Last night, the BAFTA Awards included a film tribute to the movie stars and movie makers who have been lost over the last year. Always sad, this tribute was more moving than ever because it inevitably ended with Heath. For anyone who wasn't able to see it and would like to, here is the clip, which also records the sadness of the audience, noticeably Heath's co-star in Casanova, Sienna Miller.
'To be honest, I can't stand beans' - Jake talks Brokeback
The Berlin International Film Festival (BIFF?) is underway. One film showing there - Elegy - features Peter Sarsgaard. Past films that have made an impression at the festival include Candy. I'm using this as an excuse to post an interview Jake made with cinema.de to publicise Brokeback Mountain. As always, translations are mine and so any errors are also mine and not Jake's. This post includes new old photographs of Jake out for a stroll in New York City back on 2 March 2007, which IHJ kindly posted for us today.
When asked if it's right to call Brokeback Mountain the 'gay cowboy movie', Jake replies: 'Actually, only people who don't know the film can say that. For me, it's a moving drama about life and love. Years ago, when my father spoke to me about my desire to become an actor, he said to me that a good film always has to be a little ahead of its time. The job of an actor in a film like this is to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. My father's advice impressed me so much that I immediately accepted Brokeack Mountain.'
'Does the film offer a new definition of masculinity?' Jake replies that Hollywood offeres stereotypes to define what's male, which doesn't make it easy for normal men. 'I find the sensitivity side of maleness most interesting. Men are courageous if they can talk about their feelings... In that way, hopefully Brokeback Mountain helps a little to correct concepts of maleness.'
Jake also says that having a stuntman jump off the cliff for him in Brokeback (unlike Heath) was nothing to do with not wanting to be seen naked! He wanted to avoid the risk of getting hurt so close to the casting for Jarhead, but 'You're welcome to write I'm a coward!'
Jake also discusses the preparation he needed to go through before filming the more intimate scenes with Heath and says that 'I wanted to be alone and concentrate before the scenes, in make-up in the morning.'
On what it was like to kiss a man instead of a girl: 'It's really interesting, because all the journalists want to know that. If I'd killed him instead, no one would ask what it feels like to kill another man...' And whether having to kiss a man or a woman on camera 'There is always a slight discomfort. But it's part of the job, so I do it.'
Jake is asked if he's known true love, he says no, and at 25 is gathering experiences. 'I find it strange when other young actors talk about love in interviews... At my age, you can only say if you're in love or not. That has nothing to do with love. Love is when you can survive crises together for a long time, and then still matter to each other. My parents could tell them...'
Incidentally, reminding me of a comment Jake made on Tonight with Jonathan Ross, Jake says that, after working with the animals on the film, 'I've often imagined living on a farm in the future.'
Finally, on whether Jake's a better cook than Jack Twist: 'This part of the role is very different from me. I love Italian food and I love studying cookbooks. One of my best friends is the chef at Babo's, a restaurant in New York. To be honest, I can't stand beans.'

O, man, WDW! Heart-breaker, love-maker, you've got quite a calling! Jake says he stays in a place where "the heart" - you do the same. yikes!
After a day of sunlight and RL frustration, you bring us back to places of the heart. Doncha wanna make movies, or something?
Ive been feeling really hurt, sorta like Ennis delivered a pumch from which Ive not recovered -
thanks, I was really struggling, today. how d'you do it?
p.s. sorry for all the typos Im a mess.
pps and is it really true that Jake is quoting BBMt lines, same as we do? this makes me quite happy. he's a fan, he's a fan, he's an effing fan! I knew it!
pps he's a fan of himself! I KNEW IT!
(sorry. Im having a hard time)
pass the tissues please. :(
yes, pass the effing tissues.
PLEASE!
I just love, love, love, love his pictures in a coat and a scarf!!!Thank you!!!
So I can assume that Jake didn't have baked beans on toast when he was staying in London? :P
Those old pictures of Jake and Chris are funny (OK, I mean Jake is gorgeous...) but look at how many clothes he's wearing and then look at Chris! Guess that's the difference between being raised in the East Coast and the West coast?
About the jumping the cliff scene... actually i was surprised that Heath did that scene by himself... i mean, it's a long distance shot, he really didn't have to... oh (((Heath)))
any tissues left?
(((Pia))) This post crashed my laptop (I took refuge with David Attenborough) but fingers crossed it's working again for the mo. Thanks more than I can say for your comments - I'm sorry you're struggling - I'm glad I was able to help a little - that's what I want to do :)
(((Ruby))) - I'm all out of tissues, used them all up...
Thanks Anon - aren't they great pics! I love to see Jake all bundled up against the cold :D
Hi Winterbird! Jake can't stand beans - sigh - he may not like one of my fryups then :( Jake sometimes looks a little delicate when he's away from California climes and I do find that funny too. And I always love to see pics of Chris.
Heath was great jumping off the cliff. I read once that Jake has vertigo - maybe that was a contributing factor.
I just added a bit more of the interview to the post.
really? I have vertigo too! I can't get on any merry-go-round, that's throw up guaranteed
(*filing new item to "stuff I share with Jake, deduct Heinz Baked beans from grocery list*)
(((Pia))) Sorry you're having a bad time atm. I know what it's like (well, I'm sure we all do) but we're all here to help.
Thanks for finding and translating that interview, WDW. I love how Jake can be so self deprecating at times "YOu're welcome to call me a coward" Aww bless...and,as if! I wouldn't be surprised if Jake's vertigo was a contributing factor. I have vertigo too, just watching that cliff jumping scene makes me feel queasy, so I don't blame Jake one bit. And just think, if he HAD injured himself we might never have seen the glorious Jarhead scenes we all know and love, so Jake not jumping off cliffs is fine by me;)
Love those old/new pics too. So nice to see that beautiful face in all its shaven glory;) And I noticed the thing about the clothes too, Winterbird:D Again, I can relate to that too, cos I'm always cold compared to other people. At least Jake has the excuse of being used to sunnier climes, but I'm from London so I should be used to it...
You and Jake will have to look after each othe, Winterbird! Yes, don't give him beans but I think you'd get away with ravioli.
Just added a bit more. I must've been tired as I missed out a chunk!
(((TL))) I know it's hard - it's so great how everyone here looks out for everyone else. I'm trying to throw some Jake into the mix to help too :)
Yep, I don't want Jake putting any little bit of him at risk. The idea of him not having been able to do Jarhead :( I once fainted at school on a climbing frame so I sympathise!
I love to see Jake in that big coat and scarf. Whatever the season, Jake looks delicious :D
I think Jake was being ironic haha when speaking of wanting to be a farmer.
But I am against irony these days I find such tragic irony in Heath's death. No more beans! No more effing irony! And Im not kidding!
I am so glad I have that picture of Heath jumping off the cliff! I love male vulnerabily, not enuff of that in our world Onna these days we'll get a full frontal of Jake. We luv our guys so much! They have no idea!
We luv our guys so much! They have no idea!
Maybe they do, Pia *
Just read the extra bit you added WDW:) I'm always amazed at the way some people make such a big deal about two male actors showing love and tenderness towards each other but never bat an eyelid at two men being violent towards each other. It's a screwed up world, that's for sure. I'm very impressed by Jake's distinction between "loving" someone and being "in love". Talk about an old head on young shoulders...
OT: Sorry but I have to do this YESSSSSSSSSS! 2-0 to the Arsenal, top of the league 5 points clear! Thank you Man City, btw:)
TL - I don't know what came over me leaving that bit out! I'm glad yu went back to read it.
Wise head on our Jake's shoulders for sure. And I love how Jake wants to challenge the stereotypes.
"The job of an actor in a film like this is to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed."
Awesome.
Touching tribute to Heath at the BAFTAs (and all the others of course).
Hi TL,
Although I have an old head on even older shoulders (''computer-arm'') Being a foreigner I do not really understand the distinction:'
I'm very impressed by Jake's distinction between "loving" someone and being "in love".
Am I right in supposing the one means more "being very fond of" and the other means more to the side of "being madly captivated by"? And that "loving" equals the first and "in love" equals the other?
Sorry to have to ask, but once I but nearly 50 years ago a doctor gave me pills for the latter alternative, that I do think would have caused some problems with certain authorites nowadays.
I did change then, I have never flipped out again, like following a girl a hundred miles, but on the other hand I have since missed any really deep feelings, although I most certainly had had the reason for it. And then I alos mean really, really positive feelings.
Doctors, they have a job to be done, I do not envy them!
Herman
Jake may not like beans, but he's made of peanut butter ;-) . Otherwise, why would he talk about being called Jake Gooberballs? :-)
Actually, he could hardly call himself an Italian chef when it comes to soups, as many of them contain Italian green beans, garbanzos, fava beans, or Roman beans. One after-dinner snack that many Italians are fond of is snap beans, fresh out of the garden. Or, they'll roast and salt garbanzos (chick peas), which they call cecis. Roasted fava beans are another possibility.
Hey Narcissa - glad to see you :)
Hi Herman :) - for me - loving as opposed to being in love means it's forever. It feels like a big difference. Definitely more than just being fond of.
Hey Paul - I'm a big bean fan myself (although I'm willing to forego them next time I cook for Jake) but I cannot recognise one from another! I do know I don't like white ones but what they're called, who knows? :D
Hey Herman! I don't know if I can explain it properly, me having an empty head on old(ish!) shoulders, but basically I was refering to what Jake says about how "Love is when you can survive crises together for a long time, and then still matter to each other", I would agree with your definition of being "in love" as"being madly captivated by" but those feelings can be,and often are, fleeting. Of course, loving someone and being in love with them aren't mutually exclusive, but I think you can only say you truly love someone when the giddy, all-consuming "in love" phase fades, or is challenged, but those initial feelings change into something deeper. But that's just my opinion, what do I know? i've been "in love" more times than I can remember but I've only ever loved one man in my life, and in the end even that didn't work out, cos there's only so many crises and challenges you can go through before you realise that loving someone can sometimes be just as destructive as it can be a positive, uplifting thing.I dunno, I'm just rambling now...
TL - I love it when you go all rambling :D Nothing empty about your head. I love your new avvie by the way :)
Hey TL and Herman, let's "ramble".
I LUV to talk about LUV!
BBMT was an earthquake for many, claiming that there is a kinda love that counts, beyond the love we have for humankind, in general; and this includes amd perhaps is indicted by sexual love. BBMT the story and the film says that sexual love counts. And that we make cultural compromises that are loving but not neccessarily as truly binding as a more profound connection that often happens -
Amd which we all, somehow, desire.
BBMt the story the film blew alot of airplanes outta the sky - werent no little thing that was happin' there.
Aww, thanks WDW :) That avvie pic has always been a fave of mine but it just feels "right" for me atm.
Pia, i love what you say about BBM. I think Ennis and Jack's relationship, with everything they went through but never losing "the brilliant charge of their infrequent couplings", is a perfect example of "loving" and "being in love" at the same time.
Hey TL, I agree!
Love Jake in the long black coat. Ive got one like that, myself. My spy outfit. Jake IS oh oh sevem with A LICENSE TO LOVE
GNITE lil darlins.
LOL at your "spy outfit" Pia :D And yes, our Jakey would be a brilliant Bond - licensed to do just about anything as far as I'm concerned;) Nite xx
Great post WDW. Seeing Jake all bundled up makes me wanna snuggle up in that coat with him. What a pleasant thought on a snowy night. :)
Hi, WDW.
I know of three kinds of white beans:
--cannellini, or white kidney beans
--Great Northern beans
--Navy beans
They are very different one from another....
I would bet that Jake *does* add beans when he cooks soups. He probably meant that beans by themselves are not very interesting.
Great post WDW, as always.
I'm going to the Post Office after the work this evening to send you my 'gift'...get yourself ready. :)
Paulh, you're very prepared about Italian legumes, I can tell!;)
But you're right, we (Italians) love them, and I am, personally, a huge beans fan...have you ever tasted 'pasta e fagioli'? With a strong Italian red? You'd love it Jake! ;)
And Pia, I love what you say about love and desire and sex in BBM.
It's oh so very true...J&E both loved each other and continued being 'in love' with each other all life long...
Morning everyone - brrr, need to warm up. A London pea souper out there this morning.
Thanks so much for the comments - love what you're saying about BBM and love, Pia. I'll be back later. And hi TL, Bird Girl, Paul :D
Thank you Xenia xxx
As someone who feels ill even watching someone climb on a chair to change a light bulb I completely sympathise with any vertigo that Jake suffers from - plus I hate baked beans as well and love Italian food, oh Jake, if only,we are so compatable, and I'm sure you're a Spurs fan ;-)
*Ignores TL's Gooner reference*
Jake looks glorious all bundled up like that, put a smile on my face, thank you :D
Those pictures of Jake in the coat are from when he flew into NYC from Morocco to promote Zodiac in early March. I think he is bundled up bcz he doesn't want to catch cold.
Does the film offer a new definition of masculinity?' Jake replies that Hollywood offeres stereotypes to define what's male, which doesn't make it easy for normal men. I find the sensitivity side of maleness most interesting. Men are courageous if they can talk about their feelings...
Well, I've always thought so! :)
Thanks for another great, insightful post of Jake's thoughts.
I also saw Casanova for the first time, and I was struck by the loss of Heath. I thought it would be Brokeback that would do me in, and it does, but I had never seen Casanova, and to see Heath in that role, so vital like that, was breathtaking. I loved Sienna Miller's role too. I definitely want this for my collection. I haven't watched the clip from BAFTA yet, but I will soon. :')
Why do I do it to myself??! I'd already watched the Bafta tribute and got upset and I have to go and watch the clip again. Set to Ludovico Einaudi's wistful piano those final frames of Heath were even more heart-rending,pictures of him so you young and vibrant, his heart-breaking turmoil as Ennis at his last meeting with Jack and then that sombre black and white shot as "himself" - equally troubled as it turns out
:-(
Despite the melancholy start, however,it's a wonderful post WDW. As I only remember the tiniest smattering of German,I am really grateful for the translation of that lovely article. Loved the further little insights into Jake's approach to making "Brokeback" etc and as someone who is often disturbed and in need of comfort,I have to say "Any time you're free, Jake...." perhaps we can comfort and be comforted ? ;-)
I too am glad Jake thought of his safety first and dodged the leap from the cliff to save himself for "Jarhead". I sympathise with the vertigo thing too - I get dizzy if I wear my stilettos too high!
Love the pics of bundled-up Rendition Jake and the lovely Chris, one of my favourite combos! I think we probably love to see Jake all wrapped up because it's fun to imagine how delish it would be to unwrap him! Hurray! I'm actually ending on an "up" note!
Hi everybody :)
Hey Agent K - everyone knows Jake is actually a cricket fan ;) He does look good in that coat, definitiely!
Hi Anon - yep, the pictures were taken on 2 March last year.
I've been looking out for Casanova everywhere, Bertie. I really want to see it. I love Knight's Tale and so I think this one will be special too. Not so sure about Sienna Miller but I'm sure she can grown on me - saw her in Toronto wearing a very odd hat.
Hey stilettoed Nadine :) I lived in Germany for a while - loved it - so I picked up a bit. Unwrapping Jake is an image I will savour for the rest of the day - thanks!
see you all later :)
I am sorry to ask you all to bring out your tissues again, but I just read this article (through recom on DC thread) on UK's Financial Times today - Heartbreak Mountain
It's a tribute to Heath as well as a tribute to BBM's impact... what it says about Ennis and Heath's intrepertation of Ennis... just heartbreaking.
Thank you winterbird for this important link. Regarding Jake I noted theese words:
(in any other film Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance would have captured every honour)
Exactly!
But where is he now?
Herman
Winterbird, thanks so much for that. It really is adding to the timelessness of BBM.
Hi Herman. I expect Jake's putting his feet up at home right now as he probably only got back from filming yesterday. I could do with doing that myself right now :)
Good morning, y'all. And brrrrrrk ten degrees and icy underfoot.
Winterbird, there you are! thank you for ths heartbreak mountain essay. I have thot of Ennis as a Lear figure, and now, Heath as a Cordelia figure - and fool, also.
Heartbreak Mountain, indeed.
Im watching Julie Delpy films. Two Days in Paris, thot Jake would be lovely in such a film.
Roy Scheider's recent death at 75 -and review of his career - a rich career and a sweet and honorable life - I wish he same for Jake.
Morning Pia - hope you're OK today xx
Winterbird, thank you SO much for the heads-up on that wonderful Harry Eyres article,so perceptively and sensitively written. Eyres is a true Brokie at heart, who like us values all the subtle nuances of every performance in BBM,none more powerful than those of Jake and Heath.
I especially liked the line, describing Ennis, "What makes him both irresistible and devastating is the depth of baffled tenderness in him" SO beautifully evocative of Ennis, and yet,I would suggest, not too wide of the mark with Heath too.
I love also his recognition of the fact that in any other film Jake would have swept the board in terms of awards.
However, they may both have been robbed of their Oscars, the film too,but who needs awards when "Brokeback Mountain" will always stand as a monument to the power of love and a definitive testament to the heart-breaking,unforgettable alchemy that was Jack and Ennis and Gyllenhaal and Ledger. It can never be recaptured again but it will never be surpassed.
Hi, Xenia.
I've cooked four different recipes for pasta fagioli (which we Americans call pasta fazool ;-) ). It's hard to go wrong with that dish. Yum!
If you ever go to a formal Italian dinner, chances are there will be five courses: antipasto, first course (usually a pasta dish, but can be a starchy soup), main course, salad, or dessert. Pasta and beans go together fairly often. Pasta fazool is one way. Minestrone is another. Even pasta con sarde (a classic Sicilian dish with sardines) can have peas in it.
So, how can you be familiar with Italian food without ever having had dishes with beans in them. I spent 10 days in Italy this past July, and the meal I remember most vividly started with a traditional Umbrian soup that was heavy with lentils and beans and barley.
Afternoon,
Lovely post WDW as usual. TY:)
Snow is dusting parts of the city and it's bitter cold.
I've run out of steam and am glad to be here among friends.
All this talk of Italian food is making me hungry - didn't I read somewhere that Jake said his specialty was Milanese? I would dearly love to try his risotto. ;)
Hi everyone - with all this talk of Italian food going on, Paul, I had to tuck into some ravioli. Oh yes, Bertie, I remember the Milanese statement - and another time Jake said he cooked a great steak.
Wrap up in that snow, Sass.
Thanks for that beautiful brokie comment, Nadine :)
I wish we had more snow here. Most of ours turned out to be ice. It's even hard to walk out and get the mail. I am sure I will fall. I always do. Hopefully the neighbors won't be watching. :)
When my boyfriend informed me that it wasn't Jake jumping off of the cliff in BBM, I think he thought I would be disappointed. My response was, "Good, I wouldn't want anything to happen to him". It was pretty funny bursting his bubble.
I don't know about Milanese, but I do make a killer Pork Schnitzel... I guess they are quite similar, so maybe Jake and I can swap tips :)
Be careful slipping and sliding Bird Girl. And yes, I don't want Jake to do anything risky either even if it means not seing him jump off a cliff naked!
Hey Winterbird, I think we should all invite Jake round to dinner and each cook a different course - I can do the icecream ;)
I'll do coquilles St.JACQUES - east hampton bay scallops - right outta the sea, with butter, lemon, shallots, and a dusting of french bread crumbs, in their own wee shells, whisked under the broiler, just for Jake, himself fresh outta the sea - wet and salty - sand still in his hair -
Oh blimey Pia - that sounds delicious - all of it ;)
Blimey indeed! Jake on the half shell!
