does.
Hey Pia and Get Real! Ditto :D
Cristie - I just love Rufus and was lucky enough to see him - with Ruby - just a week or two after his NYC show (with Jake). Both Jake and Rufus have excellent taste - I like 'Beautiful Child' myself...
Friend says "Judy Judy Judy" is great, so I put it on my Netflix list. Ive not been a hot fan of Rufus although I like his lyrics. But Im willing to be converted.
Let me join in with Rufus too....I am totally predatorial and willing to go anywhere with Jake too....I'm just awaiting my opportunity....and I have plenty of time.....which is just as well. I can't say as I know Rufus' music though...but perhaps I should give it a try if some here, and Jake think it's good.
The video was great..and WDW you made me LOL with the 'translator in the house?' line!
Great pics tonight too, I wish I was that girl fan! Although I may not survive Jake's hands on me like that!
We saw Rufus do some of his Judy act Pia - with the black tux jacket and the fishnets and he was so good. I loved his band acting as dancers while not being able to dance. I know Rufus is not to everyone's taste but when he sings a big emotional melody, I could jsut sit there and be a million miles away.
Hey Rosie - your chance will come :D Give Rufus another go, especially the most recent album Release the Stars with Between My Legs on it. If nothing else, it'll remind you of Jake, but it's much more than that.
I did my best with my icky German (I should know better having spent a lot of time there in my youth digging!). That lucky girl... and Jake looked fine with it too :D
I love RW's honesty. Who could blame him? Half the gay world is in love with Jake -- and the other half hates him for making their boyfriends (i.e., those that make up the first half) forget them! :-)
Hey tpe! Jake is just a love magnet :D What all of our men have to put up with and live up too!
oh Jake you made me love you I didnt wanna do it I didnt wanna do it you made me love you, I didn’t want to do it, I didn’t want to do it you made me want you, and all the time you knew it, I guess you always knew it you made me happy sometimes, sometimes you made me glad but there were times, dear, you made me feel so bad
oh, well, as Rufus says: whatever. Im gonna go watch Gray's Anatomy, second season.
oh Pia I love your Jake songs *)
rufus is such a sweet heart :)
I remember he once mentioned in Q mag that he wants Jake to play him in a movie, so he can excuse to get close to him. Ha ha
sorry, that was me.
Everybody wants Jake to play them. Howard Dean said so, Joe Nameth. I would also like Jake to play me, or with me, or something, Id better go watch my DVDs, the Rufus quote got me all wierd. thanks alot WDW.
Hey Winterbird - what a fabulous role - with singing! And yes, Rufus would have to spend a lot of time in close proximity :D I love to see that Jake has this effect on so many of us, famous or otherwise. Noone is safe from the Gyllencharm... :D
"What all of our men have to put up with and live up too!"
-- I believe it! ;-)
I'd like Jake to play (with) me, too Pia! Sigh, have to get off. Catch up with you all later :D
Maybe it's good for them, tpe, to have these high standards to measure up against :D
Aww,Rufus...welcome to our world:)
Thanks for the Rendition stuff, WDW:)Not long now til it comes out on DVD:) And my Zodiac DVD is in the post according to play!!I can't wait for that Jake /RDJ commentary:)
I like Rufus's voice. He sounds good when he's singing material written by somebody else. I can't imagine him in any other occupation than the one he's in.
But doesn't he have a lover already?
Morning everyone, beautiful day here, but I have a cold :(
Hey TL - it's great knowing that Zodiac DVD is in the post :D When doing the post last night I was really getting into a Rendition mood - I'm definitely ready to see that again but it may be a log time before I can watch the Peter and Meryl scene again!
Morning Paulh - I love Rufus' voice too, it's amazing what he can do with it. It sounds so good live on stage too. Yep, he has the long-suffering Jorgen, whom he once said was the only man more beautiful than Jake :D
Jorn :)
Morning WDW, I have a cold too :(
I crashed and burned early last night, but good to catch up with you all today! Get well soon,WDW and Anouska! Best cure for a cold, rest, warmth, hot drinks, paracetamol and a whopping dose of Jake!
Indeed, young Mr.Wainwright knows very much how it feels to be us,although he has the distinct advantage of at least being a friend of Jake's..but does that make it worse, however,so near and yet so far?! And yes,Rufus' long suffering boyfriend must know all to well what it's like to be our significant others!
I love Rufus' voice, it is one of those distinctive voices you recognise immediately you hear it,so warm and soulful and,to my mind,at its best in melancholy mood, gives me the shivers(although "The Maker Makes" just kills me still). Haven't invested in "Release The Stars" yet though,it's another item on my "Go on,spoil yourself!" list and I'm trying to concentrate on just buying necessities at the moment (I class Jake-DVD's as necessities, however! ;-) ).
Great Rendition interview, too,WDW. I cannot WAIT for the DVD release! Let's hope the DVD sales make up for the criminally depleted Box Office, in the USA at any rate. I think Gavin,Kelly and the cast did too good a job of holding up a mirror to American politics etc for their own good!
And as for Miss Pretty in Pink Jumper...if I were her I'd have my midriff framed after it was graced by the Gyllen-digits! Lucky girl!
Jake said he love "Once" (on Jonathan Ross film 2007)! i am still waiting for the DVD!
Hi Anouska - sorry to hear you're coldy too :( Ahh Jorg - I knew it began with J like all the best male names ;)
Hi Nadine! I definitely recommend Release the Stars - they were playing it in a cafe this morning while I had breakfast - very considerate of them. I can't wait for the Rendition DVD, I'm more than ready to see that film again (and again).
Hey Winterbird - What's 'Once' (I'm probably being thick). Hope you're having a good day :D
"Once" is a lovely Irish movie which surprised everyone in last year's Sundance Film Festival. It's a small film, and i think UK released it on limited cinemas last October/November. I've read some good reviews, but I was just waiting for it to come out on DVD.... before I found out that Jake loves it! Now I need to watch it, like... right away.
Anyway, Jonathan Ross asked what films (when Jake was doing Rendition promo) Jake likes so far in 2007. And he said, "I saw 'Once'. And I love it".
it's supposed to be a movie about a musician/singer basking on the street and met a girl and they went on to try to make an album.... it has many songs in it, but not a musical.
Jake does love his music. :)
ooops... i mean "busking"!! basking... my English is getting worse.. :P
Thanks Winterbird - I remember it now! Seems like such a long time ago it came out. I'd forgotten that Jake had mentioned it - I'll have to watch that interview again. I've been looking at Amazon and I see it's out in the UK on the 25 Feb. I'm going to have to see that! You're right, Jake really does love his music (and some singers certainly return the compliment).
I'm having an afternoon whiskey to ward off my cold :D
I just watched the Film2007 interview and Jake doesn't mention anything about any other films? But I only taped the main bit where he talked about Rendition, there must have been another bit that I missed:( Damn!
Oh well, plenty of Jake to look forward to, with the DVDs on their way. Although with the state of the postal service in this country I won't relax until I have Zodiac safely in my hands! And yes, I'm more than ready for the Rendition DVD - I've been ready since I first heard of the "shirtless and sweaty" scene;D
Hope evryone's having a good weekend - wrap up warm those of you with cold, take plenty of fluids and watch plenty of Jake (I'm sure WDW has those last two covered;)
I don't think it was included in the original clip of Jake interview. Jonathan Ross usually asks his guest "what movie have you watched this year that you like?" in all interviews and then edit these clips to make "year-end movie of the year" special.
I just saw the part where Jake said he loves "Once" on BBC2 this afternoon, it's a rerun of last week's programme.
in the same programme, i think Daniel Radcliffe mentioned that he likes "Bourne Ultimatum" and "Zodiac" :)
You can watch the programme again with BBC's iplayer:

Thanks Winterbird!! Off to watch it now:)
Thanks very much Winterbird! I knew I shouldn't have been out buying supplies for hibernation over the next 24 hours. And Good Old Daniel - he knows a good film when he sees it (Daniel must also have met Jake as Jake seems to have been to the occasional HP premiere) :D
TL - We nearly missed a Jake bit! I'm definitely drinking fluids (just the naughty kind) and I'm Jaking so I'm pretty happy :D It's raining and I don't care. Hope you're having a good day.
It's in the last quarter part of the programme, Jake appears right after Jerry Seinfeld... and he appears "several times" afterwards.
oh... and Heath apparently likes "Once" too. Although they only have one second of clip of him saying "Once". :P
Thanks so much for that link, Winterbird! Never enough Jake:) I'll have to check out Once, seeing as it comes so highly recommended;)
G'day, predatory darlin's!
WDW and Anousaka, sorry about sniffles, take care! Yes, naughty fluids do help.
Morning email from Amazon says my Zodiac DVD is on its way, I do P.O. pick up on Tuesday. Yay!
Holiday celebrations sorta hanging on this year, I'll get serious after this weekend. Or maybe not. Jonathan delivers shiraz, scotch and a yummy he says cheese, from my favorite lady cheesemaker in Vermont, with maple syrup and pecans. why not? Also 70% Cocoa Cote D'Or. Just in case I get a cold. :)
Jake magic: my new mantra: "Him, I dont look at as a mother." Love it!
"Relishing Gyllenspeak." LOL! Lucky he left Columbia before some humorless prof took him to task. ("WTF Gyllenhaal!")
god bless jake whereever he may be right now.
^ ^ ^
that's me
Thanks Winterbird - I thoroughly enjoyed watching that and it's in the new post :D
TL - You've changed outfits! And you're looking gorgeous, may I say... I feel lime maybe I need a change, My right arm is beginning to ache from pointing that pistol.
Hey Anon Pia - the naughty liquids are doing the trick although they also meant I spent far too much of this afternoon snoring when I could have been Jaking.
So what sort of Scotch has Jonathan delivered? Mr WDW poured me an Irish variety this afternoo to help my sniffles and it just made me fall asleep! I'll stick with my Bowmore...
I definitely agree with your Columbia statement. If Jake didn't come out with any more of these verbal gems, he just wouldn't be the same Jake.
You've made me want to eat some cheese. I don't suppose Jonathan would deliver over here?
My old faithful Scotch is Ballentines, WDW, reasonable and pretty good. I keep telling myself if I drank less I could afford single malt, but then perhaps Id drink more. etcetc.
I dunno, if you want some fine cheese, like Jake, Jonathan delivers! :) :)
Hey Pia - Ballentines is great! That's one of Mr WDW's favourites, although our home is awash with whiskey after Christmas :D My expensive whiskey isn't going to last long as it tastes so good and is helping me fight my cold.
I have soooo much cheese so I'll have to put the lovely Jonathan on hold :D
I saw at least 1000 films in 2007, but "Once" was probably not one of them (I thought I had seen it, but when I read the synopsis of it, it didn't sound at all familiar....)
I didn't watch "Eastern Promises" and "No Country for Old Men" because I have to be in a certain frame of mind for watchingviolent, bloody downers. Bring on "Waitress" and "Dan in Real Life," because I can watch films like that any time. :-)
"The Other Boleyn Girl" will undoubtedly show Anne Boleyn's head getting chopped off, but the intricacies of court life, and the complex characters of Henry the 8th and the 3 Boleyns will be the main focus.
Sorry, I typed too many zeroes. I saw 100 films, not 1,000 in 2007
