Zodiac's here and the stars party! And Jake's still in LA...

I'm sure that tonight, across a sizeable chunk of the western hemisphere, all will be quiet except, that is, for the gentle whirr of DVD players. The reason being, of course, Zodiac is here! And it's longer, it looks better, it sounds better and it has so many extra features jammed onto its two discs, I'm surprised they fit in the box. But amazingly they do and I hope that many of you have that box tonight, or that it's flying its way across the pond as we speak, or should that be swimming?

I'm not giving anything away, not least because I have yet to see all of the extras (it's going to take a full weekend for that), but I will say that what I have seen - the film as Fincher intended accompanied by the commentary by Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr, producer Brad Fischer, writer and producer James Vanderbilt and novelist James Ellroy - is sensational and will devour hours of your time, if you let it. My advice? Let it!

Jake and Robert are not constant commentary companions unfortunately but they provide the icing on the cake and reinforce the fascinating insights and asides of the other trio of commentators. I think we can all imagine that Jake and Robert have great mutual respect and some considerable liking for each other and that is evident throughout their contribution to the commentary, which is full of giggles (mostly by Jake), funny voices (by Jake), mock sobs (by Jake) and funny or frustrating tales of what a day in the life of a Zodiac actor was like (mostly Jake). Jake seems to enjoy listening to Robert as much as we do, and it's a nice touch at the end when Jake thanks us for letting the two of them into our homes. But don't be disappointed the duo are not in it throughout - Brad, James and James present fascinating background to key scenes and moments and highlight the genius of Fincher while throwing light on how everything was brought together to produce a film that will surely be the definitive account of this episode of San Francisco history. And that's before listening to the David Fincher commentary!

For those who have yet to get their mitts on the DVD event of 2008, you can visit the ZodiacMovie website and download bits and pieces. Plus the site looks great.

So before I settle down for another Zodiac evening of extras, I thought it would be fun to look back at the theatrical release of the film itself. Many of you probably remember the frustration that preceded the release of the big screen version of Zodiac. It suffered postponement after postponement, with no explanation, and it seemed like it would never come. Then it did, finally, and I coudn't wait - so much so I flew to the US to see it on its opening day (at the Grove and Farmer's Market in LA). While in LA, I learned that a screening of the film had taken place in NYC - on 28 February at the Tribeca Grand Hotel.

Here is a video of the event, which was sponsored by GQ magazine and features stars Jake and Mark Ruffalo (the one who wore the 'chafing plaid pants').

I knew little about it at the time but now I know that the Cinema Society screening was followed by a whopper of a party at the Soho Grand. The guests at the screening and party included: 'Bono, Joaquin Phoenix, Tim Robbins, Patricia Clarkson, Willem Dafoe, David Schwimmer, Debbie Harry, Helena Christensen, Terry George, Darren Aronofsky, Bart Freundlich, Elizabeth Berkley, Moby, Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader, Rob Thomas, Petra Nemcova, Rufus Wainwright, Frederique Van Der Wal, Damon Dash and Rachel Roy.' The party was hosted by Andew Saffir (the founder of Cinema Society) and GQ's Jim Nelson. How great that favourite Rufus Wainwright was there.

And talking of Jim Nelson (pictured below with Jake) - GQ has always loved Jake and this may be why. Jim told the NY Daily News 'Nobody is more down-to-earth and genuinely cool than Jake Gyllenhaal. I just like him a lot personally. I feel that he has not been affected much by stardom.'

While we're talking of early screenings of Zodiac, it seems wrong to forget Cannes. This Dutch video starts off at the Hotel du Cap and takes us to the Zodiac press conference where Jake talks to us of this 'movie about the unknown.' Then, we're at the Palais for those priceless moments on 17 May (and then there's an abseiling bee...).

PS - Jake out with Naomi

It turns out that Jake wasn't back on the New Mexico filmset yesterday after all. Instead, he was having lunch with mum Naomi at familiar favourite Joan's on Third. I think, by the grafitti, you can tell where the picture is from...but great to see Jake out with Naomi nevertheless (loving the Nike, Jake).

Includes pictures from IHJ and here.

Squee...is so excited!! I just got my Zodiac DC DVD!! This post is the icing on the cake! :D

But can I just say how annoying Virgin Megastore is. I didn't see Zodiac on the DVD display when I first walked in. I figured it would be prominently displayed. So I ask a person who works there. He looks it up and tells me it is in with all the regular DVD's downstairs. I found it thankfully, under the Z's. But you would think since it is just being released today that they would have it out on the DVD displays like all the other new releases. Bahh.

Anyway, uber excited for Jake and Robert! Thanks WDW for setting the mood.

Hey Get Real! So glad to set the mood. I'm still so excited myself and I'm now going to settle down with some extras. Putting the DVD in with the Zs?! These people have no sense of history.... Enjoy and let me know what you thing :D

Hey WDW! This DVD sounds the business:D I haven't got mine yet:( I'll give it a few days cos I'm having trouble with the post atm:( They lost a percel which should have arrived last week and all they can tell me is that it's at a sorting office somewhere in South London but they don't know which one and I have to wait 3 weeks to see if it turns up before I can claim for it. The only thing stopping me from giving them a mouthful of abuse(and I'm normally a pretty calm and mellow person) is that I don't want them to take revenge by "accidentally" losing my Zodiac DVD as well! Still, it's not that long a wait really, compared to the wait for the film in the cinema (and even then I didn't get to see it!) so I can wait a few days.

Got the Dutch video to work first time! Yay!! Lol at the abseiling bee:D Some people will do anything to try to get close to Jake!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL! Well phew at least that you managed to see the abseiling bee DVD! Hopefully the Zodiac DVD wont be too long if you maintain good realtions with the Roya Mail :D

Off to add new pic of Jake and mum to post... :D

No Zodiac in my mailbox today and I am very excited about all the goodies there!

Sounds like you'll be in Zodiac heaven for a couple of days to come! Fincher already explained how that "barebone" DVD happened, it's only right now we get the real deal!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird! I'm totally in Zodiac heaven (is it that obvious...;) ) I hope your's arrives soon. This DVD makes up for a lot. I just wish work didn't get in the way... And imagine how we'd have felt with a fraction of these goodies for BBM.

Anonymous said...

WDW.. you go ahead and dive into the Zodiac heaven... i'll be here all excited and jealous...

oh and the wool cardigan thing... he obviously got that from his mom :P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

You'll get it soon enough Winterbird :D Oh the GyllenWoollies... :( So maybe this explains it, maybe each year Jake is given another cardie. Maybe it's the thing to give the person who has everything! I do prefer Naomi's to Jake's though :)

Anonymous said...

CUTE Dutch video, some lovely Cannes and Jake, and that guy in the car, love to hear people speaking Jaka's name -

Recalling that Naomi fought to lose weight, at one time, I like seeing her look slender and fit -

WDW I'll enjoy your "high" and posts until my own ship (-ment haha) comes in.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Positively Pia - Naomi looks good, doesn't she? Great joke, btw ;D I think this is curing my cold... In the documentary, Jake is funny yet earnest and eager to please at the same time.

Never enough Cannes Jake :)

I have the first Zodiac DVD and I might wait a bit before getting the directors cut. I wish they had released this instead. Give us everything instead of being greedy.

Oh I do love the comments and details.

I also love seeing Jake with his mom, it's been ages since we saw them together.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Trekfan - I really, really recommend the Director's Cut though. I've just been watching a bit where Jake has to do a take 36 times - it is so funny! His face when he's told that they finally got the one that counts :D I'm glad they didn't rush to get this out, better to wait and get it right. At least we had the other DVD to keep us going.

Great to see Jake and his mum again :D

ANOUSKA! Wherever you are, I just got your Roberta Sparrow joke! You dont know how funny this is, considering how due I am for a perm, that I will accomplish this Friday.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia I could really do with a hair cut, I look like a woolly extra from BBM. Have a good night :D

Anonymous said...

Wet dark wild and wooly, huh? :) :) I feel sheepish because it took me awhile to get Anouska's joke.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

hey Pia - I wouldn't feel sheepish if I were you. I'm so Zodiaced out right now and loving watching Jake grin through endless takes that I couldn't get a joke if it jumped up in front of me and slapped me in the face with its nine arms (I seem to have Bubble Boy on the brain as well). 'Wet Dark Wild and Woolly' like a Jake Christmas pressie cardie? Oh dear! I'd better go to bed... :D

Your post is fabulous, as usual...thanks for all the Zodiac dvd previews and goodies. Alas..I have not gotten my dvd yet...but it is just as well...I do not have time to watch it right now. I shall live it through you and your postings, which are detailed enough to get me through until I can get my own copy. I was completely floored by that first pic in the posting...Jakey in the phone booth...wow..that is one sexy boy..whew!! As always..thank you for all you do to give us our Jake fix. Hugs hugs hugs....Michele

Morning everyone :D

Thanks Michele - I'm glad I can keep you going til you get the DVD :D Have a good day *)

Morning WDW and everyone,

Bring my post over to share my pain. Get real I feel you. :)

Morning WDW,
This post is a beautiful presentation of the DVD. The company could have used your creativity to market it here in Manhattan. I know this is Zodiac's second DVD release, but Best Buy
had NO copies, of regular format Zodiac on its' shelves, and not many copies in HD format:(

The clerks--I felt like I was in a Kevin Smith movie--were unaware the movie was released yesterday, they had no idea when they would get copies in regular format and one asked me what the movie was all about. Arrgh.
I'll check Virgin sites here today and Amazon, and PlayUSA online.

Hi, WDW!!! Had some computer difficulties past few days and they wouldn't let me onto your site!!! I think I need more memory.
You have so many goodies, videos, etc. Thanks so much for previewing the Directors cut of Z. Sass, here, there was a lot of hype about 3:10 to Yuma, (Elmore Leonard is a regular at my Borders) but they didn't even carry or know about the release of the DC of Zodiac! A shopper told me that he got his yesterday, at Best Buy!

Naomi looks wonderful. Love her a lot.I like the slightly longer hair, too.

What Sass said.

G'morning, y'all!

Hi WDW. Hi everyone.

Best Buy was the only store to have Zodiac DC in their Sunday ad, so I went there yesterday after work. It was not in the new releases section so I looked in drama. No copies but there was a title sticker on the shelf next to the original Zodiac DVDs. I asked a clerk if they were sold out already, that it was just released today. After checking, he said they don't have it. I went home and ordered it from Amazon, where it said "will ship within 1 to 3 weeks". ???

I just finished watching the "Critics' Choice Awards" from Monday night. "Falling Slowly" from "Once" won for best song.(You had mentioned that both Jake and Heath chose this as their favorite 2007 film.) The "In Memoriam" part of the show turned out to be a comedy bit about film losses, and Rendition was included in that. grrr...

Thanks again for all your great work, WDW!

Hey all,

Sass, that sucks. :( You should check out Virgin Megastore. They had copies. I don't get what is going on with this release. You would think they would want to promote this dvd since it has all the bells and wistles. Who knows...

Neely, the Critics Choice awards was very good! Loved that Once won best song. That song is just heartbreakingly beautiful. :)

Well my Zodiac is in Springfield, right now, so it'll be here tomorrow but I wont be home, so Friday I'll have it in my hot little hands along with Once and the Piaf film for the weekend.

Saturday hosting champagne lunch with some old friends - how much should I spent on champagne. I guess I can pull this on topic by remarking that Im making up for drinking the blue stuff with umbrellas on New Years Eve.

there were complaints among the comments on the Carpetbaggers blog at NYTimes about the excellence of Zodiac being overlooked.

twistedlogic said...

Got my DVD today!Yay!!! Only problem is, I don't know what to watch first! The behind the scenes doc or the film with the Jake/RDJ commentary. I usually watch films first without commentary but I don't know if I have the willpower to do that with this one. So much Jake, so little time!
Hope all of you across the pond having trouble get your copy soon. Ironic really that us UK-ers seem to have got it sooner when it's not even released over here. I'm wondering if it's worth ordering Rendition from Playusa, as it's out in the US a couple of weeks before here. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to bits about Zodiac, but Rendition is the one I'm REALLY looking forward too (and no, not just for THAT scene - well, maybe a little bit;D)

Anonymous said...

Congrats, TL on getting your dvd!! I have just started watching it with the JG/RDJ commentary. So far I love them but there is not enough of them. They share the commentary and I want more Jake and Robert, lol. I have a ways to go so I guess I have to be patient, lol.

Neely, meant to agree with you on not liking the Rendition "joke" on the Critics Choice awards. Not funny...grrr indeed. They also made the same type of joke on I'm Not There. *rolls eyes*

Pia, your champers party sounds fun! Glad your dvd is on the way. Good to know that people are commenting on the excellence of Zodiac and how it should be recognized on NYT Carpetbagger. I like the Carpetbagger especially during awards time.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone! Good to see you all - just got home, absolutely cream crackered :\ What's the solution?... I know, more Zodiac DVD!! Oh and doing tonight's post of course.

Hi Sass - Thanks so much for that! If I can get one person to buy Zodiac I'll be happy :D As I said in my answer on the other thread, that reminds me of when I had to explain the plot of Rendition to a cinema usher! I'm sorry you couldn't gey hold of it, but I'm glad you gave them an education :)

Bobbyanna! Good to see you, mate :D I've been thinking of you - how did your birthday go? I love Naomi too - good to see her and she looks great (as does her offspring!)

Thanks Pia *) I'm glad your DVD is getting closer. Love the sound of the champers party. I can definitely feel a party weekend coming up :)

Hi Neely! It's terrible that these places haven't got Zodiac in :( I just don't understand it, how can people buy it if they don't see it? And Amazon are clearly hopeless - there's been no trouble here with delivery and it has to come a lot further. I must listen to that song!

Hey TL! You got it! (And Ruby got her's today too, so she'd better me watching it as we speak ;)) Well, there are two discs so you culd put one in your PC and one in your TV! Seriously though - I recommend watching the film with Jake and Robert's commentary first and then the Making of special as both go together well. At the weekend I'll listen to David's commentary. But tonight, I'll catch some more and rewatch the documentary.

I can't find Rendition on PlayUSA, which is not good. Hopefully, they'll have it up soon.

Get Real - I hope you're enjoying it! I know it's annoying that Jake and RDJ aren't there all the time but I do enjoy listening to them talk about scenes they weren't even in. And what there is, is so entertaining and funny. Jokes about Rendition just aren't funny :(

Ruby said...

(And Ruby got her's today too, so she'd better be watching it as we speak ;))

Haven't made my mind up yet. Might be podcast night. ;-)

Nah, Mr R and I are going to watch the making-of doc after dinner. :P Will save the commentary for a weekend.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Glad to hear it Rubes - let me know what you and Mr R think of it. I think you will both find Jake, dare I say, adorable?

Ruby said...

We need a new word. How about we just remove a couple of letters and make him 'doable' instead. :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Like you're thinking... ;) Doable sounds (as Jake would say) apposite :D

Anonymous said...

WDW, yes Jake and Robert are fantastic and I am loving what they have to say! They have such a wonderful chemistry.

No, jokes about Rendition are not okay. :(

Have to add my praise to the pic of Jake and Naomi. I just adore pics of Jake and his family. They just seem to have such a wonderful bond. Naomi looks great, as does her son. :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real :D I'm glad you're enjoying it - Jake and RDJ go so well together, Robert certainly knows how to make Jake giggle!

Anonymous said...

"That song is just heartbreakingly beautiful. :)

Hey Get Real - The short clip they played sounded so nice. I have the movie on my Netflix queue - can't wait to hear the whole thing. :)

"there's been no trouble here with delivery and it has to come a lot further."

Hey WDW - I couldn't figure that one out either. We might just have to swim on over and watch it with you. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Please do Neely you'd be very welcome :)

"We need a new word. How about we just remove a couple of letters and make him 'doable' instead. :D"

Great, Ruby! that is so much more in focus, and less, like, bilateral. . .

"The clerks--I felt like I was in a Kevin Smith movie--were unaware the movie was released yesterday, they had no idea when they would get copies in regular format and one asked me what the movie was all about. Arrgh." [Sass]

Yikes! You don't want to get stuck in a "Clerks" movie. That's worse than having an airplane engine come through the ceiling of your bedroom. :-(

Get Real, I don't think you need to worry about "Rendition" jokes. The only thing that comes close to being a joke is that Jake and Reese waived part of their fees for filming it, as if they had negotiated for part of the profits instead?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia - I think that just sums it (Jake) up!

Hi Paulh :D I always rather liked that Jake and Reese took a paycut to make Rendition but, as you say, if it was in hopes of some profit... I think there'll be no such problems with Brothers :D I can feel a Rendition rant coming on - that it should have had the recognition...

paulh said...

I thought "Rendition" had won some obscure award. No? Some of the best parts of it were in Arabic, so it's hard for us in the English-speaking world to fully appreciate them. The daughter and her lover really impressed me with their acting. The CIA personnel could leave the copuntry tomorrow and never have to worry about all the problems again, but the people who live there are stuck with horrible choices no matter what they do.

So Jake won't cross the picket line? Glad to hear it. Has the show been cancelled because too many presenters won't come, or did they find others who would come?
