Jake - 'Hi to everyone on the internet!' The Empire Awards and Naomi's speech

It's been a while since we've watched a video of Jake talking about his films and I was definitely ready to see this, not least because it begins with Jake giving us all a wave and saying 'Hi to everyone on the internet!' For those of you who love to hear Jake speak in foreign tongues, he also says a few French words. For this is a French video, le Fin de l'Inocence, and its subject is Jarhead.

As always, Jake is fascinating to listen to, especially, for me, in these two sections: 'If you has asked me before I made this film, I probably would have said that I'm a pacifist, I guess. But after I think I recognised a lot of aggresion in myself that I didn't know. And the thrill of holding a weapon in my hands and just sort of thinking of killing or being killed, just all those ideas that run through your mind when you're playing a part like this. After that I think I walked the line - I walked the line! But, ultimately, I don't think that war is really the appropriate answer for anything.'

'I hope it's never the end of innocence, you know. I mean, I think that's the thing that keeps me wanting to do like... to keep acting. But I do think that I grew up a lot while I was making the movie and I think that Sam's process - Sam Mendes' process in directing, you know, I think he empowers you and he makes you feel that nothing you can do is wrong. And I think when somebody says that to you, when they say nothing you can do is wrong, you can take risks, you can make choices. That really forces you to grow up. I don't think that it ends your innocence but that definitely forces you to progress and change.'

After watching the UK MTV Making of Zodiac special and listening to the Zodiac commentary with Jake and Robert Downey Jr - not to mention the Making of documentary that is included in the Director's Cut of Zodiac - it makes one realise how very different Jake's experience was making these two contrasting movies. One was perhaps more difficult than the other, with the physical determination and agression necessary for Jarhead perhaps easier to endure than the mental straitjacket demanded by the procedural and verbal Zodiac. And yet Jake responded to both, giving us and his directors two great performances.

The Sony Ericsson Empire Awards - Zodiac's nominations

The Oscars, and the BAFTAs for that matter, may have decided not to acknowledge Zodiac in any shape or form, but Empire magazine (arguably Britain's premier film publication) announced the shortlist for the Sony Ericsson Empire Awards today. This shortlist, which is voted upon by readers of the magazine and its website, moviegoers one and all, lists Zodiac three times.

Zodiac is nominated for Best Thriller and Best Film and David Fincher is nominated for Best Director. Unfortunately no mention is made of Jake Gyllenhaal, or the rest of Zodiac's cast, nor of Rendition. The awards are presented at a ceremony in London on 9 March. You can read the full shortlist here. Good luck Zodiac and David Fincher.

A short while ago, I posted a link to a MTV half-hour special on Zodiac (mentioned above), which was only avaible to watch in the UK. Stephanie at I Heart Jake has now kindly and expertly merged these video files into one and uploaded them so that everyone can enjoy them. You can find it here. Thanks to Twisted Logic for putting the video up on YouTube.

Naomi's speech on the relationship between author and reader

Last Saturday, the Scripter Award was presented at a gala dinner held, rather appropriately and yet incongruously, in a library - the Doheny Memorial Library in Los Angeles. This award 'celebrates the art of adaptation, acknowledging both the authors of the original novel or novella and the screenwriters.' This year's event was linked to the Gyllenhaals doublefold - James Vanderbilt's adaptation of Robert Graysmith's Zodiac was a contender and the head of the selection committee is Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal. Unfortunately, Vanderbilt didn't win, with the award going to No Country for Old Men, which was adapted by Joel and Ethan Coen.

Here is an account of the event, which 'managed to tie the different atmospheres together into a celebratory environment, yet one that was intellectually sober, where one was constantly reminded of the frequent inseparability of the triumphs and challenges of writing and adapting for the screen. In her introduction of the honorees, the head of the selection committee Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal, mother of actors Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal, spoke of the delicate art of "keeping the spirit of the story line intact, while turning it into something entirely different."'

'"Getting inside the intimate relationship an author makes with his reader to create a concrete picture of character and place without disturbing the author's original underlying intent [is difficult to do]," Gyllenhaal said at the event. "No wonder it so often fails. But sometimes it rises to the heights of perfection and provides insight and possibility that the reader alone would never come to."'

oh thank you for the video - first time i saw it.

how could the French bear to watch the film dubbed in French and missing out on Jake's voice?!!?? lol...

And good that Empire recognised Zodiac, it didn't stay in UK theatre for months for nothing!

Hey Winterbird - isn't it an amazing video! Jake melts my heart in it. He seems so young and earnest in it. I have no idea how anyone can watch a dubbed Jake...

Yes, good for Empire. This last year has gone so quickly, I can't help remembering the first time I saw Zodiac in LA back in March. Roll on Brothers.

Hi WDW, thanks for the comment, I miss u too. Also, thank you for all the additional posts since, as I've said before this is my 'safe' place to visit when I can't stand the rest. Been doing alot of skiing and getting ready for Florida trip during Winter break. Definetly have Spring fever although this winter has been filled with extremely memorable times as I think we all can say. Jake helps keep me grounded. If I knew him I know we would be best friends. I'll keep in touch, Vanna

So good to see you, CWG. Sounds like you've been busy out there in the fresh air. Skiing and Florida sound pretty good to me. I think we could probably all do with a holiday after this winter. Jake does me good too. Keep in touch, K x

Morning everyone - back to work - sigh. Hope you all have a good day, although, judging by the London papers, it looks like everyone in the US will be busy at the polls!

Morning!

I kind of think that Jake would support the eventual winner from the democrats camp. Cos...he believes "democrats make better lover", doesn't he?

This election at least has one definite good point - whoever got elected eventually, it will be better than Bush, right? oh... maybe not that homophobic Huckabee guy *yuk*

Morning Winterbird - that sounds like a very good reason for voting Democrat (and for dating one, for that matter...). I've been caught up in the Obama and Hillary duel and so know nothing about the Republicans at all. Makes our politics look very dull.

AP/NYT report that Heath's folks are back in Perth. Seems so far away. This time is unbearably long. I think I'll convert to another planet. And this country, that is, USA, is too damn big and noisy. Where to go, where to go?

Oh sorry Im mumbling. Good morning, y'all. Another dim day in the wilds of Massachusetts. Bears are giving birth in caves, Lambs are squeezing out their bairns, the owl with all its feathers is a-cold (Keats) it's Fat Tuesday,Super Tuesday - and like the half frozen hare limping through frozen fields (Keats) Im
missing Jake.

Liked the French video, thot it was especially well done. Watched a bit of BBMt in French haha

Sorry to be so downhearted. Love
to all -

Also in Italy we dubb foreign films, weird huh?:/
So the first time I saw Jake he was speaking Italian! :)

But after listening to his sweet little voice it became impossible to hear it dubbed...

I can honestly say that I have never seen a movie in which Jake was dubbed.

PIA, I'm in Massachusetts, too. It's dark and rainy here. I voted this morning. What can you do?

Chillinwitgyllen, I can relate better to Florida sunbathing than skiing.

In a better mood, now, not that the world needs to know this: what helped was returning dozy embrace to my desktop. I couldnt bear it, after Heath's death, for awhile, thot I had to give it up. Guess not. Made me smile and very happy to return that "moment of artless, charmed happiness in their separate, difficult lives. . . "

p.s. Yes, Paul, pretty dreary, eh? We've got slush and ice underneath, every's falling about.

Hi Pia - I'm so glad you're feeling a bit better this Fat Super Tuesday - it's just Pancake Day here and I have no ingredients and no time to buy any. One minute sunny the next pouring with rain. Just can't make up its mind.
And I'm glad that the dozy embrace came home.

Hey Xenia - I love the sound of the Italian language but the horror of a dubbed Jake! I'm glad when we saw Rendition in Rome they left it alone.

Paul - I'm definitely with you on the sun bit. I only have to look at snow and I fall over.

Just want to send some love to TL who's not feeling so good. Feel better soon xx

Hi all -

Loved your post, Pia. Don't be downhearted, I know that's hard to say. I loved the Jarhead video in French too, WDW. Jake at his thoughtful and earnest best. Enjoyed hearing Naomi's thoughts on adapting written works for the screen.

Your past posts about Heath have been very well done, WDW. :)

Greetings all. It is a cold stormy day here in the Mid-west too. Let's just hope that it doesn't effect the voter turn out. Being from Illinois and all I think that it's pretty obvious who I am backing.

Seeing Jakey dubbed in any language sounds pretty icky. I apologize to anyone who has to hear it.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks, Bertie. And I'm glad you've liked the posts about Heath. It really isn't easy so that's good to hear.

Hi Bird Girl - even over here in Blighty I can reckon on who you're voting for! Fortunately, I have seldom had to listen to a Dubbed Jake - phew. By contrast, I did see Jurassic Park dubbed into German many years ago and it had little impact on my understanding (or enjoyment) of the film.

Hi all,

Well a rainy day here although it is a buzz of activity with the the Super Tuesday (already voted and it was a hard choice between Hillary and Obama but I think I made the right vote!) and the Giants parade. :)

I love hearing Jake interviews and could not imagine his beautiful voice dubbed. Ick. Always nice to hear about Jake's very creative family. Good on Naomi.

Hope everyone in the UK is having a nice Pancake Day!

Hugs and get better wishes to ((TL)).

Love to all of you!

I am sure what ever your choice was it was a good one considering you voted Democratic. :)

Enough of my political agenda. I will stop now.

Hey Get Real - I've gone all political for my new post, even though I'm a Brit! I do think I'd find it a hard choice. I'm having to postpone my pancake day as I have no magic ingredients. I thought it was next week...

And yes, good on Naomi!

No need to stop, Bird Girl - I'm really interested by it :)
