The release of Rendition in the cinemas and theatres of Australia has given us a new interview with Jake Gyllenhaal, in which he doesn't only discuss his role as Douglas Freeman, he also reflects on the legacy of Brokeback Mountain for himself - how it has made people react to him. But when it comes to Rendition, I found it interesting that Jake says that he didn't like the scene where he grabs the suspect's neck, finding it unbelievable behaviour. I also enjoyed the idea that Jake likes to see posters of his films, lining the streets of LA.
"You choose a movie because of the structure of the story," he says. "Overall, people would be ill-advised in the movie business to choose movies because of political matters. We're in the business of humans."
Jake found the scene where he grabs the suspect's neck implausible because he believed Douglas, in that position, would have been governed by process and not passion - the antithesis to the motivations that drive an actor. "I live in a world where you explore the emotional background of these characters but the reality of this job is it requires detail - precise levels of detail - and that's what I was led into when I was fact-checking the character."... "I never look at it that way," he says. "It always throws me off if I think, 'How are people going to respond?' I do really care about the audience and what they would think but I also need to know what I can truly do."
And soon Jake makes comparisons with Brokeback: "Politically,... I didn't think it was a statement that was too outlandish. I also didn't think the same thing of Brokeback Mountain, strangely enough.. I grew up in a world where my godfathers are gay, my mother's best friends, half of them are gay men, so I've been brought up in a world where that's assimilated and understood, which is very different to the rest of the world."
'His feelings about this level of public recognition are mixed but mostly positive. "Sometimes I revel in it and I'm also disturbed by it," Gyllenhaal says. "There are times when I've been like ... it makes me laugh... I remember driving down the street about the time Brokeback Mountain came out. I look over [nods, to the imaginary driver of the next car] 'What's up?' He looked at me and he's like, 'Fag!'... I was like, 'Wow! [laughing] Awesome!' That's amazing, that somehow that infiltrated into this person so they were like ... something I had done, the work I had been involved in, had stirred up these feelings. And yet it saddened me and angered me... There is a real power to these things and I revel in stirring the pot," Gyllenhaal says, referring to both the films and his roles in them... "Do I hope there's some discussion? Yeah. I love it. That's what I think this is about. It's about saying what's true."
"It's great when I drive down the streets in Los Angeles and I see a poster with me and Reese and Meryl Streep and Alan Arkin on it and it just says Rendition. Whether people see the movie or not, they're gonna go, 'rendition?' When they see it in a newspaper, 'what is that?' That to me is cool." You can read more here.
Incidentally, Ennis and Jack have been voted by UK cinema goers as one of the top ten onscreen couples, as have Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader's characters in Secretary. Although the fact that Shrek and Donkey came top of the list (tying with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman) makes me wonder. As the report comments, it may be unusual to have a gay couple in the list but it's possibly even more unusual for it to include a non-human couple... 'It's an unusual choice'.
WDW's Hollywood Bound
Yes - it's Oscar time and that means only one thing - WDW (and me) is off to Los Angeles for a week of palm trees, blue skies (hopefully) and bright stars. So, all being well, during the next eight days I hope you'll join me in LA. Bring suntan lotion and good walking shoes. And if anyone wishes to suggest a place to visit, I'm all ears. The next post will be from Beverly Hills. Now, if anyone would like to help me pack....
Includes pictures from IHJ.

WDW, I haven't the slightest intention of helping you to pack. Talk to you later, though *
I make Jake right about that scene, it was most un-Douglas.
Jake speaks up, for sure - in the Zodiac commentary he is often a counter voice.
It's always reassuring to hear him speak so confidently - and courageously, in my view.
God what a beautiful man.
You too are beautiful WDW - so looking forward to your posts from
"screwy, ballyhooey Hollywood!"
Hooray and all that.
Jack and Ennis will continue to sweep many couple awards for many years to come :)
Have a warm and fun trip in LA! If you bump into... you know whom... stay calm and report to us immediately!
Lucky you WDW! Have a fabulous trip to LA. Keep us updated. ;)
Ah, Jake never ceases to amaze me. Another very interesting interview with Jake being courageous, as Pia said. He is beautiful indeed, inside and out.
Just finished packing - need a drink... Anouska, you'd be such a good packer *)
That scene was very un-Douglas but I did like seeing jake act like that ;)
Pia - thank you! I'm so glad that in a big way you will be with me in that mad, fun place. Jake is such a beautiful man, and even more so when he says these things.
Winterbird - Thanks! I'll do my best :D Just the thought makes me weak...
Hi Get Real - I love this interview. I'm going to miss having more of them while we wait for Brothers.
WDW, if you stay long enough in the West Coast and can take a side trip, perhaps you can hook up with some of us at ennisjack, who are meeting in the deserts outside Las Vegas next weekend. :-)
Tpe - that sounds amazing - I love it round there with the red rock desert - just stunning. I spent some time there last winter. Unfortunately, I come home that weekend so can't make it - I hope you have an amazing time in that beautiful big open space :)
I'm sure there will be other chances to meet in the near future. :-) In the meantime, have a safe trip!
BTW, perhaps you would consider attending the BBM screening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on August 4 (Monday), 2008 at 7:30 PM -- part of the AMPAS “Great To Be Nominated” series.
A number of us at ennisjack will be again meeting in a lakehouse outside Seattle the weekend before this, but some of us are planning to fly in to LA on that day to attend the screening.
I am aware that you have to travel much further, but perhaps you may be tempted? ;-)
You certainly know how to pick beautiful places, Tpe :) Thanks for letting me know about the dates. I'll definitely be in LA again this year so I'll make a note of the dates. Thanks for letting me know.
I am just trying to put you in the path of temptation. :-)
Although admittedly, the Oscars and AMPAS have become anathema to a number of us Brokies, I look forward to reading your report for the coming weekend!
I know you will have a wonderful time!
You're doing a good job, Tpe! I know, I have mixed feelings about the Oscars too, as any Brokie would, but I love the glitz of LA at Oscar time - a world away from 'normal' everyday life. Pure escapism.
Another great post - have a great time in Hollywood, WDW!
That was one of the most difficult scenes for me in Rendition as well - Anwar is already physically and psychologically weakened and looks so fragile, and Douglas shocks himself, I think, when he realizes how easy it would be to take advantage of the power and control he has in the situation, almost like a mob mentality kind of thing. He realizes it, and also realizes that he doesn't want to be like that. It's a turning point, I think.
I can't believe someone said that to our Jake on the freeway! Just awful. :(
And, I have always felt that Ennis and Jack would be on the list of the greatest on-screen lovers of all time!
Thanks, WDW, and I know we'll be the first to know if you run into You-Know-Who in H'wood! :)
Thanks for that comment, Bertie. You've spoken my mind. I always thought myself that this scene was critical because it's the moment where Douglas has to know for himself that Anwar won't say anything. He's seen the torture and has to know if he can elicit the information. Then he sees what he's capable of and it still produces nothing and so he knows it'll never work.
It is awful that Jake should have been subject to homophobic comments in the street because of his choice of roles :(
I'll be keeping my eyes peeled ;)
Thanks for bringing us that Aussie interview with Jake,WDW. still can't get used to reading "the late Heath Ledger" but that apart,it was an interesting and entertaining interview.
I'm with Jake and everyone else on the un-Douglas-ness of the "throttling" scene. And TL,perhaps you and I can feel a little less guilty about hating the Paps but loving some of the photos, in that Jake too is ambiguous about the public attention he gets, having a love/hate relationship with his life in the public eye and the attention, good or bad, that he gets from press and public alike.
As for Jack and Ennis, for me there will never be a more perfect on-screen couple.
Happy Holidays in Hollyweird,WDW. Take care, have fun and keep 'em peeled for a handsome man with a gorgeous Alsatian dog. If you should see him, tell him Nadine says "Wear your chuffing seat-belt!!"
Thanks so much for this interview WDW:) I've not read the whole thing but the highlights you posted are really interesting. That scene Jake talks about was definitely one of the stand out scenes for me and a pivotal moment in the film and Jake played it brilliantly. You sense his frustration building when he's tellng Anwar to explain the phonecalls so they "can all get out of here", so you know how desperate he is just to put an end to it and you kind of see it coming but it's still shocking when he actually goes for Anwar like that. I can't wait to see it again, to pick up on all those nuances I know I must have missed at the cinema.
As for that anecdote about the moron in the car, I totally get Jake's reaction. On the one hand it's hard not to laugh at that kind of stupidity and ignorance but it does make me very sad and angry too that that kind of mentality still exists in this day and age:( But good on Jake for "stirring the pot" - sometimes that's the only way to get things to change.
WDW, have a safe trip and a brilliant time in sunny LA! Give my love to you-know-who if you see him:) And ask him where he got his t-shirt (or if I can have his - preferably unwashed!:D)
A huge, huge hug to you (((Nadine))) xx I'll be looking out for that handsome man and, should I see him, I'll pass on that message ;D You take care too.
Hey TL - you write brilliantly about that scene. I think it was pivotal for Jake's character too. I will be looking out for that shirt for you :D x
Hey Nadine! Good to see you:) And even when we're posting at the same time, you still manage to say what I'm thinking but forgot to say before ;) You're right, it does make me feel better about the whole pap thing, knowing that Jake himself has mixed feelings about it too. Btw Jake, if you're reading you might want to "revel in it" wearing that dark blue shirt with the first few buttons undone next time you're being papped. just a suggestion...;)
And yes, Ennis and Jack are the ultimate on screen couple imo, no one can ever come close. SNIT - I rest my case.
Thanks WDW:) And don't worry if you can't find the shirt - just bring me Jake instead;)
No problem, TL, but you may have to share him :D G'night xx
I'm happy to share, there's plenty of Jake to go round;) Nite hun, have a safe trip and let us know when you get there xx
The New York Times Carpetbagger in his Oscar Predictions says this: HEATH LEDGER He should have had a long career, making many laps as a presenter and an honoree. This is his year for all the wrong reasons, and you will be hearing his name recalled in memoriam and sadness.
(clear skies WDW!)
Thank you for saying that, TL. I wholeheartedly agree with you. Through it all Jake has always taken the high road eve when faced with ignorance. Same goes for the nasty paps who try and get a reaction. Jake just stays the course and rises above it. Good on him!
Wow. You have a great time WDW! I hope you get to bump into a certain someone!
I'm really looking forward to your reports!
Morning everyone :D Checking in from the airport. Hope you all have a good day and I'll catch up with you all later.
Thanks Rosie :D
Morning peeps,
It's 4:45 and snowing in the big apple:):)
Have a great time WDW!
I await your first report from Hollyweird:)
I wish Gavin Hood could have worked the deleted scenes in somehow... maybe worked with the screenwriter or whatever...because Jake is smokin' hot in the scenes with his GF. *thud*
Two more days until Oscars.
I like that.
Morning Sass! Blimey, you're up early :D Wrap up in the snow.
I'm looking forward to seeing Hollywood get ready for the Oscars :D
ya, I watched the two diff vids of Jake leaving the medical building, and the most astounding thing of all is, after the nasty pap yells out about Heath, after Jake frees the pap's camera cord from his door ever so kindly, Jake actually waves goodbye to the pap(s). I don't think to the shouting pap, I think the shouting pap is behind his car but there are paps to the side and to the front, and Jake gives a hand wave as he is driving away. You can see it in the still-shot over at IHJ. That Jake is a-maaaaaazing!!!! He even waves to those freakin' paps?!!!!!!!!!
To "stir the pot"; I believe that is what is driving Jake forward, generally speaking.
Have a good time on the West Coast, WDW!
Herman
Jake is a beautiful, intelligent and soulful man, I figured he might have faced crap like some moron insulting him...>:(
Have a safe and exciting trip WDW.
And bring back some treat for us! :)
I don't think anyone will forget Brokeback. Hollywood seems to have forgotten how much money it made and doesn't seem to be in any hurry to make another mainstream movie involving a gay couple (only if it is a comedy or one gay character who isn't a main character)
Looks like BBM is a fluke in their eyes
Have fun in LA. I wonder if Jake is presenting at the oscars?
trekfan
Hi Sass, and every other sweet peeps, its snowin' all day and Jake and Ang (Caution, Lust) and photos of Heath memorial in Soho waiting for me in my PO Box. should I have pizza for breakfast since my company's not going to make it for supper tonight cause of the weather?
Jake with his background is just the person to deal cooly with 'phobic nastiness and is a good model for everybody, in my view. doesnt get his boxers in a twist about it, doesnt blow his top, keeps a steady course of respectfulness - I dunno, one of these days my hero may crumble, but so far, he delivers! he's a real mensch! and so's Atticus.
Fum to read the NYT carpetbagger who is in LA chatting up folks here and there, and knowing that our own darlin' WDW is in flight.
It's a snowy day here in New England. Lucky you, WDW, to be on your way to sunny Southern California! But, all is not lost, I plan later today to make some popcorn, curl up on the couch and watch my new copy of Rendition! I'm excited that Sunday is Oscar night too, it would be nice if Jake were presenting! :)
"Hollywood seems to have forgotten how much money it made and doesn't seem to be in any hurry to make another mainstream movie involving a gay couple (only if it is a comedy or one gay character who isn't a main character)"
Not so. Sean Penn is starring in "Milk". BBM really was a trailblazer.
When I saw that scene with Douglas Freeman holding the other guy's throat, I thought it was implausible. I'm glad to hear that Jake felt the same way.
Hi everyone :D Phew made it to the hotel and the internet works - hooray. This is a small hotel, with a nice pool, but no bar, so I've got to do something about that straight away.
Very considerate of Virgin Atlantic to have had Rendition on the plane today :D There were certain scenes I watched more than a few times.
Off to stretch my legs, they need it :D
Have a wonderful trip WDW! Glad to hear you got there safely. Yes, we do have 5 inches of snow on the ground here in Philadelphia. I hope you get to make a visit to the magical kingdom of Brentwood. Coffee at Joan's on Third? Rendezvous at the infernal "medical building"? If you find the obnoxious video pap lurking around the dentist's office please smack him upside the head, from me. Or else get in his face with a camera and ask insensitive, intrusive questions! That'll teach him! :) Just kidding....Have a great time! Can't wait to read your posts. I wish you many good sightings of our hero! Libby
Hey WDW! Glad to hear you got there safe and sound:) Well done to Virgin, that's some high class entertainment;) Hope you get the bar situation sorted! Looking forward to hearing about your adventuresxx
Very considerate of Virgin Atlantic to have had Rendition on the plane today :D
Wow, WDW, sounds like fate to me!
I enjoyed watching my Rendition DVD this afternoon, I loved some of the extras - the deleted scenes were great and I wish they had kept some of them, and the making of the film was fascinating, and well . . . "the scene" was too. ;)
I reckon you're right, TL and Bertie. Rendition was fated to be on my plane! Libby, Joan's is on my list for sure. I've just got back from a very long walk around BH - took in a 'certain medical center' and alley at back of dentists and then Rodeo Drive. Not a pap in site, not even Victorian Beckham ;) The local supermarket by the hotel is the Bristol Farms store that Jake was photographed out (red shirt, shorts) pushing a big trolley. What an amazing store! Nothing like it in the UK. Incredible fresh and organic choice. I bought a gorgeous bottle of wine - much better than the Californian wine I drink at home - which I'm now knocking back as way too tired to be outside :P
I'm also trying to work out these TV channels...
Glad you landed OK Kate, and to have Rendition on the plane....that's fantastic.
Enjoy yourself:)
Thanks Sass :D Off to sleep now - shattered.
