Has Jake's Giant Leap taken two steps backwards? And Jake dances to Rufus' 14th Street

Jake Gyllenhaal may have only just stepped off the set of one film but now we're waiting to find out what's next - will it be Nailed or will it be the Unnamed Moon Project, which may be named afterall, just not named very well, as Giant Leap? When Jake was interviewed for the UK's Channel 5 News back in October 2007, he affirmed that his next or next-to-next project was on the moon (as it were). And so I thought that maybe UMP maybe next for Jake after Brothers.

But then we hear that Nailed has a startdate of April 14. Not only that, it's actual production, according to IMDb, began in January. It is due to film in South Carolina and Connecticut and, possibly not coincidentally, the ACLU charity site had this prize on its bidding list a short time ago: 'The winner of this auction lot will visit Gyllenhaal on the set of his latest film in Connecticut, at a mutually agreeable date from the end of March through April 2008.'

No more has been heard of the Unnamed (or Badly named) Moon Project until this week and the imminent release of UMP director Doug Liman's new film Jumper. This UGO feature on Jumper was published this week:

UGO: What can you tell me about your upcoming moon colonization project?
DL: It's with Jake Gyllenhaal. We're in development on it. It's a script I wrote about ten years ago. I think the greatest accompanishment in our lifetime really was the Apollo program. And rather than just tell the history of the first lunar landing, I want to make it relevant to a young audience by having the group today recreate what the Apollo program did forty years ago.'

In another interview, with Coming Soon, Doug was asked: 'What's next for you? The writers' strike is over, and while I assume you want to rest because this has been a long journey, do you think you'll jump right into "Untitled Moon Project" next and will you actually go to the moon to stay in line with how you made this movie? Liman: Yeah, I'm thinking very seriously about that film, and I basically have two approaches to it. The movie would cost about $100 million to make, so how much would it cost to actually go to the moon and make an IMAX documentary instead? Could I spend $99 million going to the moon and a million dollars shooting an IMAX movie or is it going to be a fictional story. I think ultimately, it's going to be cheaper to make the movie than to physically go (to the moon).'

And to add further confusion on the projected start date for UMP's production, MTV's movie blog seems to indicate that Doug may be first doing a biopic of CIA agent Valerine Plame, starring Nicole Kidman.

So I'm completely none the wiser and as confused as ever. I'm beginning to think that we may have to wait for Jake in Space until after Nailed. But with filming to start on Nailed in April, we'll know soon enough. I don't know what it is about UMP, but it brings out the October Sky and Moonlight Mile in me.

Jake dances along to Rufus

One thing we do know is that Jake went to see WDW favourite Rufus Wainwright again, a couple of nights ago, with a couple of buddies, at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. According to one account: 'The crowd was fantastic. At one point in the middle of the show, Rufus was standing at the microphone trying to say something, but we are screaming so loudly and wouldn't let him speak. He loved it. He said, "I feel like Obama." The LA crowd definitely made him feel loved.'

'It was a seated venue, but a lot of the crowd got on their feet for 14th Street and Beautiful Child. It was fun to see Jake Gyllenhaal two rows behind us standing, dancing and singing his heart out to 14th Street. After Beautiful Child Rufus said, "when I wrote that song I thought how the hell am I going to sing that!......I sing it every night now."' Jake's certainly seen Rufus enough to have all the words learned by heart but it really is so good to hear of Jake having such a good time - and to a track as great as 14th Street too. This picture shows Rufus attending the Zodiac NYC party back in the Spring of 2007 - almost a year ago. The picture below that is gratuitous.

Where is everyone?! I hate posting first:(

It is all very confusing isn't it? I have to admit, I'm more into the idea of Jake as a dodgy sex mad politician in a dark comedy than an astronaut, so I'd be quite happy for him to do Nailed first. I know we disagree on this WDW ;) The Moon Project sounds like the sort of thing that would take quite a while to put together at least I'm guessing that, what with special effects and everything, so if they want to release it for the 40th Anniversary of the Moon landing they can't leave it too long. Just have to wait and see, I supppose...

Glad to hear Jake is out and about having fun. Lord knows he must need it. ((Jake)))

Hey TL - good to see you :D I guess everyone's romancin' - Mr WDW is working away so it's just me, a bunch of roses, a box of chocs, a bottle of wine and a selection of Jake vids - but which to choose...

No, no, no.... I want Jake in Space first. But I fear you may be right and we're going to get roguish scandalous politician Jake first - actually, maybe that doesn't sound so bad ;) Great to see Jake having fun!

twistedlogic said...

Oh yeah, I pretty much forgot about Valentine's Day, what with me being sad and single:( Don't have any wine or chocolates either, but I do have Jake DVDs - one out of three ain't bad I suppose;)

Whatever happens, at least it looks like we might be getting plenty of Jake from Dec 2008 onwards. I can't believe it's only been four months since Rendition, it feels like a lot longer! When Brothers comes out, it'll be over a year since we had new Jake in the cinema! I know we all favour quality over quantity where Jake's concerned, but 14 months!! Damn...:(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL - The Jake DVDs sound good. I reckon I may put one on now and then I should get some good dreas - usually works. Next year will be so busy with Jake but this year, hmmmm. Quality vs quantity? Can I have both?

twistedlogic said...

Oh hun, if it was up to me we'd have a new top quality Jake film at least once a month! Trying to be philosophical here and tell myself we'll appreciate the Jake overload even more for having gone without for so long, but to borrow a phrase, it's not working:( At least we have the Rendition DVD to look forward to, that should keep us busy;D
Hope you get those sweet dreams:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

You too TL xx Less than a week til Rendition :) At least we know Jake's busy making more for us. That's a good thought. Sweet dreams *)

It's not fair, when I went to see Rufus, I got Snow Patrol and David Cameron (yes, that Tory), while others get to see Jake dancing to 14th Street....

It's an election year... I think they are trying to get "Nailed" out soon... as long as Jake's in it - I'll go watch it.

Aww... thanks for the bonus picture at the end. I'll be off to no-internet-land tomorrow.

have a great weekend, everyone.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird! When Ruby and I saw Rufus we got just Rufus (love Snow Patrol - saw them last summer - sigh - not quite so keen on Cameron...) but he was so great. Jake must know this show backwards!

That's a good point. If you're going to do a movie about Washington you may as well do it in election year. If Jake's in it you can bet I'll love it (so long as it's not called Proof). It's not what I expected from Jake but I'm ready to be amazed.

Lovely pic at the end isn't it... Good luck with your internet-free weekend :\

Hi everyone. I hope you all had a great V-Day. Even if you are single you always have Jake. I think that my boyfriend pretty much know that he shares it with Jake. ;)

I don't really care which new project comes first as long as we get a new project. It is going to be a long year w/o a new Jake movie. I guess the Rendition DVD will just have to keep me occupied. Jake in his boxers will any way.

Hi everybody,
As part of my post-BBM syndrome therapy I've been in the mountains... with a lousy internet connection. So now I am caught up on another continuing series of great great posts, thank you WDW.

I wonder if you guys have already discussed this issue, but since nobody seems thrilled with Gwyneth or Jessica Biel or Emmy Rossum as leading ladies (with good reason), who would be your ideal pick for costar with Jake in a future movie? I know, it might be a little soon to discuss that topic so soon after the loss of Jake's ultimate costar... but I was wondering in this case which actress would you really like to see costarring with Jake? He seems to do so well with ensemble pieces.

I like "Jake in Space" as the new title for UMP!! :D

Happy Valentine's to you all across the pond and stateside as well.

Libby

Hi everyone,
So glad to here Jake is out and about. I do like the idea of Jake in a comedy from this director and I know he can handle it and who knows this man may not give it to Jake like he gave it to the extra and to some of this other actors like Lilly Tomlin.

Anyway, here's more info from IMDB Pro, still without Jake's name but he is going to be in Connecticut and South Carolina and he has a two month or so break before filming starts.
Raising a glass here to Jake; take care dearest and have a little fun before going off to work again.

Sometimes non-spiritual teflonesque people need a break too.
Kate feel free.

Ok, I have to finally come forward and say this. For weeks I have been waiting, and I think a lot of others have been too, for Jake to make some sort of appearance, or "appearance" of his sadness over the death of Heath Legdge. He has been reported to not have attended any of the ceremonies, nor his funeral. I find this disgraceful if that is the truth. I don't want to hear a damn thing about Jake's new movies, or old interviews, or see pictures of him, until he comes out of this shell and shares his grief. He must know that others need to know how he feels, so we can move on too.

There, I said it.

Sorry Wrestlervic, but I can't agree with a word of that. Just because Jake is in the public eye that doesn't give us the right to demand that he 'shares' his grief with us - I've seen nobody calling for statements from Christian Bale, Lily Cole, Maggie G etc etc, all of whom worked with, and were great friends of Heath's, yet some people seem to think Jake owes us something. Well, he doesn't, he owes us nothing, however he copes with the loss of a friend is down to him, and I just hope it's working for him.

Jake is not our property, he has no obligation to tell us about his grief, and personally, Jake speaking publically about Heath isn't going to make me feel any better about what happened.

Plus, there are credible reports that he was at both LA services, the funeral was always unlikely due to filming commitments.

Morning everyone - Friday at long long last.

Hi Bird Girl, definitely a long year. I try and tell myself that we need the long working years to give us the red carpet years, but even so. Yep the Rendition DVD will have its compensations :)

Good to see you again, Libby. Hope you had a good break up there. I liked Emmy myself, but the female co-star I wouldn't mind seeing repeated is Jennifer. I'm looking forward to seeing how Jake and Natalie are together on the big screen. But yeah, one co-star does come to mind, Heath. Hope you had a good night :)

Hey Sass. Gotta admit this David Russell scares me to death! I'm not that keen on his track record. But I suppose Jake must know all this - maybe he's getting his boxing gloves ready.

Hi Wrestler Vic. I don't feel that way myself and none of us knows what Jake is feeling. I hope you come back to Jake at some time.

The deletion was a duplicate.

Enjoy your Friday everyone - off to find a cuppa.

Morning Agent K - we were posting at the same time :) I tend to agree with you. I prefer Jake left in peace.

I just wish people would separate Jake and Heath from Jack and Ennis.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - I think most people do, hopefully. In a way it's a reflection of how incredible they were in those roles, breathing life into them as they did. But the loss of Heath is bound to affect people in different ways. It makes me, for instance, want to appreciate Jake and his movies more.

"I just wish people would separate Jake and Heath from Jack and Ennis."

Some people I know are Heath fans, but don´t love BBM as we do (unbelievable but true) and they would never expect "statements" from Jake. They see him as one of his colleagues - nothing more.

IMO Jake will never discuss Heath or make statements - people will have to live with it and move on.

Interesting sidenote: Reese W. did an interview with EOnline and "Things she did not discuss with us include (a) the passing of Heath Ledger and (b) the man she is often photographed with, Jake Gyllenhaal."

Who would want to discuss anything to do with Jake with EOnline.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon, it's interesting thinking about it from the Heath perspective - what his non-Brokie fans 'expect'.

I think I'm going to go and listen to 14th Street now.

The reviewer in Dagens Nyheter, Sweden's most influential daily quality newspaper, writes today about the character Douglas Freeman in Rendition: "...Jake Gyllenhaal's interpretation of this involuntary hero is without a doubt the most attractive about the movie."

The headlines to this long review tell you why it only gets a "3." out of "5." points: Smart and thrilling. In spite of torture and an important mission "Rendition" does not shake you up.

The reviewer explains her standpoint: A good rule for movies could be: If you necessarily must show torture it has to shake you up down into the deep that we see no other choice than becoming active members in Amnesty or dedicate our lives to sombre authorships having given up hope about humanity.

In case you wonder the reviewer, Kerstin Gezelius, really means what she writes.

G'morning, all - my V day happiness was the return of dear friend from a coupla weeks in Cuba working in small rural village - he is the friend who took flowers and poems to Heath memoriams.

Jake is my valentine so thank you WDW for the Vanity Fair portrait - companion to the one on my fridge.

Hope this is a good day for all.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Pia - that's good to hear your friend's back home. Aso glad to hear you've got Jake on your fridge, I've got the California Republic star on mine (thanks Rubes xx), but Jake is all over my walls and shelves :D

Have a good day, is it a little less snowy and slushy today?

Hey WDW its wicked cold, and everyibody's chopping ice from their walks and drives.

I dunno about the moon. Whad did Robert Frost say, about dying by fire or ice. "from what I've taksted of desire, I;ll take fire - " something like that

Dimitar Berbatov's on my fridge :D

Still not sure how I feel about Nailed - it's not Jake being a villin, that I look forward to, it's more Jessica Biel, to me she's one of those identikit Hollywood starlets, completely bland - I'd much rather see him with someone feistier and more individual

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Blimey Pia, that sounds horrid :(

Agent K, I cannot wait to see Jake as a villain :D I feel a little bit mean getting at Jessica as I've never seen anything she's done - just pics of her out with the lovely JT. Maybe she'll surprise us? But what an odd role...

Anonymous said...

I think it's Jake being Matilda's godfather makes people think he was close to Heath.

Anonymous said...

Im godmother to a child, helped birth him, and he knows that we have a kind of spiritual bond. No longer close with his mother, nor himself, he's doing beautifully well. Certainly no expectation of "raising him" should anything happen to his mother - there is family and closer friends, for that.

Im sure Jake and his family paid respects to Heath's family at some point, glad this was private. There will probably be some memorial fund for a cause to which all friends will contribute.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That is true, anon, but I do agree with Pia that such a role can mean different things to different families, especially as time moves on. And again I stress that I'm glad it's all been in private.

Anonymous said...

Jake being the godfather of Matilda doesn't mean Heath and him were best friends. Jake's best friend is Chris. It's true that only Brokeback fans expect a statement from Jake, but he's not the only co-star who didn't give a statement, mind you!

With all due respect, I think we should leave Heath out of this blog, it's a blog dedicated to Jake. His fans want talk about him, his interviews and movies old and new.

I'm glad Jake enjoyed the concert.

Anonymous said...

There was also another godparent, a friend of Michelle, who was early on the scene -

just sayin'

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi anon - thanks for commenting. This is most definitely a Jake site because I am above all else a Jaker (and proud of it!) but I'm also a Heath fan and a bit of a Brokie and so Heath will always have a place here.

It is true that I can never talk enough about Jake and his movies ...I'm glad Jake enjoyed the concert - and who wouldn't enjoy a Rufus concert? I've been listening to Rufus while I work today.

twistedlogic said...

Got home earlier to find Proof showing on Sky Movies, which was a nice surprise. Not that I'm a big fan of Proof, but it's always nice to see Jake when I'm not expecting him:) And it made me think that, however awful Jessica Biel may or may not be(I don't know anything about her so I can't really say) she's got to have more chemistry with Jake than Gwyneth "laugh a minute" Paltrow!
Has anyone who's ordered Rendition from PlayUsa had an email yet to say it's been despatched? I haven't heard from them yet and I'm getting a bit anxious:( I want that DVD,like, yesterday!!!

Anonymous said...

"There was also another godparent, a friend of Michelle, who was early on the scene -

It's likely she is closer to Michelle than Jake was to Heath!

Anonymous said...

^ ^ ^ ^

I assumed so

agent_krycek said...

The lady in question is one of Michelle's closest friends.

None of us have any idea what's passed between Jake and Heath's loved ones, and I'm getting sick of people using his lack of a public statement as a stick to beat him with, he's handled it privately, as he handles most of his private life, and that how things should stay.

Anonymous said...

I didn't notice anyone beating Jake with a stick. Most fans seem to be worried about him.

twistedlogic said...

Agent Krycek,I agree with you and I think most, if not all, of the regulars here feel the same way. People who come here just to bring the subject up are just doing so to stir things and have their own not-so-hidden personal agenda, so I think the best thing to do is to ignore them and not give them the satisfaction of giving them the argument they want.

Back to Jake, I just watched the Ellen "I Will Survive" clip, which I'd forgotten about until now. ROFL!!! As someone who's been known to do the occasional turn on the karaoke (albeit, I must stress, only under the influence of a lot of alcohol) I'm impressed beyond words;D That's one hell of a sexy wiggle our boy's got going on there!:D

Anonymous said...

I dunno if Id call it a wiggle, TL, that's a bump and grind, dirty dancing, if I ever saw it. And he is GOOD! (well we know that :) :)

Anonymous said...

p.s. the entire video is a delight, high energy celebration of life.

Ruby said...

Jake dances like my father-in law in that Ellen clip!!

well, maybe not the bum-wiggle....

Good to hear of Jake at Rufus (again). I've sung along loudly to 14th Street myself a few times. Mostly in the car so as not to inflict it anyone else though.

Just got back from shopping - settling down with a sticky bun and a corona with a big chunk of lime :)

Hey TL! My order at Playusa still says preordered - not good. I was hoping we'd have them for Tuesdy, probably not now :( I totally agree about that - Jessica may well be a lot better than Gwyneth with Jake.

Agent K, I agree with you, I'm totally tired of it too. Time to let Jake be.

Oh TL - that wiggle is poetry! I like your description of it Pia :)

Hey Ruby - hope you're feeling better xx

Coming to this post late, but just wanted to throw in my two penn'orth.

As far as "Nailed" and "Jake In Space" are concerned,I'll be happy whichever comes first, because I like the sound of Jake as villain in an off-beat black comedy and I was a "child of the moon-shot era" and as such find the "Giant Leap" project really exciting.

I think it was Sass who mentioned that Jake would be filming in South Carolina! I must tell my best-Brokie-friend in the States because she lives in Charleston,SC!

WDW,I'm so glad you have declared that there will always be room for Heath on this Jake-centred blog. Although none of us can second-guess exactly how close Heath and Jake were in the recent past, both of them were happy to admit during the publicity for the film that "Brokeback" had forged a "unique bond" between them and had brought them very close. Jake in particular was very vocal in his avowal that he and Heath had become "best friends". He always gave the impression that Heath was anything but "just another co-star".

His going into virtual hiding, with reports of his devastation when Heath died, obviate the need for any public statement (and nobody has a right to expect one,if he wants to keep his feelings private that is his choice and probably the wisest, safest one).

Must say that I hope the report that he was having a good time with friends at the Rufus concert are accurate. It doesn't mean that he's forgetting if he's ploughing on with life, but hopefully it means he has begun to heal a little.

Anonymous said...

My sense has been, from Jake's comments, and seeing J and H and in fact all of the cast on a sort of Brokeback high post filming - and why not? - - that Jake, and Heath really came to love each other - and I dont mean romantically. Ang said these guys were a real pair, and they obviously were! Ang said, young, innmocent - DDL aid: beautiful! the story was beautiful, the film was beautiful, and seems to me everypeeps fell in love with everypeeps.

A friend of mine in the theatre says it always happens - and these people were at a high altitude which does have its effect, to begin with - and, man, one can get high on Annie P.s story.

I have seen no evidence that J and H were best friends in RL. They seem to have diffrent friends, diffrent life styles, etcetc.

It was an interesting question raised by one of us: do actors distance from their roles more easily than viewers distance from the stories?

I would guess that some do and some dont. Anybody have any stats for this. Give me stats. I love stats.

And I love knowing I'll see Jake in his boxers before the month is over. . . .

Nadine, I love your sensibility -

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia - we were posting at the same time. I've always thought that Jake and Heath distanced themselves from Jack and Ennis pretty quickly. Jake had to go straight into Jarhead afterall. Some things you may need to leave behind while always being grateful for what has been given.

In that case, a Jake Gyllenhaal fansite is not the best place for you.

"... until he comes out of this shell and shares his grief. He must know that others need to know how he feels, so we can move on too."

He cannot know something so utterly irrational. Guess you'll have to "move on" without Jake being foreced to publicly share "his grief".
